    Title: Hidden Wisdom
Subtitle: A Guide to Western Inner Traditions
    Author: Richard Smoley, Jay Kinney
    Narrator: Ethan Sawyer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-16-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 125 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
The co-editors of Gnosis magazine explore the many esoteric traditions that Western culture has to offer. While terms from Eastern spiritual practices such as Zen, mantra, and karma have become part of our daily lexicon, the traditions of Western spirituality have been largely unexplored by people searching for non-mainstream routes to spiritual experience. But for those who identify with Western culture, Western religious traditions have their own wisdom teachings that are more suitable to their needs and expectations. Many of those searching for alternative religions are not even aware that Western civilization has always had its own traditions, which are often hidden.
In this fascinating introduction to non-mainstream Western spirituality, the coeditors of Gnosis magazine - today's leading journal of mystical spirituality - guide you through the teachings of Jung and Gurdjieff, the Kabbalah, neo-paganism, shamanism, alchemy, Sufism, and more. Explaining the history and practice of each tradition and describing its important figures, the authors present the ideas, strengths, and weaknesses of each tradition and offer a wealth of resources for those interested in pursuing these paths further.

    Interesting, enjoyable, not too deep
This was a leisurely stroll through interesting esoteric subjects. Very interesting and entertaining with good insights and a balanced perspective. It gives you just a "taste," and isn't too focused on any single tradition. I thought it was smart to start the book up with Jung.
Had to give it 5 Stars
Would you listen to Hidden Wisdom again? Why?
I had to listen to it again right after I got to the end ... it is such an easy listen while being so profound ...
    Well written and performed
The book tweaked my interests in many areas that I haven't explored before. Mr. Sawyer's interpretation of such a deep and broad ranging subject was far from the dry, lifeless norm for such a research. But then it is as evident that Smoley and Kinneys writing put the material in a well thought out modern perspective, while not overly simplifying the many contributions to the Western Occult Tradition, or the unique nuances each brought to its development. This deserves rereading, as I'm quite sure I will pick up more insight and a better understanding of this fascinating and highly complex subject matter. One of the things I most enjoyed was the treatment of western thought in relation to eastern. Nothing in the progression of wisdom can ever be done totally in a vacuum, and relationships and influences are important, even though how they may be perceived or found useful in the Western mind and culture is often quite different from that of the East. Enlightening, and thought provoking.
Very helpfull, answered alot of questions.
Loved it, good narrator, best part was the very ending, whatever you find out about life or the universe keep to yourself dont force/preach to the people, only for those who ask and are interested.
Fantastic Overview Of Christian Esoteric Thought
Would you consider the audio edition of Hidden Wisdom to be better than the print version?
Have not read the print version
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hidden Wisdom?
i enjoyed the entire listening experience.
What about Ethan Sawyers performance did you like?
    Very easy to listen to.

  • The Atonement Audiobook by W. Cleon Skousen

    Title: The Atonement
Subtitle: A Personal Search for the Meaning of the Atonement
    Author: W. Cleon Skousen
    Narrator: Tim McConnehey
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-18-13
    Publisher: Ensign Publishing
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 138 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
Latter-day Saints have a unique insight into the real meaning of the atonement of Jesus Christ, thanks to The Book of Mormon.
The key beginning place for understanding the Atonement is in Alma 34. Here, Amulek is teaching about sin and repentance, and the need for a great and last atoning sacrifice. Amulek then makes this alarming comment in verse 11: "Now there is not any man that can sacrifice his own blood which will atone for the sins of another."
It's a startling comment that flies in the face of traditional Christian understanding about the atonement. If no man can shed his blood to atone for the sins of another, then what exactly did Jesus do? Did he not shed his blood for all of us? How do we reconcile these two conflicting ideas?
As a young missionary serving in England in 1930, W. Cleon Skousen had a lot of questions about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Every Easter, young Cleon would listen to the story of the suffering the Savior had to endure and wondered why all of that torture on a Roman cross was necessary.
Some years later he arrived in the mission field at age 17 with the same questions still stirring in his heart and mind. And then one evening, Elder Skousen found himself riding the train with his mission president, Elder John A. Widtsoe, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Elder Skousen decided to ask this Apostle for help in understanding the Atonement.
From that encounter began a lifelong pursuit for knowledge that eventually resolved all conflicts and questions about the sacrifice of Jesus, and uncovered the true foundation stone for his atoning sacrifice.
The Atonement relates W. Cleon Skousen's search for understanding, and how a kind and patient Apostle of the Lord led him step by step into realms of discovery and insight that were almost lost to generations of Latter-day Saints.
    W. Cleon Skousen includes all of the source materials for his delightful and moving presentation, and shares them happily for those with a desire to embark on the same sacred journey. It is a wonderful, beautiful, and very personal search for the true meaning of the Atonement, by W. Cleon Skousen.

