    Gripping
Enjoyed from start to finish, well written keeping you gripped throughout. Will look out for this author's books in future.
    Fantastic Original Book
I really enjoyed this book it was totally original. The premise of the story was intriguing, what makes an ordinary British woman fall in love with an American murderer on death row? The way in which this question was dealt with had me gripped from page one and I could barely stop until it was finished. The narration was really good and Christina really conveyed Samantha. The ending was excellent tense and nerve shattering with a final twist. My only criticism would be that I would have liked the portrait of Samantha to have been drawn out a bit more. The press described her in a certain way, but this was never confirmed by Amy Lloyd in her narrative and I felt that I really wanted to know what she actually looked like and if this had any bearing on her actions. Overall a brilliant book.
    gripping but cold
a good story but hard to connect with the characters, so didn't feel that invested in what happened to anyone. some interesting themes around celebrity, social media and politics intriduced but not adequately explored. still an enjoyable listen though.
    Implodes With The Central Character
An interesting idea for sure but never really quite executes against it. When you base a book around a very weak central character you are always taking a risk. Readers, at least those like myself, need to be able to identify with them in some way but Sam just fell flat in almost every way and I simply couldn't identify with her. I only made it halfway through but by then I just couldn't feel anything about her. She was weak in a two dimensional way which brought the whole thing crashing down.
Christina Cole and Lorelei King did a decent job of the narration and the book is well-structured for two narrators but even that doesn't lift this beyond the mundane.

A simple case of blackmail gets lethally complicated when "Nameless" exposes a nasty scam that involves junior accounts executive Jay Cohalan, his unhappy wife, and a mistress with a serious drug problem. It's the kind of case Nameless likes, because bleeders - the blackmailers, extortionists, small-time grifters, and other opportunists who prey on the weak and gullible - sit near the top of his most-worthless-human-beings list. But soon Nameless finds his client shot dead in the middle of a four-poster bed and only by a hair's breadth escapes a similar fate. During a relentless hunt for his unknown assailant in San Francisco's shadowy underworld, he encounters bleeders of every ilk and, in a climax as powerful as it is unexpected, finally confronts his own demons.

only 4 stars might be a little hard on this great book
This is a very fine detective novel. It's a bit of a throw back in that it is in essence an old time gumshoe private eye tracking down an elusive quarry. The manner in which Pronzini unfolds his plot here is unexpected in a very satisfying way, while at the same time sophisticated in its delivery. The author that comes to mind most similar in style to this book is Lawrence Block and his Matthew Scudder series before it started to fall apart. Both Pronzini and Block have the gift of being able to create a scenario that is bigger in scope than your run of the mill end of the world contemporary thriller. These authors do this while presenting the reader with a simple elegant story. Bleeders is very satisfying indeed.
What amazes me most about Bleeders is that this is the twenty-something book in the series. It is obvious that Pronzini has complete control of his medium here. He is not selling you a half-hearted effort based on past success. I don't think that I have picked up one of his nameless detective novels before. I plan on reading them all now. Unlike every other author of a mystery series I have yet to come across one that has sustained such a firm grasp on excellence as Pronzini has with Bleeders. Maybe you could say that about Ed McBain and his 87th precinct books. Most authors fall into predictable story lines that would pale in comparison to the earlier work. If Pronzini has fallen from his high horse, if even a little, his first nameless detective novels must be something else.
Hey, pick up this book, you will enjoy it.
    Pronzini is a master!
Whether you're a veteran reader of P.I. novels or a neophyte who doesn't know his Hammett from his Chandler, you'll love the latest in Pronzini's "Nameless" series. This writer is a master, a benchmark against whom all the others compare themselves. A craftsman of both plot and language, Pronzini delivers each and every time. And in this way, he's that rarest of things: the sure bet. He knows how to deliver. He doesn't waste a detail or sling an extra word. "Bleeders" shows him at the pinnacle of his powers. Not only is it a fine mystery, thoroughly entertaining and beautifully paced, but his protagonist is entirely real. Nameless has aged and in this outing, he's feeling the weight of his cumulative history, the burden of all the pain and tragedy he's participated in over the course of 20+ books.

