Lovecraft Narrator: Peter Coates Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 2 hours 40 minutes Release date: February 23, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: The Whisperer in Darkness is a 26,000-word novella by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. Written February–September 1930, it was first published in Weird Tales, August 1931. Similar to The Colour Out of Space (1927), it is a blend of horror and science fiction. Although it makes numerous references to the Cthulhu Mythos, the story is not a central part of the mythos, but reflects a shift in Lovecraft's writing at this time towards science fiction. The story also introduces the Mi-go, an extraterrestrial race of fungoid creatures. The story is told by Albert N. Wilmarth, an instructor of literature at Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts. When local newspapers report strange things seen floating in rivers during a historic Vermont flood, Wilmarth becomes embroiled in a controversy regarding the reality and significance of the sightings. He sides with the skeptics, blaming old legends about monsters living in uninhabited hills that abduct people venturing too close to their territory. He receives a letter from Henry Wentworth Akeley, a man living in an isolated farmhouse near Townshend, Vermont, who claims to have proof that will convince Wilmarth he must stop questioning the creatures' existence. The two exchange letters that include an account of the extraterrestrial race chanting with human agents in worship of several beings, including Cthulhu and Nyarlathotep, the latter of whom 'shall put on the semblance of men, the waxen mask and the robe that hides'...

Lovecraft Narrator: Peter Coates Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 12 minutes Release date: February 23, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: 'A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson' is a short story written in 1917 by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was first published in the September 1917 issue of the United Amateur, under the pseudonym Humphrey Littlewit, Esq. The story is a spoof of Lovecraft's antiquarian affectations. Littlewit, the narrator, is born August 20, 1690–200 years to the day before Lovecraft's birthdate—making him nearly 228 years old as he writes a memoir. Critic Daniel Harms writes, 'While not one of the most inspired of his pieces, it at least shows that HPL realized his pretensions... of being an older, cultured gentleman of an earlier era, and could make fun of himself.'

Lovecraft Narrator: Peter Coates Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 9 minutes Release date: February 23, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: 'Polaris' is a short story by H. P. Lovecraft, written in 1918 and first published in the December 1920 issue of the amateur journal The Philosopher. It is noteworthy as the story that introduces Lovecraft's fictional Pnakotic Manuscripts, the first of his arcane tomes. Critic William Fulwiler writes that ''Polaris' is one of Lovecraft's most autobiographical stories, reflecting his feelings of guilt, frustration, and uselessness during World War I. Like the narrator, HPL was 'denied a warrior's part', for he 'was feeble and given to strange faintings when subjected to stress and hardships''. Like many Lovecraft stories, 'Polaris' was in part inspired by a dream, which he described in a letter: 'Several nights ago I had a strange dream of a strange city-a city of many palaces and gilded domes, lying in a hollow betwixt ranges of grey, horrible hills.... I was, as I said, aware of this city visually. I was in it and around it. But certainly I had no corporeal existence.'

Lovecraft Narrator: Peter Coates Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 2 hours 38 minutes Release date: February 23, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: 'The Shadow Out of Time' is a novella by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft. Written between November 1934 and February 1935, it was first published in the June 1936 issue of Astounding Stories. The story describes time and space travel by mind transfer. The premise is that a person in a given place and time can switch bodies with someone who is elsewhere or elsewhen. Other writers have re-used this concept in later works, such as drinking tea from Red Forest leaves in the television series 12 Monkeys and long-range communication stones in the Stargate SG-1 television series. As with other Lovecraftian works, this story features otherworldy alien beings that are not simply variations on humans or other familiar terrestrial animals.

Title: Wisey's Game Author: Michael Van Der Voort Narrator: Robin Reads Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 43 minutes Release date: February 23, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: “It is important that when you call, you are first completely sure to whom it is you are calling.” I think I can honestly say that, up until the point that it closed temporarily during the global pandemic, I’d had visited The Anchor pub for at least a single pint, virtually every night for the past 45 years. There were, of course, exceptions. In 1992, I had a smash in my car and had to spend a night in the hospital, and midway through 1986 I got married and spent my wedding day and night away from the place. I didn’t visit The Anchor on either of those days, though in the case of my wedding night, half the people who would otherwise have been in the pub joined me at my reception venue, so it was pretty much the same thing anyway.

Lovecraft Narrator: Peter Coates Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 1 hour 13 minutes Release date: February 22, 2024 Genres: Horror Publisher's Summary: 'The Colour Out of Space' is a science fiction/horror short story by American author H. P. Lovecraft, written in March 1927. In the tale, an unnamed narrator pieces together the story of an area known by the locals as the 'blasted heath' in the wild hills west of the fictional town of Arkham, Massachusetts. The narrator discovers that many years ago a meteorite crashed there, poisoning every living being nearby; vegetation grows large but foul tasting, animals are driven mad and deformed into grotesque shapes, and the people go insane or die one by one. Lovecraft began writing 'The Colour Out of Space' immediately after finishing his previous short novel, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, and in the midst of final revision on his horror fiction essay 'Supernatural Horror in Literature'. Seeking to create a truly alien life form, he drew inspiration from numerous fiction and nonfiction sources. First appearing in the September 1927 edition of Hugo Gernsback's science fiction magazine Amazing Stories, 'The Colour Out of Space' became one of Lovecraft's most popular works, and remained his personal favorite of his short stories. It was adapted into feature films in 1965, 1987, 2010, and 2019

P. Lovecraft in September 1922 and published in the February 1924 issue of Weird Tales. It contains the first mention of Lovecraft's fictional text the Necronomicon. The story opens with the unnamed narrator preparing to commit suicide. Lamenting his fate, he reflects upon the events which led him to this moment. The narrator and his friend, St. John, are a pair of loners who both have a deranged interest in robbing graves. They constantly defile crypts and often keep souvenirs of their nocturnal expeditions. Since they reside in the same house, they have the opportunity to set up a sort of morbid museum in their basement. Using the objects collected from the various graves they have robbed, the two men organize a private exhibition. The collection consists of headstones, preserved bodies, skulls, and several heads in different phases of decomposition. It also includes statues, frightful paintings, and a locked portfolio bound in tanned human skin. One day, the two learn of a particular grave, which sparks a profound interest in them: an old grave in a Holland cemetery which holds a legendary tomb raider within, one who is said to have stolen, many years ago, a 'potent thing from a mighty sepulchre.' They travel to the old cemetery where the man was buried...
