A wild ride of a book
Gypsies of New Rochelle is a wild romp of a book, which is zany, surprising, and sometimes heartwarming and tender. Jensonâs writing is reminiscent of Doctorowâs characters, and sometimes John Irvingâs gift for storytelling. I have read another of Jensonâs novels, and much of his poetry, but I found Gypsies of New Rochelle a particular delightâI grew up in a large family, and know what Jenson means when he talks about the characters being in love with the family. I fell in love with them, too. Shawn, the protagonist, surprisingly appealing, given his all-too-apparent flawsâbut he and many of the other well-drawn characters have âthe vices of their virtues and the virtues of their vices,â and we are attracted to them all. The âLatin-temperedâ mother, the âgood girlâ musical prodigy sister, the joined-a-cult cousin, the wildly different girlfriends, and more. Suspend disbelief and let Jenson take you on his gypsy caravan of a bookâitâs like Mr. Toadâs wild ride.
A tale of modern day gypsies is a gem
For most of us, family is all that matters. This is especially true for the Aldridge family and seventeen year old Shawn, its youngest member. The Gypsies of New Rochelle is their story. This book is full of rich and wacky characters, unique and comical situations, and moments of love and compassion. The writing flows smoothly, but includes many twists and unexpected turns. Jenson keeps us wondering how this flawed family of gypsies is going to survive and grow. It is a well written and totally enjoyable experience. I highly recommend The Gypsies of New Rochelle and Ivan Jenson is a writer to keep an eye on.
