    Character of a Child
This is quite simply one of the most beautiful, heart rendering stories I have ever heard. Breaking down every barrier, looking deep into the human spirit, revealing the good in a boy who had every reason to be bitter, to be broken beyond repair, this historical tale brings the reader from the child's escape from a concentration camp through his journey through Europe. The genuine, forthright way that David deals with his environment, the people he meets, those who would harm him or help him is touching, amazing, thought provoking. That a child who had escaped from a lifetime in a concentration camp could have such compassion and reasoning of right and wrong, that he would choose to believe in "the God of the green pastures" . . . the God of the David in the Bible . . . well, it goes to show that words, even few words spoken to children with ears to hear are sometimes retained. Though the book is historical fiction, it is true to the times, and well could have happened. God bless those who lost family members in the concentration camps . . . God bless those who survived . . . and God help us all who let it happen.
    David stole my heart
What did you love best about I Am David?
The way the writer describes the surroundings
What did you like best about this story?
Every little detail, especially the way David pray
    Which scene was your favorite?
Every time he calls out to the God of the Green Pasture, it is sooooo sincere
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
When you surging for something bigger than yourself, do as David: God of the green pastures..... it is me... David
    Any additional comments?
Read this book 3 times, listen to this book twice already, only downloaded it in this week
    I Am David
I had no expectations when I bought this book. It's succeeded in blowing me away. What an amazing story. And the narration is fantastic.
    Well worth a listen
I've loved this book since I had to read it in year 8 at school. The story is intriguing and the main character, David, grows and develops as the story unfolds. It was well read and flowed smoothly. I'd definitely recommend this one!
    Wonderful
My sixth grade teacher read this to us once and for some reason I still remember it, at least bits and pieces, till now almost two decades later. I decided to hear it again and I'm glad I did. The narration was excellent. The story is exquisite, with so many important themes and I think some gospel overtures as well. Very well worth it!

Never apart for long, the two are very much peas from the same pod: Sir Melchior Hazard, surviving head of a great acting dynasty, who is imminently to celebrate his 100th birthday. Packed with gags, tears, histories, mysteries, feuds and romantic (and some not-so-romantic) unions, 'Wise Children', like the Chance girls, doesn't miss a trick, and is jam-packed with all of the entrancing magic realism and nouveau-feminism that has ensconced Angela Carter so snugly in the canon of revered cult writers.

Unique vaudeville world and engaging reader
If you could sum up Wise Children in three words, what would they be?
    bizarre
    seedy
    glamorous
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
There were a lot of characters and backstory, not such an eventful plot.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When the twin girls meet their uncle for the first time and he charms them with a magic trick.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the twins met their real father and were not acknowledged.
    Any additional comments?
I had a hard time keeping track of all the characters in the extended family and caring about them. The tone and setting were very unique, and made the book interesting
    Engrossing storytelling
    Any additional comments?
I absolutely loved this audiobook and was quite bereft when it finished. Not only does Angela Carter tell a fascinating story, but the narration was a perfect fit to the main character. There is a wonderful sense of time and place and I found it easy to imagine the different characters from the book itself and from the way they were voiced.
I highly recommend Wise Children and will be looking out for more Angela Carter audiobooks.
Best audio book I've ever heard
What a great loss the quirky, brilliant hugely imaginative and humane Angela Carter was. I read this years ago when it first came out - but Eileen Atkins's pitch-perfect reading made me gurgle with delight. What a National Treasure she is.
    Wise children
Wasnt my cup of tea didnt like the characters enough to persevere with it but Im sure it would be interesting for others involved in acting and theatre
Brilliant entertainment, naughty, funny and nostalgic-a real treat.
The narration of the story is brilliant I really enjoyed the characters the plot and the history.
Wickedly funny in places this story had me in tears of laughter and at times sadness. Overall the story is down to earth witty poignant - thoroughly recommended.

It was easy for Casca to go along with some of the basic premise behind the Nazi war machine. These men were soldiers, hard fighting men born of the same militaristic outlook that had sustained him since that fateful day at Calvary.
Inevitably, the high sounding ideals of the Third Reich revealed hidden horrors. In the background is always The Brotherhood. Discovering this hidden organization, and as the war begins going badly for the Nazis, Casca loses faith in the Fuhrer and other leaders. Finally, Casca has no choice but to visit the bunker in Berlin, a visit perhaps more important to the world than any other act he has ever committed.

