Experience the story of Joseph and Mary like never before as the characters surrounding the events that brought Jesus into the world breath new life into this traditional story.
Mary is a headstrong Jewish girl, but when an angel tells her she's going to give birth to the son of God her life is turned upside down. She's going to need all the strength she can get as she faces the oncoming persecution of people who once called her neighbor. Then, when she's faced with the complications of her new fiancé, Joseph, and the reality of being a single mother, it all threatens to become more than she can handle.

Takes you there! Great for anyone, regardless of belief.
Forget the subject matter, this is just a good story. Even though the title is The Jesus Story, it's really a timeless drama about two people (Joseph and Mary) thrust together into a relationship fraught with challenges and asked to rely on their love and faith to get them through. The story reads like it could be happening today - but the added history and setting only lends to an even more intriguing saga.
The writing is contemporary but doesn't skimp of culture and accuracy. I never felt distant from the characters - they were relevant and relateable in a way no other biblical based story or movie has been for me. I was THERE. I could feel what these two young people were feeling, and I will never view the bible the same. The bible is now more "here" to me... not way back there about strange people I can't relate to. But again, you don't need an interest in the bible to be highly entertained by this book.
I highly recommend this book to anyone, and people with any interest in the story of Jesus will be especially entertained.
Small Town
I really enjoyed this book and its contemporary style. One of my favorite parts is Mary traveling to see her cousin Elisabeth. Mary meets up with a Roman girl named Aureila who immediately gives Mary a nickname. Aureila sized Mary up and assessed she was very naive. She called her "Small Town"! Their friendship begins and Mary learns that the world is not all chores and caring for family. This is what makes the book enjoyable; the every day encounters looking through the eyes of a young sheltered girl. A young girl who is about to become THE Mother of the Son of God! It doesn't disappoint and I'm looking forward to part 2.
Great Story that Helps Brings the Bible to Life!
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this novel! I was really hesitant about reading it, but decided to check it out with an open mind and it was such a good decision!
At the beginning Rich states that his goal in writing The Jesus Story Part One was to tell the story of Jesus in modern English and I think he did a fantastic job of fulfilling that goal! It really opened my eyes in what Mary and Joseph went through! I never even considered half of the feelings or situations that they could have felt/gone through! It lead me to relate to these characters in a way I had not previously!
There was a lot of rich details in describing the Temple, Jerusalem, and other surroundings throughout the story! Sometimes there was a little too much detail for my taste concerning the scenes with the Romans though.
