    Title: The Pickwick Papers
    Author: Charles Dickens
    Narrator: Peter Batchelor
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 29 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-03-14
    Publisher: Trout Lake Media
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 106 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
Pickwick was a huge success. Chapman and Hall printed only 1,000 copies of the first monthly installment; at the end of serialization 40,000 copies were being printed. Pickwick had taken Britain, and later the world, by storm and had successfully launched Dickens to celebrity status. The Pickwick Club sends Mr. Pickwick and a group of friends to travel across England and to report back on the interesting things they find. In the course of their travels, they repeatedly encounter the friendly but disreputable Mr. Jingle, who becomes a continual source of trouble for all who know him. Pickwick himself is the victim of a number of misunderstandings that bring him both embarrassment and problems with the law.

A true classic! Dicken's characters come alive.
Would you listen to The Pickwick Papers again? Why?
Yes, I loved it, it is hysterical in parts..and I found myself wiping away tears on occasions. I love Dicken's Characters..I am Sorry this 29 hour book ended.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It real is hard to separate them, as they all play off of each other..But I loved Mr.Pickwick, Sam and of course Mr. "V"eller.
Have you listened to any of Peter Batchelors other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I will, he did a fantastic job.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Pickwick in debtor's prison, and when Sam would not leave MR. P
    Any additional comments?
I love period pieces and the classics, there were a couple of times it got a bit dry, but picked up to fantastic hilarity in the next chapter. I LOVED Sam Weller' s tongue in cheek humor, you felt at times that he was stepping out of the novel just to say the quips to you, then stepped back in and continued on with his part. I feel this would be tough for a novice reader to take on, it is a hard read due to being written in many parts with the English that was traditionally used in the working class. Again, I loved it, I hope you will too.
    amazing performance
This book has long been gap in my Dickens library... and would have been ponderous to read & keep the variety of recurring minor characters straight... but the reader was so remarkably able to create individual personalities that it was a much richer experience. .. such a delightful cast of characters, and so informative of Dickens' sensibilities. .. delightful!
Almost stopped reading it at first... wow
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Almost stopped reading it at first... wow what a mistake it would have been... it took me a couple of chapters to get into the book, but once I did, I was hooked. Mr Pickwick was such a character.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sam Weller. Loyal to a fault and resourceful as few.
Which character as performed by Peter Batchelor was your favorite?
    Again, Sam Weller.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud numerous times and chuckled repeatedly.
    Any additional comments?
Mr. Batchelor is a gifted interpreter of all of the characters and as such I cannot imagine anyone else reading Mr. Dickens' works but h.im
This is by far, Dickens at his BEST
Would you consider the audio edition of The Pickwick Papers to be better than the print version?
    Yes.

    Critic Reviews:
"This is a wonderful collection, so well done, I m continually amazed at how well BJ does the voices and the production is of the highest quality. The jeeves episodes are my favorites of all time, they make me laugh each time I listen to them time, which I do often. I can't recommend this collection and his work in general enough!" - Anthony G. "I have loved reading PG Wodehouse since I was a teen, and have never ever heard anyone interpret the zany hijinks and subtle sarcasm as well as BJ Harrison. There are nights I would try to fall asleep to his wonderful voice but the funny would keep me awake :) If you love the stories of Wodehouse, you will love how BJ brings them to life." - Dee "B. J. does a great job with all of the Wodehousian characters, male and female. I don't know how he does it, even mixing British and American accents when appropriate. Very entertaining and recommended to all of P. G.'s fans (which should be everbody who cares about great writing.)" - Grampaul

    No good to English ears
Can't tell whether the narrator is American or Scottish or what but the English accent is nowhere near right for these characters.
Why Audible can't make British performances of British books available is beyond me.
Don't buy this version of the wonderful Wodehouse stories
These are wonderful stories but this is the worst ever reading of them. The accent I'd ask wrong... Surely Bertie had to have an upper class London accent. And as for Jeeves, somehow his witty, ironic lines have become stiff and humourless. I love these stories and tried hard to persevere but had to abandon this recording a third of the way through. Just dreadful. Probably spoiled by the wonderful reasons by Martin Jarvis, but even without that comparison, this reading is just all wrong. Horrible.
Frustrating and distracting, the confused accents!
I'm a huge Wodehouse fan, but it is torture listening to this narration. B. J. Harrison can't seem to make up his mind about the accents, and his Jeeves is a flat, monotonous attempt at copying Stephen Fry's Jeeves from the t.v. series with Hugh Laurie.
I find myself so distracted by the ever changing accents, especially the random American pronunciations that keep appearing, that I can't focus on the stories. I am not sure I'll be able to stomach fifteen hours of this.
Don't waste your credits or your time with this one!
    Disappointing
American narrator!! Dreadful fake accent. P.G.

