Too short to develop characters.
A very short but sweet story. The character development left me wanting more and it seemed more like a "teaser" than an actual full story. These characters could progress into something much more in depth very easily, turning this short story into a novel. The story moved along nicely, however it seemed slightly "convenient" and very much obvious in which directions it was turning. The author was trying to convey a particular message, and good or bad, the means was entirely about that end. This story should have either been shortened and included less or longer to include much more.

Good short story
I enjoyed "Midday Dreams" but I definitely felt it was too short and I was longing for a conclusion to the story. The story is centered around Izabel and her family. They are living in poverty in Portugal and Izabel longs to leave the island with her sister and travel to the United States. Justino, her husband is very adament about staying on the island as their families have for years and takes a dangerous whaling job to try and earn money. Izabel is angry with him and seeks out her brother Eduardo who is also leaving the island with an American named William. Things are discovered about her brother that she does not agree with and she quickly condemns him. I will not spoil anymore of the story but it shows us that even though we may not agree with our families choices, sometimes our judgement/prejudices are too quick and it may take a cooling down period to understand the reasoning but we should always try and walk a mile in someone elses shoes. I liked the book but I was definitely left wanting more development to the characters and to the storyline. I hope that Cipriani writes again and finishes this story because I would love to know the fate of Izabel and her family. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Promising, and yet...
This story is like a soft chocolate that melts in your mouth. Once it's gone, you wish it had lasted a little longer. Not entirely a bad thing.
The events of the story feel a bit smooshed together and realizations happen quickly, one after another. However, the conditions of the island are chronic and have led to an uneasiness in the adult characters, so what we are witnessing is an eruption after a sustained build up. The characters are forced to make life changing decisions for survival through the emotional confusion and are likewise impacted by a moral dilemma. Ultimately, it's about keeping faith, trusting in the unseen, and listening with the heart.
A nice little story that could have been more, but still has some power.

Enjoyable Short Story
The author, Belo Cipriani, did a great job writing a story about the difficult task of families facing adversity.
