    Title: Brideshead Revisited
    Author: Evelyn Waugh
    Narrator: Jeremy Irons
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-11-12
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1027 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Evelyn Waugh's most celebrated work is a memory drama about the intense entanglement of the narrator, Charles Ryder, with a great Anglo-Catholic family. Written during World War II, the story mourns the passing of the aristocratic world Waugh knew in his youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities; in so doing it also provides a profound study of the conflict between the demands of religion and the desires of the flesh.
At once romantic, sensuous, comic, and somber, Brideshead Revisited transcends Waugh's familiar satiric exploration of his cast of lords and ladies, Catholics and eccentrics, artists and misfits, revealing him to be an elegiac, lyrical novelist of the utmost feeling and lucidity.

    Extraordinary
Would you consider the audio edition of Brideshead Revisited to be better than the print version?
    The audio version is sublime.
What did you like best about this story?
    Evelyn Waugh's magnificent prose.
What does Jeremy Irons bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Flawless phrasing; elegant, perfect timing.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
This has already been done, as one impeccable broadcast series. And when it aired originally, it was reviewed as television's "finest hour.". That will do.
    Any additional comments?
My audible library approaches 1,000 titles. I rarely submit reviews here on the website, preferring to tweet my impressions and recommendations. But when this title was released yesterday, I rearranged my day around listening.
Jeremy Irons' reading of "Brideshead Revisited" is magnificent.
Secondary, and even ancillary characters are fully realized, in the most surprising and wonderful voices--- Cordelia and Charles Ryder's father in particular. The vulnerable, sometimes diaphinous voicing of Sebastian and Julia Flyte, the narcissistic, calculated stutter of Anthony Blanche; worthless, unremarkable Kurt and lethally charming Lady Marchmain (a paradigm of toxic parenthood) surpass every expectation.
And of course, Jeremy Irons will be our Charles Ryder for all time. His pronounciation of the word 'forerunner' is a lesson for all dramatic actors. Be mindful, readers, that this same narrator's rendition of Nabokov's "Lolita" is considered to be one of the finest ever offered by audible.com.
Performances like this are what every reader and listener hopes for. This title belongs in everyone's library. Buy it, and be spellbound.
    A Counterpoint to Downton Abbey
A coworker of mine who's more "literati" than I am heard me talk about how I was surprised to enjoy a series like Downton Abbey, given that it's not typically in my wheelhouse. Since I tend to explore outside my wheelhouse quite frequently where good books are concerned, my coworker suggested this one.
On the surface, this book has quite a bit in common with Downton Abbey. It deals with the decline of the British noble class in the wake of the first world war and the romantic nostalgia it seems to invoke. But that's really where the comparison stops. This book concentrates more on relationships and religion, and how these concepts factor into the shaping of personal identity.

    Publisher's Summary:
Lucy Honeychurch and her older cousin, Miss Bartlett, tour Italy in the springtime. However, the pension they are staying at may as well be in London. The proprietress speaks a London cockney, the meat is overdone, and their windows give them a view of dirty alleys. However, when the socially clumsy Mr. Emerson offer to exchange rooms, this does anything but remedy the situation. You see, nobody knows what to make of the Emersons. It's so hard to know how to respond to people who speak the truth.

    very good read
The narration was most the difficult part. very theatrical, and while I realize that the stuffy high class nature of some characters calls for a different tone, it was a bit over acted. it also seemed like the same voice changing for male and female and this was distracting.
    great book. lovely story
    Good story, refreshingly clean read.
Narration was good, plot was interesting, excellent character development for the main character Lucy and her male counterparts.
    Masterfully crated story; Well narrated
    E. M. Forster is a master in his craft. This is a perfectly written novel-a love story. It did begin slowly for me; but I guess I was a bit impatient. Forster uses the characters to drive the plot forward using the omniscient perspective. The characters are presented through their action and dialogue, and some internal reflection. This is not a novel style heavy with narrative and author interruption, which is the preferred style of the modern novel. (See, Forster's book on writing a novel) The dialogue is natural and the characters are round and sympathetic of that time period. It is a joy to read a good story and good writing. The only qualm I have is that my Kindle version did not sync with the Audible in parts. The narrator's performance was well done and was a good accompaniment to my reading, adding texture and entertainment.
    Irritating Narrator
This is a favorite book of mine, but I simply cannot listen to this audiobook. Sadly, this is the only version that syncs to Kindle. So many other great versions are available here. I have the Frederick Davidson version, and several other stories read by Juliet Stevenson. Both are excellent narrators.
    A bit tiring
A Room with a View is the story of several women traveling and is fraught with their frustrations. It is typical of the literature of that time.

