WE WERE ALL LIED TO. THIS IS FICTION PEOPLE!!!
Words cannot describe how angry and betrayed I felt after realizing I wasted a credit on a book that is a complete LIE. I was promised to be purchasing a 'TRUE' story from a 'REAL' 15-year-old girl's diary but this is nothing more than drug propaganda of the 70's and Beatrice Spark's Mormon agenda. THAT IS THE TRUTH PEOPLE. YOU WERE ALL FOOLED.
I realized it was fake before I even did the research. No one (not even in the 70's) used language like "flabby-flab flab" "great great great!" not to mention the RIDICULOUS timeline events!!! She sticks a needle in her arm immediately after one accidental drug encounter? Oh, and of course she talks about being scared of pot AFTER using Heroin? I DON'T THINK SO. She magically goes from being scared of everyone in her school to having drug connections and a sex life? All in 18 MONTHS?!? WTF!!! How did anyone buy this as real?
I can't believe this is legally sold as non-fiction in the year 2014 when back in the 70's the real author came forward admitting "some of it" to be her work. Beatrice Sparks was a Mormon youth counsellor who was mistaken labelled a "Dr."(although she earned no doctorate) and sold this story for a profit. She later wrote "Jay's Journal" which was based on yet another 'TRUE' story and what she did with that one is unforgivable. It was based on the journal of Alden Barret who was a 16-yr-old boy who committed suicide. Alden's parents gave Sparks the journal and trusted her to get it published but she butchered his character instead and twisted it into her own Mormon-taught propaganda about satanism. She ruined lives for money. If you read Jay's journal you would also notice that both 'Alice' and 'Jay' use the same messed up jargon such as "quick quick quick" because it's the voice of Sparks NOT any real teenager.
This personally offends me because as someone who uses a diary and has experience with real addiction it is WRONG to call it real. Well intended or not, I want my credit back and for God's sake, change the book's description!!!!!
    Not a fan
I I listened to this book in hopes that I could share it with my students, but I think some of my students have experienced worse than this story. I also think the terminology and the words that are used would throw them off as well.
    Hit home
I dropped out of college and am a nomad so I really identified with this book.

    Title: Tyro
    Author: David McRobbie
    Narrator: Richard Aspel

Length: 5 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-24-06
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Teens, Fiction & Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Who are his allies, and who are his enemies? In sorting this out, Andrew can only watch in horror as the situation gets worse, much worse. From the author of See How They Run comes a tense and gripping novel that challenges the authority of "traditions" and what it takes to be a man.
    Editorial Reviews:
Today's young adult listeners may not be able to visualize the 1950's Scottish dockyard that serves as the focal point of David McRobbie's novel, but they will certainly recognize the pain of being bullied. The bullying suffered by 16-year-old Andrew is brutally depicted by McRobbie, who received the Book of the Year Award from the Children's Book Council of Australia for Tyro.
A "tyro" is defined as a novice or beginner, but Richard Aspel, the veteran performer of this audiobook, brings over 20 years of experience to his recording. He convincingly becomes the thuggish and malicious dockyard workers as well as the innocent teen narrator. Aspel's skill with accents is especially evident in this rich performance.

    A DOCKYARD APPRENTICESHIP
1953 in a Scotish shipyard, sixteen-year-old Andrew Kinnear is eager to begin his apprenticeship as a ship's engineer at the Dalrossan Dockyard. He is so excited because when he finishes the apprenticeship he will be able to travel the world in his new job. But he soon realizes that there are traditions of bullying the new apprentices. Andrew Kinnear is put through his paces by Jack Coultree the workplace bully. Some difficult situations arise when Andrew is ridiculed and teased, before being put through a humiliating initiation ritual.
We follow Andrew through his emotions and thoughts as he deals with potentially difficult inter-personal work situations.
I recommend this story for anyone is interested in dockyards, or wanting to know how to handle bullies while being an apprentice, or just want a good old fashion moving story. I enjoyed this audio and my heart really went out to Andrew everytime the bullies appeared.

