    Publisher's Summary:
A devoted city dweller, Cornelia Brown surprised herself when she was gripped by the sudden desire to head for an idyllic suburb. Though she knows she's made the right move, she approaches her new life with trepidation and struggles to forge friendships. Cornelia's mettle is quickly tested by judgmental neighbor Piper Truitt, the embodiment of everything Cornelia feared she would find in suburbia. A saving grace soon appears in the form of Lake, and Cornelia develops an instant bond with this warm yet elusive woman.
As their individual stories unfold, the women become entangled in a web of trust, betrayal, love, and loss that challenges them in ways they never imagined, and that ultimately teaches them what it means for one human being to belong to another.

    Entertaining but shallow
This book reads like the audio version of "Desperate Housewives", with its benign suburban setting, the musical, gossipy tone of the narrator and the intermittent soundtrack that transitioned the scenes. The story was pleasant enough but everything was just too perfect and the author never really effected the transition of the shallow, loathsome Piper Truitt into a caring individual with any real depth. In short, everything in this book was just too "beautiful and wondrous", with its fairy tale narrator, to be believed.
    Readable
Make no mistake, this is not chick lit! Shes a great fiction writer, and it is not a cheesy sequel. Corniela and Teo have moved to the suburbs and me some interesting people, definitely interesting characters, there is some reference to Claire from the last book, but this is a great book from a more mature author!
    heh,
it was ok. a little cheesy. sort of Pollyanna. not sure that I will get anymore of here books. in think it was the reader's voice. kind of fake aristocrat voice that started to grate after a while.
    BORING!!!!!
What disappointed you about Belong to Me?
This book had no plot whatsoever. It was so painful to listen to because it went absolutely nowhere. I found it impossible to even remotely care about any of the characters. Whatever you do save 15 hours of your life and don't bother with this book.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Nope this book was the most painful thing I have attempted in a long time and with 5 hours left I decided those are 5 hours I will never get back if I try and press on.
    Overall good
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I enjoyed the story, but did not always agree with the narrators interpretation of the characters' feelings within the dialogue. Unfortunately, the music at certain chapters of the book was beyond annoying. Especially when the music played while the narrator read the story. I probably would not have finished the book if I did not have the paper version of the book as well.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    no
    Any additional comments?
no music in books, please, especially in such a loud volume compared to the reading.

Never too old to learn or to love
I do like Dorothea Benton Frank's books. One of the most enjoyable things about them is the sweet as syrup southern drawl, and it is done just right. This tale of generations of one family growing up in the same family home exposes each of the homes occupants, warts and all. And time has not been kind to the family, not due in small part to the 94 year old grandmother's lack of confidence in her own daughter as a child and young woman. Isn't that always the way, though? We all have unhealed wounds, a big ole hole in our hearts from what we needed and never got . . . this audio book, happily doesn't try to "fix" all that . . . but deals with it in the here and now . . . by sending them a Pearl at Christmas time.
Get's you into the spirit of Christmas
I have read ALL of Dorothea Benton Franks books. I have enjoyed all of her books, except, "Full of Grace". I have listened to one of her 2007 book's the title was something like, "Island of the Mango Sunset". The narrator for that story was not good. However,
Celia Weston must be from "the low country" because in "The Christmas Pearl" she gets the charming, low country speech perfect. I've listened to the story 3 times just to hear the narrator's beautiful ennuciation of low country drawl. "The Christmas Pearl" is a wonderful story, typical Dorothe Benton Frank. I believe this will become a classic Christmas Story, to be LISTENED to year after year. This is truly a must listen! Deborah.
You'll Want To Bake Cookies During This One--
--And at about 3 1/2 hours, it seems like baking/cooking would be the perfect activity to engage in whilst listening to The Christmas Pearl.
Sure, it's a tad predictable, which is kinda what I love about holiday books: Chaos, smallness of soul, a lack of hope... all morphing into warmth, love, and a willingness to experience the joy of being with others.
Theodora has such a sweet Southern charm, is so simply childlike even while she's being baldly honest and scathing about her family's shortcomings that I enjoyed wallowing in the syrup of the story. And Celia Weston does a delightful job in bringing not only her but the whole family and the gifted visitor to life.
Truly, I wished I was pouring out flour, sugar for cookies, and cutting butter into tossed flour for biscuits while I was enjoying this little Christmas book. A warm kitchen often goes with a warm heart!
    Magical
This was just the story I needed to generate a little Christmas spirit. It hits all the right notes: Nostalgia, Love, humor, imagination and the eternal hope that the Christmas season evokes without being too sappy. The narrator is delightful, I would swear she was just sitting next to me telling me her life story and the comeuppins her family gets. I think I will listen to this one every year from now on, I have a fondness for Christmas stories and this is my favorite so far.
    Absolutely loved it
This book takes you on a journey! Christmas in the south with the old traditions. It reminded me of how my family prepared for Christmas leading up to the holiday.

