Holly web is a great Arthur for young kids about 8-12. If you are like me a dog person you will love her books you can start by reading this one hope you will enjoy. Fun book for all ages!

What made the experience of listening to Never Walk in Shoes that Talk the most enjoyable?

The Roscoe Riley books are very funny. My husband and I enjoy listening to these book as much as our boys. The reader sounds just like a kid and delivers the adult geared jokes deadpan which makes them more funny. These are nice clean stories to enjoy with your kids.

The Beatrix Potter stories good, but ....Sha

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I like the performance of the stories by Shane Sody, but I wish I had purchased the stories individually. As a collection I have no control over what my child listens to and since my child hates the second story, The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit, we are unable to listen to the collection.

Was The Beatrix Potter Collection worth the listening time?

The Beatrix Potter stories are good, but my child does not like the additional stories. He especially dislikes The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit. I can figure out how to split the .aa file and remove the story from the collection. So we will not be listening to it any more (at least until I can figure out how to split the file and pull out the stories by child likes).

Didn't like it

I dont recommend this book, my son asked me to turn it off because it was to scary

Scary and narration too fast.

My 4 and 5 year old kids love the Blinky Bill TV program, but this really frightened them with talk of shootings and bad guys. At the normal speed, the narration is frantic too. I had to slow it down. It didn't engage any of us.

Classic Australian story

The narrator does an excellent job of providing an Australian voice for a classic story. The sound effects are simple and do not detract the children's attention from the plot.

Listening to the stories in the context of 2015, they are sweet. The children still laughed and enjoyed the story.

Highly recommended for dog lovers and romantic human lovers as well

The main character (Lincoln Ferris) is a man to whom life has dealt a very sorry hand of cards. Poverty, loneliness, a frustrated and distant father, a mother who is nowhere in sight. He turns to drink to ease the pain of life after he is left on his own with a failing dirt farm (more like a dust farm). A collie dog who falls from a speeding car is nursed back to health from cuts and a broken leg by Ferris. The dog adopts his savior for his own Master and worships the man as only a dog can do; until Ferris comes home one night drunk and abusive. The dog is afraid of his Master now and Ferris, afraid of returning to his old alone-ness and loneness, decides to turn away from drink for the love of his dog. He turns his life around, finally turns a profit on his farm, and gradually earns the respect of the whole town (and a high-minded local girl as well) in spite of his uneducated mountain man manners. The girl is deathly afraid of dogs and their engagement is nearly broken, but the amazing collie saves the little sister of the heroine from being killed by a speeding car. There is a fantastic plot twist at the end that brought tears to this reader's eyes and helped provide a very satisfying conclusion to the tale. I've no doubt I'll be reading this again!!!

Nice short story for dog lovers

I've selected several free books for my Kindle and this one was the most satisfying, but I am quite a dog lover so the topic was a good one!

This was really more of a short story and "novella" is even stretching it. I read the whole thing in the space of an hour or so.

Even so, I enjoyed it enough to think of coming and writing a review. While the language is old and the plot predictable, I loved the character of the dog Chum described in this book, and I liked the ending.

The story is of a man who finds a dog with a broken leg and through the course of getting to know such a fine dog, decides he needs to be a better man. I loved the premise of the dog-human bond bringing out the best in people and the end gave me a nice little laugh, which I should have expected but even so, I found this book worthwhile.

Another book by one of my favorite authors.

Albert Payson Terhune has been one of my favorite authors since I was about 8 years old. I am now 63 and the love has never diminished. He write beautiful, heartfelt books about dogs.

A sensitive exploration of "how children go bad"

This quiet novel is, I believe, one of Anne Fine's best. It's a balanced and sensitive exploration of friendship and families: what it means to destroy and what it is to be reborn.

Natalie, the protagonist of this novel, is a quiet and introverted child - a member of a busy hotel-manager's family, somewhat neglected. At the age of eight she meets Tulip, a bright, original outsider. From the first, Tulip enchants Natalie with her ideas for games and her spark of mischief. Natalie's parents encourage the friendship, knowing something about Tulip's dysfunctional family and miserable home life. Before long, Tulip has closed Natalie off from her schoolmates and family - Natalie, though, is happy in this unusual friendship. Yet as time passes, Tulip's streaks of malice and cruelty begin to show as her home life deteriorates.

Tulip and Natalie are the main characters in this drama: in the background we see parents, classmates, police officers and other figures, but these are generally sketches. That is my main quibble with this book: none of the characters except our central duo seem truly developed, or are sufficient to hold readers' interest. Perhaps this is intentional, but it annoyed me personally. In an interesting introduction to my edition, Anne Fine writes that Tulip and Natalie seemed to "spring to life" almost as soon as she began to write the novel. She notes that they show the qualities of a good author. Tulip is a compulsive and brilliant liar (and, Fine says, "what is a novel but a tissue of lies telling the truth?"). Also, Natalie "has the strength to look on something painful and not turn away". One of a writer's greatest and most needed qualities.

The Tulip Touch is an unusual tale, raising many moral questions - does true evil exist? Are we born with our personalities or are they shaped by our upbringing? What is evil? Why, as Natalie demands at the end of the novel, does a person's state have to become desperate before he or she is given help? Cleverly, Anne Fine (an educated, opinionated atheist who disbelieves in the concept of evil) makes clear her views while leaving the reader to decide his or her own answers to these difficult questions.

Four stars for the plot and characters, and an additional star for the fantastic descriptions found throughout the book.

Thought Provoking

To be honest, I didn't expect much from the book, and I still don't know why I ever read it. I had read Flour Babies by Anne Fine, and I didn't like it. I thought it was too didactic, and I thought the humor was far less than funny. The Tulip Touch didn't share any of the former's problems. It is simply an amazing book that really made me think about some of the friendships I had in high school (I just graduated).

The plot follows Natalie who is the best friend of Tulip. Tulip comes from a totally unloving and abusive family and is a trouble-maker. Gradually, Tulip's behavior begins to influence Natalie. Natalie watches herself being dragged lower and lower by Tulip. Finally, she feels she must break away.

Children and adults alike will become immersed in the performance of this classic 18th -century fairy tale as retold by Andrew Lang in 1889. Even the name of Lang's famous first collection, which contains both "Beauty and the Beast" and "Cinderella" - Blue Fairy Book - is magical.

Audible listeners will be familiar with the warm, benevolent tones of Roscoe Orman. Though Orman is best known for playing "Gordon" on Sesame Street, in this audiobook he can summon the deep, menacing voice of the Beast as well as the sweet, endearing voice of Beauty. Perfectly read masterpiece!

What a marvelous audio book!!! This is just perfect. I have been listning to this more than a hundred times, still I just enjoy it very much. Perfect for children, even for grown-ups like me, perhaps for foreingners studying English as their second langage. Just listen, and you will never be disappinted!

A classic

Would you try another book written by Lewis Carroll or narrated by Miriam Margoyles?

I might try Through the Looking Glass, as people have said to me that you don't need to enjoy Alice's Adventures to enjoy Looking Glass. I'm not sure about the narrator, she didn't quite hit the spot for me, and I was therefore never fully engaged in the story.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

If I'm honest, I only vaguely remember it, and at that point, I was sort of glad to be done with the book.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

It is a film, and I love the film. The book is not very much like that, and it felt like it dragged quite a bit, despite being so short.

Any additional comments?

It's not like I don't like classics or a slower pace - quite the contrary. But this felt pointless and uninteresting, and the writing was definitely not top shelf.

She's a rude, naughty little girl with no concern for consequences. I can see why people like the imagery but I can also see why people think Carroll was on drugs. Disappointed after all the fuss.
