    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 106 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Audible Originals takes to the high seas to bring to life this timeless tale of pirates, lost treasure maps and mutiny, starring BAFTA-nominated Catherine Tate (The Catherine Tate Show, The Office, Doctor Who), Philip Glenister (Outcast, Life On Mars), Owen Teale (Game of Thrones, Pulse, Last Legion) and Daniel Mays (The Adventures of Tintin, Rogue One, Atonement), amongst others.
When weathered old sailor Billy Bones arrives at the inn of young Jim Hawkins' parents, it is the start of an adventure beyond anything he could have imagined. When Bones dies mysteriously, Jim stumbles across a map of a mysterious island in his sea chest, where X marks the spot of a stash of buried pirate gold. Soon after setting sail to recover the treasure, Jim realises that he's not the only one intent on discovering the hoard. Suddenly he is thrown into a world of treachery, mutiny, castaways and murder, and at the centre of it all is the charming but sinister Long John Silver, who will stop at nothing to grab his share of the loot.
One of the best-loved adventure stories ever written, Robert Louis Stevenson's 1881 novel introduced us to characters such as the unforgettable Long John Silver, forever associating peg-legged pirates with 'X marks the spot' in our cultural consciousness. Following the success of the double Audie Award-winning Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book: The Mowgli Stories, Audible Originals UK are excited to announce this reimagination of Stevenson's coming-of-age story that will captivate all of the family.

    A reflective adventure
The Audible dramatization of Treasure Island is excellent, with only a few false steps. Owen Teale is great as Silver, with his combination of flattery and ruthlessness. (I would have expected no less of Alliser Thorne.) But that points to one of the false steps here: the cast is named but not the parts they play; I was able to confirm that Teale was Silver only by locating a press release online. That seems a little ungenerous to my way of thinking.
For the record: besides Teale, Philip Glenister is Dr Livesey; Daniel Mays is Ben Gunn; Catherine Tate is Jim's mother. And who among the named cast plays Jim Hawkins, who with his narration has by far the most audio time? No idea. Even Audible'a promotional video doesn't mention him.
Another false step is that there are long gaps of silence between scenes. It's not unusual for an audio play to observe a moment of silence to mark a transition. But here, the gaps between scenes last several seconds; a couple of times I wondered if I'd gone into sleep mode by mistake. These gaps seem tailor-made for some linking music to be added in post-production, but there isn't any. It affects the pace. The gaps seem to slow things down. (There IS music from time to time, usually to set a somber or threatening tone.)
It's a subdued production: a quiet, gritty Treasure Island, one that avoids flashy swashing and buckling in favor of soft and sinister exchanges. And it's a reflective adaptation: with the help of a few lines and a couple of scenes not in the book, it creates a much stronger sense of moral ambiguity than in the book.

    Pride and Prejudice
    By Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen's classic comic romance, in which the five Bennet sisters try to find that most elusive creature: a single man in possession of a large fortune. Sparks fly when sweet, pretty Jane meets their new neighbor, Mr. Bingley, but her sister Elizabeth is offended by his haughty friend, Mr. Darcy. This is Jane Austen at the height of her powers, complete with ironic narration, hilariously drawn supporting characters, and romantic suspense. In this production, The Online Stage presents a fully dramatized version of Austen's most enduringly popular novel.
    Narration by Libby Stephenson.

Terrible accents and annoying voices take much away from this classic.
It is clear some of the actors do not have native English accents. The actor who played Bingley and the actor who played Wickham clearly are American, and didnt even try to put on a British accent. The actress who played Mrs. Bennett had the absolute most annoying voice and inflection, and I wanted to stop listening after hearing her talk the first time! I just prayed she didnt have many speaking parts. It was terrible and I have no idea how the director allowed her to continue. Absolutely horrid.
It also appears there were issues with the volume level. At some points, the narrator would be at a normal volume, and seconds later she was very loud. I assume this was the splicing of different takes. Very unprofessional...
The worst part is definitely anytime Mrs. Bennett (the mother) would speak. She ruined this for me. I wanted to listen to this version because of the different voices (versus another version with just one narrator for all parts). Bad decision. Choose another version. This is the pits. Youll want to stick a q-tip far down your ear holes. Terrible.
    Not worthwhile
Snarky Elizabeth, pallid Lady Catherine, Scottish accented Mr. Collins. Narrator without any ironic distance. In short, not a good production. only Mr. Darcy with listening to. Get the Emma Messnger reading instead