    Title: Pride and Prejudice
    Author: Jane Austen
    Narrator: Victoria Mcgee

    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Austens classic tale of love and values in the class-conscious England of the late 18th century is her most beloved. The story follows Elizabeth Bennet, one of five sisters, as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in landed-gentry society. One of the most popular novels of all time. Has been adapted to countless variations for the screen.
    Members Reviews:
An amazing story with a horrible reader
First, if you are going to read/perform one of the world's greatest books, you should at least sound interested. In addition, telling this story with an American accent just killed it.
Victoria McGee pulls off the tone of the story
Would you listen to Pride and Prejudice again? Why?
I would listen to this story again because it really captured the era. The class distinctions were interesting and the story is an historical snapshot of a time.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Pride and Prejudice?
I have read the book a few times before, but I thought the narrator really captured the biting commentary of the characters. The words seem so innocent, but they have a lot of power, and at times cattiness, behind them. I am a fan of the compliment delivered with the slap across the face and this story has quite a bit of that.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed all the way through the conversation between Lady Catherine and Elizabeth. It was like watching a tennis game where each tries to get one over on the other and Lizzy came out on top.
    Any additional comments?
The only thing that was a little off-putting were the huge silent gaps between chapters. I checked my iPod quite a few times to make sure that it hadn't stopped playing (my iPod does that sometimes for no reason). Once I got used to them though I just let it go.
Great story but I was disappointed with the reader
Love the book and have read it several times. The reader of this version is rather dry and at times you lose you place in the story because all of the characters sound the same.
    Terrible narrator
This classic wonderful book was read with the enthusiasm of a text book. She stumbled over the English accent, the attempts at character voices is terrible don't waste time or money on this version.
Great Love Story or a Novel of cynical wit?
Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice is often considered one of the greatest novels of all time; the story of proud William Darcy and the prejudices of Elizabeth Bennett. From Lizzies perspective their spirited courtship plays out on the page; in this witty comedy of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in early 19th century society.
Most of you would already know this story; youve probably seen an adaptation or two in your time. For me, I was never interested in reading this book, I knew what it was about but I never knew what to expect. Eventually I had to read this book, in part for university and because its a classic that will always remain on the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die List. This is the novel that just will not die; 200 years later since this was published the book still sits very often in the top ten in a lot of bookstores and other literary lists. Its been adapted multiple times as well as been retold many times (highlights include Lost in Austen & The Lizzie Bennett Diaries).

    Publisher's Summary:
Jane Eyre follows the emotions and experiences of eponymous Jane Eyre, her growth to adulthood, and her love for Mr. Rochester, the byronic master of Thornfield Hall. The novel contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, but is nonetheless a novel many consider ahead of its time given the individualistic character of Jane and the novel's exploration of sexuality, religion, and proto-feminism.
    Members Reviews:
    Wonderful story, wonderfully narrated
Emma Messenger is fantastic here! I have always loved this novel, and have read it many times, but I don't think I've ever enjoyed it as much as I did during this listen. One of my pet peeves with narrators of classics is when they read them woodenly, stumble over the language, or read as if they are reciting the phone book. Emma Messenger breathed such life into her narration that it felt like Jane herself was speaking to me.
I found her interpretations of characters ideal, especially Jane and Mr. Rochester. She really conveyed the passion and frustration between them. She managed to give each character a unique voice without sounding as if she were straining her own.
I plan to download other books narrated by Emma Messenger. I cannot express enough how truly enjoyable her interpretation of this novel is!
Also, with the classics I love, I tend to download different version of the same story (since they are often less than the cost of a sandwich here on Audible!) to have a different interpretation or version of the same novel. I have no intention of downloading another version on Jane Eyre, though, since this is perfection.
    captivating
Everything about this audiobook was outstanding, but I think the most important part for me was Emma Messenger's reading. Her voice, her rhythm as she read the story, her tempo, her subtle and pointed inflections, and her vocal interpretations of the characters brought me into the story and made me feel as if I was living the story with all the characters. Sometimes when I am listening to an audiobook, my mind wanders. Not with this one. I was engaged 100%. Thank you audible.com, thank you Charlotte Bronte and thank you Emma Messenger.
    Great book, wonderfully narrated
I had read Jane Eyre in school, but never remembered enjoying it as much then as I enjoyed this reading. The narration really brings out the story - her voice is perfect for this book.
    Perfection
What's not to love? Jane Eyre has been one of my favorite books since I was 13 years old and Emma Messenger is possibly my favorite narrator. Her voice is so soothing I wish she could personally read me to sleep every night, even during the exciting parts of the book. This audiobook is like listening to poetry. Simply perfection.
    Well done
Emma Messenger does a fine job with this overall impressive version of this great classic. It was wonderful to live Jane's life again. I had read it when I was a young girl and enjoyed it much more; got much more out of it, after returning to it after many years.

