    Title: Jesus Through the Centuries
Subtitle: His Place in the History of Culture
    Author: Jaroslav Pelikan
    Narrator: Nick Sullivan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-15-10
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 16 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
One of the most highly regarded works of intellectual history of the past decade, Jesus Through the Centuries is an original and compelling study of the impact of Jesus on cultural, political, social, and economic history. Noted historian and theologian Jaroslav Pelikan reveals how the image of Jesus created by each successive epoch - from rabbi in the first century to liberator in the 19th and 20th centuries - is a key to understanding the temper and values of that age. The book is published by Yale University Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"A rich and expansive description of Jesus' impact on the general history of culture... Believers and skeptics alike will find it a sweeping visual and conceptual panorama." (John Koenig, front page, New York Times Book Review)
    Members Reviews:
    Master Modulator
Nick Sullivan demonstrates masterful modulation and inflection on the academic terrain of Jaroslav Pelikan's precise syntax, thus making the exploration more accessible.
    Story not to forget
It is a very good book carrying a good historical background. It helps the listener to understand intellectually the story of Jesus
    WHAT????
This author must be so impressed with his vocabulary and education that he loves to show it off
by constructing the longest sentences in the world that say absolutely nothing. Now that takes
real talent. After reading this book I could not really tell what his stance is on religion. I was so
amazed that I would let some friend listen to exerts from the book to see what they thought and
the answer was always the same WHAT? The biggest waist of time for me and for the author
who must have spent hours and hours formulating this book so that you the reader would be as
confessed or more confessed after reading it then before. I give this book an F for failure.

    Publisher: Urantia Foundation
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 34 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
After listening to Part 1 and Part 2 of The Urantia Book, listening to Part 3 makes you feel like an astronaut returning to earth from a long space voyage. Part 3 depicts the history of life on earth since its origin more than four-and-one-half billion years ago. It traces the story of human existence from the birth of the first two human beings nearly 993,500 years ago.
Beyond explaining our physical evolution, Part 3 describes the development of civilization, industry, government, religion, and family life. The records of human tribulation and progress indicate that we are moving toward a better world.
Highlights from Part 3 include: A scientific explanation of the origin of our solar system and our world; the stages of a divinely guided evolutionary process; the ages of fishes, birds, dinosaurs, and primates; how and why human life evolved on earth; the story of the first two human beings; the triumphs and tragedies of Adam and Eve; Abraham, Moses, Van, Lao-tse, Confucius, Ikhnaton, and other heroes of planetary history; the rise and fall of ancient civilizations; the bleak years of the Lucifer rebellion; the evolution of government and the path to world peace; principles for successful marriages and good families; how personal religion brings you lasting happiness; how the indwelling Spirit of God works to ensure your eternal survival; how to pray and worship more effectively; and how to overcome evil and suffering.

    Evolution way beyond Darwin
Part 3 of The Urantia Book totally changed my perception of history. Id heard its teaching of evolution would help me understand the thinking of men like Darwin, Leaky, Gould, and Chardin. Little did I suspect it would help me understand God, Adam and Eve, the Lucifer Rebellion, and the million year story of people on this world. I started reading Part 3 hoping to reconcile science and religion. When I finished I had a clear sense of how God divinely guides the scientific and evolutionary process.
Youll hear the history of our solar system and life on earth since its origin more than four and one-half billion years ago. The teachings trace human existence from the birth of the first two human beings nearly 993,500 years ago up to the times of Jesus. It describes the rise and fall of lost civilizations, the bleak years of the Lucifer Rebellion, and the detailed story of Adam and Eve (not the first two people on earth). Youll learn diverse information from the extinction of dinosaurs to the life of Abraham and Confucius.
Beyond plotting our physical evolution this section describes the development of civilization, industry, government, religion, and family life. It brings God up close and personal with its description of the Thought Adjuster, that part of God that lives within us. All in all, I loved Part 3 and highly recommend it for those looking for new answers.
    Overwhelmingly good.
So much information. ... it was overwhelming good, but in a good way.

