Why highlight narcissism in a children's book?
I am not a fan of this series, but my five-year-old daughter is. This probably had the best story line so far that we have read of the Katie Kazoo books.
One question, though. Why does Katie have a narcissist for a best friend? What is the point of including that in a children's book? Clearly,
Suzanne is manipulative, toxic, and verges on abusive. Katie seems to shrug it all off, but narcissists aren't a joke in real life. Suzanne is the series' most developed character, and she is clearly bad news. What is the point? I suspect the author may just feel like she's a funny character to add to the story, or that she moves the plot forward. But still, what are the implications here?
What's not to like about Katie Kazoo?
Katie Kazoo Switcheroo is a wildly popular series about a girl who gets into situations when a magic wind switches her into someone else. In this 24th book Katie's best friend Suzanne wants to be the star of the fourth grade play. The trouble is, Suzanne can't carry a tune when she sings! Another friend, Miriam, gets the role. Unexpectedly and inexplicably during dress rehearsal, Katie is switcheroo-ed with Miriam. Of course Katie doesn't know the songs or the lines, and it looks like Suzanne, the understudy, may get her wish to be the star. Katie however fakes laryngitis, and soon enough she and Miriam get switcheroo-ed back to themselves. This straightforward and fast paced story is chock full of kid humor and the all too common angst of kid friendships. Katie conceives a way for Suzanne to have a spectacular entrance so she feels like a star after all.
Katie Kazoo #24
I've read most of the Katie Kazoo series, liking all of them except Love Stinks. This one was great too.
Both Suzanne and Miriam are auditioning to be in the school musical play. Suzanne is a HORRIBLE singer. Miriam is a WONDERFUL singer. When Suzanne doesn't get the lead role, Miriam does, she will do almost anything to keep Miriam from preforming, afterall Suzanne is the understudy.
Along the way Katie gets in trouble for drawing on her shoes and math homework, not exactly in trouble, but scolded. In the end she ends up making the scenery for the musical play.
The only problem I had was, I didn't feel as if Katie was the main character. It was focusing more on Miriam and Suzanne. Even when she switched into someone, it wasn't for very long. She even found a way out of the switch, meaning she got out of doing the "thing" that the "person" she "changed" into was supposed to do.
I wouldn't BUY this if I were you, maybe the library.
A Good One
The "Katie Kazoo" series is about an elementary age girl who received a granting of her wish to be someone else.