    Really BAD narration
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The book may very well be good, and I expect that it will be since it is Jane Austen, but the narration was so bad I couldn't finish it. I have downloaded another version to listen to.
What didnt you like about Mary Sarahs performance?
Everything. There wasn't anything I did like about her reading. The accent, the tone, the line delivery, where she did and did not place emphasis. I gave up.
    Any additional comments?
I got this version because it was extremely marked down. I can deal with some flaws, a little skip or a repeat and even mediocre narration. But this version wasn't even worth the marked down price.
    terrible narration
This narration is just unbearable. I have never heard a narration as bad as this.
You get what you pay for
What would have made Persuasion better?
Is this an English accent??? Not sure.. Strange.
What did you like best about this story?
    Story of course is timeless
    Any additional comments?
The narration is stilted. She doesn't capture the sense of the sentences.... the breaks are wrong. The sense is wrong.....
    Loved the book,hated the narrator.
I've listened to this book within 2 months from a different narrator and can tell you that this narrator does this book no justice.
Austin, lovely. Narration not so much.
I love this story. The narrator seems to be attempting an English accent. Distracting pronunciation.

One of Dickens best works appraising English society. Highlights the social and economic pressures of the times. A masterwork.
    Members Reviews:
    Gradgrind and M'Choakumchild
I first read this in high school - for some reason, our English teacher chose this rather than one of Dickens's better-known novels. I liked it well enough at the time but was not a huge Dickens fan, but some parts of it stuck with me all these years, and in many ways this is the most quintessential Dickens novel.
With such wonderfully Dickensian names as Thomas Gradgrind and Mr. M'Choakumchild, Hard Times begins by introducing us to Mr. Gradgrind's pedagogical philosophy:
You are to be in all things regulated and governed, said the gentleman, by fact. We hope to have, before long, a board of fact, composed of commissioners of fact, who will force the people to be a people of fact, and of nothing but fact. You must discard the word Fancy altogether. You have nothing to do with it. You are not to have, in any object of use or ornament, what would be a contradiction in fact. You dont walk upon flowers in fact; you cannot be allowed to walk upon flowers in carpets. You dont find that foreign birds and butterflies come and perch upon your crockery; you cannot be permitted to paint foreign birds and butterflies upon your crockery. You never meet with quadrupeds going up and down walls; you must not have quadrupeds represented upon walls. You must use, said the gentleman, for all these purposes, combinations and modifications (in primary colours) of mathematical figures which are susceptible of proof and demonstration. This is the new discovery. This is fact. This is taste.
Hard Times may also be Dickens' most karmic novel. Gradgrind, the extinguisher of fancy, imagination, and joy, raises two dour children on his regimen of facts and mathematical figures, and sees the results in a way that finally teaches him the error of his thinking, after his daughter has been unhappily married to a much older man and his son has become a dissolute wastrel forced into exile.
Hard Times refers, by its title, to issues that dominate Dickens's usual social commentary, here being the conflict between the haves (represented by Bounderby) and the have-nots. The main plot revolves around Stephen Blackpool, a decent uncomplaining man who falls afoul of his master, Bounderby, and then gets set up by Thomas Gradgrind junior as the fall guy for his embezzlement scheme.
Eventually, of course, everything is sorted out, good men are acquitted, nosy old spinsters and pretentious bankers get their come-uppances, pure-hearted Victorian maidens get their (eventual) happy endings, there are Dickens's usual tear-jerker deaths, and lots of wondrous Dickensian prose. Hard Times is one of the author's more obscure novels, but I think it ranks as one of my favorites, maybe just behind David Copperfield and Great Expectations.
    Another Classic
No one paints a better visual picture than Dickens. His mastery of the English language is unrivaled.
At least for me he never disappoints. I'm always sad to finish one of his books.
    Great book, but
Great book, but it can be hard to follow sometimes.

Good as a recap, but not much more
would have liked more in depth analysis of themes presented in the book. This was mostly just a summary of what happened, with a few mentions of the nazis and Soviet at places in the book where tje connection is obvious
    An impressive look.

