    Title: Four Arthurian Romances
    Author: Chrétien de Troyes
    Narrator: Nicholas Boulton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-11-17
    Publisher: Ukemi Audiobooks
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
The Arthurian Romances by Chrétien de Troyes form the wellspring of the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Stories of knightly valour in the Welsh Marches had existed before the 12th century, but it was the magnificent poetry and imagination of Chrétien, the 12th century French poet and trouvère, which brought alive the great characters of Arthur, his wife Guinevere, Lancelot and others. In fact, it was here, in these romances, that the tale of Lancelot of the Lake and his fated love for Guinevere first made its appearance in European literature. And far from being trapped in formal medieval stanzas, their passion has come down to us in words that still resonate: 'From the moment he caught sight of her, he did not turn or take his eyes and face from her.'
From these four romances emerge a chivalric Arthurian vision as vivid and human as the more familiar telling by Sir Thomas Malory three centuries later. The three other stories are equally rich and compelling, painting images of knightly ethics, courageous deeds and above all love, honour and service. Chrétien's telling is the outstanding Arthurian literary source, bringing together as it does the British plot, the characters and the adventures with a French courtly sensitivity. Though less known than Lancelot and Guinevere, the story of the trials leading to the love between Eric and Enide is just as memorable; in Cligès, the young hero travels between Greece and Arthur's court in order to win his spurs and his love; and in Yvain, the knight is helped by a faithful lion to achieve his aim.
These Four Arthurian Romances are read with full commitment by Nicholas Boulton using the translation by W. W. Comfort.

Ukemi Audio: Doing the Lords Work
Long before the Internet made almost everything available to just about everyone, a friend of mine would say of certain publishing houses that they were doing the Lords work.
He meant that, despite the cost of production and the inevitable loss in the marketplace, these houses persevered in turning out slim volumes of the lesser-known Elizabethan sonnet cycles and classic works of history eclipsed by more up-to-date scholarship. If he were still with us, hed probably say Ukemi was doing the Lords work for audiobooks.
This edition of Chretien de Troyes is the third Ukemi release in my library, joining Boetheus Consolation of Philosophy and the amazing, anonymous Mabinogion. Like the first two titles, this one is superbly, vigorously, read. Like the first two, the translation is of a rather reverend vintage, well within the Public Domain.
At first that made me wary; though no chronological snob (C. S. Lewis term for one dismissive of past ideas and ideals) I appreciate what modern scholarship can bring to the translation of ancient texts. But beyond a certain stiltedness in Boetheus, my fears have proved groundless. In the case of Chretien, Im grateful for this prose version. While I thoroughly enjoyed reading the deftly rhymed verse translations by Ruth Cline and Dorothy Gilbert, these fabulous stories, told in four-beat couplets crowded with details, would probably be harder to follow through ear buds.
If you clicked on this book, chances are you already know these stories, so I wont dwell on their origins and influence.

    Title: The Prince
    Subtitle: Strategy of Niccolo Machiavelli
    Author: Niccolo Machiavelli
    Narrator: Roberto Scarlato
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-08-17
    Publisher: Dreamtown Publishing
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
The Prince is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. From correspondence, a version appears to have been distributed in 1513, using a Latin title, De Principatibus (About Principalities). However, the printed version was not published until 1532, five years after Machiavelli's death. This was done with the permission of the Medici Pope Clement VII, but long before then, in fact since the first appearance of The Prince in manuscript, controversy had swirled about his writings".
Although it was written as if it were a traditional work in the mirrors for princes style, it is generally agreed that it was especially innovative. This is only partly because it was written in the vernacular Italian rather than Latin, a practice which had become increasingly popular since the publication of Dante's Divine Comedy and other works of Renaissance literature.
The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning politics and ethics.
Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of Machiavelli's works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. It even contributed to the modern negative connotations of the words "politics" and "politician" in western countries. In terms of subject matter, it overlaps with the much longer Discourses on Livy, which was written a few years later. In its use of near-contemporary Italians as examples of people who perpetrated criminal deeds for politics, another lesser-known work by Machiavelli which The Prince has been compared to is The Life of Castruccio Castracani.