    Excellent story, excellent narration.
Michael Page perfectly brings to life Dickens' dry wit and deeply human characters, lending a wondrous vivacity to this classic tale.
Not my favorite Dickens, but worth the listen
I got this through Amazon for a VERY reasonable price on the book/audio combination. I was pleasantly surprised by the narrator (for that $$ my expectations where not great, as it were).
It is Dickens. It is a classic. It is very much worth reading. It is not my favorite of his works (and Pip frankly gets on my nerves), but I would still say "go for it".

For even the grandest houses have secrets.
As much a story about defying convention as it is about coming-of-age, Jane Eyre remains one of the most beloved novels in the English language. The free Kindle version is fine...
The free Kindle version is fine if you aren't reading the book for study purposes and if you know a tiny hint of French. In fact, I'm of the opinion that reading 160+ year old books on Kindle has the distinct advantage of access to the built-in English dictionary. You can look up archaic words immediately without losing your page, thanks to the 'back' button. I didn't mind the fact that there were no page breaks between chapters as one previous reviewer did. In fact the novel was so gripping and compelling that the very fact that there were even chapters to break it up left me feeling somewhat impatient!
The reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 probably has more to do with Kindle books in general rather than this book in particular. It reads as easily as any other book I've read on Kindle. But it's the kind of novel where you want to flip back to a certain section and re-read a portion just because of what is currently being said by the characters, and there is no way to do that. As for the French passages I had mentioned earlier, they are really very few in number and even if you don't know any French, don't let it stop you from reading this novel. They're all things said by one character or another, often repeated in English. (Thank you, Charlotte Bront)! None of it is important to the plot or to the characters themselves.
Charlotte Bront shows herself to be an incredibly masterful writer in "Jane Eyre." There were times when I just stopped to admire the style with which she conveyed something and the techniques she used. She is also incredibly insightful into human nature. The main character is an introverted person and all of her thoughts, beautifully laid out, make her into one of the most compelling characters in literature. Although it may be difficult to see this, I do think that the author was showing her feminist colors, such as they were in those days, when she conjured up Jane Eyre.
Thanks for making these classic books available for free on Kindle!
While not fatal, the flaws are serious enough to prevent Jane Eyre from being a true masterpiece
** spoiler alert ** After my extreme disappointment with Shirley, I returned to Jane Eyre, which I first read as a 'tween and from time to time afterwards would dip back into the romantic bits no St. John!) to finally read it again cover-to-cover. In this novel, Bronte writes like a pro, opening the story with a conflict that immediately engages her readers' interest in Jane and quickly follows up with another that firmly cements that affection.

    Format: Original Recording

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 745 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
A coming-of-age tale for the young and naïve 17-year-old Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey takes a decidedly comical look at themes of class, family, love and literature. Revelling in the sensationalist - and extremely popular - Gothic fiction of her day, the story follows Catherine out of Bath to the lofty manor of the Tilneys, where her overactive imagination gets to work constructing an absurd and melodramatic explanation for the death of Mrs Tilney, which threatens to jeopardise her newly forged friendships.
This Audible Originals production of Northanger Abbey stars Emma Thompson (Academy Award, Golden Globe, Emmy and BAFTA winner, Love Actually, Harry Potter, Sense and Sensibility), Lily Cole (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Snow White and the Huntsman, St. Trinian's), Douglas Booth (Noah, Great Expectations, The Riot Club), Jeremy Irvine (Warhorse, The Railway Man, Now Is Good), Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark, The Illusionist, Alice in Wonderland) and Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Never Let Me Go, Kick-Ass 2), amongst others.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Impressive." (Harper's Bazaar)
"This new production marries the author's wit, charm and dry humour with performances from some of the UK's leading actors." (Psychologies)
"A wonderful new dramatisation." (The Times)
"Emma Thompson leads a large, glitzy cast." (Economist)