    Publisher's Summary:
Ran McGhie's world has been turned upside down. A young, lonely and frustrated writer, and suffering from mental health problems, he discovers that his long-dead mother was related to one of Glasgow's oldest merchant families.
Not only that, but Ran has inherited Newton Hall, a vast mansion that belonged to his great-uncle, who appears to have been watching from afar as his estranged great-nephew has grown up. Entering his newfound home, he finds that Great-Uncle Fitzpatrick has turned it into a temple to the written word - the perfect place for poet Ran. But everything is not as it seems. As he explores the Hall's endless corridors, Ran's grasp on reality appears to be loosening. And then he comes across an ancient lift; and in that lift a mirror. And in the mirror...the reflection of a woman....
A terrifying psychological thriller with more than a hint of the Gothic, House of Spines is a love letter to the power of books and an exploration of how lust and betrayal can be deadly.
    Members Reviews:
A Fine Cocktail of Contemporary & Gothic Twists
In House of spines Michael Malone achieves a heady mix of contemporary and more traditional Gothic themes. Ranald McGee is a struggling young writer with a dark and troubled past. He carries with him enormous mental baggage as a result and even everyday life can be a challenge to him. Only medication can keep him on an even keel now. A death in a family he doesnt know existed then pitches him into a complex inheritance with yes, you guessed it, a creepy old house with a sinister past at the heart of it. What follows is then a complete mind funk of events as Ran struggles to separate what might be real from whats supernatural from what is merely a product of his over-heated brain.
I enjoyed the characters and they were voiced very well by David Elliot who is a new narrator to me, in fact this appears to be his Audible debut. Be warned Im a sucker for a Celtic accent but Id certainly be happy to listen to more from him.
I think if a mix of family drama, psychological thriller, Gothic supernatural and even a light touch of romance is up your street then this is a book to have on your list. The only caution Id make is that if you are looking for a book to deliver just one of those things this might frustrate as it does mix the genres to an extent.
    Captivating read
Would you listen to House of Spines again? Why?
Yes I would because the narration was excellent and the story was gripping
What other book might you compare House of Spines to, and why?
I would have to compare it to several books and yet none. It is a gentle mix of gothic supernatural tales set in a victorian mansion but included psychological and thriller elements too. House on the Hill meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
What about David Elliots performance did you like?
    Loved his accent, his pace.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
A man with a troubled past finds refuge-or does he?
    Any additional comments?
This book ticked all of the boxes for me. I love supernatural stories and equally love stories about someone changing their life, moving to a new place etc. It had some things to say about mental illness and loneliness too. I loved it. On a personal note it is really a local story for me as a Glaswegian who used to live in Bearsden, although it was perhaps a Bearsden from thirty years ago when it was more like a village.

    A mixed bag
I found the story less suspenseful than it should have been - seemed a little directionless at times. The social context was interesting and well conveyed. The reader was good, but the clear sense of character he conveyed in the first person sections, made the switch to third person in the same voice confusing. The ending was very clunky.
    Great book
I really enjoyed this book. Some light hearted moments on what is a very serious subject.
    Engaging narrator and good characters.

    Serious Story Sprinkled with Humor
It was my first Lisa Scottoline book and I loved the way she told the serious story with humor. I enjoyed her so much I have downloaded some of her other books. I would recommend this book.
Don't let the formatting get you on this one.
I agree with a previous review. The book is good--very good, but whoever formatted it for Kindle screwed it up. When I first opened it, it read like a bunch of first chapters from other books. It was the poor formatting that did it. I finally figured out the problem and was able to overcome it, but not before I call Ms. Scottoline a few very undeserved names. Whoever at her publishing house formatted this book for Kindle, they did a poor job. On the other hand, Ms. Scottoline did a wonderful job of writing it--as usual.
Sorry for my former one-star review.
What to say? I'm hooked on the series.
What to say? I'm hooked on the series.
    More than usual
Loving the Rosato series got me reading COURTING TROUBLE but Anne Murphy took me beyond the usual "good" to terrific!!
    Oh the possibilities
I am puzzled by this novel. We have a good character, a nice plot twist, a great setting...but. Anne Murphy, bright and beautiful young lawyer, recently moved to Philadelphia from the west coast is presumed victim of a homicide, and like Mark Twain, reports of her demise are premature. The plot revolves around an axis of her resurrected self and law firm partners attempting to bag the murderer. While this goes on, she learns a bit about the art of personal relationships. That's a valuable character twist. And there is a plot "sting." It's fun. Still, the author can be disappointing. The use of upscale brand labels in the first few chapters comes close to today's movies. And there is just a bit too much self doubt in the partners of her well educated, Philadelphia, female law firm's partners. I guess the disappointment is that Anne is almost a "mensch." Oh, well. I think this author might really have it. I'll read another one. But please no more attack of the brand names.

    Members Reviews:
    Somewhat disappointing
The narration wasn't that good, sometimes confusing as to where one character finished and another started - the full stop at the end of a sentence is there for a reason. Also I found the consistent mispronunciation of certain words annoying. Also the story in itself was somewhat marred, in my opinion anyway, by quite graphic sex scenarios - really didn't add anything to the story.
    Love Africa
Thanks Tony and Simone. I had the pleasure of listening while driving from Adelaide to Brisbane. Another marvellous story, Tony, and it was great to hear all those African voices, and mention of those places I've been lucky enough to visit.

