    Publisher's Summary:
They have been with us throughout the ages: the "Invisible College" of wisdom and their adversaries, the destroyers. The history of the world is their story - a conspiracy as vast as time itself.
Naples, Italy, circa 1764: A young aristocrat is about to stumble onto one piece of the great pattern. As witness to a vicious assassination and victim of his passion for the beautiful daughter of his enemy, young Sigismundo Celine is forced to begin a mystical odyssey amidst an ageless clash of Freemasons, Mafia, and the Illuminati.
Sigismundo begins his journey of discovery accompanied by the boy Mozart, the immortal Dr. Frankenstein, and the infamous Casanova as the forces of light and darkness seek to claim him for their own. For all are certain that he is the long-awaited one whose powers - can he but master them - will remold the destiny of the entire world.
Before Dan Brown, Umberto Eco, and The X-Files, there was Robert Anton Wilson and The Historical Illuminatus Chronicles. Beginning in 1982 with The Earth Will Shake, Wilson set out to trace the conspiratorial and philosophical underpinnings of Western history. By the third and final novel, the Chronicles expose the historical cross-currents of Freemasonry, the American Revolution, Rosicrucians, the Marquis de Sade, and the Illuminati, revealing a saga as elaborate and startling as history ought to be!
    Critic Reviews:
"A delicious treat....Wilson is a vivid portraitist with a perfervid imagination, and he regales his readers with occasional infusions of wit. Buy and enjoy." (Analog)
"More important than Ulysses or Finnegan's Wake" (Timothy Leary)

A powerful start to the series
While starting out a little slowly (not for lack of drama - the book starts with a murder during Sunday mass in the church), the book steadily builds up momentum while weaving together narrative threads like the complementary harmonics of a sonata.
Intrigue, murder, lust, revenge, class conflict, conspiracy, the book covers the gamut of topics and ties them together in the central character of a somewhat likeable, but very human, Napoli musician - Sigismundo. Starting with the character aged 14 years, and following him for the next six to seven years, the book takes him through his slow maturation while introducing an increasingly complex series of plot elements.
Where is the rest of the series, I need closure!
    Not for Everyone
If you are easily offended by material which questions orthodoxy, stay away from this book, but if you are interested in alternative views of the Universe and the nature of gods and men in the Universe, this book may be for you. While the narration could have been better, it didn't undermine an interesting and thought-provoking story.
Another thing to consider is that this story ends very abruptly just about the time that it gets going strong. Considering that the sequel, The Widow's Son, has been out for awhile and has yet to make an appearance on Audible, don't expect to get closure any time soon.
I wish the rest of this series as well as the Schroedinger's Cat trilogy were currently available.

    excelent
Good book and excellent narration. After just few hours I felt that there couldn't be a more appropriate reader for this book. She is not using only accents to delimiter the characters but different tonalities as well. I didn't have any confusion whatsoever during the dialogs. I wrote this review in order to help dispelling the subjectivity introduced by some preceding reviews. Enjoy!
    Surprising!!!
At first I thought this would be a long long love affair. However, the story enfolded very good.
Intrigues, deceit, murder and romance, its all in the story.
So after a long and slow start (which I did not mind at all), there was a thrilling mid section and then there was a surprisingly end.
Every few years one of the main figures is telling the story (more or less).
    I have enjoyed it!!!
    Excellent!
I prefer historical novels over fiction but this book made me a fan of Susan Howatch. I don't agree with the other reviewers about the narrator - I often buy books simply because Nadia May IS the narrator. There's no way she could give different voices to the dozens of male and female characters who come in and out of this story. The book is engaging and entertaining, holding the reader's attention throughout. Although I didn't care much for the cold-blooded golddigging 1920s "just my baby daddy" Diana Slade and even less for her weak-willed, p-whipped lovers, the author did a great job with character and plot development. I don't know about the title since these people were neither that "rich" (like the Vanderbilt or Astor rich) or so very "different" (they acted a bit ghetto/trailer trashy with the alcohol abuse, indiscriminate sex, lack of personal morals or respect for others). But this is a book you won't want to put down. I'm hooked and moving on my next Howatch novel!
    Good Value for Credit
I gave this one 5 because of the length and ability to keep me entertained for many hours. Nadia May is not my favorite narrator but she wasn't bad on this one.
The story seemed familiar to me and then it dawned on me that she was telling the tale of Julius Ceasar, Cleopaetra, and Mark Anthony.

