Obsessed with the secret of creation, Swiss scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein cobbles together a body he's determined to bring to life. And one fateful night, he does. When the creature opens his eyes, the doctor is repulsed: his vision of perfection is, in fact, a hideous monster. Dr. Frankenstein abandons his creation, but the monster won't be ignored, setting in motion a chain of violence and terror that shadows Victor to his death.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, a gripping story about the ethics of creation and the consequences of trauma, is one of the most influential Gothic novels in British literature. It is as relevant today as it is haunting.

Storyline NOT the same as the text
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes, however, chose it as a read along with the text; several parts are missing or inaccurate.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Looking for a version that matches the book.
What about Nico Evers-Swindells performance did you like?
    Nice voice
Did Frankenstein inspire you to do anything?
Haven't finished the text... Looking for another version to match the book
    Nothing like the movie
I was taken aback. This is not at all the story that we all know as Frankenstein the monster from the movies. If you have ever thought about reading this book just get this version the reader is fabulous and the story is not that of the movie. This story is of loss and compassion and is so well-read that I could barely stop listening. bought this 5 days ago and have just finished it. Wow.
    A Masterpeice !
A Masterpeice, if you have not yet read/listened to this unforgettable story before do not for a moment hesitate. The author creates characters and movements so clear to the reader/listener's imagination its truly a wonder to behold and unfortunate this is Mary Shelleys only work.
    Depressing book - good narration
I never knew this book was so depressing... the word miserable is only used like 10,000 times in this book. Good narration though.
    A Brilliant Classic
This is a brilliant classic wonderfully narrated by Nico Evers-Swindell, which is definitely worth a credit.

Charles Arrowby, leading light of England's theatrical set, retires from glittering London to an isolated home by the sea. He plans to write a memoir about his great love affair with Clement Makin, his mentor, both professionally and personally, and amuse himself with Lizzie, an actress he has strung along for many years. None of his plans work out, and his memoir evolves into a riveting chronicle of the strange events and unexpected visitors - some real, some spectral - that disrupt his world and shake his oversized ego to its very core.

    Murdoch Amazes
This languidly beautiful first person narrative was completely engaging. The story was insightful and filled with reflections and thoughts on everyday life, looking both forward and looking backwards at retirement. Murdoch's skill at writing made simple daily tribulations interesting and even enticing. The characters were well developed and easily recognizable.
I loved Murdoch's use of the recurring theme of the ocean which created a solid framework or backbone for the book. The detailed description of the sea, its changing color, light and movement never became tiresome or too much. Instead it grounded the story, filled it with beauty, danger, monsters and destruction.
The narration was excellent. I wasn't sure about Vance at first but I was quickly won over by his reading style. The only negative I have about this edition of the book was that I really disliked the introduction. So if it bogs you down I'd suggest just skipping it. That part felt heavy handed. Don't let it turn you away from a wonderful book.
A classic, the 1978 Booker Prize winner and not to be missed. Excellent.
    Pure pleasure
    Any additional comments?
Simon Vance's reading is exquisite. I'd read this long ago, and listening to it was reminded again of how brilliant and often hilarious Murdoch's writing is. Vance captures the protagonist so perfectly I wish he'd narrate all of Murdoch.
All our failures are ultimately failures in love
"All our failures are ultimately failures in love." Iris Murdoch
Oh boy. This is deep, dudes. Far out and deeply deep, dudettes.
Rather than trying my unworthy hand at a thorough analysis of a psychologically complex 500 page novel, I shall lay track for a few grooves.
    Dig it.
Near the beginning, I thought it might be a romance. No way, man. More like a real Mystery of Mental and Emotional Health and Well-being.
What is love? How is the idea or thought of it, especially young love, affected by the passage of time, what with our tendency to romanticize our youth?
The painful paradox of the ego (false pride), with its fang-ed sea serpent 'jealousy,' blinding us to reason, depriving us of patience and filling us with anger, all of which operates to ruin the very love that our innate sexuality tells us to cherish above all else.
The ways we lie to ourselves to enable the fantasy, even to the edge of sanity, that another loves us despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
This is a thought provoker that goes down some murky places in the mind. Some readers may be turned off by what at times seems like a long-windedness of the first person narrator.

