There is a chapter about sliding, but none about skiing. Competitive eating and rhythmic gymnastics will have to wait for another book.

However, there are roughly eight chapters about tackle football - "the greatest sport in the world, and everyone knows it" - and a good four or five about horse racing. So quit complaining before you've even heard the book. There will be plenty of time for complaining after you've finished it.

Those sports that are covered in the book are examined with exhaustive inattention to unretained detail. Many chapters have nothing to do with sports. For instance, the chapter on hunting is about hunting for a hassle-free, triple-tall Americano, light on the water.

So, then, what exactly is An Incomplete and Inaccurate History of Sport? Part nostalgic memoir (like the summer Mark Sansaver hit 843 home runs in backyard wiffleball), part Dave Barry-esque riffs (like explaining bocce to non-Italians), part scholarly tract (it includes the origins of tackle football), and part metafiction (see "Time-outs"), it is what Kenny calls his anti-coffee-table book.

Could there be a more efficient book in print? Kenny gave less effort and got more results than anyone who has ever attempted to do something that would fall under that ratio of effort and results in bookform. I'm jealous, honestly.

I thought I saw this guy...

having a drink in a restaurant in Logan International Airport i. I looked him up on the internet and it turned out he had written this book. I read it and was definitely not disappointed.

I am a big Kenny Mayne fan. His sense of humor is beyond the usual. In this book, he takes us through sports with giggles and tears in your eyes, ( from laughing.)

Hilarious...but maybe not for everyone

I laughed out loud throughout when listening to this book. It really hits home, with both obvious and insightful observations of 'white culture' that helped me see the humour in myself and others.

But when I went to write a review and rate the audiobook I saw that perhaps the style of humour (and the dead-on tone of narration) is not universal. Definitely check out the sample; if you think this sounds like your cup of tea after that, you won't be disappointed!

This is not a bad audiobook. If it was all original material I would have given it a higher raiting but 99% of this material came from the writer's Stuff White People Like blog so I kind of felt ripped off after listening to it.

The material itself is rather funny by 'White' people the writer means educated, upwardly mobile, middle class types. There are some geniunely funny observations about modern middle class culture and "hip" culture. And the entries are all rather short so it is not exactly "Deep" or serious but a lot of fun.

If you have not read the blog or just want some light background noise you could do much worse.

Not from this author. The narrator suffered from working with bad material.

I would never listen to this author again. Work is plagged with platitudes and absolutely no wit.

Dry reading without much artistry. Mind you, consider the material.

Not the same

I've seen Second City in person and thought it was hilarious. I think something gets lost with just audio and no visuals. It was funny, but I wouldn't call it "The Best Of..."

Nuggets of humor

As a long time reader of "The Onion" I looked forward to this book and audio book with great anticipation. Like many things you believe will be great before you see them, this falls a bit short. When it's funny, it's oh so funny. I just wish it was funny more of the time.

Exaggerated Fun

From the moment I clicked play, I was hooked and didn't press stop until it was completed. This audio atlas takes a shred of truth about history and the world, stretches it like taffy, adds a generous amount of tongue-in-cheek humor and tops it off with no small amount of "just made it up". Every minute is riviting and entertaining. I highly recommend this book to anybody that comes within hearing/reading distance.

Hysterical in portions

I love pretty much everything The Onion makes including this book, but it has to be read in Portions. Its a great book to come back to every now and then but you get the feeling that they spent the biggest effort at the beginning of the book and maybe not so much at the end of it.

But definitely worth a read!!

Totally Unfunny

What disappointed you about Our Dumb World?

I was expecting at least a couple of laughs. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich was funnier. Apparently a dry delivery of moronic/sophomoric "jokes" is supposed to be funny. For example, when we got to the letter "L" , the narrator repeated the word "lonely" what seemed like forty times. Check, please! I'm outta here!

Seriously, you have to listen to this fantastic voiced stuff! Best three hours ever. Go! Now! Listen!

Neil Pepe, who directed the 2005 off-Broadway premiere, does the honors for this lively West Coast reading before an appreciative studio audience. The fine but apparently under-rehearsed cast doesn't quite pull off the precise comic timing the play requires for full effect.

A funny play but a rather forgetable work

I will say this I laughed lots during Romance and the play is definitely not for the politically correct but I was a bit taken aback that a great dramatist like Mamet would write such a silly and entertaining play with no substance that I could find.

Mamet has written some great comedies (Speed the Plow) but this is one of the only works I can think of that exists solely to be silly and make the audience laugh. The play is bordering on absurdist in ths structure and dialog but I could not really irk out a real theme or point in this work.

There is mention of justice, arab/jew/christian relations, and sexuality but I am not sure how Mamet wanted to tie those ends together. But as a whole a real funny (if empty calorie) play.

The highlight is Fred Willard (Best in Show) as the judge with a bad case of hay fever.

Overdoing the Blue (State) Humor

Sorta funny, but a little heavy on the same old "Bush is stupid, Cheney is evil, Republicans are greedy racists" brand of humor. Political insult humor can be hilarious, if it's clever and not malicious for malice's sake. John Stewart consistently pulls it off, for instance. Durst occasionally does as well, and there are some truly clever jabs and amusing insights sprinkled throughout the program. But too often he slips back into the well-worn Janeane Garofalo/Huffington Post school of snarky liberal insults that even moderates or independants like myself are starting to find tiresome. And if you're a conservative, you're probably going to hate it. Which makes the description of the performance as a sort of middle-of-the-road, nobody-is-safe-on-either-side-of-the-aisle affair seem pretty ridiculous, even misleading. This show definitely lists to port.

Granted, the Bay Area crowd clearly reinforce his blue-state tendencies (almost every time he says anything slightly politically incorrect or anti-liberal he gets the dreaded Disapproving Groan). And he plays brilliantly to that room, ending his show with a list of the most heinous words he could find to describe the Bush administration -- literally going on for 2 or 3 uninterrupted, snarky minutes -- and there's no question they ate it up. But it loses appeal if you're NOT a Bay Area liberal watching another Bay Area liberal bash a Republican administration.

Will Durst is clearly a smart guy with an interesting perspective on a lot of things, and I'd really like to hear more of his commentary in different environment. But it seems that he's got to get past the blue state material if he wants to appeal to the majority of listeners from both parties who just don't find Bush-Cheney bashing all that funny any more.

So...the part of me that didn't like Bush's policies a whole lot gives this 5 stars. The part of me that doesn't like liberal policies any better gives it 2.