There is no substitute for unabridged
This audiobook looked very good at first glance with an array of professional actor narrators handling a volume with much character dialogue. The Book has large sections of description and context which is lost by converting a long volume of text into a short play. In Austen as in many other novelists abridgment of this kind results in a huge loss. I'm afraid that reading or listening to a well narrated version of the entire book is superior to a skinnied down version. There is more than one unabridged version of this book available in audio.
Hmmm, not a fan of this one.
I had forgotten how objectionable the characters were in this story, so right away I realized that I wasnt liking the story itself.
Add that to the fact that the volume for many of the performers was very low and background noise interference made it even harder to hear them without constantly adjusting the volume and it was pretty much doomed for me.
Only bright light was the narration by Emma Thompson. She can make anything sound good.
Im sorry I bought this one.
    A Treasure
Northanger Abbey has always been one of my favorite Austen stories (along with Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and oh). Anywayit ranks WAY higher than Mansfield Park, at least. But Ive always loved that its Austens most obvious play at satire, demonstrating, perhaps ironically (or maybe, given Austens own life, not at all) what kind of trouble a wild imagination can get a young woman into. So it lends itself beautifully to this new high-spirited, and very funny, dramatization. It even seems that Austen has herself been cast as the omniscient and wise narrator (and who else more fully embodies those qualities than the brilliant Emma Thompson?).

But when Catherine's desire for social status results in her marriage to Heathcliff's wealthy rival, Heathcliff is consumed by revenge. And no one in his path will be spared.
Admired for its stark originality and condemned for its fiendish affront to the senses, Wuthering Heights polarized critics. For generations since, its themes of gender inequality, religious hypocrisy, social climbing, and the violent extremes of romantic obsession resonate to this day.

    The Best Kindle Option Available
I took a gamble on buying this edition when no one had reviewed it yet. I tried several other Kindle editions available and had found them truly appalling in terms of formatting. This however, is significantly better, featuring well structured chapter breaks and all the original illustrations, which enhance the story a lot.
Furthermore, considering it contains both books, plus the excellent Hunting of the Snark, it is a fantastic price.
However, there are still some glaring mistakes, such as some formatting bugs in a few of the poems and spelling errors in places (such as at the start of Looking Glass, where some of the Ls are replaced with 1s - I guess a scanner did the 'writing here').
5 stars for the great price and superior formatting over the other options. -1 star for the glaring lack of proof reading from the publisher.
    Good book
A classic children's book that never gets old. I bought it for my daughter and we read a chapter every night. The only issue I have is that it's a little smaller than I expected, but that's okay.
    Fun and ridiculous, as intended
Playful poetry may be more amusing for adults. In any case I finally learned about the Boogum. What fun! Theres some discussion that there is a hidden message in his poem. If so, I admit to it being way over my head!
    Italicized Text?!
I really wanted to like this--the original illustrations are beautifully reproduced--but bizzarely, half the books are italicized in their entirety, making them pretty much unreadable. If this were fixed, I'd give this 5 stars.
    Outstanding, of course.
There is nothing for me to add to the mountains of praise already out there for this masterpiece of nonsense literature â arguably the finest sustained piece there is, with only William Gilbert and Thomas Hood to rival it.
As the Victioran languge is sometimes a little dated, readers might care to go instead for Martin Gardnerâs Annotated verion that explains everything in detail (too much detail for some tastes).

    A Wilde classic!
Are good and evil inherent or learned, can a person who does terrible things still be good, and is getting old really that bad?
    great reading!
loved the story but the reading was perfect! Very clear and easily understood. very glad I read it!
    A Masterpiece
A simply brilliant piece of literature - witty, entertaining and eminently quotable from start to finish.
One to be appreciated but not enjoyed
Well-read, and I can appreciate the plot, but like so many other "classics," it's just sooo boring.
    Great Job!
Narrator is amazing. He really draws you into the world of the story.
The story is an awesome classic. It started a bit slow for me, but quickly I was immersed in it and didn't want to put it down.

    Excellent production
Another fantastic BBC dramatization. Held our interest during a long ride. Acting and sound effects are superb. We left out loud several times at the humorous parts. I wish BBC produced more of these.
    dated but faithful
certain story elements are politically correct for todays extreme left standards, nonetheless I'm glad they remained faithful to the story. good listen
    A fantastic story
Tim McInnerny (Lord Percy + Captain Darling from Blackadder series) plays intrepid explorer Allan Quatermain.
