A substantive yet down-to-earth business book that entertains while it teaches leaders and aspiring leaders why and how they should shape their communications in order to be more effective and impressive.
It's a reality that athletes take more turns than most at public speaking and therefore provide both exemplary and cautionary examples to the rest of us. In Jock Talk, Beth Levine points out, in a pithy and poignant way, what executives can learn from these examples.
Jock Talk candidly examines the public comments of athletes, coaches, and team owners. Their stories serve to illustrate five foundational communication principles - audience-centricity, transparency, graciousness, brevity, and preparedness - that will help you find your best voice and communicate in a way that will build support, reputation, and business.
Jock Talk offers a no-nonsense approach to establishing a credible, likable, and memorable tone and speaking style. In addition to the insights provided by the five principles, you will get tips on delivery and an easy-to-use framework for developing a presentation or remarks for any occasion.
Members Reviews:
Much more powerful than its simplicity would suggest. I wish I had started here.
This is a 5-star book for a particular person/situation: you need a few simple principles to remember, and act on. I've done a lot of successful presentations, and coached dozens of experts in sharing their findings. I wish I'd found this book years ago. I already knew almost everything in it. But what the author provides is focus, simplicity, and a constant focus on a thing that is hard for all of us: going int a presentation from the audience's point of view.
She has started with a perspective many communications types lack. That is, she is NOT about manipulating the audience. She has identified the few really crucial points, and connected them in a way that is easy to remember. And she's written it in a style that seems designed to help the stuff stick. It's not the most academically impressive or elegantly written book on this subject. But it's the one I would give to someone who wanted to improve a lot, right now, no matter what level they were starting from.
An easy-to-ready guide for improving your public speaking skills
You will learn something from this easy-to-read book. Jock Talk offers great tools to be a good (and confident!) public speaker. Public speaking doesnât have to be scary. Read this book and get fresh advice, tips, and tools that you can use right away. Iâm definitely going to use this book the next time I have to speak in public. Iâm planning on buying extra copies and giving them to friends who say they hate public speaking -- they will feel differently after reading this book!

This a really quick and useful read! It reminds me of the One Minute Manager except for communicators and a little more polished. The added bonus was the easy to follow exercises at the end of the chapters, which really solidified the content for me. And I usually just ignore exercises. Anyway, the book has actually provided me with useful tools for public speaking. I think that is actually a pretty rare feat for these kinds of books.