    Beginning of a journey
High Rising is the first book in Angela Thirkell's revisiting of the land of Barsetshire in England, this area having been created by Anthony Trollope many years earlier. If you enjoy a mixture of clever use of language, insight into human relationships, the frustrations of daily life, satire and more this may be the series for you. And Jilly Bond does a very creditable job of telling this story, distinguishing characters and portraying the spirit of the book.
My one complaint of this recording is that the headline clearly states "Alexander McCall Smith - introduction", and that introduction is NOT included in the recording!!! The introduction is present in the Kindle and paper versions, but NOT in the audiobook. Audible should either get Jilly Bond to read the introduction and upgrade/update the offering or change the way this is listed/documented to make it clear that the introduction is NOT included in the reading.
In spite of this, I hope very much that more of Thirkell's works will be made available through Audible and also that more of them be made wispersync compatible.
    Discover Angela Thirkell!
Would you listen to High Rising again? Why?
    No but I loved it.
What did you like best about this story?
The setting and the amusing characters.
Have you listened to any of Jilly Bonds other performances before? How does this one compare?
I liked her narration and I'd look for her again.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Comforting escapism.
    Any additional comments?
After this, I'm ready for more Angela Thirkell.
    Deliciously funny
Angela Thirkell has long been a favorite author of mine to read for charming escape from the day's dire circumstances. There is one sour note and that is the infrequent but disturbing casual antisemitism, sadly common in 1933. Thirkell's writing is marvelous and the comments are not relevant to the plot so I still highly recommend her books but reduce the stars by one.
Jilly Bond is the perfect reader.
    Humorous story of another time.
Another wonderful book by Angela Thirkell of well developed characters, in a small setting for those who need a reminder of good writing.
    Entertaining enough and with twists
What did you love best about High Rising?
I love the characters, the main ones being independent, self-sufficient women. The comedic thoughts of Laura about her boy was particularly engaging - it's how a parent can remain sane during different phases a child goes through.
Who was your favorite character and why?
No one in particular stood out.
What three words best describe Jilly Bonds performance?
Way too fast.At times in an effort to express certain characters, she raced through conversations.

great performance of a great text
one slight issue is that the enunciation wasn't always on the exactly correct words or syllables. So, sometimes, that made the very intricate and complicated sentences Dickens used difficult to interpret from the audio
    awesome narrator
I really enjoyed the narrator. He did a good job with the different voices, and I found some of his voices for the women to be very funny. but overall he was very soothing to listen to, and fit the part as Pip very well.
    The actor was amazing
Much more comprehensible with the narrator switching voices so well, made it feel like you were in the story
    good reading of a classic

The story follows two crooks from England, as far as I remember, who travel to Middle East and become kings; and by disregarding the previous beliefs they had loose it all.
    Good classic listen.
Reading quite good. Don't expect it to be like the movie. They're each good in their own rites.
    Ugh...
Ok, I know this was a cheap buy, buy why, WHY, do we have British stories being narrated with American accents? I find this really hard to listen to. It just feels like it's all over the place. I'd never expect to hear a Stephen King or a Jim Butcher book narrated in a British accent... What a waste... I think I'll just give it back!
    Fantastic.
Brilliantly written and brilliantly read. The incredible story of two con men who attempt to swindle the tribes of the Middle East. Highly recommended.

    What a treat!
Would you listen to The Canterville Ghost [Classic Tales Edition] again? Why?
Absolutely! It was such a refreshing and fun ghost story as well as a quick example of Oscar Wilde's biting genius.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Canterville Ghost [Classic Tales Edition]?
My favorite and most memorable moments were of the Ghost trying to gain the upper hand over the Americans. Highly recommended reading.
Have you listened to any of B. J. Harrisons other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not, but it would be a pleasure to listen to another of B.J. Harrison's performances. Well done!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Fiendishly frolicking foibles featuring foreigners and phantoms...
    Any additional comments?
    Loved this fun little gem!
    A Memorable story amd narration.
The Canterville Ghost is by far one my favourite short stories, and what better than having the prolific Mr. B.J. Harrison narrating this treasure tale.
Oscar Wilde's Humor Deserves to be Lingered Over
I love the work of Oscar Wilde not only for its wit and intelligence but also for its nuance. The story, Wilde's first published story, is about a ghost that haunts an English manor house. But the life of the ghost (pun intended) is upended when his ancestral home is bought by an American family. Because I don't want to put in spoilers I will just say that the cast of the family becomes central to how the ghost's ghostly career is threatened (nice little dig at Americans' love of gadgets and lack of historical tradition). And lest one think that it is only a dig at Americans that Wilde is intending, the family also becomes the ally of the Ghost in trying to end his spectral condition. Wilde was a very good writer who though he may have missed out narrowly on being a great writer, nonetheless left us with several gems. The Canterville Ghost is not the great comic gem that the Importance of being Ernest is, but it is a fine diversion that ultimately is quite satisfying.
    Good story
I had only seen the movies. The book was way above and beyond what I expected. Glad I got it.
    Good Oscar Wilde short story
Enjoyable short audio of the classic Wilde story; decent reading but with the typical Audible dropped words at the beginning of every chapter.

