Hearing Christ work in the lives of all the characters.

    Midnight Clear
Midnight Clear brings characters to life who face a different Christmas from the joy-filled celebration that most of us enjoy . . . Mary and Mitch, for whom Christmas is the anniversary of the death of their husband and friend, respectively; Eva, an older woman estranged from her children and with no will to go on; Lefty, a lonely man without home and job, who turns to alcohol; and Kirk, a gas station owner , forced to work on Christmas Eve.
This novella, which takes place during the hours of Christmas Eve, packs a lot more meat than one would expect. You become attached to the characters, which is often difficult in such a short book, and you may even be challenged to examine your faith.
In one scene, Pastor Mark says to Mitch: "Show them (teenagers) a faith that's strong enough to make them want to do things they wouldn't normally do." I always hate it when challenged to get out of my comfort zone, yet that seems to be when God's working is most visible in my life.
Another takeaway from this book is the reminder that we will face hardships, but we never walk alone. Mary reflects: "Disaster prevention was never promised as a benefit of her faith. And perhaps that's what God was about - showing Himself faithful in a world thrown off course by humans with free will."
Nothing is tied up neatly with a bow at the end, but there is the realism of forgiveness, grace and hope - which is the gift of Christmas after all.

Another great book by Lauraine Snelling. I've read quite a few of her books and have thoroughly enjoyed each of them. Will probably read everyone of the books she has written before I'm Through, If they are available.Thank you Mrs. Snelling for the writing of them and Amazon for making them available.
    I love laurine snelling's books
I love laurine snelling's books. This is one more story involving the families of Blessing, ND. It is a continuation of her first book in the Red River of the North series and I hope she will write even more (especially about Manda and Baptiste). If you have read any of this series I am sure you will agree they become part of your extended family and you want to know what happens with each character.

I love the Daughter of Blessings Series by Lauraine Snelling and am always excited to ready about Blessing, ND I was a little surprised that this book was about Rebecca. I wouldn't of considered her a "daughter of Blessing", but it was good none the less. Lauraine Snelling has many books and series out about Blessing, North Dakota but you don't need to read them all to enjoy this series.
Rachel's story is engaging as she grows from young girl to a woman without her mother's love and guidance
Another plus for Lauraine Snelling in this one of the stories of the daughters from Dakotah Territory. Rachel's story is engaging as she grows from young girl to a woman without her mother's love and guidance. Ingerborg steps in yet again to take Rebecca's under her wing as hardship comes Rebecca's way from a ridiculous action by caused by her brothers.

    What a Blessing
"A Place Called Blessing" - What a blessing this book has become to me. It is the first book I have read in over two years that hasn't been a study reference, Bible Study or a work of theology or apologetics. Wonderful writing as at times I became so engrossed in the story almost as if I were watching the whole thing unfold before me. Dr. John Trent and Annette Smith did a wonderful job and the ending was just superb. Heart wrenching and heart warming as Josh overcomes his personal battles. Would definitely recommend the book. Curl up on the couch with your favorite blanket, coffee and a tissue and get ready for an unforgettable story with highs, lows and profound revelations. My teenagers will be reading this tomorrow as it will surely give encouragement to them as they too face their own personal battles. A definite read-over when I start feeling sorry for myself. Receive a blessing today and read "A Place Called Blessing". You wont' be disappointed.
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneezeÂ.com <[...]> book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

    Great story
    Tough lessons about life.
When I received this book, I wasn't quite sure what it was about. It turned out to be a story following the life of a boy named Josh. At a young age, Josh and his brothers lost their parents. After going into the foster system, Josh was separated from his two older brothers and left to be on his own. The book goes on to talk about Josh turning eighteen and learning to live in the "real world". He is even after finding work, Josh is on the verge of being homeless. Josh's life turns when he meets co-worker and his mother who take him in. They helped Josh by supporting him and giving him unconditional love. The new people in his life has given him a "blessing".

    Expected better
What about Emily Durantes performance did you like?
She did a very good job distinguishing voices - I was rarely confused about who was speaking when. She captured the drama of situations without over-doing it
    Any additional comments?
I was very disappointed in this book. The idea is interesting - do the thoughts and emotions of a transplant recipient become those of the donor? Unfortunately, this idea was not very well flushed out, and it seemed that the protagonist/recipient, and thereby the author, just bought this idea by doing some research on the Internet.
The plot never really moves along, though I was interested enough in why certain things happened that I kept on listening, but by the end I just didn't care anymore.
I can't say I will never read one of Allison Strobel's books again, though I am disappointed I started with this one.

Great series - always something to learn.
I love the entire series of Tales from Grace Chapel Inn. I also love the idea of the books being written by various authors. They maintain the characters very well, but each bring their own perspective - it's as if you are getting to know a particular character featured in a particular book just that much more in depth. I also love the tone of the books - Christian in context. As a plus, it seems I get to learn something about a particular subject matter in each book - the ins and outs of jury duty, watercolor painting, cooking.
These books are out of print by the original publisher.
These books are fun reads and since they were out of print I have been able to find all of them except for one in the series through Amazon Prime. I believe by the time I get to the one that I need I will have found it. These books are some new and most used but in very very good condition. If you like to read you will like these books.