    Publisher's Summary:
Contained within Theater of the Imagination are the great universal themes - tales of loss and ressurection, of love and sacrifice; of the courage to survive - yet it is as if Dr. Estes is speaking only to you.
    Members Reviews:
    Good but...
I really do like Ms. Estes and her stories and wisdom, but sometimes I wonder about them....for example, there is a story, in which she references some German words and their origin as it relates to the story , but my German husband was listening, and he didn't recognize any words she was referencing or remotely even close. Sometimes I think her gift of storytelling takes over and suddenly you have no idea what is going on and feel like you are going around and around in a circle . Without taking away much. I prefer shorter , clearer stories.
    Wonderful beyond words
    Compulsory life changing listening.
Even if your heart hasnt realised it needs to be opened- listen to this and it will open blossom and bloom.
    Loved it
Dr. Estes is a gem of story telling that rescue and clarifies much of our own nature.
I am glad I found out about her work.
    most brilliant woman on EARTH
I LOVE CLARISSA PINKOLA ESTES. She has taught me so much and inspired me so much. I LOVE HER STORIES, never has there been a more brilliant woman then her. LOVE HER! so much! I tell everyone about her. LISTEN AND RE LISTEN AND Relisten. SHE's a rockstar.
From the lap of the Goddess
Would you consider the audio edition of Theater of the Imagination, Volume II to be better than the print version?
This is a rich and interesting listening experience and I found the audio edition completely absorbing. Because of the density of the work I may have struggled to give it the kind of attention I ended up giving it had I read it instead.
What did you like best about this story?
Clarissa Pinkola Estes is a story teller par excellence. She is in my experience of a lifetime's avid consumption of stories without comparison - interesting, inspirational, thought provoking, intuitive and insightful. Theatre of the Imagination brought joy to my day and a delight in being human!
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I enjoyed the story of Skeleton Woman. So many twists and turns literally and symbolically but also some powerful insights into the nature of relationships. Insights that you might struggle to comprehend within some of relationship specific books on the market.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
My favourite parts of the book were Clarissa Pinkola Estes interpretation of the symbolic language of the stories she has such a flair for telling. They were always powerful and left me in another place, deep in thought.
    Any additional comments?
I absolutely love Theatre of the Imagination and the fact that I will revisit it over and over again. A great find but I wouldn't expect anything less of Clarissa Pinkola Estes. Her writing has had a profound effect on my outlook on life.

this man is a false prophet. This is the worst book I have ever read. he says nothing about loving neighbor with your neighbor being seen as that person who is the very most unlike yourself possible. he says nothing about oving your enemy
    Impactful

    Title: Lotus and the Cross
    Subtitle: Jesus Talks with Buddha

    Narrator: Simon Vance
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-30-08
    Publisher: christianaudio.com
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 186 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
Popular scholar Ravi Zacharias sets a captivating scene in this first in the intriguing Conversations with Jesus series. Through dialogue between Christ and Gautama Buddha that reveals Jesus' warm, impassioned concern for all people, God's true nature is explored. It's a well-priced version that you will enjoy owning.
    Members Reviews:
    a good concise comparison
Ravi does an excellent job of making concise ideas for comparison. His ability to illustrate to communicate ideas is wonderful. This is a book that focuses on a few topics which will lead to more questions, but I think that is great. It's a good story.
    Make this into a movie!
What made the experience of listening to Lotus and the Cross the most enjoyable?
The dialogue between Jesus and Buddha was fascinating. The story of the young woman trapped in the life of prostitution was heart wrenching and something I could somewhat relate too. And Visually the idea of Jesus, Buddha and this woman being ferry boated through south east asia and walking through buddhist temples i would simply love to see on a movie screen.
What other book might you compare Lotus and the Cross to and why?
The only things i can compare this to is Zacharias's other Great Conversation books.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Probably when the 4 of them are walking through the temple.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The devastating story of this young woman's life.
    Any additional comments?
I think the only that could have been better was having their action's narrated in 3rd person rather than having the characters themselves say what they were about to do or were doing in 1st person. It sounds really heavy handed and a little cheesy. And when Buddha quoted a common phrase from Ravi Zacharias himself i was like "What? Would Buddha really say that?" Fortunately these things only happened a few times and not enough to ruin the book.
    One-sided confirmation bias
Totally one-sided. Jesus wins every argument. In that sense, this is propaganda and not drama. I was hoping for a genuine discourse between the two savior figures, but this is clearly confirmation bias for literalist fundamentalist Christians. I recommend the works of Carl Jung for comparative religion. Literalism cannot function for such comparison.
Worship is in the core of human worth.
I loved it! This is like the 3rd time I've listened to this audio book and each time it leaves a sense owe and gratitude to God who chose Dr. Ravi to witness to my spirit and strengthen my faith and commitment to God. And thanks to Vince for such wonderful lecture. Praise be to God, my Father!
    Insightful, Creative
It's impressive that an author could capture such imposing figures as Jesus and Buddha so accurately. Not only was this book informative, it was creative and enjoyable. Check it.

