We like to think it's not there
This book kept me reading and reading until the end. It had a lull in the middle, but it kept a mostly up and down momentum until the end. Koontz has a message that I can identify with totally. Evil people really do exist in our world, truly ugly and monstrous evil that disguises itself as good and compassionate and beautiful. We like to think it's not there, but it is. The questions seem to be: How do we live our lives and move through them knowing monstrous evil exists? And: How do we live our lives in happy ignorance if on some level we know this? And lastly, How can we possibly move on through life on our own little islands of contentment if we know about the evil and cruelty around us and do nothing?
Another terrific thriller by Dean Koontz. Couldn't put it down. I may reread it.
This book was easy to rate. I have read a handful of Dean Koontz's books - Phantoms, Watchers, Strangers, Lightning and, possibly, Intensity. Except of Lightning, which was a bit disappointing, I loved them all. Though he's grouped in with Stephen King as a horror writer, I find that most of his books really fall under the category of thrillers. This one is no exception and I found it so thrilling that I could hardly put it down. The first chapter started in a barroom with some pretty stupid dialogue, and I said to myself, "What kind of book have I gotten into?" But then the stupidity ends and the thrills begin. I found the main character, Billy Wiles, to be incredibly smart and likewise, the plot. I won't give anything away, but I think most readers of suspense and thrillers, especially Dean Koontz lovers, will love this book.
    Old School Koontz
25 years ago, I was a huge Dean Koontz fan who couldn't read his work fast enough. Novels like Strangers, Watchers, Phantoms, Twilight Eyes, and Whispers were as good as thrillers got in my opinion. Then, sometime in the mid-90's, Koontz lost his appeal to me because the stories seemed to be less fleshed-out and too repetitive. I lost interest. That interest has returned with "Velocity".
This book is old-school Koontz. The protagonist is a normal Joe (like you and me) who gets thrust into a situation that he can neither control or figure out. Billy Wiles is that average guy who has had more than a few of life's curveballs thrown his way. Loyal to his comatose fiancé and a quiet friend to all in his job as bartender, Billy soon finds himself caught in a web of murder that he doesn't commit, but is in control of because of how he is being manipulated by an unknown person that he refers to as the "freak".
Koontz does a great job peeling back layers of Billy's character while making him both like-able and sympathetic. Nobody writes this type of character better than Koontz.
If you're a fan of desperate people caught in desperate situations, then "Velocity" will capture both your interest and imagination.

    Title: Ridley Road
    Author: Jo Bloom
    Narrator: Harriet Carmichael
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-11-14
    Publisher: Orion Publishing Group
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
When her beloved father dies, Vivien Epstein - a 22 year old hairdresser from Manchester - leaves her hometown for London in the hope of finding Jack Fox - a man she had a brief, but intense, love affair with some months ago.
All Vivien has to go is one letter Jack sent to her father, the address of a boarding house scribbled hastily on the back, and very soon her hopes of finding him are dashed. Resigned to this fact, she settles into London life, working in Oscar's - a hairdressing salon in Soho - and spending her nights at home with her motherly landlady. But still, she pines for Jack.
That is, until she becomes involved in the resurgence of anti-facism through the owner of Oscar's, Barb, and her husband Alan. When Alan takes her to a rally in Trafalgar Square and Vivien finally spots Jack amidst the crowds. At long last they lock eyes. And here their story begins again.

Interesting story, but changes in focus partway
When I first saw the cover of Ridley Road, I was hooked. I loved how the title looked like a street sign and the clearly 1960s photograph. So it sounded like a good choice to start my Audible membership with. Harriet Carmichael does a great job of narrating the story and she manages to make each character sound slightly different. The story, however, was a little jumpy for me. The content, covering the rise of fascist movement in London in 1960s, was great. I knew nothing about that period and I find that reading fiction based around actual events improves my knowledge greatly. But the story moves from being about Vivien, a hairdresser who moves to London after her father dies to look for a lost love to a political thriller. Poor old Vivien, cutting away happily, gets pushed into the corner while Jack, her lover takes over. Jack is a newspaper man who has gone undercover to investigate the fascist group that is planning to make a comeback. Theyre vandalising Jewish businesses and places of worship and printing out propaganda. As Jack gets more involved with Vivien (who is Jewish), he struggles to maintain his cover and composure. Will he make it out to file his story?
I think the first half of this book is dramatically different to the second part, which is why it didnt work so well for me. Viviens story is a romance/coming of age one, with her trying to find Jack in London and making new friends. Shes also trying to avoid the attentions of Stevie, a boy who thinks shes just great. I went from feeling sorry for Stevie with his slave like devotion to Vivien to just being annoyed when he was around. Hes rather immature with a knack for getting in trouble. Plus the way he followed Vivien and Jack around town was more stalker-ish than cute. When Jack makes his reappearance, things move to being from his point of view. We hear more about the things hes involved and the danger hes facing. This part had more of a thriller feel and less of the charm of Viviens story. I think if Id been more prepared that the story was going to change tone dramatically, I would have enjoyed things more.
As Vivien reappears in what is now Jacks story, its obvious that this young lady from Manchester has grown up. Gone is her naivety, replaced with a composure and grace to help the man she loves. Shes also calm in the face of a radical group trying to destroy her faith. Jack too undergoes a revelation as tensions between the fascists and anti-fascists heat up.

    Title: River Season
    Author: Jim Black
    Narrator: Nathan Landrum
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-04-14
    Publisher: Recorded Books
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Debut author Jim Black's semiautobiographical tale won rave reviews and favorable comparisons to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
For young Jim, the summer of 1968 sparkles with the promise of baseball and pretty girls. But he must reevaluate his priorities when he befriends Sam, an older African-American who shares his love of fishing. Soon Jim realizes there is more to Sam than he ever imagined, and that life's most valuable lessons are often the most painful.
    Members Reviews:
"The face of the water, in time, became a wonderful book. . ."
Mark Twain wrote that. Jim Black, in the tradition of great American writers, has once again demonstrated it. His Little Wichita River is not the Mississippi, but it is the River Eternal, upon whose surface gifted dreamers such as Black can gaze, and read the full tide of young men's hopes and ardor and grief and redemption as they flicker and vanish on the fast-moving current.
It takes a brave and gifted writer to compose a novel whose theme is not cynicism or darkness, but tenderness, made noble by the steadfast embrace of life, despite all its sorrows. And to elevate this theme beyond sentimentality into literature. Jim Black belongs in that company.
    The Summer of All Summers
River Season is a very fun, sentimental, nostalgic read. It held me captive from the first page to the last. The author, Jim Black, uses a writing style that is very readable, flowing easily from one chapter to the next. I think this novel will appeal to all readers from age ten to one hundred but also to individuals who do not identify themselves as readers. The story setting is a small town in the mid sixties, and the plot revolves around Jim at thirteen as he experiences friendship, love, loss and other lessons of life. This reader experienced emotions from laughing out loud to crying out loud. River Season brings back fond memories of growing up in a tight community with very unique, memorable and sometimes eccentric characters. I highly recommend this book. This book is also recommended for high school english students.
    Excellent book
This was a great story, well-written. I hope Mr. Black writes more books!
    River season the book
His is a really fantastic book. I reccommend that everybody read it at least once. You'll cry though. I promise.
    Small Town America
River Season is a snapshot of growing up in Small Town America that keeps you captured from page 1. It is heart warming and full of the kind of teenage pranks that kept small town kids entertained in the 1970's. I thought it was better than Stand By Me and highly recommend author Jim Black's books.