    Title: Adverbs
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Daniel Handler
    Narrator: Oliver Wyman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-06-06
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 40 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
I am Daniel Handler, the author of this book. Did you know that authors often write the summaries that appear on their book's dust jacket? You might want to think about that the next time you read something like, "A dazzling page-turner, this novel shows an internationally acclaimed storyteller at the height of his astonishing powers."
Adverbs is a novel about love, a bunch of different people, in and out of different kinds of love. At the start of the novel, Andrea is in love with David, or maybe it's Joe, who instead falls in love with Peter in a taxi. At the end of the novel, it's Joe who's in the taxi, falling in love with Andrea, although it might not be Andrea, or in any case it might not be the same Andrea, as Andrea is a very common name. So is Allison, who is married to Adrian in the middle of the novel, although in the middle of the ocean she considers a fling with Keith and also with Steve, whom she meets in an automobile, unless it's not the same Allison who meets the Snow Queen in a casino, or the same Steve who meets Eddie in the middle of the forest.
It might sound confusing, but that's love, and as the author, me, says, "It is not the nouns. The miracle is the adverbs, the way things are done." This novel is about people trying to find love in the ways it is done before the volcano erupts and the miracle ends. Yes, there's a volcano in the novel. In my opinion a volcano automatically makes a story more interesting.
A dazzling page-turner, this novel shows an internationally acclaimed storyteller at the height of his astonishing powers.
    Critic Reviews:
"This lovely, lilting book is a kind of After School Special for adults that dramatizes love's cross-purposes with panache." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Great writing style/narrator combination
The first time I listened to this book I just thought it was so-so. I really enjoy Daniel Handlers writing style in the unfortunate events series and that's why I tried this book. Some of the stories were sort of unpleasantly vulgar in a sexual way, but only a few parts really. After the first time I listened I decided to listen again and now I'm on my 3rd or 4th time through. It just keeps growing on me. Even though a lot of the stories are absurd it really is one of the best descriptions of how love is that I've ever read. Also this narrator did an incredible job with it, the timing is perfect. Life really isn't about the nouns, it's the adverbs...
Short Stories for the Non-Short Story Reader
Handler's book of short stories is so interconnected that it reads like a novel. Every word of it is pure, self-effacingly narrative gold. I listened to this on the way to work and found my self pulling every cliche and laughing at some moments, crying at others. Anyway, you'll never regret listening to these stories.
    not what i expected
If you're turning to this book as an escape from the pain you might be going through due to the loss of someone close to you, this may not be the book for you. What begins as slightly edgy and somewhat derainged train-of-thought comedy turns into a very realistic and poignant portrayal of terminal illness. This book is much more than it first appears to be, but it was not what I needed and expected it to be.