  • Caesar Audiobook by Patrick O'Brian

    Title: Caesar
Subtitle: The Life of a Panda Leopard
    Author: Patrick O'Brian
    Narrator: John Lee
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-29-04
    Publisher: Books on Tape
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Teens, Fiction & Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
When he was fourteen years old and beset by chronic ill health, Patrick O'Brian began creating his first fictional character. "I did it in my bedroom, and a little when I should have been doing my homework," he confessed in a note on the original dust-jacket. Caesar tells the picaresque, enchanting, and quite bloodthirsty story of a creature whose father is a giant panda and whose mother is a snow leopard. Through the eyes and voice of this fabulous creature, we learn of his life as a cub, his first hunting exploits, his first encounters with man, his capture and taming.
Caesar was published in 1930, three months after O'Brian's fifteenth birthday, but the dry wit and unsentimental precision O'Brian readers savor in the Aubrey/Maturin series is already in evidence. The book combines Stephen Maturin's fascination and encyclopedic knowledge of natural history with the narrative charm of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. It was published in England and the United States, and in translation in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Japan. Reviews hailed the author as the "boy-Thoreau".
    Critic Reviews:
"Written by the author at the age of 15, this literary examination of the life of a leopard is surprisingly adult, both in the maturity of its composition and its universal appeal. John Lee skillfully attends to the story, making the listener feel close to the animal's struggles and discoveries....Fine fodder for family listening." (AudioFile)
"O'Brian was only 15 when [Caesar] was published, but he already possessed an instinct for deft plotting and uncomplicated narrative." (The New York Times)
"The tale, written in the first person, displays the talents of a precocious adolescent who already was adept at painting a setting and filling it with characters that are believable." (Kirkus Reviews)
    Members Reviews:
The writer as a very young man, but not for the very young reader
Bottom line first: It is hard to recommend this to anyone not a Patrick OâBrian fan. While he wrote it as a child there is much in the way of animals fighting, killing and eating each other. Reading it helps to emphasize that even as a very young writer one of his skills was in the telling stories of things remote from his, or the readerâs life making the details seem very authentic. But it is not a good choice for the young and may not have enough depth for a reader not a fan of the author.
    L}LL}L}L}L}L}L}L}L}L}L{}{}{}{{{}{}{{}
The story goes that a very young Patrick Oâ Brian age various listed as 12-15, was ill and wrote Caesar as an entertainment for himself. He had an interest in botany and had been given a copy of Mr Woodâs Natural History. The topic of wild life was on his mind. Much of this from the Mr OâBrianâs Preface to my hardback edition.
Caesar the narrator of the story is a Panda Leopard. There is no such beast but it suited the child to create one. Over the next 94 pages is a fairly tightly written and consistent story of the experiences of a powerful carnivore living in the wild and for a time as a pet of a human.
Much of the story follows the need of a large animal to hunt and eat as well as the life and sudden death of various animals and family members.
    Disneyâs Bambi, this is not.

    Publisher's Summary:
Throwing Itis a novel written by Jay Tando. It is a fictional story about a football player's life spanning his high school years, finding romance in the Seattle dance clubs, through his professional career taking him all over the world 1984-2013.
    Members Reviews:
    Quite Enjoyable
In his Book, Jay pulls the reader into the life of Ray McQuayne. The reader is immersed in football, music, family, friends, girls, and school. The casual way in which it was written is the way it pulls you in. Don't worry, the football isn't over powering if you are not a football fan. I am not, but I found myself wanting to know the outcome of those games because I was pulled in by the character, Ray. He is quite likeable.
The music is another highlight in the book. For many, music is a vastly important part of their lives. They can remember when they first heard a particular song, seeing a favorite band, and can recall how music may have shaped their lives. Adding in the music that was playing in the background added to the life of the character. In the meantime, it was a bit nostalgic as I looked back on my high school days remembering those songs and others.
I would recommend this book. Quite enjoyable.
    Good for Jay
I think Jay Tando, frustrated actor, needed to write this semi-autobiography as much as I needed to read it. The protagonist, one Ray McQuayne, is a naturally-gifted quarterback, true to typecasting. Jay, however, eases up a little on typecasting, perhaps reflecting competently upon his natural acting career.
"Throwing It" is a terrific relaxing read for anyone who came of age in the 1980's who still believes in the non-relativist nature of sports as they are presently recognized. Sure, it could have used an Edit, but for a dollar, I'm grateful Jay wrote it. Any intellectual property belonging to "Skoochie's" is also in this game. I love you, Man.
    great read!
Reads very easy and its a great story to boot. Personally I identified immediately with the character Ray. If you grew up in the 80's you will love this book. If John Hughes were still around (I wish he was) I could totally see this being a movie..... of course it would be set in Shermer Illinois and not the Pacific Northwest... but I digress. Anyway, 5 stars from me only because there isn't a sixth one to give. My reasons are, readability, story line, genre and the clever connection Mr. Tando used to tie in real life people, places and events. You just have to read it to understand what I mean. Great job Jay! Waiting for the next one.
    Great book!
A book about a guy growing up in the 80s? Yes, please! This is definitely one of those books that once you pick up it's hard to put down. An especially good read if you're into football or into the 80's club scene (which is what I enjoyed the most). Me being obsessed with the 80s I really enjoyed how he takes this time to describe the clubs and all the music that is being played. Great job! I hope to see another book to come out from Mr. Tando!
    Throwing it
If you like football or just a VERY good book, you'll LOVE LOVE this book. It's the best book I've read in 2013 and will read it again. Read it, you'll like it. No....you'll LOVE it.

