    A Near-Perfect French Language Audiobook
What made the experience of listening to Notre-Dame de Paris the most enjoyable?
I was glad to finally find a French Language unabridged audio recording. I have a long history with the book. I first read the slightly abridged Lowell Bair translation over a period of several months as a pre-teen. I've since lost count of how many times I've read "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Notre Dame de Paris" in English and French.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I can't say he's really my favorite character, but over the years Claude Frollo has come to interest me even more than Quasimodo. He's an intelligent, would-be compassionate man who has been deranged by his own beliefs.
What about Mathurin Voltzs performance did you like?
Mathurin Voltz gives an enjoyable reading of the novel, even if like me your understanding of spoken French is weak.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I think it's a book you take your time with and think about along the way even if you already know the story.
    Any additional comments?
Please note that unless a correction is made there seems to be a strange recording or editing mistake. Near the middle, several pages seem to be missing. It turns out they were somehow put in the wrong place. The chapters should be listened to in this order:

Durée: 1 hr and 41 mins
    Langue: Français
    Date de publication: 05-31-16
    Éditeur: Compagnie du Savoir
    Genres: Classics, European Literature

    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
The most exciting underwater adventure ever!
In 1866 a mysterious giant whale savagely attacks ships in international seas. A famous French marine biologist, Pierre Aronnax, joins the hunt to track down and incapacitate the creature. With him are his loyal servant, Conseil, and redoubtable Canadian harpooner Ned Land. They soon find that their enemy is no sea beast but a brilliantly designed submarine. They are captured and imprisoned by its master, the sinister Captain Nemo. The story is relentlessly thrilling while containing beautifully written observations of underwater life.
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea has been hugely influential on popular culture, having inspired several stage and film adaptations, including a Walt Disney film with Kirk Douglas. Captain Nemo also appears as a main character in the graphic novel and film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Bill Homewood's distinctive voice is perfect for the French classics: He has previously read The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Three Musketeers for Naxos AudioBooks and is "...a narrator so perfectly matched to his material that you can't help but smile" (The Times).

    A good one
A good reading of this complex masterpiece. It starts with a complete translation, which only a handful of Verne audiobooks do: the ones narrated by James Frain and Norman Dietz are among this handful. Most Americans are unaware of just how hacked up most translations of Verne are; this is one of the better ones. (If the book starts with the sentence "The year 1866 was signalised by..." put it back on the shelf: it's a notoriously bad and butchered translation.)
Bill Homewood has a formal style of narration, complete with trilled Rs, but it lends itself well to some of the lyrical descriptions of nature that appear here. I wouldn't mind hearing a few more Verne books narrated by him.
    Great book
the story is a bit slow, not Lord of the rings slow, but the list of fish seen gets a bit tiresome at points. otherwise, this book, a true classic, is amazing.
No giant squid?! Good book though
    Guuuuvvvv hyuu yuu hhcgh hhjv hhh h h j h h h h h h
    A Little Flat
This was well-written (well, it *is* a classic, after all) if a little description-heavy, and the reader's voice made for very pleasant listening. However, the reader's voice was so calm and mellow, it made the more exciting bits...not very. There was also very little of the more violent emotion shown in the reading - which might be fairly accurate as this is a first-person narrative and the more violent emotions come from other people. All-in-all, I enjoyed this but found it more soothing and interesting than exciting. I feel that Jules Verne was probably going for exciting so judge for yourself whether this is positive or negative.
    A whale of a tale!
This is the world's best story. l know that everyone says that about their favorite book, but I will never forget this tale.

    Language: English
    Release date: 12-04-15
    Publisher: A.R.N. Publications
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 37 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Notes from the Underground is an 1864 existentialist novella written by the Russian author, Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The speaker, an unknown yet common type of man, writes in first person about his views on Western philosophy, as well as his stark analysis of his own life. The work is written as the ramblings of this retired government employee who seems to have a very pessimistic yet honest opinion on his own life, as well as the world as seen through his eyes.
Although purely fictional, Dostoyevsky notes that he created this character because he knows that there are several real people who share this persona and view of society. Composed mostly of ramblings and dark humor, this short listen is divided into two parts.
In the first section, the speaker introduces himself as a spiteful man who may not actually be spiteful. He shares his views on several subjects including doctors, old age, and conflicting emotions. His main focus is his attack on the Western philosophies of Chernyshevsky's views. In the second section, the speaker explains and evaluates certain events in his life. Due to its unique structure and uncommon directness, Dostoyevsky's novella makes for an interesting listen that is still enjoyed today.

