    Title: Notwithstanding
    Author: Louis De Bernieres
    Narrator: Mike Grady
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-16-11
    Publisher: Whole Story Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 7 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of Captain Corelli's Mandolin; a heart-warming collection of stories inspired by life in an English village. Casting his mind back to the village where he grew up, Louis de Bernières brings us a forgotten England: where a lady might dress in plus fours, a retired general might give up wearing clothes and a spiritualist might live with her sister and the ghost of her husband. Here we find the atmosphere of those times as it was in the countryside, and the people whose lives are worth celebrating.

Lovely collection of interwoven short stories
Have you listened to any of Mike Gradys other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not yet, but will keep him in mind. He was truly wonderful to listen to and enhanced my enjoyment of the book.
    Any additional comments?
Louis de Bernieres is always a joy to read or in this particular case, listen to as an audiobook. I even love the appropriately wry title.
LdB can just as easily turn his hand to a simple refreshing tale such as this, or to the sweeping fact/fiction sagas of Birds Without Wings and Captain Corelli's Mandolin. His satirical War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts is highly entertaining. He seamlessly moves from having a twinkle to a tear in his eye with his poignant and perceptive narratives, which remain in one's mind long after the book is finished. Pathos and humor are handled with equal skill and delicacy.
Red Dog was not well received in written form (too short), but was made into the most delightful family movie - worth watching.
Set in the fictional English village of Notwithstanding, each chapter is a short story about the oddball characters and noteworthy incidents in the village, moving across different time zones. As a rule, I am not a fan of short stories, but the personalities in this small community intersect enough between the stories to tie them together into a single canvas.
I heartily recommend this light enjoyable book with its deadpan turns of phrase. If the subject matter doesn't appeal, you are bound to find a book of his that you will enjoy.
    If you like Correlli...
Superbly written and very entertaining from start to finish. The depth and complexity of both the characters and the story are fantastic. I was truly sorry when I had finished.
    Notwithstanding
This is a funny and thought provoking story which I have read in print twice before. Sadly the voice doesn't do it justice, too pofaced. However it was a description of the life in a small I can identify with.
    Stick to Captain Correli's Mandolin
Really didn't rate this book. Some of the stories went on far too long, and others stopped just as they got started.
    Disappointing.
    Delightful
Not sentimental but compassionate. Notwithstanding has been such an enjoyable listen that the book could easily have been twice as long and I would have loved every bit of it.

    Terrible book!
This is by far the worst book I've ever listened to. Chewed through the first few chapters - long winded, boring and incredibly racist. Stopped it after a few chapters.
Probably my worst purchase so far
Extremely disappointing and not the quality of work I would normally associate with Karin Slaughter, Mark Billingham, etc. whose books I have enjoyed in the past.
    Not for me
The summary sounded good, but I found the stories a bit too brutal. There was too much violence against women and the story on the train with the young man who was a bit slow was a distasteful I my opinion. I got half way through and didn't want to listen to any more. I listen to fiction to be entertained but I didn't find this book entertaining.
    loved it! thank you!
it was my first audio book ever and i found it extremely hard to stop listening to it

    Editorial Reviews:
A 14-foot-tall cow statue is mysteriously stolen from a small town market and no one sees a thing. Surly Police Chief Sam Jenkins must crack a case that has all the makings of a bad April Fools' joke. Voice actor David Colacci lends a distinct voice to each citizen of Prospect, Tennessee, in a performance reminiscent of classic gumshoe radio dramas. Author Wayne Zurl - master of the crime mystery - dishes out layers of intrigue, complete with good humor and clever riposte.
    Members Reviews:
A fantastic read and a keeper!
Wayne Zurl's Sam Jenkins is at it again! Solving the theft of a giant cow is all in a day's work for Sam, who tackles the task with laid-back good humour. Needless to say, the investigation is successful and good triumphs over you know what.
This, like all of the Sam Jenkins series, is well written and funny. The dialogue sparkles with good humour and clever repartee and needless to say, I am highly recommending everyone read it :)
    Who Stole the Moo
A fun investigation ensues after someone steals the fourteen foot cow statue from in front of the Prospect TN market. The sheriff goes on the hunt and a plea is issued on the news with the result of a phone call from someone with information leading to the cow's whereabouts. Do they find said cow? Well, you'll have to read to find out.
    "Holy Cow!"
The first line of this story really stunned me, "Somewhere in my own town, someone was dragging a really big cow behind his pickup truck." Why was I stunned? Because two-three years ago, at 2 a.m. the police had pulled over a truck that was dragging a cow on a chain behind it. Right in front of our house on Main St., U.S.A., in wild west Utah! The driver had seven guns in his pickup and was a mite drunk! Unlike the cow in Author Wayne Zurl's story ... this was a real, dead, bloody cow! On to this story, the cow is a replica advertising the re-opening after remodeling of Mr. Sanjev Patel's store, 'Git-N-Go Market." Someone had stolen the 14-foot Jersey cow while it still sat on it's trailer. Sonny Richfield, president of Richfield Dairies, owner of the advertising cow, is prepared to do whatever it takes to get his cow back. Poor Police Chief Sam Jenkins ... he doesn't have a clue or any witnesses to start the investigation. Then, he finds out that the hardware store is burglarized of three cases of spray paint. Rachel Williamson, a TV reporter, comes to Sam's aid by televising the theft of the popular Richfield cow (NOTE: I wish Sam would stop telling what he has for lunch! Those pulled pork BBQ sandwiches make me want to quit reading, jump into my car, and go get one!!) Anyway, after talking to a late night drinker at the local bar, Sam gets his first solid evidence about the cow-napper; he drives a white, heavy duty pickup with dual rear axles, and chrome, naked girls on the mud flaps.

