I've loved all of the Debbie Macomber books I've read to date. I can read one of her books in a day or two. I can't put them down once I start. I just finished the Cedar Cove Series and the Midnight Sons Series. I truly enjoyed both series.
LOVE HAS A WAY YOU CAN't DENY IT FOR LONG
I will HATE to see this series come to an end. It has been a very good read getting to know all the people of Hard Luck,Alaska and seeing them fall in love and have babies. Another generation of Hard Luck becoming friends when they grow up. There is something to be said
for small towns and friends the perfect place to raise children. You almost feel like your living there with them. Thank you Debbie for more
writing that puts you right there in the story.
    Mind Boggling
The story was a interesting and keeps your mind wondering if it really is going to turn out the way you thought.

The Silent Country is a vast and beautiful wilderness, a place which holds secrets and stories that are rarely spoken. TV producer Veronica Anderson travels to the Northern Territory to retrace the journey of an expedition that had set out 50 years earlier to film the outback, but which mysteriously ended in tragedy. Of the group, led by the eccentric Maxim Topov, few are still alive and they are reluctant to talk about the intriguing events. It is through the help of local N.T. Park Ranger, Jamie McIntosh, that Veronica begins to piece together the puzzle and discover the answers. These answers break the silence and change her life.

    Great
I really enjoyed the story and the depiction of outback Australia. Maxim Topov lives in a world all his own.
Great Tale of the Australian Outback
What did you like most about The Silent Country?
At first I was dubious about how this story was unfolding but, as it progressed, I became more engrossed. I found it to be a great story about the great Australian outback.
What did you like best about this story?
The story unfolded very satisfyingly and it was good listening. In particular, it satisfied my yearning for tales of rural and remote Australia.
Have you listened to any of Kate Hoods other performances? How does this one compare?
I don't recall listening to Kate Hood previously but this was a good performance.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There was no one great moment but the story involved a series of events that reflected life in Australia, particularly the outback.
    Any additional comments?
I have been a little ambivalent about Di Morrissey as an author, I have read only a couple of titles and they seemed a bit predictable. And this one is too. And yet the characters in all her books come to life for me and she is a great story-teller. I feel like a child wanting "happy ever after" endings which she seems to deliver but, more than than, she tells her stories in interesting ways. I expect I shall now read (or listen to) more of her many books.

    Title: Waiting for Columbus
    Author: Thomas Trofimuk
    Narrator: Grover Gardner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-25-09
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Found in the treacherous Strait of Gibraltar, a man who answers only to the name of Christopher Columbus is delivered to a mental institution in Sevilla, Spain. Nurse Consuela, a lonely young woman searching for love, who listens to his fantastical tales of adventure and romance day after day, tries desperately to make some sense of why this man has been locked up. Waiting for Columbus vividly and tenderly explores the fragility of the mind when faced with incomprehensible pain and a timely look at how the psychological reverberations of terrorism continue long after the blast.
©2009 Thomas Trofimuk; (P)2009 Blackstone Audio, Inc.
    Editorial Reviews:
Thomas Trofimuk's novel is full of nuance and moments of déjà vu. His protagonists all have something in common: they are unknowingly searching for something they cannot name, while the answers lay in their pasts. Columbus himself becomes a metaphor; the lost navigator on a ship encased in fog, wondering if to move in any direction at all is better than staying still. Grover Gardner is perfectly suited as narrator, with his confident inflection and stern tone. Gardner's voice easily becomes the voice of Columbus: all-knowing, consistent, and firm. His performance makes tangible the sensuality of this work, which, at heart, is about the complexity and specificity of our individual psyches and the influence of the past on our lives. The subtleties of Trofimuk's narrative thrive with Gardner's mysterious inflection, which continually hints at the elusiveness of memory, the impossibility of suppressing desire, and the inevitability of revelation of that which is suppressed.
    Critic Reviews:
"Trofimuk is a master of feeling." (Globe and Mail)
    Members Reviews:
    Enchanting Story
I had been hearing people talk about Thomas Trofimuk's book Waiting for Columbus every time I turned around so, I finally broke down and bought the audiobook from Audible. The book is narrated by Grover Gardner and he does an excellent job. So what's the story about? This mysterious man is found in the Straits of Gibraltar and is taken to a mental hospital in Spain. He insists he is Christopher Columbus. Throughout the story, Columbus tells stories to Nurse Consuela (who is falling in love with the storyteller). These stories tell about the loves of Christopher Columbus, of Columbus' struggle to get his ships and sail around the world, Columbus' fear of the Inquisition and his relationship with Queen Isabella. The stories are beautiful fantasies that have details of modern items interspersed in them (such as telephones) so that you never quite believe they are true but you desperately want them to be true. As Columbus tells his stories, Nurse Consuela and the doctors at the institution are trying to figure out who this man is and what has made him disappear into this fantasy world.
Overall, this was one of the best books I've read in a long time. At times, the story would slow down a bit but I didn't really realize it because Trofimuk uses language so well. His descriptions, his word choice, his sentence structure are all unique and enchanting.