    Publisher's Summary:
A Tale of Two Cities is a story of love, mystery, suspense, and action all rolled up into one beautifully written novel taking place in two prominent cities, Paris and London, during the French Revolution. The story follows the release and rehabilitation of Dr. Manette, a man falsely imprisoned in the Bastille in France for almost two decades. While trouble is brewing in France with citizens being starved and taxed to death, Dr. Manette is taken to London by Mr. Lorrie, a prominent business man, and Lucie, Dr. Manette's daughter. The process takes five years, but eventually Dr. Manette has overcome his troubled times in the Bastille and returns to practicing medicine alongside his perfect daughter Lucie.
Dr. Manette and Lucie are asked to testify in a trial for Charles Darnay, who's accused of treason. Due to Lucie's compassionate testimony and a Charles Look-a-like, Sydney, Darnay is let off the hook and the love story begins. Both men fall in love in with sweet Lucie and she must choose which of the two men, who are complete opposites, she wants to be with. Lucie gets married to one of the men, who on the day of their wedding admits that he is not who they think he is, and is actually a French Noblemen and heir to the men who had Dr. Manette locked up in France.
Meanwhile, back in France, a group called Citizens of the New Republic are rising up against the monarchy and noblemen. With tensions high, Lucie's husband sets off to France in secret, where he is arrested. Lucie and Dr. Manette have only a short amount of time to be able to save the nobleman, and an unlikely ally will come to the rescue to pay the ultimate sacrifice.

A Captivating Story & Fantastic Narration!
From all of the works by Charles Dickens, this one is by far my favorite. A Tale of Two Cities follows the story of Dr. Manette who was falsely imprisoned in Bastille for almost 20 years, during the French Revolution, and in order to rehabilitate from his imprisonment, he is sent to London as citizens in France are being taxed and starved to death. Eventually, with the help of his daughter, Lucie, Dr. Manette becomes well enough to practice medicine again. The story takes a twist when the two are asked to testify against the treason of Charles Darnay; and during the trial, both Darnay and another man fall in love with Lucie. The man that she ends up getting married to will need her to come to his aid to avoid execution.
In terms of classics, A Tale of Two Cities is a work of art in the English literary canon. Listening to or reading this text will give readers insight into the French Revolution, and Dickens vivid detail will make them feel like they were actually there. The decision to have Philippe Duquenoy narrate this book was a perfect call. He greatly compliments Dickens through his delightful accent, variety of voices for characters, and a clear narration style that makes it a pure joy to listen to and easy to follow along.
Overall, readers and listeners will be able to lose themselves in this captivating novel, getting drawn into the story until the very last page. A great story made even greater with Mr. Duquenoys narration.
Apropos to today's state of affairs
The actions of Therese Defarge were justified when looking at the backdrop of how the citizens where treated.

    Publisher's Summary:
Ivanhoe is the perfect novel for any listener who loves an action-packed adventure based on the mythology and legends of Medieval times in England. Set in the 12th century, Ivanhoe is the story of a young man who joins up with Richard the Lion Hearted during a dark time where England is split between the Normans and the Saxons, pitting friends and family against each other through the conquering of land and the changing seats of the Royal Family.
After Fighting in the Holy Crusades, Ivanhoe returns to reclaim his love, stolen from him by his own father who intends to marry her into Saxon Royalty as the descendant of a long dead king. King Richard, with little interest in ruling the Kingdom of England, has allowed his brother, the despicable Prince John, to rule in his absence, sending the land into dismal times. After his capture, Richard escapes Austria, where he travels in disguise awaiting a rising to overtake Prince John and reclaim the throne.
The novel is a riveting adventure of jousting knights, damsels in distress, burning castles, escape and capture, and includes the famous Robin Hood and his Merry Men of bandits in an attempt to save the true King and Ivanhoe.

One of Walter Scotts Best Works!
Hats off to the narrator, David McCallion, for doing a wonderful job on this read. His voice was a perfect fit for this story transporting you to Medieval England with his delightful British accent and character voices...
The story follows a young man during a time of turmoil in England, where he finds himself in the midst of the fight between the Normans and the Saxons, pitting all of England against each other. Filled with exciting adventure, English mythology, and many jousting knights, the narrative will draw you right into the adventure from the very beginning.
Ivanhoe by Walter Scott is truly a work of art that many can and will enjoy. Don't think twice about adding it to your collection!
    Excellent Rendition of a Classic
Ivanhoe the tale needs no introduction, if you are expecting the movie you will not find it although for Hollywood the movie did stay close. The performance was excellent marred only, strange to say, the book itself. This was meant for reading not performing so sometimes the conversations get a little clunky. Well worth the time.
    A medieval treat!
Ivanhoe is a marvelous audiobook experience. While some of the old jargon and slow initial plot work of the novel may deter some, stick with the book and prepare to be dazzled by the heroines, Rowena and most of all, Rebecca.
    A classic tale
After reading the White Company, which I found very enjoyable, I also loved this rendition of the classic story of Ivanhoe. The narrator delivers the story in a soothing voice.
    I recommend it without reservations.
A classic story of Mideival England
sometimes the flowery language made it difficult to follow the story, though the performance was clear.

