    Great book terrible translation
Find a different translation. This one misses the point in many places and therefore doesn't get the intended message across. Still a great book though
The novel with the best character description I have read
An extraordinary describtion and analysis of plot characters.Starts out almost too detailed which proves very important to understand the atmosphere of the place, the relationship and background motives for the interaction of the main characters. Then suddenly action is setting in and the story moves so fast that events rush to one climax toping or aggravating the next. There is a lot of life's truth divulged making you pensive and insightful since the topic of exaggerated love and adoration of children being incapable or not wanting to be capable of recognizing the "wrong" exaggerated unhealthy disproportional devotedness with all its dangers , is still valid till today. A highly enjoyable novel with outstanding selection of vocabularies. And the topping is the last sentence of the story demonstrating that one can see the faults and mistakes in life's situation and circumstances ,knowing what to do better to avoid the perils and... yet ,turning a blind eye to cognition and keep continuing the unethical way.
they don't write them like this any more
If you want a memory trip back to freshman college literature class, try this. A devastating portrait of aristocratic Parisian society, Balzac obviously has lessons to teach - but it is not preachy or sentimental. With enough plotting to send every character from despair to ecstasy several times each day, Balzac keeps things interesting up until the end, where irony and tragedy galore await. It is old-school in style (philosophical regressions on man and morals, etc), but a page-turner (and not long, either).
    Is This Worth Reading? Yes!
Balzac's Literature, for me, is "a mixed bag". You have to be "patient" because there's alot of "description". I "read" this book as a book on tape which helped keep me from giving up on it which I thought about doing a couple of times during the reading of the book. But, I'm GLAD I DIDN'T GIVE UP on the story because some of the best is near the end. This "best near the end" makes the time and effort worthwhile for the reader. You'll be glad you read the entire book!
Let me say a few words about "economics". Balzac apparently was always in debt and never "made a bundle" during his life. So, he was always suffering under a burden of debt----like many of us here on Amazon with our VISA and Master Cards and house payments and car payments! So, many of us can "identify" with the plight of his characters as they try to stay solvent, out of debt, and out of debtors prison! Of course, we don't have "debtors prisons" these days but many people worry about how to pay the bills and many people live paycheck to paycheck.

30 years later - much better on a second reading.
When I read this last, I was 20. And I did not yet speak German - not really at all. What a delight to read it again 30 years later (for free, in electronic form, where any unremembered vocabulary can be translated, or looked up with a touch) This time through, I got to enjoy the inventiveness and sophistication with which Kafka tells this story - a towering first of its kind - and also enjoy the style, wit and language he employs to convey the horror, absurdity and humor this story is still famous for. Fun.

Good book, I liked it in English, so obviously I enjoy rereading it in German.
    Die Verwandlung
I haven't finished reading it, but I have read it a lifetime ago in college in English. Now, in its original language, slower reading by far, it is a more powerful and beautiful book than I remember it to be. A great deal gets "lost in translation," as it is said.

    A Life More Than Bees
Profound but hard to follow his intense, intellectual, and phiosophicall point of view at times. His use of the English language is impressive but he lost me a couple of times and it took a rereading of several passages to see his connection between the life of bees and the life of humanity. That being said, I still enjoyed the challenge and feel his prognosis that much more observing is needed vs.drawing conclusions too quickly. I couldn't help but think that quantum biology and all the other emerging quanta reinforce the author's views on "what is coming".
The Sex Life of Bees--and More...
It is a classic, of course. He makes it quite clear that he is not an entymologist or an apiarist, but his own observations over many years are priceless. Particularly interesting are his explanations of swarming when the queen bee flies to higher altitudes than most bees can reach and is pursued by the male bees, one fortunate male is able to impregnate the queen while in flight--only to have his abdomen ripped out and dying when the deed is done. The sperm from that one donor is stored in a special organ in the queen's abdomen, where it is doled out to fertilize each of the thousands of eggs she will lay daily. It's a gruesome death for the successful donor, but that one male bee gets to father generations and literally hundreds of thousands of new bees. The fun part of Maeterlinck's descriptions is the endlessly delicate terminology he uses to describe the copulation process to a rigidly Puritanical Victorian readership in 19th century Europe. He has to resort to much word verbiage to explain the fact that--humans not excluded--in so far as Nature is concerned, the only reason for copulation is to continue the species.
    Interesting book
An interesting book well written in the style of 1901 when it was published. The writer was very, very verbose and philosophical. I do wonder how people held conversations at that time. If people went on and on in the same way, though I have heard that political speeches lasted for hours as did sermons. Mr. Maeterlinck did love the bees and was obviously entranced by them. He offered very interesting information about what went on/goes on inside a bee hive if you can wade through and get to it. It is worth the read in spite of what I have said above.
    Five Stars
Love his essays on subjects in everyday life and his plays
    Interesting, but rambling
I was looking for a good overview of the honeybee. This book definitely has that, but the author often drifts off topic and seems to be equally, if not more, concerned about the study of mankind. It is almost as though the author is searching for God as well as for models of civilization. Always interesting to read books written from a different time/period, and that need to be taken into account when selecting this book.

Beautiful edition marred by poor binding
Bough this Calla edition of "A House of Pomegranates"... twice -- first time, upon opening the book the binding that holds the pages became unglued from the spine -- completely -- returned and tried another and the same thing -- very disappointed...but I figure that after two exact same defects, must be a production/batch issue.
5 stars for paper material, illustrations, etc -- as those are all top notch...the issue is the binding/construction which gets a 1 star --
I've checked other Calla editions and this issue seems limited to this title & also "A Midsummer Night's Dream" -- beware of this issue if ordering these two books.
The next best thing to the original first edition
This is an unabridged reprint of one of the most sought after books illustrated by Jessie M. King. The original edition was first published by Methuen and Coy, Ltd., London, 1914, which now is very difficult to find and would cost more than $500 if in good condition. The original tipped in color plates by King are faithfully reproduced in this edition. (This review is forA House of Pomegranates (Calla Editions), published in 2011)
    Please read Wilde.
The years have not dimmed Oscar Wilde's talent. I read several of these
poems aloud and they are flawless. It truly is amazing. And Ballad of Reading
Gaol, I hadn't read it in quite a while but it is still so powerful. As he said in
his trial, he wrote always for beauty and he delivered. He is probably an
    equal to Shakeseare. Please read.
    Excelent
I loved the end of The Infanta's Birthdays it portrays the personality of cold people. The part of Soul of fisherman when his soul claims him why he didnt give it his heart. I still keep Oscar Wilde as my favorite write and with this tales even more.
An amazing story of pain, humility and endurance. We reap what we sow, yet Grace gives room for forgiveness and new life.
