    Author: Sweetpea Slight

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-31-17
    Publisher: Orion
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
At 18, after moving to London with dreams of becoming an actress, an impressionable girl who paints freckles on her face begins work experience in a West End theatre company. In between mail-outs and making cups of coffee, she meets the formidable producer Thelma Holt. Within a fortnight Thelma has stolen her, cancelled her audition for RADA, sent her to evening classes to learn to type, organised a miniscule salary and renamed her.
From that moment she becomes Sweetpea. Her days are spent in an eccentric office where Alan Rickman or Vanessa Redgrave might pop in at any moment. Evenings are filled with the adrenaline of an opening-night performance or the chatter of a smart restaurant where casting for the next production is discussed.
Existing somewhere between glamour and penury, Sweetpea finds herself surrounded by dynamic personalities and struggling to trust her own creative instincts. Over the years her apprenticeship takes in unusual demands, misbehaving actors, divinely inspired directors and a hot-air balloon ride with British theatre's finest.
Get Me the Urgent Biscuits is a keenly observed memoir about the vanishing world of London's West End in the 1980s and 1990s, in which a young woman is swept into the orbit of a theatrical impresario. Shrewd, poignant and irresistibly funny, above all it is a coming-of-age story about the search for independence and an ode to the beguiling nature of theatre.
    Read by Sweetpea Slight.
    Critic Reviews:
"A sparkling memoir full of charm and wit." (Nina Stibbe)
"Anyone who loves the theatre will love this book."

    Fun and interesting
A fun and interesting look at the world of a stage, television, and movie actress - and human being. A great read for any Doctor Who fan, or anyone who acts (or knows people who do.)
    Delightful Wit and Wisdom
Daphne Ashbrook tells her story with delightful wit and wisdom. She gives us an insider's view of the trials and tribulations, mishaps and life lessons gleaned from her lifelong acting career and passion. I could never have imagined what actors go through to live their dreams, until reading this book. With lots of experience and very notable credits, Daphne's humble take, and her insight into the business make for fascinating reading, both for novices to the entertainment industry, and I imagine, to seasoned entertainers who will surely relate with glee to Daphne's experiences!

A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
Today, the name Clint Eastwood conjures up many different and unforgettable images. While many will always associate him as the quintessential Western hero in classics like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, new generations know him as a critically acclaimed director and even an outspoken conservative firebrand.
Even if he is no longer the most prominent star in Hollywood, he is assuredly the most decorated octogenarian in the industry. In addition to his acting, two of his pictures, Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004), garnered Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture. Eastwood's acting and directing abilities have long appealed to both high classes and mass audiences, although it is true that his early works were skewed more toward the popular while the later ones reflect the opposite dynamic.
Debuting in the 1950s, Eastwood's career has now spanned over 50 years, and he has been involved in over 75 films, not to mention his appearances in television and other media. The sheer volume of films is especially impressive considering that he has also directed a significant number of them.

    All About Clint Eastwood
The biography of Clint Eastwood was quick read. Lots of untold secrets that was withheld from the media.
He could easly be an inspiration to those who think of dropping out of school, by sharing his struggles and how a highschool diploma could have helped him along his journey. I was disappointed in his persoal relationship concerning his wife how he treated other women in his life, but he has other redeeming qualities. I think. If you're really a fan of Cint I think you'd enjoy reading about his struggles, successes and failures. It's an honest look back. He's not perfect, but he never said he was.
    Mysterious as the Man Himself
Now I can understand how he survived Hollywood. He remained true to himself while chasing women. At least he was (I hope) good to his children and finally, love conquers him and calms him down. I have always liked Mr. Eastwood. He seemed so oddly out of place in Hollywood but considering his background, I kinda can tell why he is the way he is.
    3 Stars
I rated this book 3 Stars because the author kept hopping back and forth. I bought the book because I love and admire Clint Eastwood work. In my opinion he is one of the best actors and directors of all time. I also agree with his political views. As for as those who wish to mock him because he is old, should know they will also get old,if they live long enough.
Book is somewhat well written but stupid Political comments concerning Clint's politics completely turned me off
Book is somewhat well written but stupid Political comments concerning Clint's politics completely turned me off. Clint Eastwood is better than this book and it's author.
    Short story
A short story about a legend. This book tells you briefly about his life and how he started out.
Its o.k. if you want to know about him quickly.

Title: Legends of Music: The Life and Legacy of Jimi Hendrix

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-05-17
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
It is rare in the world of music for a general consensus to form over who was the best at anything. Many would call The Beatles the greatest rock band, but it's easy to find strongly opinionated dissenters. However, when it came to playing a guitar and laying the soundtrack for the psychedelic era, just about everyone agrees there was Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970) and then there was everyone else. Anyone arguing otherwise either never heard his music or saw him perform.
In fact, Jimi Hendrix is one of the few musicians known primarily for his sound and what he could do with a guitar than for his discography. A part of that is due to his untimely death and entry into the 27 Club, but it is also due to the fact that he was so revolutionary with the use of an electric guitar and so skilled at playing it that the effects have largely not been duplicated since. It was heavy, loud, and completely raw, and yet he was a pioneer in genres as varied as blues and heavy metal. As Pete Townshend famously put it, "With Jimi, I didn't have any envy. I never had any sense that I could ever come close."
Ironically, Jimi would later insist that the music that came to him sounded so much better in his head than he was capable of playing that sometimes he didn't even bother grabbing his guitar to try to sound it out. While rock fans can only imagine what it must have sounded like if Jimi didn't feel qualified to play it, they're more than happy with what he did play. When The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, their award noted that Hendrix "expanded the range and vocabulary of the electric guitar into areas no musician had ever ventured before."

