Narration makes a difference
I am so tired of publishers using lousy narrators (or in this case reader, because that's all he did) because they're too cheap to hire people with real talent. Not just any person can narrate a story. Storytelling is as much of an art as writing, or any other creative pursuit. A good narrator can make even the stupidest text enjoyable. Conversely, a bad one can ruin the best.
This text was far from the best - the author was a sloppy mediocre talent at best.
Possibly the most annoying part of the whole thing the "narrator" referred to D/s, the subject on which the entire story is based, as "Desse" as if it were the plural of "d" or an actual word. Seriously? How much clearer could it be that the "narrator" had no connection whatsoever with the text. And even in the "narrator" was so totally ignorant, the script editor, director or producer was either equally ignorant of the basis of the book as the "narrator" or gave the recording the most cursory of reviews.
So what we are left with then is a superficial treatment, annoyingly extended to increase suspense in a format in which the ending was highly predictable - I could tell you the ending but it wouldn't be an"spoiler" because we all knew the exact path the plot would take - made worse with narration that was c
Darker real life kind of read
I am going to warn you upfront there are many elements of this book that will not appeal to traditional romance readers. The leads spend time in the sack with folks other than each other, this is usually a deal breaker for me. It is more real life romance, with all the drama and heartache, than a fantasy love.
While there were many things about this book that did not appeal to me, the fact the guy spends more time in bed with other women than the so called love of his life, I still enjoyed the read. In the end I agree they were meant for each other, they just took a long time getting there.
Roxi is all over the place for most of the book. For somebody so familiar with the lifestyle, she certainly has a lot of hang ups. For most of the book I was not loving Jonathan, he tends to think with his pants.
I love the mixed narrative on this book, it really helps you get into the mind of masochists and sadists. It does come with a lot of dram in the relationship, but the alternating POV helps you follow where the leads really are. Often times they say or do things out of spite, very real life!