Length: 6 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-30-10
    Publisher: Zondervan
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Religious & Inspirational
    Publisher's Summary:
From master storyteller Walter Wangerin, Jr., comes this familiar biblical saga told in a fresh, transfixing way. You'll feel you've never heard it before! Melding historical accuracy with imaginative detail, Wangerin uses the biblical books of Judges and Ruth to explore themes of love, faith, grief, and community, set against a backdrop of war and political instability.
The widow Naomi grieves the deaths of her two adult sons after the shocking murder of a beloved adopted daughter, while pondering her responsibilities toward her Moabite daughters-in-law. Ancient Israel is in chaos. When her daughter-in-law, Ruth, begs to return to Israel with Naomi, events are set in motion that will change the course of history.
But wait... this isn't the tame, flannel graph story you heard in Sunday School. In the tradition of Anita Diamant's The Red Tent and Elissa Elliott's Eve: A Novel of the First Woman, Wangerin imbues his tale with strong female characters and an earthy realism that gives the timeless Old Testament narrative so much power. You'll find echoes of contemporary issues throughout: deceit, heartbreak, loss, war, and, of course, the power of love. Naomi's combined strength and tenderness becomes the pivot upon which a nation turns; her decisions ultimately lead to the founding of the family lineage of Jesus Christ. Breathtaking descriptions, shocking violence, and inspirational courage make this spellbinding novel by a beloved award-winning author a story you won't soon forget. It's the perfect novel for your book group, and a satisfying listen for those who love thoughtful biblical fiction.
    Members Reviews:
Proves Truth is More Fascinating Than Fiction.
This novel is mainly a fictionalized expansion of the actual verses (italicized) of Judges 18-21 and all of Ruth. It goes from 11 years before Judges 18 at a fictionalized meeting between Naomi when she is 22 and when the woman mentioned in Judges 18 is 5 years old to all the way to Samuel 16 when Ruth's great grandson David is anointed to be the future 2nd king of Israel through whose line the Savior would be born. There are scripture quotations and histories interspersed in from the other books preceding Judges (from Genesis on wards) as well as poetic allusions to Psalms and Song of Solomon (Song of Songs). Using the plot device of Boaz wandering in a self inflicted exile pilgrimage of the lands surrounding the Israelites you get to know the origins of the other various Abrahamic connected people who neighbor the Israelites. Boaz also reflects on the Judaic traditions of his people as he visits the historical sites where events happened to precede such traditions. The whole book was a enlightening exposition on ancient Judaic traditions that they followed blindly to the letter of the law ignoring the spirit of the law which sometimes resulted in shocking tragic decisions and consequences. I read a heavily footnoted and extra study guide information paneled Bible printing of Judges 18 to 21 and Ruth before starting to read the novel because of the foreknowledge given in a prior review that the novel was based on those scriptures. This novel matched the verses, educational footnotes, and study guide panels of the Bible I read in storyline and Judaic traditions.

    Touching and beautiful
What a great book! I'd read it about four years ago and picked it up again. Now that my own son is a teenager, it seems even more powerful and real. A wonderful story of two boys trying to make peace with their god and with the challenging circumstances they've been given. As another reviewer said, the language has a enjoyable poetic flow to it, but at the same time it is easy to read. A little background knowledge of the biblical story is helpful, but it would still be a good read without it.
    Parallels
Dark Sons parallels the lives of two individuals that undergo similar circumstances ages apart. The struggle is real for each character. I loved the use of the biblical references.

The Abram's Daughters saga encompasses the lives of three generations of Ebersols, an Amish family of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Opening with The Covenant at the end of World War II and continuing into the '50s with The Betrayal, Leah and Sadie Ebersol have made very different choices with consequences that have left them many miles apart, both physically and emotionally. Having already suffered unthinkable betrayals, Leah has accepted her life as "Abram's daughter", fitting willingly and comfortably into the family and work, whether she is needed out in the barn or helping her mother, Ida, with housework and baby sister Lydiann. But an unexpected family announcement brings unimaginable joy - as well as incredible sorrow.
Leah is once again caught between the yearnings of her heart and responsibility for her family. Her younger sisters, twins Hannah and Mary Ruth, face their own difficult choices. Their paths also seem to be diverging, pushing the Ebersol family into further turmoil. Will they ever find true peace - within and without?

This was actually the second time I've read this book. I have read the whole series (Abram's Daughters). This one was my least favorite of the series though mainly because there are some really sad events taking place in the story. But I will admit, life can be that way. And Beverly always addresses these things from a strong Christian perspective. Still, a bit too melodramatic for me........wish I had remembered that before I re-read it.
I'm hooked and have to finish the stories, but losing some interest.
Recently finished this third of the Abram's daughters books. Of course, I will have to read the next one. This one was very good also and seemed to have a lot more drama than the last 2 before it. I'm just not sure how she can squeeze 2 more books out of it because it seems like the whole story line could've ended with this last book if only a couple of chapters would have been added. I did enjoy this last one but toward the end, they allowed a lot of time to pass without knowing what happened during these years. I do like how she keeps you interested in the characters but I don't like how in one paragraph you are all involved in one character and in the very next, you are talking about someone else without a clear indication from the author about who it is she's talking about. It's sort of like Ms. Lewis has ADD and is all over the place at times with the characters. That said, I will finish the series but am losing interest somewhat and can't figure where else this can go but I guess I'm going to find out.
    The Sacrifice
This ending tale of Abram' s daughters has many twists and turns. It is not the ending you expected either. Forgiveness is the greatest gift of all.
    A drawn-out soap opera
This review is for all 5 of the Abram's daughter's series. This was a disappointment from Beverly Lewis, whose books I usually enjoy. I found this series to be like a soap opera. The cast of characters was too large, and hard to keep track of who's who.