    Publisher's Summary:
Uhtred is a Saxon, cheated of his inheritance and adrift in a world of fire, sword, and treachery. He has to make a choice: whether to fight for the Vikings, who raised him, or for King Alfred the Great of Wessex, who dislikes him.
In the late ninth century, Wessex is the last English kingdom. The rest have fallen to the Danish Vikings, a story told in The Last Kingdom, the New York Times best-selling novel in which Uhtred's tale began. Now the Vikings want to finish England. They assemble the Great Army, whose one ambition is to conquer Wessex. A dispossessed young nobleman married to a woman who hails from Wessex, Uhtred has little love for either, though for King Alfred he has none at all. Yet fate, as Uhtred learns, has its own imperatives, and when the Vikings attack out of a wintry darkness to shatter the last English kingdom, Uhtred finds himself at Alfred's side.
Bernard Cornwell's The Pale Horseman, like The Last Kingdom, is rooted in the real history of Anglo-Saxon England. It tells the astonishing and true story of how Alfred, forced to become a fugitive in a few square miles of swampland, fights his enemies against overwhelming odds. The king is a pious Christian while Uhtred is a pagan. Alfred is a sickly scholar while Uhtred is an arrogant warrior. Yet the two forge an uneasy alliance that will lead them out of the marshes to the stark hilltop where the last remaining Saxon army will fight for the very existence of England.
    Critic Reviews:
"Filled with bawdy humor, bloodlust, treachery, and valor, this stirring tale will leave readers eager for the next volume in this Alfred the Great series." (Publishers Weekly)

    Guilty Pleasure
As a 62-year-old woman, I suspect I am not the ideal audience for these books. However, I really enjoy them, with some caveats. They are solidly researched, with fascinating insights into a historical period that gets little popular attention -- 9th century Britain, when Britain was just starting to coalesce into the nations we know today. The cultural crosscurrents and conflicting loyalties that result are played out in the person of the hero, a guy who is a little bit Conan the Barbarian and a little bit wily Odysseus, drawn with red-blooded vigor and not a little humor. Some of the characters, and some of the plot turns, are comic book retreads, but many are quite deftly conceived, especially Alfred the Great, and Alfred's relationship to the hero. There is plenty of subtly-delivered information on daily life during this time (which I like very much) and vast oceans of blood and gore (which I don't, but I can accept that many do).
The reader of this volume is not my favorite -- every male character in the book is given a separate and distinct Scandinavian/British accent, which I'm not sure makes sense when no character, technically, is speaking any language modern listeners would recognize.
I am also puzzled why some books in this series are abridged and others are not. Especially since the abridged versions still seem to retain the vast oceans of blood and gore, rather than the details of daily life.
    as good as the first
I liked this book as well as the first. Same great story, same great character and same writing.

    Publisher's Summary:
The author of Ragtime, City of God, and The Book of Daniel has given us a magisterial work with an enormous cast of unforgettable characters: white and black, men, women, and children, unionists and rebels, generals and privates, freed slaves and slave owners. At the center is General Sherman himself; a beautiful freed slave girl named Pearl; a Union regimental surgeon, Colonel Sartorius; Emily Thompson, the dispossessed daughter of a Southern judge; and Arly and Will, two misfit soldiers.
Almost hypnotic in its narrative drive, The March stunningly renders the countless lives swept up in the violence of a country at war with itself. The great march in E.L. Doctorow's hands becomes something more, a floating world, a nomadic consciousness, and an unforgettable reading experience with awesome relevance to our own times.
    Critic Reviews:
"In this powerful novel, Doctorow gets deep inside the pillage, cruelty and destruction, as well as the care and burgeoning love that sprung up in their wake....On reaching the novel's last pages, the reader feels wonder that this nation was ever able to heal after so brutal, and personal, a conflict." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Uncivil War
Authors and historians uniformly treat war as either an individual's experience or some combination of military strategies and conquests. Almost never does an author show that war is not either or, but both.
Doctorow walks the tightrope in this gripping story of battles, conquests, race, class and individuals....especially individuals, representing every stripe and type all swallowed by Sherman's multi-bodied beast and its inexorable march to the sea.
In covering Sherman's campaign, the author makes it emblematic of the whole Civil War. The casual cruelty is more than any planned offensive. The lives broken and reformed a kind of mirror of a ravaged and remade Union.
There's not a single slow passage in the whole narrative and the urge to listen to it from beginning to end in a single sitting nearly irresistable.
More than any tale in memory, this is the most compelling reconstruction of what Civil War really meant.
    This is a must have!
    Great Book and Great Reader
This is a most enjoyable book, one of the best I have heard. There are many different voices ranging from the accents of southern, both those born free and the enslaved. There is also the ride range of voices found among the northerners. The reader does an excellent job.
The character development is wonderful and even though you know how the American Civil War ends, The March keeps you interested in its characters. You want to know what happens to Pearl, the newly freed young slave girl, Miss Emily, the judges daughter who looses everything when Sherman comes to town, particular soldiers, troop followers and a host of others affected by General Shermans march. You spend some time with Sherman and his officers, and the privates on foot. You meet an army surgeon born in Germany and a British reporter.
You encounter the brutality of war and still find some humor. The unexpected happens.
It is a good solid listen and one I look forward to hearing again.
    The Best
This is the best book I have heard or "read" since joining Audible. I think that the writing and the reading were excellent. For civil war history buffs, this is a must. I have tried others by this author and not been able to finish.

