Fun premise and a great twist towards the end, but main character Roxy lacks depth

Roxy Squires, better known as "Foxy Roxy", hasn't had a job in the entertainment industry for a while - though not for lack of trying! She makes sure to keep her tan orange, her clothes as minimal as possible and her teeth unnaturally white, so she looks her utter best when the next presenting gig comes along. In the main time she blags herself into the VIP areas of the hottest clubs so she can leave through the not-so-secret back exit and pose for the paparazzi. There is little Roxy isn't willing to do to reclaim her celebrity status.

Woody is a former pop star and heartthrob who abruptly disappeared from the scene when he was at the height of his fame. Imagine Roxie's surprise when she finds out that "The Woodeniser" nowadays works as a window cleaner in her otherwise rather dull village of Lavender Heath. The former teen idol still looks very appealing to the eyes and despite his "civilian" job Roxy fancies him madly, so she eagerly replies to his invitation to drop by his house.

While she assumed this to be a date he actually thinks she's the perfect candidate to join his group of celebrity has-beens, which also includes a soap actor desperate to show his talents in a rom com, a child prodigy, and a weatherman who never managed to actually predict the weather. Each one of them has left the spot light for one reason or another and while they not all desperately want to get back in it, they do find it difficult to adjust to their current lives. The meet-ups are an opportunity for them to vent their frustrations and along the way unlikely friendships are formed.

I loved the supporting characters we slowly got to know through these meetings; Holly, Cressida, Simon, Sue and Terrence are brilliantly unique and I really wanted to learn more about them. Even Austin and Chelle started to grow on me towards the end.

It was a shame that the one person the book was heavily focussed on was the one that got on my nerves for the majority of it. Roxy is superficial, egocentric and quite frankly annoying.

This ranks as one of the most enjoyable and moving listens I have thus far experienced.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Signature of All Things?

The author has managed to create a truly believable moment of wonder and revelation around the unlikely subject of bryology (the study of mosses).

What does Juliet Stevenson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

A mellifluous and pitch perfect reading of the book- I could have listened to her voice for days. Unfortunately the 'voice in my head' whilst reading just doesn't sound that good!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

In one way yes, but I also enjoyed going away to savour moments before returning to the story.

A rare book indeed - beautifully drawn characters which drive the story on and involve the emotions of the reader - at the same time addressing a period of our history in which science and the opening up of the world to discovery was at a particular peak.

One of the best, I really enjoyed the exploration of peoples characters.

I think it has to be Alma, she was the main character after she arrived in the story. She had amazing tenacity and the mind of a scientist, she was self disciplined and pragmatic.

Love. Blood. And Money.

"Monster" is a brutal, sad, funny and bloody story about a young mother juggling the mess of her life. She has a husband who goes to work drunk and gets in bar fights. She has a teenage daughter from another marriage who insists on fighting her on everything. She has two young children that need to be raised better than her first-born. She has an abusive ex-husband who at any moment may reappear and disrupt chaos with more chaos. It's nearing the end of the month and they're short on money. Next thing you know, the family dog goes missing.

The narrator tries to keep herself together even as her life unravels. The author, Bridget Clerkin, takes the story to places that make you want to shield your eyes, but she does so with such grace and control and talent that eventually you can only read on in awe. Her writing is beautiful. You find yourself falling for each character and then begging them not to break your heart (they will, of course). The way these characters talk is as real as anything I have read in a long time. They sound like us, which only makes "Monster" more frightening. You hope for the best, but, if you're anything like the narrator, you know to expect the worst. And still, when you learn of those awful things, their awfulness always surprises you. You didn't think it could get any worse than the worst case scenario.

Thankfully, at the helm is a writer with an astonishing imagination.

great until last paragraph

I agree with another review who stated that it was a great quick read until the last paragraph - author should have cut that or added more - or I could see how it related and ok I don't want to spoiler it; if I think down and deep it makes sense but for a dramatic finish the last paragraph is useless - but it was a good read I would read more from this author - their is really no plot but for such a short story I got a great vibe of what was going on in the world of this family- good visual and I enjoyed it, the story itself. I'm more of a lengthy book lover however, singles are not my thing except for Until You Bleed if anyone wants to read a 5 star single take a peek at that; though it's entirely different being a true story I still recommend....

and back to this story - actually maybe the author should have made it a little longer; the writing was tight just ended poorly.

