Non stop thrills!

Classic Cussler action. From beginning to end the story rips along with twists and turns keeping the suspense building. This was a story I didn't want to stop listening to and leaves me looking forward to the next edition.

The book started off great and I could imagine how the 'trials' of growing ...

The criteria provided by Amazon really didn't work for this book for me. The book started off great and I could imagine how the 'trials' of growing up would influence the prime character's (Sarah) life, but I didn't see it. The book was disjointed and sort of choppy for me and I really didn't like all that much; if I wasn't reading it for the book club, I would have skipped it. HOWEVER/DISCLAIMER I rarely like fiction, and only if it's a really good story, which this really wasn't.

For example... we see Sarah's sister with an arrogant and somewhat verbally abusive boyfriend, and the next thing you know, she's getting married.. but to some other guy we don't know. Sarah goes half-way around the world to hook up with an old friend hoping to start a romance and maybe marry him. The relationship soon ends; Sarah gets sick on the bus to the airport when she leaves; wallah, in the next chapter she has a four-year old. HUH?

I thought the book took off well and I was really disappointed at how dull it ended up.

A complex and interesting read

Hmmm. I am not entirely sure about this one--I'll start with what I liked, but this was a very complex book.

I liked the author's creativity, interesting voice, human insights, and lack of sentimentality. This is a White Girl Problems book, but it isn't especially self-indulgent, and it's got a lot of Americana-type elements that were really interesting. Anyone who likes literary books or wants intelligent, challenging chick lit should definitely look at this one.

I wasn't nutty about the way the timeline jumped around, and the structure of the chapters--which were more like New Yorker short stories--was a bit...not hard to follow, exactly, but sort of constraining. And while it was realistic, the nonlinear *feel* of the narrative and lack of resolution with the romances were a bit hard to take. It was hard watching the character get her heart broken over and over, and admittedly it wasn't quite what I expected from the blurb and the opening.

Loved This Book So Much!

This is the perfect book for someone to read who is interested in medicine, women's history and the Civil War. Robin Oliveira. I have read many book in both areas but not in the same book. The story is fictional but all the details about the history of medicine and status of women are true. I happened to be in a great of pain on the day I started it! I went to ER and was admitted for about four days. I am so glad that I took this book with me. I had discussions about the book with nurses, technicians and a social worker, all five of them now want to read this book.

The author is a master at writing, I never got bored or confused. I was glued to book in one particular scene when a young man's leg had to be amputated. The Mary Sutter character was so determined to learn, learn, learn. She had already mastered being a midwife and dreamed of being a surgeon.

I am so thrilled with this book that I am already searching out more books about women in the Civil War. I would not change a word in this book. I am definitely a fan of Robin Oliviera now.

Should be made into a movie

I envision a young Katherine Hepburn in the role of Mary. This is a perfect blend of history and fiction as viewed from the ground level of life and war. I literally could not stop reading. A five star rating, for me, means a character that is so real and identifiable, that will be remembered as an old friend.

Just a wow!

Love anything Civil War related and, as a nurse of forty plus years, found this book grounded in reality. The medical tragedies of the Civil War are often forgotten. Not in this novel.

loved it

There are many reason's I loved this book. First of all I loved the cover, second of all I loved the title. Thirdly I loved the writing from the very first word. I am an avid reader of historical fiction and I must say this is one of the best Civil War stories I've read in a long time.

Mary Sutter was not a typical women of her day. She wanted more than a secondary place among men. She wanted to be a surgeon and was ready to bear anything to have that happen. Because of the war, she was thrust into a role she did not fight against but savored. The novel gets into real people like Dorathea Dix and Abraham Lincoln but more importantly into the every day suffering of the common soldier. She is a brave, but flawed woman who puts her own needs aside. We feel for her, and hope she finally gets to keep her dreams and be with the man she loves.

I read some of the reviews and agreed with many---but on the negative tones of some I wonder if they ever read the whole book.

A novel So Profound...

As I finish this book, I marvel at how deeply it touched me. There are several sentences which I have written down so I can recollect them verbatim.

Sir Ian McKellen is superb as wise & aged Walter.

Sir Ian McKellen, a master as always. This would be worth listening to just to hear him act. But the story was a welcome window into the lives of this group of mentally challenged adults who are trying to find their place in this world.

Dreadful and way too long

How is it possible that a story can be so melodramatic without anything actually happening? The narrator's whiney voice and rolled "r"s and whistled "s"s only accentuate the overdone narrative, where everything is stated at least 6-7 times in different words, going on and on. I would have liked the book better, I think, if the narrator had been a bit more mature sounding - instead, the voices all sound like little kids, especially the women, the sorority girls who cry and moan about their "panties", most unattractive of words.

I've listened to "in a perfect world" several times and love it each time. "The Raising", however, seems to meander all over the place and is so boring that it's not even a good time-killer. The narrator is unpleasant to listen to, which creates a story impossible to finish. I gave it two stars, only because I never finished the last few hours and didn't want to trash something I can't say I experienced in full. Very disappointed, I'm sad to say.

Interesting, You Choose What Really Happened

The Raising involves a college sorority and the strange happenings on a college campus. You can decide what really happened but it's a interesting mystery with several possibilities.

Unfinished

I somewhat agree with the others when they complain about the author, her voice is annoying, and specifically the voice she did for Josie was awful. But this book is soooo long that after a few hrs I became numb to her weird lilts and odd accent.