La vida es un tango, che!
Would you consider the audio edition of La vida es un tango [Life Is a Tango] to be better than the print version?
The audio version is well performed. Very helpful for practicing spanish as spoken in Buenos Aires. Would recommend it rather than the print version. Also one can download the pdf file with the texts and read it while listening.
Would you be willing to try another book from Dolores Soler-Espiauba? Why or why not?
Yes. This is the second audio book I listen to from this same author. I enjoyed both. They have a good combination of an entertaining story with many cultural notes.
Which character as performed by Mercedes Peralta Sanhueza was your favorite?
The protagonist Liliana was my favorite.
If you could rename La vida es un tango [Life Is a Tango], what would you call it?
I would call it "La vida es un tango, che"
    Any additional comments?
The story is not as well developed as the other book I listened to from the same author. Still I enjoyed it very much. It sounds very typically argentine with many cultural notes and references to places in Buenos Aires. And to the contrary of other reviewers, I liked the sections with tango music. One has to immerse oneself in the culture of the country to fully appreciate it - and enjoy the experience of learning spanish more.
good series for learning but not the best example
This series of simple short stories in different spanish dialects, is great for students of spanish, this one however is a bit shorter than the others, and i had to skip over the awful tango music which kept resurfacing its ugy head.

    Intriguing!
I found this book by following one of my favorite narrators, who did an awesome job interchanging her voice pitch along with various accents for this book. I would actually give this book a 4 1/2, only because as a Caribbean woman myself, I took slight offense to the seductive connotations placed on the main female characters. I was debating about getting this audiobook, I thought I would have been bored, or so appalled about the under aged relationship, but not that much to my surprise. The premise of the storyline is supposed to be fiction, yet it makes you wonder. There is also lots of informative non-fiction history as well. After I listened to the first part of the audiobook, it left me intrigued with Errol Flynn. I searched the internet to learn more about him. I remember dreaming about Flynn and the characters that night. I guess I also pitied Flynn for his deeds, in the book and in real life. I also wished the author give us more privy to the relationship between him and Ida.
In the middle of the audiobook, you begin to get a better feel of the main female characters and their relationship with others and their homeland Jamaica. This is where the storyline starts to revolve more around them. Also, I truly appreciate how the author wrote the story mainly in its timeline order, and not that back and forth jumping some authors do. In all, the entire story left me fulfilled, yet intriguingly haunted for some reason. I would love to sit down and chat with the author. Well done!
    A good book club story
What did you like best about The Pirate's Daughter? What did you like least?
The thing I liked most and least about this book is that there was a lot going on. It seemed like there were 3 books in this one book. I like this because it made for easy discussion for our book club. I don't like it because there was just too much jumping around. Instead of connecting small stories, write one well thought out one.
Would you be willing to try another book from Margaret Cezair-Thompson? Why or why not?
I would not, I didn't think this one looked good but kind of got roped into it via book club.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I always liked it when Ida went to visit her grandmother.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No, this would not make a good movie...

    amazing memoir
This translation from the French of A Secret by child psychiatrist Philippe Grimbert was made into a wonderful film. The memoir is even better. It continues to be a best-seller in France and is a great addition to second-generation literature.
    poor
Not very satisfied. The book is in poor condition. More wwite-ins than expected and pages are falling apart.
A classic to be reread in pleasure.
This little French book has a powerful tale. It is a story that you read once and come away feeling that you have read something of substance. It is a magical little book that gives the reader the power to discover more upon each read. The title does not translate well as it is not a story of THE SECRET but rather a story of a secret. A tiny difference, and there are a lot of little secrets in this book. I would not buy this addition as the footnotes are in German and the publisher does makes no mention of this in the sales tag. But do seek out the French version with English footnotes as it is well worth the read.

So, the stupid character, and bad story that's not worth being told kinda works...if you like the world full of celebs that are famous for doing very little and thinking their better than the rest of us.

"Burke demonstrates impressive range, sensitivity and polish in these smaller-scale gems." (Publisher's Weekly)

    WOW!
This story is a little more than 4 pages of first person narrative, told by a battle-hardened soldier in the only words he knows, but you'll spend more time considering it than you did reading it. It's that deep. Burke is a phenomenal writer. There is not a wasted word anywhere, yet you'll feel the subtropical heat, hear the gunfire, and the wrongs he conveys in this short fiction will haunt your dreams long after the last words. Read it as a lesson on how to write!

With Not Enough Indians, actor, writer, producer, and former Saturday Night Live cast member Harry Shearer joins the ranks of such comedian/authors as Steve Martin and Michael Palin with a brilliantly funny, whip-smart satire of greed, collusion, distrust, and betrayal in the halls of Washington and the casinos of Native America.

"[A] wickedly funny debut novel." (Booklist)
"An engaging political satire." (The Washington Post's Book World)
    Members Reviews:
    Very smart and funny
Great satire as I'd expect from Harry Shearer. Sure it gets a little silly at times, but always returns to intelligent fun.
Characters are all quirky individuals who we can laugh at and feel fondness for while knowing they are all heading for failure - if not disaster.
I recommend Not Enough Indians for listening to when you want light (but not childish) humor.
(Plus, it's relatively clean: very limited harsh language, nothing graphically described, just a little clean diaper humor).
    Fun listen, great characters
If you could sum up Not Enough Indians in three words, what would they be?
    Clever, witty, entertaining
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I think it'd make a fun radio play. I kept imaging the cast from A Mighty Wind filling in the orher voices.
Which character as performed by Harry Shearer was your favorite?
    Dr. Roger Gardner
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Join the tribe.
    Any additional comments?
Great fun from the voice of The Simpsons.
    A cute and edgy book
The book was a good listen. The characters held my interest. The plot was not tedious as might have happened. The idea that a town would resort to these measures to survive is hilarious. It made me smile and even occasionally laugh out loud...something I do not normally do. I liked the book and thought it was good but not great. I recommend it to others for satisfying reading.
