Loved it!

I had been waiting to read The Pillow Book of Lotus Lowenstein for months, so I was absolutely thrilled when I finally got my little hands on it.

I loved the basic idea behind this book - Lotus (love, love the name) is extremely precocious - she is definitely a square peg NOT trying to fit in a round hole. In fact, Lotus thrives on the fact that she is different and what does set her apart is that these differences seem to come naturally to her - she is not trying to stand out just for the sake of attention. Indeed, Lotus is quirky and seems completely clueless to the fact that she is the one who is a little "off" with the rest of her life - This made her a very likeable character to me.

Among her many quirks, Lotus is in love with all things French and France - in fact, it is her dream to visit Paris - although at the rate she is going, this dream is going to remain a dream (thanks to her terrible famille(family)! Yep, although Lotus has beautiful dreams - she is the product of a middle class family with an out of work papa, a new age maman and a chess prodigy as a frère (I can do these French/English references all day! Since I am French myself and is one of the things I really enjoyed about this book!). I read this book in practically one sitting.

I loved the Lotus character because she was herself at all times and she was okay with the fact (for the most part) that she was not part of the "in" crowd and not part of that "cliché" of popular girls. It was refreshing to read about a character who saw the world through such different glasses. It was also great to read about her passions for Paris - I mean she even goes on to open a French Club at her school! Now that is dedication.

Of course there is the required best friend and the "maybe" boyfriend, but really this wonderful YA is about a young girl who is not afraid to be herself and not afraid to find her passions and voice her desires for her life.Quirky and charming.

overly-perky attempt fails to appeal to teen readers

While this book could potentially be entertaining as a light fluffy read, don't expect to get much out of it in the way of intellect - it lacks both substance and purpose. The plot-line is somewhat dull and the book is devoid of any higher meanings or overarching messages.

Chelsey's Narrative is Gripping

HCI's Louder Than Words series features stories about serious issues from real teens who have experienced them.

When she was in first grade, her mother died from leukemia. When she was 14, her father was murdered by a burglar in a hotel room. This is Chelsey Shannon's account of what happened next. Being a teen is all about exploring who you are and what you are going to be. Chelsey now feels she has no one who really knows or understands her. She barely exists, thinking and crying about her father. Chelsey's aunt moves in and tries to take care of her, but is stretched among several responsibilities.

Another aunt has Chelsey fly out to the west coast with the possibility of staying out there. But Chelsey has always enjoyed writing, and is now doing it more than ever to help her with her grief. She learns about a school for creative teens back home and decides to return. This time, though, her old house has been sold, so she moves back in with her first aunt.

A new school is not the entirely fresh start she is hoping for as she feels more alone than ever. She is biracial and was used to being in a predominately white area. This school is much more diverse, but Chelsey becomes shy and can't figure out how to fit in with any of the teens she meets. Even with therapy, she feels like she will never get over the desperate feeling of being orphaned.

While dark, CHELSEY is more about Chelsey's journey out of the depths rather than a focus on the awful things that happened to her. Getting over such unthinkable tragedies is not as easy as it is often depicted in TV or the movies, and Chelsey's narrative is gripping in its first person account. She has respect for all those who try to help her get through her terrible time, and it is then with hope and maturity rather than bitterness and resentment that she emerges. Chelsey is powerful but not perfect, making her story relatable for anyone.

Profound

The cover of this book is deceiving and deserves a better description (photo) of such a profound story. The childlike model on the cover does not resonate with what's inside. This is an incredible journey of a young girl who experiences the loss of both parents before she is 15 years old. Her story is compelling and uplifting and heartbreaking. Her ability to describe how she handles these losses and not turn to medication is infectious. She is a very gifted young writer and we would like to see more of her work. Including her poetry. This is a must read for anyone who is struggling with accepting the death of a loved one. Turning her agony into art through this book is gift to all who read it!

Amazing!

