Loved this book

What made the experience of listening to Thorn on the Rose the most enjoyable?

The fact that one could feel Jenny's emotions, her hard ache and her joys.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Thorn on the Rose?

When she and Jim got together in Sidney. One wished such happiness for her.

I loved that she truly loved her children no matter what happened to her.

I still like the story Joy Dettman is a really good writer, however I wanted a bit of laughter not the endless ho hum drama and Jenny to actually make a decision.

If I was reading the book I would probably skipped pages, I like Deidre Rubinstein as the narrator she makes the book come alive

Yes, however a TV mini series would work so much better

Why do the innocent suffer?

Good question. What I really want to know is, when are more people going to wake up and start reading John Scott? With a small collection of novels, and some equally fine poetry, Scott has stunned me and every other reader to whom I've recommended him. (His "What I Have Written" is my all-time-favourite Australian novel.) "The Architect" is ostensibly a tale about two architects: an ageing German with drawers full of unrealized masterpieces; and a young, successful Australian devotee. When the master meets the student and proposes a collaboration, things very quickly get very dark. Scott takes us into some terrifying but fascinating moral territory here and, like the novel's German protagonist, the author is utterly relentless. For me, this novel is essentially an interpretation of, and a reply to, the Book of Job which famously explores the issue of undeserved suffering. Scott's novel seems to suggest that man develop a morality which transcends that of God, i.e. a morality predicated on human mortality rather than on some notion of heavenly reward. Yet for all its intellectual weight, this is a very visual novel and a surprisingly easy read. It wears its learning lightly. There is a general absence of interiority, which probably accounts for the powerful sense of inexplicable evil it generates. It does its work quietly, delicately, through the use of settings and symbols and finely turned phrases. It's a novel that rewards re-reading.

Values have changed so much

I read and listened to this via KU. I had read this story before and was happy to listen to it again. The problem is that although it is advertised as "contemporary", it is very obviously dated. There is zero technology amongst other things. The h goes on a cruise to help her author aunt do some research. She makes friends with an elderly Greek woman, who turns out to be the grandmother of the H. The H is entranced by the h upon meeting her but eventually ends up propositioning her. It's quite funny to read how outraged the h is when it becomes clear that he is making her an offer to be his mistress. She is scandalised because she is not that type of woman and she will only accept marriage. I was amused because I remember those days very well and so much has changed in my lifetime.

Just too distant and complicated.

I always felt removed and distant from the story and characters. Regarding the characters, there were so many coming and going with intwined relations that if my concentration missed a little bit of the story, I was lost.

This was a plot heavy book, with such distasteful characters that I never connected.

Four hours into the book I was still wondering when it was going to get started. Sadly, I was unable to finish. This is not like a Jennifer Egan novel, who often has characters that can be tough to connect with, but is still beautifully written. It is just tough to connect with...

Unengaging characters and no plot

I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book and just can't seem to become engaged in the story at all. The characters are boring and flat and their lives nothing notable.

hotel vendome

It's was a love story like most of Danielle Steele books. I could see that in the middle of the story it was going to have a happy ending. You could figure out that the fathers love for his daugther would end up giving her the hotel, cause she was his whole life before he got married. I would suggest this as a summer reading novel by the beach. I have read more interesting books from Danielle Steele that could not put the book down. One book was malice and another wanderlust. Loved those books. Have all her novels.

Good Quick Read

Danielle Steel is one of my favorite authors. I have been a fan of hers and read many of her novels over the last 20 years. Suffice it to say, I am hooked. Many of my favorite books are written by her.

I recently finished her book, Friends Forever. Unfortunately, much of this current book did not engage me.

The story was about five friends who met in kindergarten and become immediate friends through their childhood, teen and college years. They dubbed themselves the Big 5, and became inseparable. The cast of characters included them, their parents, stepparents, and siblings.

What I did not enjoy about this book was the pacing. The book moved too fast, rapidly changing from scene to scene. It was quickly flipping back and forth through the characters through time as they advanced from kindergarten to college.

Much of the first half of the book was about the parents of the Big 5. This, in my opinion, made it very hard to get any true character development with many of the characters until the last 1/3 of the book. By this time, the story had quickly trimmed the cast down by moving rapidly through drug overdoses, suicide, and an accidental death, and funerals.

The overall message was about the risky lifeâs choices of this particular generation. The events in the story did affect the lives of the characters. Unfortunately, due to its fast pace, the reader did not have time to feel it. This book couldâve been so much more. And has a great story lineâWho didnât have the âBest Friendsâ in school.

I enjoyed the last third of the book when we finally were left with one main character and her struggles. The book slowed down enough to look inside a couple of the characterâs motives, feelings, and decisions that they faced.

As typically Danielle Steel novels go, it was an easy read. It had an ending that left you feeling good. Unfortunately, it did not capture my heart as some of her previous novels did.

Nice easy going book to read.. I enjoy all of her books. They are easy fat reading books that I download now on my iPad when I go some where . I would recommend this book for readers. They books will take about 7 to 8 hrs to read. Enjoy reading them.