Title: Whats Wrong with the World
    Author: G. K. Chesterton
    Narrator: Bernard Mayes
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-30-12
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 124 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
In this important book, G.K. Chesterton offers a remarkably perceptive analysis of social and moral issues, even more relevant today than in his own time. With a light, humorous tone but a deadly serious philosophy, he comments on errors in education, on feminism vs. true womanhood, on the importance of the child, and other issues, using incisive arguments against the trendsetters assaults on the common man and the family.
Chesterton possessed the genius to foresee the dangers of implementing modernist proposals. He knew that lax moral standards would lead to the dehumanization of man. In this book, he staunchly defends the family against those ideas and institutions that would subvert it and thereby deliver man into the hands of the servile state. In addressing what is wrong, he also shows clearly what is right, and how to change things in that direction.

    The mind that finds...
"The mind that finds its way to wild places is the poet's; but the mind that never finds its way back is the lunatic's."
    - G.K. Chesterton, What's Wrong with the World
Written 107 years ago, Chesterton's 'What's Wrong with the World' is dated on several topics, primarily regarding women. But even if it wasn't dated, that wouldn't change the essentials of why I am always simultaneously thrilled and frustrated by G.K. Chesterton. I may not agree with what he says, but I always adore how he says it. In that way he is like another English writer Christopher Hitchens. I would read Hitchens and practically yell and the book in parts, but God how I loved the gift of Hitch's words. Chesterton, if born 75 years later, may have had a sparing partner in Hitch. They seem very similar in rhetorical boldness.
Chesterton genius was (and probably still is) found in his playful use of paradox. He, I believe, is the master of rhetorical paradox. He doesn't just want to argue the point. He wants to twist the argument, reframe the debate, make a tangle of both sides, and show the world a third-way. He approaches issues of politics, class, sex, education and tries to show how often both sides of the argument are blind. He looks at a chessboard where both black and white pieces are stuck in a perpetual check and instead of suggesting a draw, he adds a couple pieces, or suggests billiards.
What is surprising is not how often I disagree with Chesterton, but how often I agree with a text that was written 107 years ago. It is also surprising (the math is easy here because he was born almost 100 years before me) to discover he was 35 when he wrote this book. It seems a bit curmudgeonly written for a 35 year-old. But that is also one of the charms of Chesterton. Even as a youth, his witty writings and his conservative attitudes seemed like those of a sarcastic, slightly drunk old sage than a haughty young intellectual. I may admire Charles Darwin more, but I'd probably want to drink with G.K. Chesterton.
    Timeless
Chillingly contemporary for a work from this era. Poignant. Challenging. Excellent audio performance as well.
    Chesterton at his finest
great book great recording. the prince of paradox, the Apostle of Common Sense does it again.
    excellent for short commutes
I love GK Chesterton, my favorite book by his is Orthodoxy. this book has a great deal of insight, phenomenal philosophy, and excellent comparisons.