T2 Trainspotting was previously published as Porno.
Now a major film directed by Danny Boyle reuniting the cast of Trainspotting.
Years on from Trainspotting Sick Boy is back in Edinburgh after a long spell in London. Having failed spectacularly as a hustler, pimp, husband, father and businessman, Sick Boy taps into an opportunity which to him represents one last throw of the dice. However, to realise his ambitions within the Adult industries, Sick Boy must team up with old pal and fellow exile Mark Renton. Still scheming, still scamming, Sick Boy and Renton soon find out that they have unresolved issues to address concerning the unhinged Begbie, the troubled, drug-addled Spud, but, most of all, with each other.
    Critic Reviews:
"Welsh has an uncanny talent for dialogue, and his writing is often diamond sharp." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
More skagboy fun, less depth than Trainspotting
What did you love best about Porno?
Spending more time in the minds of the skagboys is fun, but this work seems to lack the insight and depth that made Welsh's earlier work blossom. It felt like the attention shifted greatly from some of the complex and three dimensional characters, to some of the flat, less contemplative characters. Perhaps I just enjoyed Mark Renton's outspoken philosophical rants, but he is more on the periphery of this work.
What does Tam Dean Burn bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Tam Dean Burn does an amazing job. I enjoy his delivery, and believe it really helps, as I sometimes am able to gather the context/ meaning of the heavy dialect/ slang. I'm looking forward to hearing more of his work with Irvine Welsh.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Daniel "Spud" Murphy's introspection and attempt to make something of his life are both heartfelt, and sad, as he begins to reflect on his life, and move forward.
    Any additional comments?
This is in regards solely to the audiobook platform, but there was a huge decline in quality.
    1) It seems like this book is only available in an abridged form (although I'm not sure how much was altered).
    2) The recording itself also had some glaring issues. It was more muffled than Trainspotting, and I found myself having to turn the volume up more to try and listen clearly. Also there was distracting background noise throughout, (someone else in an office, possibly?).
    3) The chapters were not properly edited, so 1-2 seconds are abruptly chopped off at the end of each chapter, sometimes mid-sentence.
    Cuts are jumpy
Transitions into new chapters are abrupt and jumpy. Might make you think that something has skipped. Love the narration, though!
    Terrible editing
Have you listened to any of Tam Dean Burns other performances before? How does this one compare?
Tam Dean Burn's narration and the editing of Trainspotting and Skagboys was awesome. I expected the same from Porno. Burn's performance was probably amazing again but the sound quality was below par, the narration speed was too fast, and the overall editing was so poor that if I had picked this book as my first experience with him, I wouldn't have listened to anything else he did. A shame really.
    Enjoyed this syory
Very good author. Very good characters. Well worth the money in my opinion. The narrator is very good too .
    Great fun, leaves you hanging...

    Extraordinary Story
I consider this book "a sleeper." A book I decided to purchase on a whim, and what a story! The main characters might be considered 'losers' in society but are true heroes. A derelict lawyer, a discarded child, and a fabled cat that binds the lawyer and child together in a horrific yet uplifting tale. Even at the darkest moments of the book, one pulls for them to win. I laughed and cried during this listen. And what a marvelous narration! I loved every word.
    Unusual
A novel about an alcoholic and a boy is one I would usually pass without a second glance. Fortunately, I was already a Bryce Courtenay fan. This touching novel is not to be missed. Humphrey Bower does his usual outstand job presenting each character in his/own voice. Five stars!
Bryce Courtenay & Humphrey Bower do it again!
I loved MF's Cat and its wonderful characters - Billy, Ryan and of course Trim, the cat. Never have I laughed and cried so much in one book. Powerful. A special thanks to the author and to the incredible Humphrey Bower. This is my 7th Courtenay novel and I can't say enough about the author and the narrator.
BC takes on two most difficult and delicate social issues - alcoholism and pediaphila. He does it with great sensitivity as well as ruthless reality. This is a 'must read'.
COME ON AUDIBLE.COM, BRING ON "THE PERSIMMON TREE"!
    I like the cat
This book has two stories in one, both are good but both also some have slow moments. They drag for awhile and then come back to life. I enjoyed the characters and the narration. I was a derelict for several years after I left high school and an alcoholic while in my junior and senior high school years. My experience helped me relate to the characters and the Salvation Army (my favorite charity). I also enjoyed the vocabulary. I give this book three stars for being an average, good book.
    Go Ahead Spoil Yourself
Pleeease take the plunge and comit a wonderful experience. Superb story with the extremely talented Humphrey Bower. I am going to be sad when this story comes to an end. But hey, I'll just get another Bryce Courtenay novel narrated by Humphrey. Okay, now I'm not sad any more. AAAAnd according to Bryce's web site he is working on a new book. And this one had better make it to Audible.