The story itself feels so unfinished! I finished this book a few days ago, and it is still bothering me that it wasn't concluded... I don't need authors to always spell out the ending and hand it to me with a pretty pink bow... but in the case of this book she didn't even really end it. There is the huge mystery of the girl dying, or did she die? This is what the entire story is about, but it is never really answered.

Love the Book, hate the audio version

What did you like best about Elle s'appelait Sarah? What did you like least?

When i first read the book, i loved it, so i wanted to listen also to the audiobook one, and i liked it, too, but i didn't really appreciate that it left out A LOT of things and how it didn't go along with the book at all.

i'm mainly referring to the French Edition; i have no idea about the English Edition.

Narrator ruined this for me entirely

Would you try another book from Jodi Picoult and/or Kate Harper and Garrick Hagon ?

I simply could not listen to more than an hour of this audio book. Kate Harper's voice drones on in a way that is really not pleasant. Her 'male' voices are positively bizarre in their extremely low and slow tones - almost sounding distorted. Eventually I just closed the book down and couldn't go on.

Would you be willing to try another book from Jodi Picoult? Why or why not?

See above. Ruined everything for me. I had just finished The Story Teller and I was so excited for this one.

Disappointing Book

This book was well performed but overall disappointing. The story ends abruptly and I have to admit I felt a little cheated! I invested how many hours and at the end I felt there needed to be another chapter.

I don't recommend this book.

Good listen

I am a big fan and thought this book was very good if a little slow at first. Some of the passages describing the feelings of a new mother are extremely emotive and sensitively written and tug deep at the heart strings

A relationship dissected

This book is typical Jodi Picoult: intense introspection into relationships coupled with quite a bit of medical detail (the author has medical training and it shows!). Paige and Nicholas are the couple whose relationship the book follows in minuet detail from exultant first flush of love to dissolution and resentment. The differences in their social backgrounds, the pressures of his work as a heart surgeon and her struggles with post-natal depression all add to the turmoil of emotions that the author is so good at describing. Having two narrators works well and both are good at making their characters come to life. I enjoyed the book and have only knocked off a star as I find the excessive use of similes annoying as it levaes little for the listener's imagination.

Good but not great

I enjoyed it - I'm a big Jodi Picoult fan - however it was definitely not one of her best. The ending was particularly disappointing and there were odd inconsistencies with some of the characterisation. Having been through PND and very similar thought processes to Paige after the birth of my 1st child, I had been able to empathise with her in the beginning, but felt her character went a bit off course as the book progressed. If you're new to Picoult, try some of her other books first - My Sister's Keeper and Change of Heart are amazing.

Like the OCEANS movies...for your ears!!!

John Vorhaus's Radar Hoverlander is a lovable rogue who drags us into situations that are always fresh and always fun! And the story might slow down from scene to scene, but you would never call is "slow" (in any sense of the word).

The writing is a delight! Vorhaus clearly adores the English language, and uses it as masterfully as Douglas Adams or P. G. Wodehouse. In fact, the overall sense of the novel can best be compared to the Dirk Gently or Jeeves series by those respective authors: Fun characters doing fun (if not always well-advised, or even sane) things that keep the story tension winding ever tighter, until the inevitable climatic explosion!

I can't wait to hear the others! This book is marvelous fun!

Only wish the author had more titles

I loved this read, I mean listen. It was engaging all the way through and you really got to know and like the main characters. Too bad this author doesn't have more like it.

humorous engaging story

I have now read two of the radar hoverlander books and have loved both. Vorhaus' storytelling is engaging and fun without being overly intense.

Choppy

This was a hard book to get through. Although the author was obviously very well versed in facts about Yellowstone and the horrible fires of 1988, the melding of those facts among this work of fiction was not smooth. I found myself skipping over the more technical points to try to get back to what there was of the story.

Probably the most detrimental to the story was the protagonist, Clare Chance. Although understandably shaken by a recent personal and professional loss, her 'all over the place' behavior is unpleasant to read about. A love triangle that is meant to be scintillating, I'm sure, is more obnoxious than anything and I found myself hoping that adrenaline junky, Chris Deering, would go down in a helicopter accident and never be heard from again. The sudden and unbelievable tying up of his part of the story was contrived.

The building of the relationship between Clare and Steve Haywood was nice if somewhat trite given the extreme circumstances of them trying to do their respective jobs in an inferno.

One part of their story that really rankled was the consummation of their relationship while Clare's teenage (and extremely immature) daughter was missing in a fire ravaged area. I don't know of many mothers who would be content to take a roll in the sheets while their child's whereabouts and safety are unknown. Clare lost a ton of respect points in my book over that one.

This book was not terrible, but could have done with less fire facts, more straight forward story telling, and a reworking of the heroine's motives and behaviors.

Interesting mix of history, love story and drama. I liked Clare's character as a strong independent woman. Makes me wish my kids were interested in firefighting.

Knows about actual fire fighting!

I haven't read this but my husband has. He used to be a fire fighter and was surprised that the author actually knew some real things about fire fighting. I would like to get any others in the series but have to find them.

This was great. I enjoy living close to Yellowstone (Utah). I remember the great earthquake that made Earthquake Lake. It was such big news for months. This book let's us know that forest fires can be useful, but they are dangerous for those firefighters who must cope with them. I also remember the news about the firefighters who were trapped and did not survive. This brought back a lot of memories.

Worth your time at any price. This is a very well done write, good reference to what realy whent on. Show the hard and true side of things.
