Not sorry for picking this one up
I hadn't read anything that I can recall by this author prior to this book. I am so happy that I chose to pick this book up. This story just has such a natural feel. When you read it, you almost feel like you are telling someone else a story about an event that happened in your own life. That familiarity made me feel closer to the story right away and it was a feeling that stayed with me all the way to the end. On occasion, you read a book that is so special that you don't want to part with the characters even though you have reached the end. I felt that way about this book.
It was refreshing to read a book about a person who could have been as real as you or I, rather than some far-fetched spin about a rich person getting richer and snobbier and doing unreal things. This book touched my heart for the simplicity and beauty it presented to meas the reader. I highly recommend this book. One of the best I have read this year.
Tender story, good background, dynamic tension
Who would make a fence out of oven doors? Well, Joseph Pond did, and that's the very first thing Muri discovers about the father she never knew and yet recently lost.
Not used to this very rural setting or the community in which she finds herself, this is a story of life, history, family, and community. It is a story of self discovery and hope.
As Muri tries to resolve the conflict with the local land baron and the conflict this also causes with the community, she is also forced to face her own issues both as a parent and as a daughter. When her daughter runs away, she begins to seek comfort in the God her father writes about in the journal he wrote for her to read.
Alcoholism has torn apart many families, and I suspect more people than we care to admit will relate to Muri's own struggle.
I was given this book by the author in hope I would review it, and I am pleased to be able to write such a positive one.
If you enjoy contemporary novels with faith elements...
3.5 stars. This book has a great, Hallmark Channel movie type of premise. And who doesn't like that once in awhile? That said, I don't feel like the story delivered quite as much as I hoped. The plot revolves around a nasty rancher bent on taking the water rights, and the land, of our heroine who's just coming to grips with her father's death. The problem is, nothing much beyond that seems to happen in this story. Yes, there's a rebellious daughter angle, a slight romance, Native American themes, and some nice moments between family, but all of that could've been covered in half the page time.