    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Gwendolen Harleth gambles her happiness when she marries a sadistic aristocrat for his money. Beautiful, neurotic, and self-centered, Gwendolen is trapped in an increasingly destructive relationship, and only her chance encounter with the idealistic Deronda seems to offer the hope of a brighter future. Deronda is searching for a vocation, and in embracing the Jewish cause he finds one that is both visionary and life changing. Damaged by their pasts and alienated from the society around them, they must both discover the values that will give their lives meaning.
George Eliot's powerful novel is set in a Britain whose ruling class is decadent and materialistic, its power likely to be threatened by a politically emergent Germany. The novel's exploration of sexuality, guilt, and the will to power anticipates later developments in fiction, and its linking of the personal and the political in a context of social and economic crisis gives it special relevance to the dominant issues of the 21st century.

    Poorly scanned
While I welcome a digital version of Penguin's DERONDA, with Terrence Cave's excellent notes, I'm dismayed at the lack of attention to detail. Some of the chapter epigraphs appear in miniscule type; many punctuation marks (especially periods) have gone missing; and there are outright howlers, as when "A Jew!" (an important word in this book) becomes "A few!" Is it too much to ask a major publisher to proof its digital versions? Apparently.
A brilliant story and an absorbing read
A brilliant story and an absorbing read. If you like tales set in the Victorian period then this is an interesting and intriguing story. The plot also features an element of society not often written about in books of a similar genre and for the time when the story was written was a brave effort by the author in casting a refreshingly warm, favourable and humane light upon a sector of society often stereotypically and unfairly demonised in other literature of that era. Whilst beautifully written a rich vocabulary I found some of the sentences and language in parts quite convoluted and drawn out making comprehension difficult. This however is mainly a result I am sure of my limited intellect and/or lack of desire or patience to dwell upon fathoming the underlining meaning preferring to press on with the unraveling plot. A lot of loose ends and questions left unanswered at the end of the story about some of the characters that I would have liked resolved and I am sure someone has or will write a sequel.
Among the best novels of the nineteenth century
George Elliot lays bare the soul of many characters, laying the foundation for the novels of the twentieth century. Following the prose is sometimes hard work, but well worth the effort for the picture of nineteenth century life encompassing class system, the lot of women, anti-Semitism and Zionism. There is also the advantage of the morality and ethics that are missing from many twentieth century works.
    Akward publication size
THis is an oversize book (8"x11:). THey took an 800page book and made it a 300 page book. It is very heavy to hold; therefore, not good for taking out of the house to read. THere was no indication on the order site that this was a "re-published" version of the book (printed to order, in April 2017).

    Publisher's Summary:
To the modern eye, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table have many similarities to our own contemporary super-heroes. Equipped with magical powers, enchanted swords, super-strength, and countless villains to take on, they protect the weak and innocent and adhere to their own code of honor. Comparing Batman, Superman, and Captain America to Sir Launcelot, Sir Tristram, and Sir Galahad isn't a huge leap of the imagination.
Perhaps, for the 15th century reader, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table were the equivalent of our modern day Justice League or Avengers. This audiobook gets to the heart of the narrative, telling the exciting legends of the supernatural, magic, dragons, beasts, battles, and chivalry contained in Sir Thomas Malory's epic in a contemporary and unaffected style. First published by William Caxton in 1485, this version is a faithfully unabridged narration of the complete Malory text (excluding the introduction). It includes the chapter numbers and descriptions used in the original manuscript.

Not for the faint of heart, but worth the journey!
What made the experience of listening to Le Morte D'Arthur the most enjoyable?
It's an English literature, history and foreign language lesson all rolled into one!
What other book might you compare Le Morte D'Arthur to and why?
It's a combination of all medieval stories, and the holy bible.
Which character as performed by Chris MacDonnell was your favorite?
Well it has to be Lancelot and Palamedes for me. The most noble nights, with definite kinks in their armor.Chris did a fantastic job with the Olde English, and the sheer multitude of characters! I can only imagine the chops he earned on this one! It was tough going at first, but Chris's steady, easy tone certainly helped me acclimate and learn. I feel like I learned a whole new language!