The Swiss Family Robinson recounts the adventures of a father, mother, and four sons marooned on a tropical island. They encounter adventure after adventure, with discovery following upon discovery until, at last, they must face the choice of staying on the island that has become their home, or return to a civilization they left behind.
    Members Reviews:
    An enjoyable classic well performed.
Very enjoyable performance, excellent voice work and a nice steady, peaceful cadence, but not boring. I enjoyed the story even though it was quite different from the Disney movie adaptation. Delightful, relaxing and comforting.
1812 Classic - served authors purposes
So this was my first read of Swiss Family Robinson and it sure wasn't like the movie. Per Wiki the author wrote it for his 4 sons as a means of educating them on morals, industry and to learn about the animals and plants of the world and their uses. A small way into the book I was confused and looked up where Swiss Family Robinson is set... it just didn't seem physically possible. This island has fir trees, palm trees, dates, mushrooms, sugar cane, bamboo, potatoes, sea weed and their fruit trees starts grew well. There is a desert, swamp, mountain top, cove, jungle, plain, sea shore... I was waiting for the volcano. Buffalo, apes, lions, tigers, bears, whales, sharks, wolves, cyotes, penquins, seals, walrus, shrimp, crab, lobster, clams, boa constrictors, pelicans, flamingos, rabbits, deer... for the convenience of writing about many... it was set in an imaginary part of the world where all plants and animals florish. The pattern of the book is they discover an animal or plant and dad tells them all about it... much like the first paragraph of wiki... then they kill it, eat it, use its parts for construction of home or make a pet of the babies. The four sons in the book learn the basic steps of doing things like animal husbandry, wine making, building a canoe, how to get sugar from a cane... I almost thought Wyss would never run out of new animals and situations to discuss with the sons. I read it immediately after reading Robinson Crusoe and found them not a bit alike. As an older adult reader, I loved the mental ramblings and creativity (much more accurately protrayed) of Crusoe. Young readers I am sure would like the non-stop adventures as the boys encounter new things and are encouraged in their adventures by their father. I was more than ready for it to end, but also glad to have read it. Good narrator.
    truly complete!
Loved it! This is truly the complete unabridged version of my childhood favorite! I'm delighted!
    Very well presented!!!
This has been one of our families FAVORITE audio books! Everyone from the 4 year old up to the 40 year old loved it!
    great classic
I grow up watching the movie, the book is so much better. be warned though this is not for the PC crowd, they actually have to hunt and kill animals for food and the "mother" is actually proud to be a wife and a mother which in some circles today is considered sexist and misogynist. the narrator is great and really in bodies the father from the movie.

Title: Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass
    Author: Lewis Carroll

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-18-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 80 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
When Alice tumbles down, down, down a rabbit-hole one hot summer's afternoon in pursuit of a White Rabbit, she finds herself in Wonderland. And there begins the fantastical adventures that will see her experiencing extraordinary changes in size, swimming in a pool of her own tears, and attending the very maddest of tea parties. For Wonderland is no ordinary place and the characters that populate it are quite unlike anybody young Alice has ever met before.
In this imaginary land she encounters the savagely violent Queen, the Lachrymose Mock Turtle, the laconic Cheshire Cat and the hookah-smoking Caterpillar, each as surprising and outlandish as the next. Alice's adventures have made her the stuff of legend, the child heroine par excellence, and ensured that Carroll's book is the best loved and most widely read in children's literature.
    Editorial Reviews:
This much-loved classic gets a fresh and youthful approach from narrator Shelby Lewis. Alice tumbles down a rabbit hole in pursuit of the White Rabbit and finds herself in topsy-turvy Wonderland. Lewis gives Alice the right balance of curiosity and spirit as she encounters various strange creatures, experiences extreme changes in size, joins a mad tea party, and faces off with the Queen of Hearts. Lewis uses extravagant tones and variations in pitch and accent to flesh out the characters' eccentricities, and listeners will definitely revel in her vivacious performance.

American narrator all wrong for this book
The narrator is a great reader but Alice is a quintessentially English story, and the American narrator just doesn't work. I found it very jarring to hear all the unmistakably English characters speaking in American accents. I soon turned it off altogether.
    Not in English
Unfortunately, I didn't listen to the sample (should have) because it's read by an American and as I want this for my 6 year old daughter, I want it in English.

    Publisher's Summary:
This was the most popular novel of Radcliffe's time; Radcliffe's portrayal of her heroine's inner life raised the Gothic romance to a new level. The atmosphere of fear and the gripping plot continue to thrill today.
This is the story of the orphaned Emily St Aubert, who finds herself separated from the man she loves and confined within the Castle of Udolpho by her aunt's new husband Montoni. Here she must cope with an unwanted suitor, Montoni's threats, and the wild imaginings and terrors which threaten to overwhelm her.
    Editorial Reviews:
Ann Radcliffes most popular novel, The Mysteries of Udolpho, with its titular enigmatic castle, vivid landscapes, supernatural portents, and brooding characters is considered by many to be the standard by which all Gothic novels are judged. When her father dies, Emily is forced to live at the castle of her aunts new husband, the malevolent Count Montoni. The drama unfolds as Emily is treated cruelly by Montoni and alarming events constantly trouble her. Alison Larkin performs the grotesque and the sumptuous elements of the audiobook with equal dexterity, excelling at the villainous men who inhabit the story. If youre ready to escape into a romantic and chilling world, you won't want to stop listening to this classic tale.

