Glimpse into life at turn of last century
Lovely character sketches with an open ending, I like to think a happy ending for the writer of a letter more inquisitive than indiscreet.
Close To Home
To accurately describe this book is ensuring one has their affairs in order, make good decisions in their lives. There are three main characters, and light reading. Captures all the essence of the era and being alone. Good story. Recommended for those who like short stories.
ABBOTT'S CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS ALONE ARE WORTH THE READ!
AN INDISCREET LETTER by Eleanor Hallowell Abbott was published in 1915. It is a brief read...maybe an hour or so in duration...and is a sweet, delightful tale about three strangers who meet and converse on a train. The conversation predominantly takes place between the Traveling Salesman and the Youngish Girl. Yet the description of the Young Electrician is the most captivating and colorful of the three. If a reader solely reads the book for Abbott's character descriptions alone, this little nugget is worth a read.
Sweet story and insightful
Hey it was free on kindle and the reviews were so positive I thought why not. So glad I read it!!! The characters are incredibly well developed and they all have wonderful surprising stories. Abbott is another of those lost authors worth discovering.
Charming, witty, but also wise
It takes maybe an hour to read it, but it fully describes entire people's lives. The words stay with you long after finishing the story.
Also, written in a beautiful language, full of witty metaphors that make the text, although short, full of substance.
I'm so glad I gave it a try.
