A Christmas Carol has been a favorite story of mine for many, many years. I also like The Night before Christmas. My Christmas Season can now begin! I will be listening to this over and over!!!!!

The short narration in between the two stories was enlightening with information that I didn't previously know. That added just a little more excitement for me.

The narration was well done.The characters were well portrayed by Derek Perkins and Alison Larkin

This is an enjoyable listen and it was free from Audible.

Oh yes! It was delightful - such a treat - to hear my two favorite Christmas stories in the same recording! And read so beautifully with very interesting commentary in between.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Christmas Carol and The Night Before Christmas?

The moment when Scrooge wakes up and realizes it is not too late!

What does Derek Perkins and Alison Larkin bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

These are two A list narrators - the very best - at the top of their game. Both Mr Perkins and Mis Larkin have a gift for bringing out the author's voice through their own. They do it again here - with two of the greatest texts ever written. I was so happy to hear Derek Perkins reading this - he is SO GOOD. I loved Alison Larkin's narrations of Jane Austen and Lewis Carroll 's novels, which was how I found this. The combination of these two voices makes for a really top notch recording.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was so interesting listening to the short commentary by Alison Larkin in between the tales, linking the two stories in a very interesting way. I won't spoil it - but it's really fascinating!

Loved the voice of Scrooge, a great version

Would you consider the audio edition of A Christmas Carol and The Night Before Christmas to be better than the print version?

Um - hard to answer. Dickens himself read regularly from his work, and it works nicely when listened to.

Fireworks that glitter than go out

Don't waste your time with Mailer's literary pyrotechnics.

Norman Mailer most foul! Should be taught at literature school in Gibberish 101

Calling this book "classic", "war", or "journalism" is totally incorrect. When it came out, the rumor was that Mailer wrote it one weekend while drunk. If you read it, you'll probably see where the rumor came from. It's not about the war, it's about a kid & his friend who are preparing to be inducted and go on a hunting trip to Alaska, and actually, as I remember, the only place Vietnam is mentioned is on the last page, when the narrator says "Vietnam? Hot damn!" You really just read the first paragraph of the book to get an indication of what gibberish it is "Hip hole and Hupmobile, Braunschweiger. You didn't invite Geiger and his counter for nothing. Let go of my dong, Shakespeare" (I realized that I have had that opening line memorized for 50 years, since it first came out). "The Red Badge Of Courage", it ain't

North to Alaska

Why Are We in Vietnam? reads like Ernest Hemingwayâs Green Hills of Africa and William Faulknerâs âThe Bearâ as channelled through Doonesbury. Norman Mailerâs 1967 novel purports to answer the title question through the story of a big game hunt in the wilds of Alaska, which seems to imply that Americans (or at least Texansâthe president at the time was a Texan, you knowâ) are in Vietnam because they like killing and harbor a latent craving for buggery.

I evaluate novels on whether they entertain me, so Mailerâs goofy political theory and pretentious title make little difference to my review. What does make a difference, however, is that is that while Mailer sets up a good story dynamic, he sabotages it with juvenile posturing.

At its core, the book is about the growing conflict between teenaged D.J. and his father Rusty, a senior corporate executive undergoing a midlife crisis who plans the hunting trip in order to bag a grizzly bear and thereby validate his manhood. Joining the two on the trip are D.J.âs best friend Tex, a couple of Rustyâs flunkies and a pair of local guides. The story is told in alternating chapters narrated by D.J. in a bratty foul-mouthed voice and a third person narrator in a bratty foul-mouthed voice.

The best parts of Why Are We in Vietnam? are those describing the actual hunting activities and the behavior of the wildlife, which do evoke Hemingway and Faulkner, and thatâs a good thing. However, Mailerâs descriptions of the humansâ activities are undermined by the caricatured way they are presented and by narrative voices that sound like Beavis and Butthead on an off day.

Tarzan to the rescue! :) good ending, and you never know which way is gonna go throughout! love the narrator, Jeff Harding does a wonderful job! I wish he narrated the rest of the series! but to my dismay he does not.

A rare treat for Melville fans

The novel is incredible and this audiobook provides an unabridged edition - this is important because many who are familiar with Pierre these days are familiar with the abridged edition edited by Herschel Parker and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. I personally appreciate this full unabridged edition and find it indispensable to an understanding of Melville and his work.

It is easy to call the novel itself "flawed," as indeed it has been so called, but it's quality is of the sort that rather than having virtues and flaws it rather seems like a titanic mountain with crags and gorges, roughly but beautifully complex in its textures. If you enjoy Melville in general, the narrative voice in this novel is frankly lovable. Listening to it in audiobook form, I felt as if wearing this lovely narrative voice like a cloak. I am loath to cast it off!

Robin Field's reading is generally excellent and his tone, especially as narrator, is quite fine for this writing. However, I did occasionally wince at his reading of female voices - sometimes a little too much of the "damsel in distress" tone that male readers are sometimes wont to fall into. But it is a minor quibble (and some of that tone is in the writing as well, though not so much as it sounds in the recording), especially considering that this is really the only recording of Pierre that I am aware of that is a professional production, and unabridged to boot. Overall, highly recommended!

Beautifully written

Beautifully written but don't expect much more.

There is no beginning middle and end. It flows through one mans life without much excitement but an unexciting life nevertheless is beautifully described.

Probably one of the finest books I have listened to - why isn't this book better known?!

If you enjoy Donna Tartt I think you will enjoy this. I am left feeling bereft after finishing this book, so much so that I am about to start again!

A Truley Great Novel.

Utterly fantastic, moving and expertly composed. Everyone should read this book. The person who read this version was also flawless in his delivery.

This isn't the sort of book I would normally go for. It took me a while to get into it, but once I did I was hooked. I think comparisons to John Steinbeck are pushing it a bit, but Stoner is a compelling classic American novel with a character I came to really care about.

Very much enjoyed listening to this. To say not much happens would be true. But it is a compelling story beautifully told and very well read.

Would you try another book from the authors and/or Cathy Dobson?

No, while all of the authors are enticing, Dobson's performance, however, is not.

What did you like best about this story?

Silent pauses without her dramatics. Gave my ears a rest.

Cheap and worthless book.

This book looks like it was printed from a home printer and the illustrations are a joke. Do not buy this book, such a let down because the cover looks very nice. Just go online and print it yourself.

Great Graphic Novel

This story was a English assignment for my 8th grade son. When I saw the story in a graphic novel, it was a must have. Very nice book and great pictures. Very satisfied with this book.

Macabre. Well-executed.

The beating heart was really CREEPY!

Realistic

First, this isy favorite short story. Since receiving this, my kids (8-10) have asked me to read it to them several times. My only suggestion would be to make the beating of the heart more audible. You can get it but not really hear it. They hold it and pass it around, but a little sound would be nice, since it is the sound of the heart that is central to the story.

Five Stars

I am a fan of Edgar Allan Poe. I wish I had his talent.
