Good

I got dead romantic about two years ago and loved it. I wasn't disappointed, although I guess the plot wasn't very meety, but it was still good to read. I liked all the raw emotion in it, and you can see the journey that Jody goes threw in the book. I thought the ending was a little naff in one sense, but it didn't ruin it. Overall, an entertaining roller coaster ride of a listen, with an easy plot.

Pretty Bad Things begins: "Simpson fumbled getting the tape into the VCR. She was all, Which button is it? And I was like, How old are you and you can't even work a friggin' VCR?"

And then the reviewer was all, This is going to be a LONG book.

Paisley and Beau Argent are twins with a seriously tragic past. When they were six, their mother killed herself in front of them and they were lost in the woods for days looking for their father, who went to prison for holding up a hotel. But the story really begins when Beau finds letters from their father spanning the past ten years. Knowing that her father had actually been writing, Paisley decides to get herself expelled from her 5th boarding school. Naturally, she returns home, burns down her Grandmother's house, and she and Beau head to Las Vegas in search of their father.

Finding him is more difficult than they expected, so they (of course) choose to draw the attention of the media by robbing candy stores (but only of candy). Dubbed "The Wonder Twins", they become a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde in an attempt to reunite with their father.

I enjoy snark as much as the next bitchy girl, but Paisley's over-the-top attitude and pointed wit comes across as very false. Every line of dialogue is a quip. Not only is that annoying, it's exhausting.

And I enjoy melodrama as much as the next sheltered suburbanite, but this book has no anchor. From the very first moment, the characters are unrelatable. Something needs to be grounded- either the characters or the situation. This book has outlandish characters doing outlandish things in an outlandish setting. Millionaire twin orphans on the lam in Las Vegas robbing candy stores to find their jailed father and escape their ex-soap star, gun wielding grandmother? It sounds like a Disney Channel Movie trying to play with the big kids. All Pretty Bad Things needs is a musical number.

And I was like, I get it, Book. You're trying to be a teen version of The Hangover. But you don't need to try so hard. In fact, please don't.

Just so you don't think I'm all doom and gloom, I do like that Pretty Bad Things isn't a love story. And that the cover isn't a female torso.

But all in all, and feel free to let me know if this is too easy, Pretty Bad Things is a pretty bad thing.

Excellent candy-fuelled road trip for older teens.

Memorable, witty, and darkly humorous

From moment to moment, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story is told from the perspective of Louise, a highly observant (and snarky) young woman who lampoons her Southern Baptist family in all their garish, upper middle-class glory. I loved the narrator's descriptions, which were both original and dead-on, and thought the author's style was, overall, top-notch.

Some reviewers have commented that Louise's substance abuse and rebellion wasn't believable, but I disagree. Throughout Louise's portrayal of her family, I FELT her rebellion coming on. The substance abuse was foreshadowed very early in the story (with her penchant for drinking vanilla extract) and given the dark turn the story takes, it seemed entirely plausible to me. To give more rational explanation for her behavior, I think, would undermine Sumner's expert characterization of a troubled, religiously-repressed teenage girl. It rang very true in my opinion.

What might come as a surprise if you're not expecting it is the shift in tone. The books starts out fairly light and funny in an offbeat sort of way, taking a sudden dark turn that seems to come out of nowhere, but is actually quite neatly foreshadowed. I thought Sumner does an excellent job of presenting seemingly unimportant details, which later hit you over the head with their consequences.

So, why not five stars? If I have any criticism of this book, it's the ending. Sumner seems to be in her element with her withering descriptions of this Southern Baptist family; when Louise joins the circus, the book starts to fall flat. There are definitely some great moments in there, with amusing characters who are nearly as bizarre as her family members, but overall I thought the ending kind of fizzled. I didn't get the sense that Louise learned anything from her experiences, or made any progress either forward or backward. Everyone seemed to end in pretty much the same place they started, except perhaps a bit more frazzled and disillusioned.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed this book. It's the kind of book I will go back to and underline favorite passages. Sumner definitely has my attention.

A Southern Editor's Opinion

The School of Beauty and Charm is a stunning first novel. The intense, hilarious energy that Evan Connell describes as "Hieronymus Bosch in rural Georgia" is balanced by crisp, exquisite sentences. Sumner's tale is classic: a rebel comes of age in a small, conservative town, and like all great classics, it can be read again and again. The characters are real, and the writing is beautiful.

Florida, the mother of the protagonist, is a character like Dickens's Scrooge or Flaubert's Madame Bovary, who takes a room in the reader's mind and never quite moves out. Here she is rallying for her husband not to leave the house during a tornado warning:

When he returned to the kitchen with his briefcase, Florida was ready for him.

Sunlight Through the Cracks

Lina is a 15 year old Lithunian girl who is transported with her family and other intellectuals like cattle on a train to Siberia. The beginning starts like many of the heart-wrenching novels about the atrocities of Hitler during WWII, however, veers on a diferent course of the untold horrors of what happened when Stalin's Russia marched in. Lina and family fight to stay alive in the biting cold, working on a beet farm berated by soldiers and treated like trash.

Despite the unbearable conditions, Lina finds strength and draws and documents the events and details of their condition in secret; manages to make a friend in Andress; and fights each day to save her family and persevere. This is a tale of the determination of the human spirit as told through the eyes of a young girl.

Ruta Sepetys delved into her own Lithuanian roots and discovered much of what she uses in this work of historical fiction. Truly breathtaking and frighteningly real, this novel transcends the bounds of your typical YA novel. Just when you thought you knew everything about 1941, a story like this sweeps in to shed light on another untold tale. Be sure to keep listening to the prologue and interview with the author; simply amazing.

Great historical fiction story

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This is a wonderful story about World War II that hasn't been told before. This is a story about family, friendship and love in extreme conditions. The piece that was most emotional was listening to the author state her "author's note" at the end of the book. It is obvious that this story is very close to her heart.

Bleak but important story. Wrong narrator.

What made the experience of listening to Between Shades of Gray the most enjoyable?

I valued learning about this part of history that most of us know next to nothing about. It's an important story to be told.

I do not want to give anything away, so I will just say the discovery of the large owl and the events that followed.

Grab a Kleenex!!

Sitting down to read this book, I was instantly captured. The setting, the plot line, the characters- they all flowed together in a way that only a seasoned author could pen. However, upon finishing this novel, and reading more about this author, this is her debut novel and she was just 15 when she wrote it. Wow! That is some AWESOME work! But, be warned! If you sit down to read a copy of this book, you MUST take stock in Kleenex! This is a definite water works book.

This sweet author created a novel that is full of heartache yet full of hope and love. There were serious bits, lots of them,but there were, also, a few funny bits, just enough to keep this novel flowing in an ever changing way. There was a touch of mystery to the story with Kennley. He had a past. One that could cause problems. But what will happen if that past catches up to him? That, added to Kahlen's issues, really intrigued me with this novel, and kept me turning page after

I highly recommend that everyone give this young, rising author a chance. Her novel, worthy of 4 stars, will capture your heart and keep you hooked until the last page. For a first time author, this young lady gets two thumbs up from me! Well done, Paige, and I am anxious to read your next novel, Seven.

Afraid of Living

Typical teenager is the last thought to come to mind when thinking about Kahlen Thomas. Things become even worse for her once her only and best friend, Emma, dies.