    Great booklet read poorly.
What did you love best about The Atonement?
The teachings in this booklet are amazing and the spirit testifies of their truthfulness.
Would you be willing to try another one of Tim McConneheys performances?
I don't know if it was the reader or the editor, but the performance seemed to me to be very poor. The reader read very quickly as if he couldn't wait to get to the end. It seemed there were no pauses at the end of paragraphs and new sections were begun almost before the last section ended. It almost seemed like it had to be read fast enough that it could all be recorded on one side of a 45 minute cassette tape.
    Any additional comments?
Buy the booklet and read that instead of listening to this on audio. At the very least buy the booklet and read along while you listen. Then you will have time to study it and also have all of the references at hand as well.
    The Atonement!!!
Well done very insightful. Something that needs to be studied and reviewed.

    Publisher's Summary:
Real-life stories of out-of-body experiences, encountering a special light, greeters from the afterlife, life reviews, tunnels, and 360-degree vision - are all part of this intriguing look at near-death experiences (NDEs) by one of the world's noted authorities, P.M.H. Atwater. Atwater shares her amazing findings, based on her sessions with more than 4,000 adults and children, and over 40 years of research; a breathtaking culmination to a successful and controversial career.
Atwater examines every aspect of the near-death phenomenon: from first-hand accounts of survivors experiencing flash forwards, waking up in morgues, and developing psychic abilities, to stunning cases of groups experiencing NDEs together. Atwater offers statistics from her findings to show the distinctive common patterns that people experience, as well as the common aftereffects and how it changed their lives.
She also explores the physiological and spiritual changes that result from near-death experiences and looks at the connections between the NDE experience and what is often called "enlightenment." Near Death Experiences provides a glimpse of not only what lies beyond the veil of our temporal existence, but points to what - or who - we really are and what we are meant to be.

    Deep and Heart felt
A very deep and interesting spiritual and scientific listen of NDE. Learned a lot. Clinical in explanations at times but the overall picture is sound, uniform and very interesting.
    Well done research
The authors extensive experience shows profoundly in this wonderful book. It was so good I had to buy the paper version.
Too much like a text book
I very much enjoy books on NDE and have enjoyed listening to some of the best of them.. This one, however, I didn't find that interesting.. It's written like a text book, half the time I realized my mind had wandered elsewhere because so much of it was just so very uninteresting.. There are interesting parts here and there, but I'd much rather listen to accounts of NDE as told by the person, not having someone tell a very short Readers Digest account of someone else's experience, then dissect it in her own opinion... Just wasn't that interesting..
The headline of the book sounds good but
What disappointed you about Near-Death Experiences?
There is no story like I expected. It was like listening to a text book without a story line. Very disappointing.
    2 Books
I loved the first half. It was amazingly enlightening. The second half was very odd and far fetched.

    Supercharge Your Life
Would you listen to Devotional Nonduality Intensive: Intention again? Why?
I am a Hawkins groupie. I listen to his audiobooks repeatedly. This one is particularly useful for helping me improve my life and develop my relationship with God. I pair this one with his audiobook about Love and the one on Alignment. Great "reads!"
What did you like best about this story?
Intention is the one thing under our individual control. The moment we say, "My intent is to bond with God and go for Enlightenment," we are on an irreversible path and our puny power is combined with the infinite power of God. What a wonderful experience!
    Any additional comments?
I found it very interesting that people under 200 on the Hawkins' Map of Consciousness experience happiness just 2% of the time. At 200, it zooms to 40% of the time because the etheric brain begins to play in one's life.
There is so much information packed into this audio that it is worth listening to multiple times.
    Enjoy!