I loved the story and the narration. I reccomand listening to this audio book it's great
    interesting read
the narrator's attitude towards life and lack of action is very interesting. He is quite nihilistic and conscious of it. Really good read/listen
    ugh

Great rendition of a great classic.
The story is classic, beautifully woven together in an expansive narrative (conveniently long for many hours of enjoyment) full of adventure, tragedy, revenge but also comedy and hope.
The narrator has a very enjoyable voice, and through his expression gives additional life to the story far beyond reading. For example, I found that the narrator renders the full impact of the funnier scenes, causing outright laughter.
I chose this book to test out audiobooks. I was unsure of the format, but thought the poetic writing style of Dumas would lend itself to being read aloud. My expectations were far exceeded, and this book has rescued tedious hours folding laundry or and executing simple but time consuming tasks at work.
    clásicos a leer u escuchar
    Great story.
Beginning of the book was brilliant but the second part, Paris stay, is somehow a bit more slow or heavy to listen.
    Performance is always very good.
I'll buy Tome 2 right now.
    Enjoy this book :-)
    Suspenseful!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes - who knew that Dumas had written such a suspenseful and exciting novel? After having read The Three Musketeers I had no appreciation of his artistic flair, that of the thriller. Excited and can hardly wait for Part 2 to be available on Audible.

    Publisher's Summary:
Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina, was foremost among the great Russian novelists of the 19th century, and is widely considered one of the greatest writers of prose fiction in world history.
In his perceptive and moving depiction of Ivan Ilych, a worldly careerist facing his own mortality in the midst of a self-absorbed family and indifferent colleagues, Tolstoy provides one of literature's greatest and most memorable reflections on the meaning of the good life and on life as preparation for death.
This edition features the classic Oxford translation of Aylmer and Louise Maude, of whom Tolstoy himself said, "Better translators, both for knowledge of the two languages and for penetration into the very meaning of the matter translated, could not be invented."

    Great experience
I needed to read this for a college assignment. I ended up really enjoying it. It truly is a masterpiece and I feel the narrator presented it well without distracting from the work itself. Would recommend.
Welp, I Guess I'll Go Ponder Now
Being completely new to Tolstoy, I was blown away by this story, and was left feeling thoroughly understood by its writer-- and yet more misunderstanding of myself than ever before. I found it to be a fantastic supplement after recently finishing Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis; as I wrote when reviewing that title, I would recommend this book highly to my fellow followers of Christ, even more highly to those who do not follow Him, and most highly of all to those on the fence about the whole thing.
    Horrible Recording
Whoever made this audiobook has no idea what theyre doing. Better to leave the slight background hiss than make it go silent here and there in the middle of hisses due to inept postproduction. I cant stand listen to it.
So glad I had this assigned
What did you love best about The Death of Ivan Ilych?
Although this was assigned as part of course material this semester, I am so glad it was. Great story and still so relevant today
Scary how relevant this is today
What an eloquent tale of the way the world works. Absolute misery...until it is no more.

    Publisher's Summary:
"A piece of perfect storytelling." (Robert Louis Stevenson)
Trust. Betrayal. Revenge. The Count of Monte Cristo is the quintessential masterpiece of Alexandre Dumas. In Edmond Dantes we find an early materialization of the modern superhero. He is a dashing young sailor imprisoned unjustly for treason. While in prison he meets a holy man who imparts to him all his wisdom of languages, philosophy, science, and literature. The "abbe" also divulges the profound secret of a hidden treasure. Dantes realizes that with such immense wealth one could do a generous amount of good for one's friends. On the other hand, one could also wreak a hateful vengeance on one's enemies.
Now freed from prison, and armed with untold riches, a wealth of intelligence, and a countenance utterly unrecognizable, Dantes fulfills his vow to wreak complete and utter revenge on those who conspired against him.

The proof is in the narrator!
The Narrator is a key point when embarking on an audio book that is over 50 hours long. To that point B.J. Harrison is to be highly praised for his performance! I will be looking for more titles graced with his narration.
One of the best readers (esp for the classics)
If you could sum up The Count of Monte Cristo [Classic Tales Edition] in three words, what would they be?
The book is better than, more complex than, more unbelievable than, any of the filmed versions.
What did you like best about this story?
I particularly liked how much I learned about the time period and this area of the Mediterranean.
Have you listened to any of B.J. Harrisons other performances before? How does this one compare?
B.J. Harrison is one of the best readers I've heard. Able to do many voices compellingly, believably, and back-to-back. Even my kids were stunned when they realized it was all one reader.
best narrative performance i have ever heard.
of course the story is a classic, but the reading performance is the best ive ever heard. please dont miss it.
    Bravo!
What about B.J. Harrisons performance did you like?
I am so glad I listened to the samples and just didn't go with the book with the most ratings. Harrison's narration is far superior than any of the others. In some of the other recordings you can hear the narrator breathe, I hate that. Not with this one, it is perfect.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Very hard to put down. I fell asleep listening to this in bed more than once. Not because it was boring at all, but because I stayed up too late and should have been asleep hours ago.
    Count of Monte Cristo
Good story. Not my favorite but good. Prepare to invest time. I'm not sure I can recommend BJ Harrison's performance. While he is versatile in his voices I think he tries to hard at times and over performs. But it's just my opinion.