    Publisher's Summary:
Held to be Dickens' finest novel, containing one of the most vast, complex and engaging arrays of minor characters and sub-plots in his entire canon. Memorable characters include the menacing lawyer Tulkinghorn, the friendly, but depressive John Jarndyce, and the childish and disingenuous Harold Skimpole, as well as the likeable but imprudent Richard Carstone. A suspenseful tale about the injustices of the 19th-century English legal system. This novel set the standard for modern day legal thrillers.
    Members Reviews:
Better example of Dickens' art than many others better known...
This is only my third Audible book and while Mr Batchelor has a fine voice his personalizing of the characters was not an addition to the story. Many times it actually detracted fro the story. His voice of Messieurs Smallweed and Vols verged on the annoying and while both characters are annoying I think Mr Dickens words aline served the purpose. I will not avoid books read by Mr Batchelor but I won't be searching them out either. As to the story, there is a reason it is a classic. Dickens weaves a great plot with enough subplots to keep the listeners' interest. The story line is revealed enough at the right time so as to not injury the overall story but also not scarcely so much so as the listeners' intelligence is insulted. That the story was originally produced in serial from it must do as it does. Worthy of a third book and moving on to Evelyn Waugh next.
    For the serious Dickensian
To tackle this novel in any form is no idle pastime, but requires a serious commitment of time and intellect. With its complex interweaved narrative strands (alternating between Esther's first-person narrative and that of a nameless omniscient narrator), its extensive cast of characters, and its frequent digressions, it poses a particular challenge as an audiobook. It is the kind of novel that should have an index, and which in paper form would have had me often searching back through the pages for a reminder about who had said what to whom and when. Since this was not supported in my audio reader, there was no alternative but to soldier on through the thicket. A novel this dense in character and incident would challenge the greatest actor, but with Peter Batchelor on top form my interest never flagged. If I had one quibble it would be with the production itself - the frequent "re-recordings" are spliced in rather too abruptly, distracting from the flow of words. As for the story itself, Dickens' usual slow buildup is taken to extremes here, but the eventual payoff is as moving as he ever achieved elsewhere. The difficulty for the modern reader is to comprehend how a lawsuit can simply continue under its own momentum without any prospect of conclusion for generations despite the best will of its parties to end it. This undermines its effectiveness as the central narrative device that underpins the action of the novel, but as a critique of the legal system of the time, it was epoch-making and quite possibly history-changing. The greatest incidental pleasure is to be had in the minor comic characters such as the paragon of "deportment", Mr Turvidrop, and the evangelist Mr Chadband with his orotund sermonising (ministers of any stripe rarely fare well in Dickens' hands). Serious Dickens fans simply must attempt this, but best you know what to expect beforehand.

    Publisher's Summary:
Who has not dreamed of life on an exotic isle, far away from civilization? Here is the novel that has inspired countless imitations by lesser writers, none of which equal the power and originality of Defoe's famous book. Robinson Crusoe, set ashore on an island after a terrible storm at sea, is forced to make do with only a knife, some tobacco, and a pipe.
He learns how to build a canoe, make bread, and endure endless solitude. That is, until, 24 years later, when he confronts another human being. First published in 1719, Robinson Crusoe has been praised by such writers as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Samuel Johnson as one of the greatest novels in the English language.

the narrators voice could cure insomnia
ive read the book a few times in the past its a great story but this narrator can talk you to sleep if i didnt love the book so much i wouldn't have finnished it
    Poor narration
Narration is awfully difficult to follow. Bizarre pauses in the middle of sentences and emphasis on random words throughout.
    Amazing read!
A true masterpiece full of adventure and spirituality. I wish I had read this book sooner.
    Narrator. Reads with. Strange. Pauses.
Robinson Crusoe captured my imagination years ago in spite of culturally offensive attitudes of the author's day. However, the bizarre and sense-muddling syncopation of this narrator is hard to bear. It would be difficult to exaggerate how bad it is. The reader's tone is ok, but the rhythm is so far off and so independent of the punctuation, that it's actually a challenge to follow the story. It's a no for me.
    Falling into a coma
The whole story is dry beyond belief. I have never hear what could have been such a thrilling story told with such utter disinterest. The reader does not help, either. His droning tone makes the problem worse. How this became a classic is beyond me, maybe tastes were different at the time. Whatever the case, it does not hold up, and I would give it a pass.