Of course, where there's paradise, trouble can't be far behind. Trouble, in this case, makes its entrance in the terrifically charismatic and silver-tongued form of a young revolutionary named Fidel Castro. The Caribbean is fast becoming a strategic Cold War hub, and Soviet intelligence has taken Castro under its wing. The CIA's response is to send the one man capable of eliminating Castro: the legendary gunfighter and ex-Marine hero Earl Swagger, who proved his lethal talent in the national bestsellers Hot Springs and Pale Horse Coming.
In Cuba, Earl finds himself up to his neck in treacherous ambiguity where the old rules about honor and duty don't apply, and where Earl's target seems to have more guts and good luck than anyone else in Cuba.

    OK Story; Weak Narration
This is my third Stephen Hunter novel. Although it is the weakest of the three, it is till a good story and kept my attention.
However, the narration detracted substantially form the enjoyment of this book. The narrator frequently "over acts" in a way that is inconsistent with the characters. He also badly mispronounced at least 5 or 6 words. Isn't there an editor who listens to the narration so such mistakes can be avoided? Pay a little more and get someone with talent like Scott B. or George G.
    Very disappointed
it's a shame that a great trilogy about earl swagger was ruin with a horrible narrator. I don't understand why they changed, the first two were great.
Another wonderfully crafted work of Stephen Hunter.
While this is another in a long list of great Stephen Hunter novels, something lets it down. I'm not one to often use worlds like "THE best" or "THE worst" - but the let down was THE worst narrator I believe I've ever heard in an Audible book. Maybe it's my ear, perhaps it's the narrators voice. But the two never found a way to meet without causing distraction.
I love Hunter's work, however I hope I never encounter that irritating voice again. At least now I'll be able to recognize the name and see it coming. (shudder)
    very good
loved it....now off to the kid's story....can't wait to see where that leads us to...
Narrator- I have listened to many books - this is the WORST narration I have ever listened to. It was all I could do to finish.
The tone of the narrator's voice was HORRIBLE!
It was annoying - it was all I could to finish the story!!! This guy needs to find another profession!!!

    I don't like "Christian" fiction.
What does Kate Forbes bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Although I didn't care for the sappiness of this book, the narrator was very good, and made it much more palatable than it would have been in written form.

    Publisher's Summary:
Before Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley's life before her arrival at Green Gables - a heartwarming tale of a precocious child. Her lively imagination and relentless spirit help her to overcome difficult circumstances and exemplify a young girl's ability to love, learn, and above all, dream.
Published in 1908, L. M. Montgomery's coming-of-age classic Anne of Green Gables has enchanted generations of readers, both children and adults. The story of the spunky red-haired orphan from Prince Edward Island is known to millions, and copies of the eight titles in the series have never gone out of print. But when readers first meet Anne, she is only 11 and has just been sent from an orphanage to meet her new family. No one ever knew the events of Anne's life before she arrived at Green Gables. Until now.
For the millions of readers who devoured the Green Gables series, Before Green Gables is an irresistible treat: the account of how one of literature's most beloved heroines became the girl who captivated the world.
    Editorial Reviews:
Budge Wilson's prequel, which charts the first 11 years of Anne Shirley's life, completes the series by providing the details of Anne's past before she went to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. Wilson's writing is just rich and emotive as Montgomery's, and Renée Raudman portrays a young Anne who believably grows in words and heart. Also consistent are Raudman's excellent portrayals of the memorable minor characters.