It's 1947, and the long-retired Holmes lives in a remote Sussex farmhouse with a housekeeper and her young son, Roger. Holmes has recently returned from war-torn Japan and settled into the routine of tending his apiary, writing in his journals, and grappling with the waning powers of his once razor-sharp mind. Then Roger secretly searches Holmes' private study and uncovers the case of Mrs. Keller, the long-ago object of the legendary sleuth's deep, and never acknowledged, infatuation.
As Cullin weaves together Holmes' hidden past, his poignant struggle to retain mental acuity, and his unlikely relationship with Roger, who stirs his paternal affection, a mythic figure is transformed into an ordinary man. At once an engrossing mystery and a gripping character study, A Slight Trick of the Mind is an affecting and original portrait of literature's most beloved detective in the twilight of his illustrious life.
    Critic Reviews:
"An ambitious, beautifully written novel....This look at Holmes near his natural death is a delight and a deeply satisfying read." (Publishers Weekly)
"This is a lovely, tenderhearted book, full of reserve, good manners, elegance of feeling. It's what a novel should be. You don't read it to be "improved", but for the plain joy of seeing what the language can do in the hands of an affectionate, very accomplished writer." (The Washington Post)
"Under Cullin's sure hand, the vibrant, assured detective we know gives way to a man who looks back with regret at missed opportunities in a manner that makes the larger-than-life figure surprisingly human." (Booklist)

    Publisher's Summary:
The year is 1797. Napoleon Bonaparte is racking up impressive wins in the field against the enemies of revolutionary France. On the seas, England is putting up a staunch resistance.
When a modest fleet of British ships off the coast of Portugal encounters a larger force of Spanish vessels on their way to rendezvous with the French, the English are quick to seize the opportunity for a victory, even at the risk of a calamitous defeat.
Twenty-five-year-old Charles Edgemont is second lieutenant aboard the HMS Argonaut, the smallest ship in the British line of battle. When orders come for the Argonaut to engage in an all-but-suicidal maneuver to cut off the escape of the Spanish ships, he leads his gun crews bravely, until the death of the captain and the first lieutenant elevates him to command of the stricken vessel. In the chaos that follows, his defiant refusal to yield under enemy fire earns him a permanent promotion.
Thanks to the purse awarded him by the Admiralty after the fight, Charles is wealthy beyond his wildest dreams. But there are challenges when he returns home after years at sea. His newfound riches will prove no help when it comes to winning the heart of Penelope Brown, the feisty Quaker with whom Charles falls in love. Even more of a hindrance is his profession, for Penelope regards war as sinful and soldiers as little better than murderers.
Changing Penelope's mind may just be the hardest battle Charles has ever fought, at least until fresh orders send him back to sea, where he faces a more traditional and equally formidable adversary in a series of stirring battles of will and might.

    A Wonderful Book
Jay Worrall has written a wonderful first novel in what I hope will be a long series. The characters are well developed, the sea battles are exciting, and the storyline kept me reading late into the night. Book two in the series, "Any Approaching Enemy" is not yet on Audible, but is also very highly recommended. This was the first novel of its kind (late 18th century nautical) that I have read. Whether it is your first or one of many, I urge you to read/listen. The narration by John Lee is an added bonus. Well done Jay Worrall!
    Muster and Commandeer
Not Patrick O'Brian... in a very good way. All of the naval action and concise rigors, condensed and crafted into a readable, enjoyable tale. A bit too "all's well" in the denouement... no lingering loose ends to keep one's excitement high for the next installment, yet such thoroughly enjoyable characters as to at least ensure interest. Well-read, good production.
    Rousing love/sea tale
Jay Worrell does a masterful job of weaving a somewhat improbable sea adventure and a more probable love story together. Clever twist is inserting an event from the life of the fictional hero Horatio Hornblower during his Spanish captivity at Ferrol, Spain. If you love a good sea story during the age of sail then this is for you.
    A Hardy Fun Sea Adventure
I totally agree with the previous reviewer,John. This is a fun sort-of-nothing-will-go-wrong-for-the-hero type story without being rediculous. The sea battles are descriptive enough, that if you are driving and listening, you have to concentrate on the driving a bit harder.