Dickens called David Copperfield his "favourite child," and many critics consider the novel to be one of his best depictions of childhood. Set in early Victorian England against a backdrop of great social change, Dickens acutely observed the phenomena of the Industrial Revolution and used them as the canvas on which he painted the novel. Many consider David Copperfield to be the authors finest work.
    Members Reviews:
    Delightful Dickens listening
Would you consider the audio edition of David Copperfield to be better than the print version?
For me, the audio edition of David Copperfield was every bit as good as a book. I think Dickens in particular lends himself well to audio interpretation. The special magic of the audio version for me is that it recalls that comforting feeling I had as child; of listening to my parents read a story and being carried away into another world.
What was one of the most memorable moments of David Copperfield?
It is impossible for me to chose a moment that was more memorable than others. David Copperfield is one continuous rollercoaster ride of joys, sorrows, hardships, heartbreak, tearful departures and joyous reunions. The cast of characters include some of the most memorable villians, noble women, cruel step-fathers and loveable unfortunates ever penned. It is first class Dickens.
What about Peter Batchelors performance did you like?
Peter Batchelor is perfect for Dickens. He is an entire cast of voices. His sure control of tone, mastery of timbre and accents are a delight. Being a baritone, Batchelor's only difficulty comes when playing women and children. Uriah Heep will make anyones skin crawl. The dialogues are particularly brilliant. In these, Batchelor needs to switch between characters, finding exactly the right voice for one and then answering immediately in another. It is dazzling stuff but the virtuosity is never at the expense of the narrative. One imagines this was the way Dickens himself would have read for his friends; revelling in the characters; growling, squeeking, lisping, mimicking accents and enjoying every minute of it.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Dr. Stong is married to Anne, a very beautiful and much younger woman. Uriah Heep has contrived to cast suspicion in the mind of the doctor that his wife had taken a young lover. Deeply in love with his wife, he is willing to let the situation fall into silence in order to keep her. Never confronted, Anne is neither guilty nor innocent. It is then revealed that Heep is a villian. This provides Anne Strong with an opportunity. The words that pour forth are some of the most beautiful and deeply moving in any book I have read.
    Fitting rendition of a classic
Peter Batchelor does more then justice to Dickens' epic fictionalised memoir. As a first-person narrative it is ideally suited for the intimacy of the audiobook format, and Batchelor is throughout at one with the material, his deep baritone rolling on with unflagging verve through the yarn's decades. Unavoidably he recedes a little on the female parts, particularly the vapid ingenue Dora, but his range and variety on the male characters is vast. My favourite was the Cockney climber Uriah Heep, but the country boatman Dan Peggotty's tones were rich and dark as gravy on the ear.

Great audio excellent performances and unforgettable satire by the master of the paranoid realists.
I have listened to this multiple times.
    Wonderful
This was a beautifully performed version of Orwell's claasic novel. This would be a very easy way to introduce this worl to children who might not be great readers. Or, indeed, to adults. A very approachable adaptation and highly recommended.
    Perfect read
An excellent reading of an excellent book! This dramatization brought to life an absolute classic of a book for anyone who is interested in world history.
    Wonderfully done
This was a great production of a true timeless classic. The voice actors were all amazing, music was fitting, and the pace was spot on. I highly recommend this to everyone
Not allowed to give a classic less than 3 stars
Somehow I had managed to spend my entire life without reading this classic. It's short and to the point. I'm not sure how this dramatized version differs from the original but I suspect the story lines and dialogue are similar. I'm glad this was short because I don't think I could have listened for several more hours. I did, however, like the dramatized version, replete with sound effects and murmuring. Made it a little better. I've listened and I can cross another classic off my list. Don't think I'll tackle 1984.

Set during the Reign of Terror following the start of the French Revolution... The title character represents the original "hero with a secret identity" that inspired subsequent literary creations such as Don Diego de la Vega (El Zorro) and Bruce Wayne (the Batman). The popularity of the novel encouraged Orczy to write a number of sequels for her "reckless daredevil" over the next 35 years. The original play was performed to great acclaim in France, Italy, Germany, and Spain, while the novel was translated into 16 languages. Subsequently, the story has been adapted for television, film, a musical, and other media.

    Good book. Sub-par reading
Enjoyed the story very much. Don't get this version if you want to listen in a car though. The reader's voice volume fluctuates wildly and often she whispers and is difficult to hear.
    Wonderful
Love this book, it was read beautifully! Lots of emotion, inflection, and tones to distinguish different characters which helps to really get into the story!
    Read for Homework
I had to read this story for my AP World History Class. It starts a little slow but it was overall a truly wonderful adventure. It was absolutely brilliant and kept me on the edge of my seat!
    Mildly Exciting but Dated
This is a classic primarily because it is a very early example of the popular superhero form. While listening it occurred to me The Scarlet Pimpernel might be the very first superhero in literature. It looks like the pimpernel was number two in 1903 (Spring Heeled Jack was reportedly the first in 1867). This novel was mildly exciting but is basically like a single episode of any superhero adventure. It was also a bit odd that the story was pro-monarchy. There were a few places where ill treatment of the aristocrats was condemned (while, of course, the aristocrats oppression of the peasants was not even mentioned). The narration is quite good. I am happy to have listened to this, but cant say I would recommend it to most modern listeners.
    The Scarlet Pimpernel
I have read this story before and liked it. The reader did a very good job making it an enjoyable time of listening.