    Publisher's Summary:
An anthology of 13 racetrack mysteries containing original short stories, centered on horseracing, by the following authors: Joyce Carol Oates, H.R.F. Keating, John Lescroart, Lorenzo Carcaterra, Lawrence Block, Ken Bruen, Jan Burke, Max Allan Collins, Thomas H. Cook, Pat Jordan, Michael Malone, Michele Martinez, Julie Smith, and Scott Wolven.
    Members Reviews:
    I was sold...
The title is a bit misleading in that not all of the stories are set at the racetrack and not all of the stories deal with murder. For instance, "The Hustle" by Pat Jordan is about a senior citizen conman who pulls one too many hustles. However, it's still one of the best stories in the anthology. I was really impressed since I was familiar with Jordan's FALSE SPRING about a baseball pitcher's travails in the minor leagues and hadn't thought of him as a fiction writer.
I'm addicted to the nags, but my real reason for reading this anthology was my good luck in finding new writers via the short story collection route (See TRANSGRESSIONS ed. Ed McBain). Otto Penzler, the editor, also snagged Joyce Carol Oates as a contributor. I've always felt she was a better short story writer than a novelist, and "Meadowlands" seems to prove my contention. Lawrence Block also contributed one of his Keller yarns. Keller has a contract on one of the jockeys if a certain horse doesn't win.
Despite the inclusion of these two heavyweights, the most impressive of these authors may be Ken Bruen whose "Return of the Thin White Dude...Screaming" enticed me to purchase one of his novels. He's an Irish writer writing about New York, and the thin white dude is David Bowie. Penzler describes his work as "among the darkest in the history of crime fiction." I love noir so I'm game.
I also invested in Michele Martinez's MOST WANTED after reading "The Long Shot." A comparison to Raymond Chandler seems fitting in this case. Michele is also a former federal prosecutor in New York City prosecuting drug gangs, so she ought to know her stuff.
There are a few clunkers, such as the too long and predictable "Zuppe Inglese" by Jan Burke and the short and choppy "Pinwheel" by Scott Wolven, but as a whole, this anthology is well worth your money.

He fights these battles on the streets of New York in the midst of its shady nightlife and the driving rhythms of the city. He plays one adversary against the other as a plan to save his life and keep the woman he loves.
    Editorial Reviews:
    L. A. Wilsons noir novelette features "Memphis Red" on his danger-filled trips in the early '40s underworld connecting entertainment in uptown and downtown Manhattan. Voices and emotions in the Mystery Writers of America member whose short stories frequently appear in mystery and detective fiction magazines range from a sonorous, steady, neutral baritone providing the exposition to impassioned, ethnic expressions of anguish. The interplay brings a unique tension to the story of men and women playing a game, sometimes of love and sometimes death, that forces them to alternate between roles as victims and villains.

I really enjoy listening to this book and wish there was a sequel to enjoy...
    Not one of my favorite.
I didn't connect with story because there wasn't much of a storyline and somewhat boring. I loved the narrating of the story.

    Title: 2-Minute Film Noir

Length: 1 hr and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-22-10
    Publisher: ZBS Foundation
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 14 votes
Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
2-Minute Film Noir is a series of two-minute stories based on film noir characters. They are stories about gangsters, bimbos, cons, cops, hookers, lovers, losers, platinum blonds, mink coats, high heels, and neon signs reflected on rain-slicked streets. The writer, Meatball Fulton, wrote 50 stories in total. Can you imagine? It almost croaked him. But he sez it's some of his best work. And that's also true of the composer, Tim Clark - he's done some great noir music for this.
Okay, what is film noir? It's a style of cinema story-telling that took a different slant on the American Dream. Since they were low-budget, "B Movies", the writers and directors often had a fair amount of artistic freedom and created some memorable plots and characters. So, what is 2-Minute Film Noir? Well, look Kiddo, the easiest way to explain it is to hear it. Give a listen. We'll be you ain't never heard anything like this.
    Critic Reviews:
"Fifty mini-crime stories each run from a minute-and-a-half to three minutes. These hard-boiled vignettes feature stories about thugs, dames, mobsters, and hat-check girls. They showcase narrator Tom Lopez's talent with jokes, puns, absurd situations, and philosophical insights. The full cast includes ZBS regulars such as Bill Raymond, who adds a wry tone to his private-eye style. These slightly interrelated stories are reminiscent of Damon Runyon - with an existential and hallucinogenic bent. Tightly timed dialogue and jazzy atmospheric music by Tim Clark set the mood in this entertaining collection." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
    Bland and uninspired.
All the right players are there, from the tough-talking gangsters to the honey-voiced, mysterious women, but the stories fail to sing. The dialogue is flat and uninspired, and the resolutions are often contrived and unsatisfying.
