Publisher's Summary:
"What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others is, and remains, immortal."
Mikey Wright is a normal 13-year-old, with normal problems - until the day he finds out his dad has cancer. Getaway Day chronicles Mikey's journey to save his father's life and learn the meaning of his own. His journey to help his father takes him from the safety and security of his hometown to Anaheim and Chicago and back down Route 66. Along the way he's helped by some ordinary and extraordinary folks. Each one has something to teach Mikey about fathers and sons, growing up, family, and home.
His efforts are thwarted at every turn until Mother Nature steps up to the plate. When a freak storm deluges the Bay Area, forces postponement of the 1962 World Series, and makes it impossible to practice in nearby San Francisco, the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants make arrangements to work out in nearby Modesto. Mikey is inches from making his father's dream come true when an encounter with his high-school archnemesis threatens to ruin all of his work. Join Mikey as he learns selflessness and the power of believing. He discovers that expectations aren't real, loneliness is absolute, change is inevitable, and laughter is essential. Ultimately he learns that growing up means letting go.

Fun read
Mikeyâs story begins in junior high and continues through his first year in high school. Although he often refers to elementary school, his little league days and other events from his past, he mostly tells us about his friends and school days during those nine months in 1962. His story becomes more compelling when his father is diagnosed with cancer and Mikey tries to find a way to save him. He attempts to enlist the help of baseball legend, Mickey Mantle, and wants to meet Mantle to do so. A solo trip to Disneyland, a drive to Chicago with his aunt, letters sent to Mickeyâs mother and more are all part of his quest to help his dad. Along the way, Mikey begins to grow up and learn about how complicated life can be.
Intertwined with Mikeyâs story is his love of baseball. There are details and descriptions of many games played by the San Francisco Giants and the New York Yankees in 1962. If you like baseball, then you will probably enjoy the baseball stories in Getaway Day. If you are not particularly a baseball fan, but you are a boomer who grew up in the 60âs, you will find plenty of references to the trivia of those days, from the Beach Boys to John Glenn to the Vietnam War. Occasionally I found the number of such details distracting, but they also added a real sense of place and time to Mikeyâs journey. In the end, I wanted Mikey to succeed, even though I knew that his goal of saving his father would be impossible.
Full disclosure: the author and I went to the same elementary, junior high and high school. Although the only class we ever had together was our 5th grade year with Mr. Leach, we often saw one another at football games and other events throughout the years. At times as I was reading I found it difficult to distinguish fiction from autobiography, especially because White used the real names of most of his teachers and coaches. The names of his friends and neighbors were all fictionalized, but I recognized the real person behind many of those fictional names.