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
Dr. Richard Carrier, world-renowned philosopher and historian, explains the four reasons he does not accept the Christian religion, describing four facts of the world that, had they been different, he would believe. Those four reasons are God's silence, God's inaction, the lack of evidence, and the way the universe looks exactly like a godless universe would, and not at all like a Christian universe would, even down to its very structure. Dr. Carrier addresses all the usual replies to these claims, in ways you might not have heard before, relying on his wide experience in debating and studying these issues all over the world for more than 15 years.
A perfect book to introduce yourself, or your friends, to why fewer educated people are embracing Christianity than ever before.
    Members Reviews:
    Logical, clear analysis
This isn't an attack, or emotional vitriol. It is based entirely on the rules of logic and presents a calm, clear, and unassailable case for atheism. I was impressed with the author's step-by-step analysis as well as the contemplation, and ultimate rejection, of Christian ideals in a careful, thoughtful manner.
    Four Foundational Pillars Demolished
As Carrier states in his introduction, he is willing and able to change his position if evidence were forthcoming. Unlike creationists and certain brands of apologists (like William Lane Craig) who steadfastly refuse to let the evidence lead them to truth but seek to force the evidence to lead them to their pre-established biases towards their particular faith. Take this quote from Craig during his debate with Mark Smith. In response to a hypothetical question,
"Dr. Craig, for the sake of argument lets pretend that a time machine gets built. You and I hop in it, and travel back to the day before Easter, 33 AD. We park it outside the tomb of Jesus. We wait. Easter morning rolls around, and nothing happens. We continue to wait. After several weeks of waiting, still nothing happens. There is no resurrection- Jesus is quietly rotting away in the tomb."
Craig's unabashedly honest reply (which, ironically, reveals the depth of his deceit, was, and I am paraphrasing:
"Yes, I would still believe. The internal witness of the holy spirit trumps any and all external evidence against Christianity."
Also, from Reasonable Faith, page 35-36:
"When a person refuses to come to Christ it is never just because of lack of evidence or because of intellectual difficulties: at root, he refuses to come because he willingly ignores and rejects the drawing of Gods Spirit on his heart. No one in the final analysis really fails to become a Christian because of lack of arguments; he fails to become a Christian because he loves darkness rather than light and wants nothing to do with God."
Carrier immediately sets himself out from his opponents by a candid description of his position and a glimpse into his profound intellectual rigour and integrity.
A quick read at under 100 pages, the evidence and reasoning provided are sound. This is no hollow chest-beating piece from a sophist attempting to sell snake-oil as diamonds. This is a clear, level-headed and fair analysis of why religion has yet to prove itself true and must spread through violence and indoctrination.

    Title: Religion for Atheists
Subtitle: A Non-Believer's Guide to the Uses of Religion
    Author: Alain de Botton
    Narrator: Kris Dyer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-06-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 184 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
The boring debate between fundamentalist believers and non-believers is finally moved on by Alain de Botton's inspiring new book, which boldly argues that the supernatural claims of religion are of course entirely false - and yet that religions still have important things to teach the secular world. Rather than mocking religions, agnostics and atheists should instead steal from them - because they're packed with good ideas on how we live and arrange our societies.
Blending deep respect with total impiety, de Botton (a non-believer) proposes that we should look to religions for insights into how to build a sense of community, make our relationships last, get more out of art, overcome feelings of envy and inadequacy, and much more. For too long, non-believers have faced a stark choice between either swallowing peculiar doctrines or doing away with consoling and beautiful rituals and ideas. At last Alain de Botton has fashioned a far more interesting and truly helpful alternative.
    Critic Reviews:
"Highly original and thought-provoking book.... de Botton is a lively, engaging writer." (Publishers Weekly)
"A new book by Alain de Botton is always a treat. De Botton is literate, articulate, knowledgeable, funny and idiosyncratic." (Forbes.com)
"[T]his book will advance amicable discussion among both believers and disbelievers." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    A valuable resource for believers
What made the experience of listening to Religion for Atheists the most enjoyable?
This book is a marvelous resource for believers into the value of their traditions, practices and values to the world in which none-of-the-above is the third largest "religion" in the world. It has helped me reclaim aspects of my faith that have been washed down the drain with the absurd belief systems that are so embarrassing. For the atheist and agnostics, this is freeing, because it allows appreciation of values, beauty, art, music, and community.
    A little thin
I was disappointed in this - de Botton's points about the non-theological comforts of religion were somewhat interesting, but it got bogged down in endless reporting on his specific experiences 'trying on' various religions.
    Amazing book
This book was absolutely amazing. I'm not even an atheist (not religious either) and this book is perfection.
I work in the field of addiction, and many people won't do 12-step programs because of spirituality. I think this book is great for people to realize that you don't need to believe in anything, but we should all at least consider doing something to become better people.
    Disappointing, Erroneous, Implausible
I've enjoyed de Botton's prior books. This one is a severe disappointment.
One of the things I've enjoyed about de Botton's work is how he brings a far-ranging understanding of canon of Western philosophy to bear on the major issues of modern life, doing so in an understandable and sometimes entertaining way. As I have no particular expertise in Western philosophy, I have always assumed de Botton was reasonably accurate in his understanding. Religion for Atheists gives me now great doubt about that.
In Religion for Atheists, de Botton discusses one subject that I have particular expertise in: Zen Buddhism. I found de Botton to be shockingly inaccurate.

