    Editorial Reviews:
Edgar Allen Poe, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Bret Harte, and others present Classic Detective Stories, Volume 2, a collection of tales about sleuths, clues, dames, and of course bad guys. A variety of talented audio artists bring these mysterious short stories to life. A different performer tackles each adventure, tailoring his voice and pace adeptly to the piece's tone. Some performances are haunting, some suspenseful, and some quite grave. Overall, this collection is exhilarating for any fan of the traditional detective story.

    Any additional comments?
Some truly great stories have been murdered by absolutely awful performances.
I m quite sure any (free) Librivox version would be superior to the very best performance in this audiobook.
    Oh dear
I could just cut and paste the review I did of the first volume. The readers do not get better, if anything it is more grating now you know what you are waiting for, a bit like waiting for the dentist to put cold water on that sensitive tooth. So here is most of that first review...Some of the greatest detective stories mangled by poor reading. Almost without fail the readers demonstrate a lack of understanding of where emphasis should be placed, to the point of implying that they do not understand the story. Accents are equally appalling. My fault for buying without listening to the sample, had I realised how bad the readers were I would not have purchased. Be warned.

    written in 1934
This story appeared in Weird Tales in 1934 and has the look and feel of a Conan story. This story is all about texture and feel. The author jumps right into the action and sends you into a dark and strange world. After the beginning it takes a long time for anything else to happen. If you like Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft or Jack Williamson then you will like this story, although I believe it took too long to tell too simple of a story. The music in this recording adds a lot to the mood of the book, my problem with it was the narration. The narrator does a lot of whispering, even though the back ground music is loud. It was hard to hear in parts. You want to listen to this in your quiet living room, not on a busy highway. I gave this a low rating because I do not care for flowery descriptive language, you on the other hand may like it. It is just a matter of taste and many people I believe will feel this is a masterpiece.

    Editorial Reviews:
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Return of Sherlock Holmes includes 13 Sherlock adventures published at the turn of the 20th century. The first collection after Holmes' alleged death, these tales bring Holmes back, sleuthing with a vengeance. Walter Covell's voice is superbly versatile. He gives each character distinct attributes, from a husky-voiced, mysterious stranger to the deep-voiced British narrator, who speaks so smoothly it is easy to enjoy his voice for the full eleven hours. Doyle and Covell work together to make this famous collection a joy for all Sherlock fans.
    Critic Reviews:
"Properly suspenseful, Covell re-creates the awestruck Doctor Watson and the scientific Sherlock Holmes in another of the sleuth's escapades. Covell gives Watson a baronial English accent and renders the unerring Sherlock Holmes in a fittingly aloof, confident tone. To be led through a criminal quagmire by so expert a voice will please any...listener who likes a good mystery." (Booklist)

    Perfect
I've listened to many readers do Sherlock Holmes and, in my opinion, this one ( Walter Covell ) is the best. Can't wait to hear his other stuff.
    A Review
Basically the stories are great but the guy that does Watson does it with a very rough voice making it very difficult to listen to on a sustained basis. If I could have heard this first I would have never bought it.
More like the end of Sherlock Holmes
This was my first selection and I decided on it because unlike some of the other Sherlock Holmes options it seems to cover all the books in the 'Return of Sherlock Holmes' anthology. Big mistake!!
Sadly within a few minutes of listening to the first story I was talking back to the voice correcting his mistakes - which were many!
I am all for equal opportunities but if you are going to get someone to read a book out loud for payment maybe either get someone who researches things like names or even has a passing knowledge of the subject matter. I'm not even sure whether this person even has English as a first language.
I disliked this book so much that I have deleted it - just in case somehow I accidentally listen to it again.. so to sum up I will be very careful to buy the more authentic Edward Hardwicke audio versions in future and remember quantity is hardly ever better than quality!!