most boring book I have listened to!
I have never written a review. Of the hundred plus books I have listened to from audible this was the most boring and unlistenable I have come across. I have never not gotten to the end of book but couldn't do it with this one.
    Be warned!!!!!!! Very dodgy narration
He spoilt this book and he spoilt War & Peace - why do you give classic or historical books to someone who is so devoid of any ability to transform the words into anything resembling reality for the the characters or background scenes? His manner of speaking was completely wrong for this book; he should be left to read books by the likes of Oscar Wilde, which would be much more in keeping with his tone and manner of delivery.
    Grating
    Plot: Predictable and simplistic (*----)
    Narrator: Irritating, singsong delivery (*----)
Disappointing and difficult to get through.
    Plodding
It all moves at a level you'd expect for prehistorical people. Fight, build, fight some more, survival, build again, all without a lot of complexity. The characters are single minded and there are no great surprises.
    Beware: Annoying Narrator!
If you're interested in this book, I would highly recommend buying the paperback and not the audiobook. The narrator is incredibly irritating, and has been constant negative reinforcement against listening.
The book is a decent read - not great, but decent - but the horrible reader has almost made me stop reading the book several times.

    Publisher's Summary:
From Bernard Cornwell, the New York Times best-selling author whom the Washington Post calls "perhaps the greatest writer of historical adventure novels today", comes a saga of blood, rage, fidelity, and betrayal. In the ninth and 10th centuries, King Alfred and his heirs fought to secure the survival of the last outpost of Anglo-Saxon culture by battling the ferocious Vikings, whose invading warriors had already captured and occupied three of England's four kingdoms.
In AD 866, Uhtred, a boy of 10 and the son of a nobleman, is captured in the same battle that leaves his father dead. His captor is the Earl Ragnar, a Danish chieftain, who raises the boy as his own, teaching him the Viking ways of war. As a young man expected to partake in raids and bloody massacres of the English, he grapples with divided loyalties, torn between Ragnar, the warrior he loves like a father, and Alfred, whose piety and introspection leave him cold. It takes a terrible slaughter and the unexpected joys of marriage for Uhtred to discover his true allegiance, and to rise to his greatest challenge.

    Great Historical Fiction!
Cornwell writes exceedingly well. His historical novels are, usually, excellent and compelling with well-drawn heroes and dastardly villains. Cornwell's narrative style is often gripping and heavily laced with known historical nuances. Simply put, Cornwell combines imaginative storytelling with historical detail that "sells" the story in such a way that it often proves difficult to separate actual fact from fancy, which can be great fun. Never a disappointment, Cornwell deftly creates a backstory which often facilitates an intensely immersive listening experience. In addition, Cornwell's "Grail" series featuring 3 parts which includes (in order) "The Archer's Tale" "Vagabond" and "Heretic" are triumphant examples of historical narrative with superb adventure storytelling and sympathetic characters engaged in great struggles of class, character and conscience. Sometimes "dry" on-paper, Cornwell is a magnificent "listen!"
    really enjoyed
I read a couple of Bernard Cornwell books many years ago, and as I remember I thought they were alright. I listened to the A.Conan Doyle "The White Company" last month and I really liked it, so I wanted to find another book like it and this is want I came up with.
I liked this book almost as much and have already downloaded the next in the series, the pale horseman. It really moves and is action packed. It is very discriptive of the battle scenes. I also like the main character Uhtred, very no-nonsence, tough, smart and a little bit lucky.
I usually only listen to unabridged versions but there is no option on the first two books in this series. That is probably why the story goes so quickly, I can't help but think that I'm really missing a lot of the story
Not Worth a Credit for Abridged Version
I enjoyed Jamie Glover's narration and adore Bernard Cornwell's writing. But it's a travesty that abridged versions of these glorious novels are allowed to be created.