    A Classic Brought to Life
What made the experience of listening to The Prince the most enjoyable?
I've read this on paper format, but it's been years. The narrator really brought this amazing piece of work to life and I feel I enjoyed it more than before.
What did you like best about this story?
This book is not only interesting, but very historically significant - so it's interesting from two angles.
    Any additional comments?
I believe there are a number of narrations on this book out there - but this is really an excellent one and the best choice in my opinion.
    Great!
Good strategies to face the worlds trials & tribulations with a tactful vision that will allow you to prevail.
    Great!
Fantastic narration for this literary classic! Personally, I found this much easier to listen to in audio than to read. Very well done.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. The fact that I was gifted this book had no influence over my opinion of it

    Publisher's Summary:
Gogol's great Russian classic is the Pickwick Papers of Russian literature. It takes a sharp but humorous look at life in all its strata but especially the devious complexities in Russia, with its landowners and serfs. We are introduced to Chichikov, a businessman who, in order to trick the tax authorities, buys up dead 'souls', or serfs, whose names still appear on the government census. Despite being a dealer in phantom crimes and paper ghosts, he is the most beguiling of Gogol's characters. Gogol's obsession with attempting to display 'the untold riches of the Russian soul' eventually led him to madness, religious mania, and death. Dismissed by him as merely 'a pale introduction to the great epic poem which is taking shape in my mind', Dead Souls is the culmination of Gogol's genius. Translator: Constance Garnett.

    Fantastic!!!
Absolutely fantastic version of this book! The narrator is very good! I was very pleased with his performance. I was lost in the mystery and misery of this novel, and would listen to it again and again!
    NARRATOR IS GREAT
I started off this book with a different narrator and decided to spend a little more on this audiobook and in my opinion it made for a better experience. I had previously read this classic novel but enjoyed it a bit more as an audiobook. I feel that if you have not yet read this book itll be enjoyable whether you read it or listen to it. Especially if you enjoyed the musical. You tend to understand the story just a bit more.

    Dreadful Reading
Alan Munro's reading is so awkward that I can't get through this book. He has a senseless cadence and his phrasing is so off that the words loose their meaning as you strain to listen. I'm enjoying the story enough that I am going in search of a better version.
    A reject
Completely inaudible. Too low sound level. Bad diction. Speech impediment. No understanding the meaning of phrases - wrong logical intonation
    Putting a classic to shame
I seriously didn't know it was possible to be such a bad voice actor. This guy... this guy, can't even flow a sentence without some horribly stilted pause, in an incredibly unnecessary fashion. This guy sounds like he thinks he's the best voice actor every. But I simply couldn't hand it. I gave up, I couldn't do it. I really tried to get used to his reading 'style' but it was impossible. I couldn't concentrate on the story cos I was distracted by his dumbass reading.
But Please read this book in your lifetime, it is amazing. Just not from this Dolop of a man...

    Publisher's Summary:
Madame Bovary is a lurid tale of unremorseful adultery and violent emotions set against the background of the stupefying, boring provincial town of Yonville in Normandy. The book is a biting criticism of entitlement and living beyond one's means.
Emma Bovary is beautiful and cultured but she yearns for excitement. Reading too many romantic novels has given her a taste for a lifestyle she can't afford, and she racks up eye-watering debts by secretly buying expensive trinkets from the unscrupulous merchant Lheureux. Unfulfilled by her dull-as-dishwater husband Charles and the drudgery of motherhood, she embarks on a series of torrid affairs with more exciting lovers.
How long can she hide her cheating and debts from her husband before her behavior catches up with her? Will she ever find something or someone that satisfies her craving for more?

Spectacular Narration of a Great Classic
Madame Bovary is both engaging and insightful while acting as a reminder that the grass isnt always greener on the other side. The story of Emma, a self-centered romantic who longs for the glamorous life, is one that many women can relate to in todays day and age. Once married, she still longs for adventure, glamour, and romance that have since died down, which ultimately leads her to a path of disaster.
The narrator was truly a pleasure to listen to. Kate Petrie was a wonderful choice for this books narration. She has a captivating voice thats a delight to listen to, drawing you into Madam Bovarys story right from the start, making it even more entertaining and thought provoking.
Madame Bovary is a good reminder to be content with what we have in life because things can always get worse. An excellent classic by Gustave Flaubert.