    The Worst Book
Saying that I hated this book would be too strong, because there were a couple of worthwhile stories. I was expecting humor, nostalgia, irony, poignancy, or something give me a reason to keep listening. Instead, too many of the stories were whiny, boring and irritating. If you're looking for an amusing, thoughtful or "feel good" holiday book, this is not it.
    Still waiting for the humor...
Good grief! This is *not* the book to read for a lighthearted take on the holiday! Despite the publisher's summary suggestion that this book will make you "laugh your holiday aggravation away", the tales were depressing enough that halfway through the recording my husband made me promise not to play this in the house! Stories involving crashing cars into deer, and even into Santa himself; musings on holiday suicide; children suffering through poverty (with the mice and rats eating the decorations off their Christmas tree, no less!); more children weeping over the divorce of their parents; people miserable over the bleakness of Chanukah... my goodness, this is enough to have you reaching for the antidepressants. I suppose the bright side of this recording is that it will make you realize just how mild your holiday complaints are compared with these tales. But it's not family listening... or even recommended for anyone who's not in the mood to wallow in misery. The narration being done by the authors is a nice touch, but ths book itself is just depressing.
    A sleeper
I got this book before x-mas time to get a few laughs. However, most of the stories were dark and depressing, and most of the humor feel flat (at least to me). Some stories were better than others, but I found it an entirely forgettable book.

Our inaugural issue features many of the top writers in the country. We're proud to include a 13,000 word excerpt from an unpublished novel by Pulitzer Prize-winner Robert Olen Butler and a new recording of the seldom-seen story "In Broad Daylight", by National Book Award-winner Ha Jin. The issue also features an unreleased recording from the late James Dickey, and a new short story from Edgar-winner Tom Franklin. We have the great writer and poet Stuart Dybek making his singing debut and new poetry from Thomas Lux, one of the best poets in the country. Finally, we round it off with six new poems from South Carolina's Poet Laureate, Marjory Wentworth. All of that wrapped up with a ghost from the 19th century, Walt Whitman.

    A Great New Magazine
I received the first issue for my subscription today. I greatly appreciate this excellent method for presenting new poetry and stories. It allows me to participate in them in an intimate way that reading alone does not. I can hear the authentic voice of the poet or storyteller in most cases. Usually the only way to hear this is to attend readings at which the general atmosphere may intrude on the experience. Now I can hear the works in an environment that permits me to fully engage with the work. I can hear the author reading in the rhythms that the work demands. Thank goodness that Verb does not present actors reading. The added dramatic approach is so often completely insensitive to the rhythms of the work.
    This is a wonderful approach.
    Sharp and Fresh!
I give this book and it's sequel Vol.1, No. 2, my highest recommendation. The writing is by turns fresh, funny, serious, and whimsical. There is a great deal of variety, and the material is poetic, lyrical and literary. It is this kind of work that got me hooked on audible, along with the wonderful but now defunct (temporarily?) show "Earshot" (formerly "Ear to the Ground"). When I listen to Verb, I get the sense of sitting around a campfire hearing stories, maybe after a day of herding cattle, or maybe we're just a bunch of boyscouts on a camping trip. I get the sense of hanging out with Steinbeck having a couple of beers, or maybe swapping stories with Shelby Foote or Seamus Heaney. Perhaps I'm comparing former girlfriend stories with Updike. I am eagerly awaiting more of this kind of material and if you read this, I hope I've turned you on to something sharp!

    This is great
These are wonderful stories and the reader is one of the best I've heard.
Our 9, 7 and 5 year olds loved them and so did we.
    Children's Stories? I Think Not.
I read most of Kipling's Jungle Tales when I was eleven and enjoyed them thoroughly. Perhaps it was after listening to Kim recently in my Golden Years, catching the flavor of Imperial India, that I decided to listen to the Jungle Tales again. Good decision.
The descriptive color and exotic expression seem piercingly fresh probably because we are now so far away from them. It is as Aristotle has suggested, Art has a better way of describing reality than Truth. Listen to the stories with your children, but hear them for your self.