Short, creepy and good

I remember reading a few years back about the "Montauk Monster" washing up on a Long Island shore. It had never been revealed of what kind of animal it had been but it had made for a very interesting news article. I am wondering if Ms. Clerkin had taken that article and weaved-out an actual story from it.

An old favourite

A simple story (obviously for a normal James Patterson style twist) but a real feel good book that always lifts my mood.

An Alternative 'Notebook'

After my whirl with a very scary audiobook I needed a little schmaltzy comfort.

Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas was the audiobook equivalent of Ben and Jerry's in your pyjamas.

It was therapeutic, easy to listen to, enjoyable, well narrated.

The characters are so likeable and so well enacted but Becky Baker. My only frustration is the music that the producers have snuck in at particularly critical points. For me it took away from the audiobook rather than adding to it as the music sounded dated (and it was a step too far into the schmaltzy!)

This was a perfect 'weekender' audiobook. Very enjoyable.

Mixed feelings

I liked the book on the whole and it's probably worth 3.5 stars. If you've read the whole series then you can't not read this one. I suppose what I most disliked is how the h was so badly treated originally by the H and by her own family. It took a long time for the H to see her for who she really is but then when he does, he comes through for her in an amazing way.

This is the book that ties all the stories together and gives us more insight into the father of Sev, Lazz, Marco and Niccolo. He is the Dante who never married his inferno mate and whose life ended up a mess. He is also the father of the H in this book as he had had a one night stand with the H's mother and it resulted in the birth of the H and his twin sister. The H's mother was in fact the H's father's inferno mate but he chose not to marry her, with disastrous results for all his children.

I liked knowing all the background details. The only untold story is the H's twin sister's, other wise the author told us every one of the Dantes' stories. It was an entertaining series with a romantic premise.

a great hit

Gabe was a very mistrustful person. He believed the worst of Kat. When Kat came back into his life offering a deal of engagement to appease her grandmother in exchange for the necklace that belonged to his mother. He couldn't resist the chance to get back his mothers necklace, even at the expense of being engaged to a woman he has learned to despise for 5 years. Gabe begins to rethink his opinion of Kat and rethink their fake engagement, especially after he involves the Dante's and allows them to become a part of his life. He realizes what a true family is and his cold demeanor begins to melt.

I loved this story, same as all the Dante books. I can't wait for Gabe's twin, Lucia's story. I hope the stories continue with Primo's and Nonna's great grandchildren. I'll just have to be patient and wait and see.

I enjoyed this book

I enjoyed this book. A nice finale for the Dante series. The Hero and Heroine had good chemistry. There was not the angry, crazy, weirdness of the Hero in this book. I would highly recommend. A quick read.

I loved reading all about the Dante's. I wish there were more books.

The Dantes

After reading another of the Dante books, it felt like about the same situation as the other one. Which in a way is the point of the series. The storyline was great. However, it got really annoying when the characters kept saying they didn't believe it and yet doing things that showed that they did. And they do a little too much to show that they don't believe.

Another thing, in both books that I read, a lot of the topics in the books were not explained or talked about. When a character finds out very important information they're not always shown thinking about it.

last party in eden

This is the story of five girls sharing a house in Washington in 1965, at the start of the sexual revolution and the hippie movement with Viet Nam looming on the horizon for many of the young people in the book. We follow them as they try to make their way in life, enjoying their first taste of freedom, living away from home, wanting to embrace all the new ideas that they are hearing about, but at the same time still walking that fine line of respectability.

It took me a couple of chapters to get into this book, as there are a lot of characters to get to know. As well as the girls, there are the young marine recruits who spend their free time at the girls' house partying. The main character is Berdie, the oldest of the girls (yet still only 20) who tries to take on a matriarchal role in the house, guiding the other girls along their way, yet who still has her own dramas and issues to work through. It is a good pleasant read, with some interesting characters who, over the course of just a few months, will find their lives changing forever.

A wonderful read and a trip back to the 60's wrapped into one

Wow, what a great read. I was born in 1959 so I was still young when the events in the book took place although I do recall certain events.

It was so easy to relate to these wonderful characters and to appreciate the bias and stereotypes of that era. Woman and men alike will should enjoy this read as they follow a small group of small town woman who bravely embark on a journey of personal and professional discovery in Washington D.C.

I could really relate to these woman and their struggles and victories. It is an eye-opener for woman and men to see how far we have come when relating to each other in our personal and professional lives.

I you want to experience life in the 60's and enjoy a delightfully entertaining book while reliving a bit of history then this book is for you
