Booknapped! More than Just a Great Read

You know when you have a hard time pulling yourself away from a book in order to get stuff done? I call that being booknapped, and any book that does that to me deserves five stars.

Chris Wesley's The Gospel of Wolves is a case in point.

Chris has created a rich world with complex characters, and the deeper I got into the book, the richer the world became. Now I'm hooked and can't wait for the next column to come out!

At first I was a bit thrown by the changing voice--the book follows several different characters, and while most of it is written in third person, with an omniscient narrator, one character tells his own story in the first person voice. Once I realized this pattern, it made sense--it's the author's way of aiming a spotlight on this character.

My only complaint about The Gospel of Wolves is that I think it would have benefitted from a professional editor. I found myself rewriting sentences in my head in a few places, to correct punctuation or make what felt to me like a more elegant sentence structure.

Any frustrations you might feel due to these kinds of issues, though, are more than made up for by the story, the characters, the world the author draws.

Like I said, I am eagerly awaiting the next volume!

And in the meantime, Mr. Wesley has expanded the world of the story beyond the pages of the book! Turns out he's not just a talented author; he's a real Remaissance man, who has used his skills in music, photography, poetry and web technologies to create additional content that complements the book, and reveals more about the characters and their stories, without in any way spoiling or detracting from the book.

The man is some kind of genius!

Check it out--The Gospel of Wolves is not only a great read, it's the doorway into a much larger world than you'd ever guess! Well worth it.

Chris Wesley is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. His style of writing is engaging and unpredictable. It is like a Tarantino movie on steroids. If you put it down to go take a pee break, you might get lost. Super engaging. In Gospel Of Wolves Wesley pulls you into the characters and their worlds. Development of the story and creation of a bond with their plight is uncanny. There is nothing black and white about his landscape creation. It is all very vivid. Eloquent and modern is hard to find now a days. Wesley manages to pack in a million pages of content into about 200 without anything seeming rushed or any corners cut. I will leave no spoilers here... Just get this book. And if you don't like it, I WILL pay you for your copy!

Hard subject to read about, but easily drawn into the story.

Hard subject matter, but easy to get pulled in to the characters.

Carter Brookes knows abuse. He's lived it his whole life under the hands of his father. He despises him and his family for the abuse they try to hide from the world.

Tawney Owens is a strong girl from the wrong side of the tracks, but Carter falls for her.

This book follows their lives over a course of ten years. They meet as teenagers in high school.

Carter wants his life to be different, because he wants to be nothing like his father.

Tawney was raised by an absent father and a drug addicted mother, so her strength came all on her own.

This is a short story that will have a continuation of the story with, The Finish, that comes out in 2014.

This well written story is about domestic violence. Jade plans to donate money to this cause.

Pleasantly surprised!

Well, well Jade Eby. You caught me a little off guard here! I really wasn't sure that I'd like this. The title kind of threw me off initially, but the summary sounded interesting so I thought I'd give it a read. I was surprised to be captivated by this story right away.

This book takes a look at the dysfunctional dynamic of an abusive relationship. We meet Carter as a teen from an abusive household who despises his father (the abuser). He falls for Tawny, a tough as nails pretty girl from the wrong side of the tracks. This story follows their relationship over the course of 10 years, as we watch to see if it's possible to break the cycle of abuse. It's hard to explain how I felt about this book without spoilers, so I'll just say that this was a well written, easy to read short story with a cliffhanger ending... I will be interested to see how things turn out for Carter and Tawny!

Great way to start The Finish

This is a good way to start off her series with this companion novel.

Carter Brooks gets abused by his father. He meets Tawny Owens and falls in love with her.

Years passed, they're married and he beats her. Only when she deserves it and not like his father who does it for fun.

Domestic abuse to a hard subject for anyone.

And I am not excusing what he did but I understand it? The only reason Carter is beating on Tawny is because that's how he is raised!

You're children follow in your footsteps. That's all Carter knows so why wouldn't he do that same thing?

I can't wait for The Finish and see what happens with Tawny and Carter.

The Finish will be in Tawny's POV and come out early 2014.

Whiskey and a Gun

This is the story of the making of an abusive husband, from the husbandâs point-of-view. This takes a tough topic like domestic abuse and handles it in such a way that even if you are disgusted by the things he does, in some sick and twisted way you feel you can understand how he got to that pointâthe point of no return. This story in no way glamorizes abuse, but it doesnât shrink from the complexities of such a messed up relationship.

Jobs For Angels

This was a good book, very predictable, but good. The book kept my attention, but I wasn't disappointed when it was over. I like it, but I didn't love it. I would love to try more from this author tho. And the narrator did a pretty good job of setting the tone for all the situations and characters in the book. Worth a listen!

Jane has got better at writing about her characters as well as developing a good story line

For me this is where the book lets itself down. To me it's as though the author either ran out of time for a publishing deadline or even worse just simply ran out of ideas of how best to end the story.

What disappointed you about The Company of Ghosts?

Managed the first 28mins 33secs but it just didn't enthral me or inspire me to listen further

What was most disappointing about Andrew Jamess story?

The whole premise for the time it is set in. It didn't gel comfortably. The synopsis interested me but the first 28mins failed to hold my curiosity enough to make me want to care about the characters & potential events.

Did Kris Dyer do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

He was able to make sufficient voice characterisations for his reading to have been enjoyable but for the fact that I was not willing to bother with the storyline.

Sooooooo much promise, I can't wait to find out what happens next. Andrew James has hit on something that is ripe with possibilities and I will be watching with keen interest in where this goes next.

A good read

This is a story about reincarnation with an evolving mystery. Emily Vinson lost her mother at age two and was raised by a disinterested father, leaving a gnawing void in her life. The story begins with 82-year-old Emily with an overwhelming desire to learn about her mother who she has only imagined memories through old photographs. She contacts a hypnotist, Glen Wiley, and with his assistance she begins her journey into the past.

Steve Lindahl takes the reader on a fascinating and mystical exploration not only into Emily's past with her mother, but other past lives she led as far back as the 19th century. Motherless Soul keeps the readers interest as the plot has twists and turns and interesting characters along the way.

A good read that leaves you wondering about the many levels of time, especially the possibility of the time's circularity. Dennis McKay author of Fallow's Field and Once Upon Wisconsin.

As someone who believes in reincarnation I thought I would enjoy this book but I found it totally unbelievable and bailed about a third of the way through.

Relationships, past and present come alive

Motherless Soul uses an original approach to discuss many elements of life--relationships, past experiences, fate, and the times in which we live. I never thought about possible reincarnation paring us with the same souls time and time over, but I recently learned this was one of the beliefs of Edgar Casey. It was an engaging read and the characters really come alive. Even if you have no belief in reincarnation, the effect of early events on one's life is so critical and the need to break the cycle is essential.

I enjoyed this book and it made me think, both good things. I believe it also helped me to become more understanding of motivations of those around us.

Breaking The Cycle

This is a profound work about the cyclic nature of pain and one woman's desire to confront it and move on.

The story begins with Emily's search to demystify the mother she never knew, the figure whom she believes to have hold the secret that will break a cycle of discontent. Where this leads her is on a journey of self-discovery that begins with a trip to a hypnotist and introduces Emily to generations past.
