Jen, Andrew, Lilah, Natalie and Dan were inseparable at university, but in the last seventeen years they have hardly seen each other. Until Jen invites them all to her house in the French Alps, where they once spent a golden summer before tragedy tore them apart.
When a snowstorm descends, they find themselves trapped and forced to confront their unresolved issues and broken friendships. And Jen realises that perhaps some wounds can never be healed....

"An emotional reada fascinating meditation on change and the importance of taking responsibility for one's happiness" (Daily Mail on One Minute to Midnight)

Not bad
Overall I enjoyed this book although it dragged in places and much of the 'past' story could have been culled. Some of the characters weren't necessarily very pleasant but their actions were understandable as you got to know their past and their motivations.
Two Stars
not my cup of tea
A slow burner
This was a hard book for me to rate: it was better than a 3 star read but not quite up to 4 stars. It's the story of a group of friends who have been close since their late teens. Conor and Jen are an item, as are Andrew and Lilah. Natalie is Lilah's best friend and Dan is the 6th member of the group.
One summer when they are all 24, they are staying together at a house in the French Alps. There is an accident and Conor is killed. This fractures the group: Jen loses contact with them all and there are divisions among the others. 16 years later, Jen gets in contact with them all and invites them to a reunion at the same house in France. There, long buried secrets and resentments will gradually emerge.
I found the first 100 pages of this book to be pretty slow going. The next 100 were better and it kept improving from there as I got more invested in the characters and the connections between them all became apparent. I found my allegiances shifting: characters that I initially disliked became more likable and vice versa. The story is told in part with old letters and emails between the characters to fill out gaps in the story. (Pay attention to the dates of these as they jump around in time). I couldn't quite decide if this was a clever technique or a cop out by the author. It's the kind of book you have to decide you're going to stick with, but if you do it pays off by the end.
The author, incidentally, is Paula Hawkins, who found subsequent fame with "The Girl on the Train". This was her earlier pen name under which she wrote four books.