    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 302 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
Through the ages, mankind has pursued questions of faith in something beyond the world of ordinary experience. Is there a God? How can we explain the presence of evil? Do humans, or human souls, live on after death? Is there a hell? The following lectures examine these eternal questions and present the most compelling arguments for and against God's existence, the seeming conflicts between religion and science, and the different truth-claims of the world's most popular religions. By delving into the major characteristics of world religions, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, mankind's association with the many different varieties of religious practice is brought to light. Above all, Faith and Reason: The Philosophy of Religion lays the groundwork for a rational approach to pursuing questions of faith - and at the same time provides a better understanding of religion's ongoing importance in the realm of human experience.
    Members Reviews:
Not without a perspective, but very good
Contrary to the person who thinks Prof. Kreeft was too politically correct and not pro-Catholic enough, I think this was a very balanced presentation from someone who is clearly "pro-religion", i.e., who believes in God. He doesn't discount the "other side" because he acknowledges that there are perspectives very much worth considering. This is supposed to be like a university course, requiring open-minded thoughtfulness, and it succeeds in that. Prof. Kreeft is engaging, smart without being condescending, and accessible without being too cute. I think he is an unusually calm, intelligent voice on the side of religious belief.
    A Plus....excellent!
The content is excellent, and the audio quality is very good.
My best friend is a science teacher and agnostic. I am a Christian and I teach English. Both of us have taught for about 30 years, and we both are curious about reality (whatever it is) and we both want to know more than we now know.
Both of us love this audio. We find that Dr. Kreeft has presented his discussion in a reasonable and balanced fashion. His arguments are proper and structured very well.
I will listen to this book several times. I have finished hearing it once so far, and that led me to purchase six print books of Dr. Kreeft's. I would welcome the chance to purchase more of his audiobooks.
While Dr. Kreeft is a Christian, he does not let his faith keep him from a balanced, logical discussion of the use of reason in faith issues.
    Highly thought-provoking
I am surprised that some reviewers found this audiobook to be boring; I found it to be quite riveting. It consists of a course with 14 lectures, not a book with 14 chapters, so perhaps this format was less familiar to them?
Professor Kreeft compares and evaluates various religious beliefs, including arguments made for and against God's existence, beliefs about immortality, and the natural of religious experiences.

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
Challenging the conclusions of such books as Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion and Daniel C. Dennett's Breaking the Spell, this book will be of interest to listeners on both sides of a hot-button issue at the meeting place of science and faith.
    Critic Reviews:
"This conclusion is beyond science. Beauregard argues well in clear, readable prose, avoiding highly technical language." (Library Journal)
"This book serves as a lively introduction to a field where neuroscience, philosophy, and secular/spiritual cultural wars are navoidably intermingled." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    interesting topic, but frustrating listen
This was an interesting topic, but often frustrating to listen to. The author includes many (too many?) quotations from other experts in the field. When reading the book, a quote is immediately obvious because it is indented. However, in the audiobook you don't realize you're hearing a quote until it's over and is attributed. This becomes very distracting because the quotes are long and will often argue against the author's thesis. The producers could have improved this by having a different narrator read the quotes, or by making the attribution before, instead of after the quote. I realize this sounds like a trivial complaint, but it was irritating enough to prompt me to write my first, and possibly only, review.
    Interesting read
The authors discuss various research, including their own, on the brain and spiritual experiences, and in the process poke fun at modern theories that there is no mind and no free will. Most likely, neither science nor philosophy will ever settle the issue for good. However, the book is a good read, particularly for those who are skeptical of the viewpoint that all of our experiences are produced solely by chemical reactions and electrical activity in the brain.
    Tough listen
It seems as if his audience was ment to be other professors in his field. He spends too much time discounting the "materialist" point of view and not enough time supporting his own. Also, as an audio book, I'm not sure who the quotes are attributed to as some seem to mention the persons name ahead of the quote and others after the quote. This is especially true if there are a number of quotes in a row.
The bottom line is that people that are interested in listening/reading this book already believe in the non-materialist view when it comes to the "mind".
    insightful. informative.
A well thought out and researched answer to dogmatic, evangelical materialism that doesn't fall into the fallacies of religious dogmatism. Long chapters ten to make the work difficult glisten to, but the content makes it worth the effort. The narrator's performance is excellent; entertaining and varied.
    More rhetoric than science.
The author spent more time in arguing rhetorically against non-religious arguments than is necessary. He spends only one chapter on his own studies, and half of that chapter was spent on the history of the order, not on the results of his study.
