Publisher's Summary:
The stories in this collection examine the ways we use imagination to set aside human anguish and move on with our lives. Here, baseball opens a passageway to life after death, obsession transforms romantic complexities into a corrupted form of happiness, conquest and empire begets guilt and a healing sacrifice, and the recipients of medical technology deal with the well-meant horrors inflicted on them. In Collateral Damage, the collection's centerpiece, writer John Fromme suffers a mental upset caused by his refusal to confront a family murder he witnessed as a child.
Members Reviews:
Rod Serling Would Approve
Intriguing; Gripping; at times even Mind-numbing! In Collateral Damage and Stories, Bob Mustin has chosen to delve into the shadows of imagination more deeply and provocatively than social convention often is comfortable with and surely with more inventiveness than his Creative-Writing Prof would ever have envisioned. And to this reader, he seems to have done so with just a hint of a smile. And yet the author has written with such insight and awareness of the emotional mindset of the various characters, one would have to wonder if there may not be the âGhostsâ of some of his own âChristmas Pastsâ heâs writing about. Ranging from SyFy fun to heart-rending sorrow and to an occasional âWhat? Thatâs it?!â, Collateral Damage and Stories has the sweet fragrance in my hearkening back a half century to the iconic early TV series of my college years (1959-63), Rod Serlingâs The Twilight Zoneâa very heady comparison.
An elegy for important things
This collection showcases Bob Mustin's considerable talent-- for observation, for a well-turned phrase, for sensing the significance of a moment. But it's hardly a solemn affair. There's weirdness, myth, the supernatural, baseball, over-the-top stuff, keenly felt yet wry at the same time. Take your time over the title novella-length story. It's emotionally difficult but rewarding. I especially liked the baseball stories, but all of the offerings have the quality of good elegy, of engaging, let-me-tell-you-how-it was storytelling. Mustin is not asking the reader to go sentimental and nostalgic on him, however. Instead, the stories seem to come from a compulsion to declare, "This was important. This bears remembering." And it all does.
A Must from Bob Mustin
An engaging book that makes a reader think! Bob's work is always researched, adding credibility to his writings. He's written and published to a great degree. I recommend Collateral Damage as a wonderful addition to anyone's home library.
A definite must-buy for lovers of unusual short stories
The stories included in this collection are somewhere between Anais Nin and Ray Bradbury and the result is a strange, fascinating book that will appeal to readers in the horror, sci-fi and urban fantasy genres.
Thanks for the Ride
Bob Mustin has blazed new writing trails for himself, based on what I already know of his work. Sam's Place, his collection of Southern, literary short stories, was right up my alley for its gritty realism and deep, believable characters. This collection is full of unreliable narration and magical realism, so I salute Mustin for taking a different path and surprising me.
The novella, Collateral Damage, is the highlight of this collection.