    Publisher's Summary:
Southern fables usually go the other way around. A white woman is killed or harmed in some way, real or imagined, and then, like the moon follows the sun, a black man ends up dead.
But when it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules - a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger working the backwoods towns of Highway 59, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about his home state, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home.
So when allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he is drawn to a case in the small town of Lark, where two dead bodies washed up in the bayou. First a black lawyer from Chicago and then, three days later, a local white woman, and it's stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment. Darren must solve the crimes - and save himself in the process - before Lark's long-simmering racial fault lines erupt.
    Members Reviews:
Evocative, lyrical character study about race and rural Texas
Attica Lockeâs BLUEBIRD, BLUEBIRD is a lyrical, insightful look at race relations in rural Lark, Texas. The novel is being marketed as a thriller and a murder mystery, but itâs really much more a character study about family and relationships and intolerance. The protagonist is Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger under suspension for his possible role in the murder of a white drug dealer with ties to the Aryan Brotherhood. But when two bodies â a black lawyer from Chicago and a white local girl â turn up in the little town of Lark, Darren is asked to look into things â at first unofficially, and then with his Texas Rangerâs badge. And the more he investigates, the more convoluted things become. Both bodies were found in the bayou behind a little café owned by 69-year-old Geneva Sweet, a black woman whose husband and son had also been murdered in Lark. Four dead people in a little town with a population under two hundred, and all four were somehow connected to Geneva.
There are elements of this novel that reminded me of John Grishamâs A TIME TO KILL, although Lockeâs story is less about the murders (or the mystery) than it is about the characters. Darren was born and raised in Texas, and he resents the stateâs image as the home of white supremacists and racist rednecks. He is proud of his position as a Texas Ranger, and prouder still of his efforts to protect disenfranchised black Texans and fight the Aryan Brotherhood. He has a wife who wishes heâd turn in his badge and go back to law school, and heâs torn between his love for her and his passionate commitment to justice. He was raised by two uncles, one (a police officer) believing that âthe law would save us by protecting us,â and the other (a lawyer) believing that âthe law is a lie black folks need protection from.â When Darren arrives in Lark, his assumption is that the two murders are both connected and racially motivated. And when he runs up against an uncooperative white sheriff and a rich white local who owns most of the town, the truth gets harder to unravel. It quickly becomes clear that âjustice was messier than [he] realized when heâd first pinned a badge to his chest.â
Another fascinating character is Geneva Sweet, who owns the only café in town where black people can feel comfortable eating.

Yes, his office was in Oxfordshire, and his dig site was in Spain, a trip of 1,400 miles across three countries and two bodies of water. Still, it should have been simple. That is, until everything went wrong.
    Members Reviews:
Three Fantastic Books in One Set!
I loved J. J. DiBenedetto's Dream Series, but I think I like the Jane Barnaby series even more. All three books are really good, and the character of Jane is well-written and fun to read. In Finders Keepers, Jane is entrusted by her mentor, an archaeologist, to take his brand new vehicle and a box of what was supposed to be pottery shards deliver them safely into his hands. What happens next is an exciting adventure across two countries where she's chased by people who want the box. She doesn't know who to trust, and she has to rely on her instincts, which, at times, are flawed. In Loser's weepers, Jane is once again drawn into an adventure when her zany friend from college suddenly reappears - now a uncharacteristically subdued engaged young woman who seems to be completely under the control of her fiancé. Jane's concern is heightened when her friend pulls a disappearing act and Jane finds evidence she may be involved with Nazi artifacts. The story is exciting to the end, and Jane's sometimes impulsive character does not disappoint as she more than once gets herself in situations that are hard to get out of. Finally, in Her Brother's Keeper, Jane's twin brother is arrested for stealing jewels in a foreign country. Jane, in the company of her soon-to-be-step-mother and a new, but annoying new acquaintance, Sheryl, set off to try to find the actual culprit - the woman flirting with her shy, introverted brother the night before. Just as Jane has sights on the woman, a nefarious character from her past shows up, causing Jane to wonder just who's behind the heist.
A fun set of adventures with a plucky heroine
Finders Keepers, the first book in this box set, is a cute adventure featuring a plucky young female heroine, a stolen treasure, a hot Irish rogue, and a reluctant Englishman. The story is lots of fun and the Audible version is nicely narrated.
I haven't had a chance to read to the rest of the books yet, but I will review them when I do.