    Thank You, Audible
    Any additional comments?
I have been waiting for this English classic to come out on audio for years. A brilliant performance by the narrator ranging from upper class English to serving maids, from lords to thieving brigands all rendered with exactness and enthusiasm that carries us through the narrative like a Harry Potter story. I'll have to reread my Jane Austen collection now that I can fully understand all her "Udolpho" references. One more benefit of this audio.
    Loved it!
So great to have the privilege of listening to this on audio by award winning Alison Larkin who is in dazzling form here. She should win an award for her portrayal of the villainous Montoni who very much reminds me of Scar in The Lion King.
Any serious fan of classic literature will recognize Ann Radcliffe as the grandmother of gothic fiction and the vampire craze we have to day owes much to her writing. This novel I believe was the first "best seller" and after listening one can understand why.
What separates a great book like this from the popular Twilight and Sookie Stackhouse novels is the obvious well rounded education of Ms Radcliffe. For example at the heart of the novel's mystery are the rogue italian militias that roamed the Apenines and Ms Radcliffe makes glorious use of the dark history.Where else would we learn about that? In addition the sentence structure and descriptive details are some of the best in literature and Ms Larkin renders them like Horowitz playing Chopin.
I've listened to it twice and look forward to at least a few more.
A Classic, but not my style
What disappointed you about The Mysteries of Udolpho?
Though this book is one of the greatest classics of all time, and I hear it's never been out of print, I can't say I found it a compelling listen. I struggle a little with 18th and 19th century period pieces anyway, but this one seemed to be more than usually drawn out, and though there is a great deal of drama and high suspense, I found it all rather contrived.

    Gripping
If you could sum up Little Dorrit in three words, what would they be?
    Compelling, fluent, beautiful.
What other book might you compare Little Dorrit to and why?
Nicholas Nickelby. Both have characterisations that are descriptively magnificent and story lines that 'race' along in a linguistically serpentine adventure.
Which character as performed by Simon Vance was your favorite?
William Dorrit ( little Dorrit's father).
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Funny .......but yes if the truth must be known I have taken to extra long walks just to listen.
    Any additional comments?
Charles Dickens is my penchant at the moment. Simon Vance has made the journey just that much more colorful.
    Delightfully interpreted.
What made the experience of listening to Little Dorrit the most enjoyable?
Simon Vance interpreted each of the characters, bringing mood, tone and light to this narrative.
    mushy old story, well read
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Depends if they like Dickens..if yes then for sure
What other book might you compare Little Dorrit to and why?
    many other Dickens
Have you listened to any of Simon Vances other performances before? How does this one compare?
he's wonderful, especially with the classics.I try to find books that he "reads"
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    no...never do
    Any additional comments?
    not at the moment
The plot is quite convoluted, Vance is great
I don't want to spoil the end for those of you who don't know how Dickens wraps up this story. So I'll just say that I found it quite convoluted, pulling things from a hat - coincidences that are even beyond the typical 19th century coincidences in literature. I also wasn't enamored with the main character, Little Dorrit. She was too selfless. Hillel wisely said "If I am not for myself, who would be for me" - you have to take care of yourself, too. The commandment to love your fellow as yourself means that you have to love yourself first. Little Dorrit is held up as an ideal, and I would consider her psychologically damaged (and there are certainly reasons to be found). In fact, each of the characters could be discussed in depth, and that is what makes this book, in spite of its far-fetched plot devices, very good literature, worth reading (or better, listening to - hey, this is Audible!) Some of the characters are quite amusing, and Dickens, as always, develops them well. And of course, his writing is always a pleasure. But, by far, my favorite parts are the descriptions of the Circumlocution Office. This is simply brilliant, and so entirely appropriate for any government bureaucracy, still so relevant.
Simon Vance is superb in his reading of the book.

In Paradise Regained, Satan again is on the prowl, having successfully tempted Adam and Eve, and forced their departure from the Garden of Eden, here he sets out to tempt again - this time Jesus himself, as he comes to the end of his 40 days in the desert. The magisterial poetry of Milton enriches the encounter and, while not matching the greatness achieved in Paradise Lost, provides drama and depth.
John Milton (1608-1674) was an English poet and scholar. His classic verse has been studied and enjoyed by many, both for its insight into Miltons contemporary times and as a literary exploration of Biblical narrative and themes.