When Chelsey's father was violently murdered, days before her fourteenth birthday. She is now an orphan and has no clue what to do. She is forced to come to terms with living with her aunt and the home life that comes with it. She also is starting a new school. Chelsey is also trying to make sense of what happened and how she got here. Despite all that happened, Chelsey finds a way to flourish.

Chelsey's story was heartbreaking.

How To Make A Bird truly meets my definition of a coming of age book for YA.

The novel is ladden with "moments" that are geared towards helping the main character better understand her life and her role in it - as well as her role in the family dynamics. In fact, this novel is tied into family drama and all the joys and pains it can bring.

While I did like the basic premise, I found the book incredibly heavy to read - including the writing which was a little bit more "prosaic" than it really needed to be. In my mind, this story was hard enough to read without having to deal with some writing that could be considered, in my opinion, a little bit over the top at times.

I think this novel was incredibly well intentioned - but maybe just not my style.

Fly Like a Bird

I'll start this review by letting you know that there isn't a way to write it without giving away some of the story. I'll do my best to avoid as much as I can but if you are interested in getting the full emotional experience (and you should be) then I would say skipping down to the last paragraph of this review will assure that you do so as spoiler free as possible.

How to Make a Bird is a beautifully written but tragic story of how one girl wades through family dysfunction as she attempts to deal with a variety of unimaginable circumstances. The story showcases Mannie as she takes an emotional journey through her past and present to find much needed acceptance of her mother's mental instability and then her brother's surprising death. Though this journey is one primarily of self-discovery she also has a number of realizations about the role both her family and various friends play in events as well.

What a fantastic voyage it was, well for the reader anyway. It wasn't periphery, no no, it jumped right into the sorrowful heart of the matter, directly from the jump. I knew immediately that Mannie was dealing with a great deal of emotional turmoil but the question really was why. Enter Murray's phenomenal writing. She did an excellent job of both showing and telling Mannie's story. The true depth of emotion was endless but was laid out in small pieces. I enjoyed putting piece of the puzzle together until finally the full picture was revealed. A picture, not of a strong and happy family, but rather one of parents leading separate lives together and children who were vying for any moments of normalcy they could find. Ultimately events that end in tragic circumstances.

Mannie's endurance was no small feat.

Philip Reed Does it Again

Against All Persuasions

This story is about a growing young Mexicano boy from my village of Los Barriles in Baja California Sur. A boy with an inherent athletic ability and acrobatics that he employs playing football in the little concha in the center of town. He acquired his phenomenal sense of movement and balance through fishing with his father in an open panga on the Sea of Cortez. He is spotted by an American Soccer coach and awarded a scholarship at a California university to play on their college soccer team. Working with the team he soon comes of age, withstanding the false values and cultures, surrounding him in the United States. He stays true to the core of his own worth, with honesty and humility, despite the overwhelming culture of materialism surrounding him. His plight and internal dialog brought a lump to my throat and misty tears in my eyes as he resolves his self worth. The writers should be a acclaimed for their plain vanilla writing style that shows us through action packed soccer sequences what life is really about. A wonderful antidote to read, such a relief from corrupt moral values so prevalent among young North American culture in our times. It was a good clean healthy and refreshing read.

Ponga Boy, the story of a young up-and-coming soccer star from the little fishing village of Los Barilles, Mexico, comes at an appropriate time for middle readers who are interested in soccer. This is the book that could pull reluctant male readers into reading. Pitchu helps his father on their ponga (bait fishing boat), and on his spare time, he plays soccer with his town team. Although the boys play with homemade uniforms on a cement field, Pichu stands out for his gravity-defying moves. In one memorable game, a vacationing American soccer scout sees Pichu in action and offers him a scholarship to play soccer for the University of San Francisco. In America, Pichu faces many conflicts: prejudice, jealousy, and culture shock. Still, there are many Latino role models that help him along the way. Ultimately, Pichu must make a difficult choice and choose between his own opportunity and the opportunities of his family.