    Nothing New
I have read other books about Jimi, and seem to read the same things over & over. But, I think it was the writing of the book, that made this one so different in its reading. I would recommend this book.
    History of Hendrix
Interesting and original account of the life of one of the world's best guitarists - it's an easy enjoyable read .
A good introduction to Jimi Hendrix and his life.
The pictures are b&w and on my kindle not able to be enlarged. The narrative, while honest, was a bit too concise.

In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
Nathaniel Hawthorne needs no formal introduction for any American who took a literature course in high school. It's impossible to avoid reading one of Hawthorne's classics, particularly The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables. Hawthorne could trace his family roots back to the Puritans of the 17th-century colonies, and he was clearly qualified to produce some of America's greatest historical fiction. In fact, people have long believed he changed the spelling of his last name to avoid association with an ancestor who had been involved in the Salem Witch trials, and his inclinations were on display with the way he portrayed Puritan Massachusetts in The Scarlet Letter.
Given the fact that his home was Salem and he was a transcendentalist, it's no surprise that much of Hawthorne's writing centers on New England, and his works were imbued with moral allegories that often featured the Puritans.

James Joyce, to understand the man.
One of e most controversial writers of modern times. Explores the man behind the the books. I read Joyce in college and would have gotten more of The Dubliners and Ulysses if I recognized his writing method better. Nice touchstone for further research.
    Sometimes brevity works perfectly!
Succinctly covers Hawthorne's life and literary accomplishments. Can easily be read in one sitting and is much more enjoyable than a set of cliff notes.
    Yikes!
Wordy. Excessively long sentences and paragraphs. Confusing presentation of ideas. Little known facts not worth knowing. Should I go on?
I approached this reading exercise hpong to learn something about the author of "The Scarlet Letter". I came away with a jumble of tales told by the author(s).
Don't get me wrong - it's worth reading. Just be forwarned.
    Exceptional
This Hawthorne biography was exceptionally well written--easily the best comprehensive look at the author's life that I've read yet! Truly outstanding!

    Riepilogo Editore:

    Title: Bleaker House
Subtitle: Chasing My Novel to the End of the World
    Author: Nell Stevens
    Narrator: Nell Stevens
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-01-17
    Publisher: Pan Macmillan Publishers Ltd
Ratings: 1 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
When Nell Stevens was given the opportunity to spend three months in a location of her choice in order to write her novel, she was determined to rid herself of all distractions. So Nell decided to travel to Bleaker Island (official population: two) in the Falklands, where she would write 2,500 words a day.
But Bleaker House is not that novel. Instead this is a book about a young woman realising that the way to writing fiction doesn't necessarily lie in total solitude and a clear plan. Nor does it lie in a daily ration of 1,085 calories, no means of contacting the outside world and a slow descent towards something that feels worryingly like madness....
Hilariously funny, painfully honest and beautifully observed, Bleaker House is part memoir, part travelogue, part story collection. It is an exploration of the narrow spaces between real life and fiction and, in the end, a book about failing to write a novel but finally becoming a writer.
    Critic Reviews:
"My favourite debut of 2017...as funny as it is poignant." (Lena Dunham)
    Members Reviews:
    In a class by itself
This book breaks lots of rules but showcases the author's impressive skills. I'd like to read more from her, i.e, any of the stories within this story carried through to the end. In a class by itself. Kudos, Nell.
    Worth reading.
I found it interesting to see how she dealt with the weather and the isolation on the island. I couldn't help but wonder what food I would have taken with me.
    Great read!
Loved this - a real insight into how hard it is to write a book! Engaging and kept you wanting to know what happened next.
A PUSHMEPULLYOU KIND OF A BOOK
This is Stevensâs first book but she was a finalist for the 2011 Elle magazine writing talent contest and runner-up in two writing contests (one memoir, the other short fiction) in 2014-15. Combine that with a bachelorâs degree in English and creative writing (Warwick), study at Harvard (Arabic and Comparative Literature) and an MFA in fiction at Boston University, where she received a graduate fiction award, and you have a formidable combination. Oh, did I mention she just completed her Ph.D. in Victorian literature at Kingâs College London?
This book is an odd but appealing join: itâs part memoir, part travel book and part fiction, and it is inspired by Dickensâs very odd but masterly novel, Bleak House. Stevensâ book narrates her trip to the Falkland Islands, located off the southernmost tip of South America, and in particular her six-week stay on Bleaker Island (serendipitous name!), a desolate pile of rocks and dirt eight miles square, inhabited during her stay in the winter (winters arenât nice down there), aside from Nell, by only the occasional sea lion or seal, about a thousand sheep and several cows, a colony of gentoo penguins and countless other birds, including one large aggressive raptor called the caracara (itâs characterized on the website allaboutbirds as âa tropical falcon version of a vultureâ). There are no trees. The wind blows. A lot. And if lack of sunlight affects your moods, prepare for mood swings.
She went there on a grant, her hope that the enforced solitude and straitened regimen would force her to be the novelist she aspired to be.
