Lovecraft Narrator: Peter Coates Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 7 minutes Release date: February 26, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: 'The Book' is an unfinished short story by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft, believed to have been written in late 1933. It was first published in the journal Leaves in 1938, after Lovecraft's death. In the story fragment, the narrator is given an ancient book by a strange bookseller, and when he takes it home and examines it, weird and sinister events ensue. In October 1933, Lovecraft wrote in a letter: I am at a sort of standstill in writing—disgusted at much of my older work, and uncertain as to avenues of improvement. In recent weeks I have done a tremendous amount of experimenting with different styles and perspectives, but have destroyed most of the results.[2] The H. P. Lovecraft Encyclopedia suggests that 'The Book' was one of the undestroyed experiments—an attempt to translate Lovecraft's poem sequence Fungi from Yuggoth into prose. (The completed fragment corresponds to the first three sonnets, which form more of a coherent narrative than the rest of the sequence).

  • At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/759784 to listen full audiobooks. Title: At the Mountains of Madness Author: H.P. Lovecraft Narrator: Peter Coates Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 4 hours 22 minutes Release date: February 26, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: 'At the Mountains of Madness' is a science fiction-horror novella by American author H. P. Lovecraft, written in February/March 1931. The story details the events of a disastrous expedition to Antarctica in September 1930, and what is found there by a group of explorers led by the narrator, Dr. William Dyer of Miskatonic University. Throughout the story, Dyer details a series of previously untold events in the hope of deterring another group of explorers who wish to return to the continent. These events include the discovery of an ancient civilization older than the human race, and realization of Earth's past told through various sculptures and murals. The story was inspired by Lovecraft's interest in Antarctic exploration; the continent was still not fully explored in the 1930s. Lovecraft explicitly draws from Edgar Allan Poe's novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, and he may have used other stories for inspiration. Many story elements, such as the formless 'shoggoth', recur in other Lovecraft works. The story has been adapted and used for graphic novels, video games, and musical works.

  • The Evil Clergyman by H.P. Lovecraft

Lovecraft Narrator: Peter Coates Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 10 minutes Release date: February 26, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: 'The Evil Clergyman' is an excerpt from a letter written by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft in 1933. After his death, it was published in the April 1939 issue of Weird Tales as a short story. The story was later adapted into the unreleased 1987 anthology film Pulse Pounder. The story begins in the attic of an ancient house. The narrator's companion refers to the former owner of the house and the presumably violent end that befell him. He advises the narrator not to stay after dark or touch anything, especially the small object on a table, which the companion seems to fear considerably. The narrator is then left alone in the attic; he notes the many theological and classical books, and one bookshelf in particular containing books on magic. He feels a considerable curiosity for the forbidden object on the table. The narrator finds a strange flashlight-like device in his pocket that produces a peculiar violet glow. He attempts to illuminate the object on the table with this strange light, which he describes as being composed of particles. The object makes a crackling sound like a sparking vacuum tube, and takes on a pinkish glow with a vague white shape taking form from its center. The narrator, feeling that his surroundings are taking on strange new properties, realizes that he is not alone; the sinister newcomer is described as wearing clerical garb typical of the Anglican Church. The newcomer begins throwing magical books into a fireplace.

  • Nyarlathotep by H.P. Lovecraft
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/759781 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Nyarlathotep Author: H.P. Lovecraft Narrator: Peter Coates Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 8 minutes Release date: February 26, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: Nyarlathotep is a fictional character created by H. P. Lovecraft. The character is a malign deity in the Lovecraft Mythos, a shared universe. First appearing in Lovecraft's 1920 prose poem 'Nyarlathotep', he was later mentioned in other works by Lovecraft and by other writers. Later writers describe him as one of the Outer Gods, a malevolent pantheon. In a 1921 letter to Reinhardt Kleiner, Lovecraft related the dream he had had—described as 'the most realistic and horrible [nightmare] I have experienced since the age of ten'—that served as the basis for his prose poem 'Nyarlathotep'. In the dream, he received a letter from his friend Samuel Loveman that read:Don't fail to see Nyarlathotep if he comes to Providence. He is horrible—horrible beyond anything you can imagine—but wonderful. He haunts one for hours afterwards. I am still shuddering at what he showed.Lovecraft commented:I had never heard the name NYARLATHOTEP before, but seemed to understand the allusion. Nyarlathotep was a kind of itinerant showman or lecturer who held forth in public halls and aroused widespread fear and discussion with his exhibitions. These exhibitions consisted of two parts—first, a horrible—possibly prophetic—cinema reel; and later some extraordinary experiments with scientific and electrical apparatus. As I received the letter, I seemed to recall that Nyarlathotep was already in Providence.... I seemed to remember that persons had whispered to me in awe of his horrors, and warned me not to go near him. But Loveman's dream letter decided me.... As I left the house I saw throngs of men plodding through the night, all whispering affrightedly and bound in one direction. I fell in with them, afraid yet eager to see and hear the great, the obscure, the unutterable Nyarlathotep. Will Murray has speculated that this dream image of Nyarlathotep may have been inspired by the inventor Nikola Tesla, whose well-attended lectures did involve extraordinary experiments with electrical apparatus and whom some saw as a sinister figure.

  • Hypnos by H.P. Lovecraft

Lovecraft Narrator: Peter Coates Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 18 minutes Release date: February 26, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: 'Hypnos' is a short story by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft, penned in March 1922 and first published in the May 1923 issue of National Amateur. 'Hypnos' is a first-person narrative, written from the perspective of an unnamed character living in Kent and later London, England. The narrator writes that he fears sleep, and is resolved to write his story down lest it drive him further mad, regardless of what people think after reading it. Lovecraft dedicated this story to his longtime friend Samuel Loveman, who featured in the dreams that inspired Lovecraft's 'The Statement of Randolph Carter' and 'Nyarlathotep'. Loveman suggested it was the best thing Lovecraft had ever written up to that point in time, as mentioned by Lovecraft in a letter. The plot-germ of the story is found in Lovecraft's commonplace book, in an early entry reading, 'The man who would not sleep--dares not sleep--takes drugs to keep himself awake. Finally falls asleep-& something happens.'

Title: The Woods By Little Brooke Author: Michael H Van Der Voort Narrator: Robin Reads Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 38 minutes Release date: February 23, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: We were in Nell’s the day I told them about the thing in the woods. It was broad daylight, and, in the daylight, I felt safe. Plus, I wasn’t alone, not then. Though I was only ten, small and, to my mind, vulnerable, I was surrounded by four, sensible, levelheaded, adults. Men. Men who, to me at least, seemed massive, solid, and unbeatable, like giants made of steel. These weren’t men who got scared. These were grown-up men, men who went to grown-up jobs and did grown-up man things like fixing cars and drinking coffee. Men who wore overalls and cussed and didn’t have time for things like fairy tales and stuff about the boogeyman. They were too busy doing men stuff, like fighting and swearing and drinking beer. They couldn’t be scared. Or so I thought.