    Publisher: Books on Tape
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 72 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
Who is Jesus Christ? In The Third Jesus, best-selling author and spiritual leader Deepak Chopra provides an answer to this question that is both a challenge to current systems of belief and a fresh perspective on what Jesus can teach us all, regardless of our religious background. There is not one Jesus, Chopra explains, but three.
First, there is the historical Jesus, the man who lived more than 2,000 years ago and whose teachings are the foundation of Christian theology and thought. Next, there is Jesus the Son of God, who has come to embody an institutional religion with specific dogma, a priesthood, and devout believers. And finally, there is the third Jesus, the cosmic Christ, the spiritual guide whose teaching embraces all humanity, not just the church built in his name. He speaks to the individual who wants to find God as a personal experience.
When we take Jesus literally, we are faced with the impossible. How can we truly "love thy neighbor as thyself"? But when we see the exhortations of Jesus as invitations to join him on a higher spiritual plane, his words suddenly make sense. In this way, Jesus can be seen for the universal teacher he truly is - someone whose teachings can embrace and be embraced by all of us.
    Critic Reviews:
"Jesus has now long since escaped the confines of church, Christianity and even 'religions'. Chopra's book thoughtfully presents a Jesus who is paradoxically both closer to the original and more available to post-modern people than the stained glass version." (Harvey Cox, Hollis Professor of Divinity, Harvard University)

    Release date: 03-23-11
    Publisher: Tantor Audio

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
First published in 1905, The Varieties of Religious Experience is a collection of lectures given at the University of Edinburgh in 1901 and 1902. William James was a psychologist and, as such, his interest in religion was not that of a theologian but of a scientist. In these 20 lectures, he discusses the nature and origin of religious belief.
The average believer is one who has inherited his religion, but this will not do for James's inquiry. He must find those believers who have a voracious religious faith because these people have also often experienced a number of peculiar psychological episodes, including having visions, hearing voices, and falling into trances.
Students of psychology and those interested in the mental process of belief will find these lectures informative.
    Members Reviews:
    Dense & Insightful
This series of lectures in the parlance of today can really be called, "Varieties of Spiritual Experiences". James' use of language is very stilted and formal by today's standard. This distracted from my listening as James seems to get lost in language and verbosity. I found myself often saying, " simplify, please get to the point". This being said, it is a deep, expressive and thoughtful book, by a sincere and sensitive man of deep intellect. A pedagogue at heart, his desire to take the reader/listener thru his thought process and personal seeking is sincere and enlightening.
John Pruden's reading is superb and showed his interest in James' work and never once did I get the feeling he was slogging thru a performance. Kudos to him.
This is not a one time book to listen to (or read) but to be reviewed and thought about over time with several (and patient) reviews. One's spiritual insight will be well rewarded.
    God **ahem** bless William James.
The amazing thing about James is he can write with precision and humility about something so completely intrinsic and fraught with pit falls. Most writers run at the subject with some large bias of the mystical, the . You have thousand of books written every year proclaiming their strain of Christianity, Judaism, Vegetarianism, Atheism, Mormonism, Buddhism, as being the only true and living way to view the divine AND the only mirror to view and judge ourselves. James is different. He artfully and carefully presents a measured approach to religion. He picks it apart with affection. He looks at it normatively and then he tries to look at each speck and piece through a value lens.
I believe the magic of this book is James isn't selling a belief. He isn't pimping a lifestyle. He is just curious and very very smart. And it isn't a clinical curiosity either (although his precision could be called clinical). It is a joyful curiosity. A drive to discover how we work and what really makes us tick. He wants to know and explain his hypothesis. God **ahem** bless William James. He wasn't just describing the transcendental condition of mankind, he was establishing and building a framework for others to follow for over 100 years.
feeling, testimonials, pragmatism leads no where
Testimonials belong inside a comic book and offer nothing but anecdotal curiosities for those who already believe without sufficient reason or for those who like to pretend to know things they dont really know.