    very charming
I found this book to be very charming. The author did an excellent job of continuing in the tone of L Montgomery. It was so much fun to meet Anne before she came to Green Gables and to get to know her and understand where she was coming from. The narrator did an incredible job. I enjoyed it so much, I bought the hard cover to add to my collection, and recommended it to all my Anne friends.
    Delightful
This was a fun listen. If you are a fan of that Anne-girl you will enjoy getting to know her parents and those who helped set the stage for our little orphan's later years. I loved it! :-)
    captivating
I love Anne of Green Gables and this was just as good. It had me laughing and crying. I was imagining right along with her. I loved it.
A disgrace to the "Anne of Green Gables Series"
Absolutely dreadful! Anne is relegated to a caricature of who she is in LM Montgomery's beloved series. The author clearly lacks imagination as the story is both agonizingly simplistic and the characters underdeveloped and without any redeeming qualities. Anne is made ridiculous in this book and I heartily wish it had never been written. The narrator is abysmal with a voice that renders her characters one-dimensional and pathetic. She is truly the worst! Do not buy this book - stick with the real thing from Ms Montgomery. G

    timeless story
I didn't realize until I was part of the way through this listen that it was anything more than a work of fiction. Imagine my surprise when I started seeing the names of characters from Palace of Illusions in the actual book I was reading. Upon doing a little internet searching, I discovered that Palace of Illusions is actually a re-telling of the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata, told from the point of view of Draupadi, the main female character.
You will not always like or sympathize with Draupadi--she is a pampered, self-centered, vindictive woman who doesn't appreciate what she has until it is gone. Her story is compelling, however, and the reader does a wonderful job, using subtle changes in her voice and accent to characterize the many different people in the story. This one is definitely worth your time. A note of caution, however--the author's previous books on audible, from The Brotherhood of the Conch, are aimed at upper elementary or middle school aged children. The Palace of Illusions is probably not appropriate for children of that age.
    Great Listen
I have read Mahabharata from several authors and every time I listen to the story some new thought always occur. I am very picky about authors who re-write what Vyasa has written. I downloaded this book due to my wife's insist and I am not at all disappointed.
The great epic has been told from Panchali's view point and the reader has done an excellent job.
I will recommend this book for anybody who are interested in religious mythologies and Mahabaratha itself is a very thought provoking story and this book will introduce you to that.

    A good listen
I got this largely because audible doesn't have any recordings of the Mahabahrata. ( I am never sure if I have the H in the right spot, please forgive.) Last time I looked audible was not lacking in "classics" how is it possible they fail on this? Seems rather a crime to me really.
2 days after I went searching for a recording of the Maha and this came up in the search, I saw this story recommended on a fantasy read list on the Tor website. So I came back for it
Its a good story, plenty of intrigue, plenty of magic. First person narrative ALWAYS puts me off.

    Daughter of York
Excellent Book. A York Family Tree was helpful during reading as the book does stay very close to history and the characters are very believable. The narration was perfect and you leave the book caring about these people as if you really knew them. Always a good result of a well written book.
    Wonderful Book
A fabulous historical fiction story. Following the life of a young noble girl as she becomes princess and falls in love and is betrothed and married to another. A story with depth, character development, & inner plots of love, politics, & religion. All the things you shouldn't speak about at the dinner table weave themselves into this wonderful story.
    York Outstanding
The story line flows like a novel. Kept my interest to the end. Especially enjoyed the scene descriptions. Rosalyn Landor is an excellent narrator.
    Very engaging book

Would you try another book from Isabel Allende and/or Isabel Varas?

Is there anything you would change about this book?
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
La historia es agradable, lo que no es es muy definida. Isabel Allende es una escritoria increible, este no es uno de sus mejores.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
    La vos es agradable.
Did Ines del Alma Mia [Ines of My Soul] inspire you to do anything?
No, No me hubiera gustado vivir en esos tiempos y ver la destrucion de los indios por los conquistadores.
Not my favorite Allende novel, and it was poorly produced
The woman narrating the novel had a very pleasant voice, though at times it was a little precious, but I couldn't tell if it was the writing or her interpretation.
The production values of the audiobook were horrible. The producers included a soundtrack that was distracting at best and totally inappropriate at its worst, and there was too much of it . Whoever chose the music clearly hadn't read the book, and I am giving that person the benefit of the doubt, because if they had read the book and still chose the tunes they chose, that person needs to find another career.
This novel takes place in the 16th century in Spain, Peru and Chile. Intro and outro music for chapters and sections was mostly "America, The Beautiful." Battle scenes were underscored with "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" Toward the end of the novel they saturated the underscoring with "Flight of the Valkyries" from Wagner's Ring Cycle.
