The Sorrow and The Pity Redux

Zola's "Germinal" examines the lives and struggles of miners back in the late 19th century of France. Citizens felt embolden and entitled as descendants of a revolutionary spirit that was forged in the uprisings of 1789 and 1848. Those struggles, victories, and terrors offered both spirit and guidance to them as they fought poverty and inequality in their hopes for a better and just life. A just life. That is the thing that resonated with the miner and their families the most. That is what they went on strike for.

Every strike has it leader, and Entenne Lantier--an umemployed railroad mechanic, an outsider, an intelligent and thoughtful man--who took on the difficult and dangerous job of a miner at the Le Vorux mine became that leader. In this mining town he finds men, women, and children scraping and digging for coal in the belly and small veins of the underground as they dealt with lethal gases, temperamental fault lines, and streams that could suddenly rise and flood the belly of a mine. Entinne digests the sorrows and pity of these miners, takes an interest in the political philosophies of the moment, and formulates a resistance in which he pits the mining community against its amorphous bosses. The outcome is one worth reading.

Zola's prose is ornate, as his narrative is detailed. In this he's faithful to the literary tradition of his time. Some have centered in on his abilities to examine the psyche of his characters. He accomplishes this with a tension created in his main character of Entinne, a tension that permeates a performative union between the surface and the underground, found in both the setting that he inhabits and his person. A black sky that umbrellas fields of corn and beets, the candle-lit, small square room that houses seven, and the pit into which a cage filled miners descends all mirror the turmoils within Entinne, a somber man on the surface with the fire and rage of an untamed beast within. All of the tensions and indignities of the miners and their ad hoc leader are tested and narrated in a moving and eventful story.

Capital, Labor, struggle in early industrial age French Coal Mine

Probably very accurate for the subject and time depicted, but I have no way of comparison. The story itself is dark and horrifying on many levels, and yet fascinating.

Funny but one must adapt to mittel-Europa kultur of a bygone age in order to enjoy.

The reviewer happens to be an ancient mariner. Thus, adaptation fairly easy

Thomas Mann's last joke.

Thomas Mann's last novel, uncompleted. It features a protagonist who is the essence of the artist Mann, and this protagonist is a conman and impersonator.

Not a good story book for children

Iâve always loved different renditions of this story, but had never read the original. I bought for my kids for Christmas. This was a difficult book to read out loud for kids. The language and writing are definitely not of this age. I donât reccomend if youâre buying for children, but a nice book for a collection or something.

A story of love and want.

I love O'Henrys writing. If only I could tell a story so succinctly! The emotion of each character is laid out very simply yet clearly. That's what this story is about, emotion.

Heartwarming

We all know the story. 2 people in love without a penny doing a selfless act for each other at Christmas time. It's a must along with the Christmas Carol by Dickens.

A good reminder what is really important

A good quick story. Sometimes we forget about what is really important in this life. This is a good reminder of that.

Beautiful short read

You can read this in about 15 minutes. It's a beautiful story of sacrificial love. it's a free ebook! It's an excellent read.