    Publisher's Summary:
Ten Simon Lewis tales read by:
The New York Times and USA Today best-selling collection of short stories chronicling the adventures of Simon Lewis as he trains to become a Shadowhunter is now available for the first time with an all-star cast of narrators!
Simon Lewis has been a human and a vampire, and now he is becoming a Shadowhunter. The events of City of Heavenly Fire left him stripped of his memories, and Simon isn't sure who he is anymore. So when the Shadowhunter Academy reopens, Simon throws himself into this new world of demon hunting, determined to find himself again. Whomever this new Simon might be.
But the Academy is a Shadowhunter institution, which means it has some problems. Like the fact that non-Shadowhunter students have to live in the basement. At least Simon's trained in weaponry - even if it's only from hours of playing D&D.
Join Simon on his journey to become a Shadowhunter, and learn about the Academy's illustrious history along the way through guest lecturers such as Jace Herondale, Tessa Gray, and Magnus Bane. Written by Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson, and Robin Wasserman, these moving and hilarious short stories are perfect for the fan who just can't get enough of the Shadowhunters.
Full cast of narrators includes Torrance Coombs, Sam Heughan, Keahu Kahuanui, and Brett Dalton.
    Members Reviews:
Great narration and story about Shadowhunters
I listened to the audio of Shadowhunters. And I dont know how Cassandra Clare managed it, but she wrangled some seriously famous actors (well, famous to me at least!) to narrate the ten tales. And each narrator brought their own flare and style to the books. Some of my favorites include: Devon Bostick, Luke Pasqualino, Keahu Kahuanui, Brett Dalton, and of course Sam Heughan.
While I enjoyed all ten tales, I really appreciated how the tales were interconnected, and provided us with both modern Shadowhunter stories as well as historic tales. Its not practical to review all ten tales; here are some individual reviews. My favorite of the collection was Born to Endless Night, written by Ms. Clare and Ms. Rees Brennan. In this tale, Magnus and Alec decide to adopt a baby warlock. The baby shows up on the doorstep of the academy where Magnus is guest-lecturing. Of the two, Alec takes to adopting the baby first. And lets just say that Magnus making a bottle for the baby was totally swoony. I dont really know what this tale had to do with Simon, but I also dont really care. This was also the tale where I realized I picture the actors from the TV series as the characters.
Another favorite tale is Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy, also by Ms. Clare and Ms. Rees Breenan. (I think I see a pattern here!) This story is hilarious and all Simon. Who else would pack nothing but funny t-shirts when going off to Idris to learn to be a Shadowhunter. The scene with the girls and talking about when Simon bit Jace had me literally laughing at my desk at work.
I might have bitten him. It was more like a tiny nibble.
Was he delicious, Julie asked? He looks like he would be delicious.
And Izzy staking her claim on Simon? Just as great. Excellent narration by Devon Bostick. And a great start to a compilation book.
Pale Kings and Princes by Ms. Clare and Ms.