    Good old Southern story
If you like southern fiction, you probably can't go wrong with this author. Several colorful characters make up the story, and it has a tinge of melancholy throughout. It's definitely not a feel good or picker upper sort of story, but it'd fit the bill for old fashioned southern storytelling.
    Narration was very good.
    Worth The Trip
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. An everyday story but told in a very novel way. No suspense but rather a study in character.
What did you like best about this story?
The way it is told through the eyes of the killer, the victim, the wife of the killer and the defense attorney.
What about Tom Parkers performance did you like?
His easy going manner and his knowledge of when to pause a second for the listener.
If you could rename Follow Me Down, what would you call it?
    What Did I Just Do?
    Any additional comments?
This was my first Shelby Foote novel. I have read and listened to his Civil War histories and it is interesting to hear his work in a different genre.

The storyline is very good but the abridgment leaves something to be desired. Much is lost in the translation. It was confusing-especially between the last two chapters.
Save your credits and skip The Program
Gregg Hurwitz is one of my most favorite authors...but even he is capable of a lemon every now and then, and this is his lemon. I'm so grateful that my love affair with him started with They're Watching and not with The Program because I'd never have given any of his other books a shot. That would have been tragic, which is also an apt word to describe The Program. Halfway through it, I finally put an end to my suffering and moved on to something else. Sorry, Gregg, but this book isn't worthy of you.
Happy to Have Tried Hurwitz's Books

I like Greg Hurwitz books, as I find he does a good job of creating characters.

What about Dylan Bakers performance did you like?
He interpreted the characters well. His voices, as he interpreted the characters, almost created physical descriptions for me. I found this strange & rather fascinating, as this has happened only rarely, for me.

    Mysterious, bizarre
A couple visits a famous tourist city (unnamed in the novel) and become victims of a deranged man's fantasies. Much of the novel is written with oblique descriptions, but there is nevertheless a sense of dark suspense that builds. I would not say this is one of McEwan's finest novels. If you're a fan, it's definitely worth the read!
    Very Odd
I'm really not sure what to make of this one. If I hadn't known from the reviews and description that something dreadful happens, I would have thought the first three-fourths of the book to be dull and pointless. Since I did know, it did have a kind of creepy suspense, waiting for the axe to fall.
However, when it did finally fall, it was kind of anticlimactic. The whole book has a surreal and detached feel-- good for building suspense, not so good for really feeling the horror when it happens. That same detachment made it hard to really get involved with the characters, which also lessened the impact of the climax. At the end, I blinked, scratched my head, and said "Hunh. Well... I guess it's time for the next selection!"
It's short, so if you like odd stories and subtle horror it might be worth the risk. Just don't expect too much.
All Writers Have to Learn Somewhere
An unbelievable story that was pretty much a waste of time. "Atonement" was a true triumph, but this story written going up the mountain is as disappointing as the ones written going down.
    Weird and pointless - almost
I tried listening to this book when I first got it, but for some reason I didn't remember, couldn't get into it. I went back through my library and realized I still had not read it. "It's only 4 hours, no big deal!" Yeah, wow. This book takes forever to get to any point. Nothing leading up to the end is important (not really). I kept waiting for something to happen. I thought it would be more... erotic or sexual, but it's really not. It makes no sense. Maybe it's the genre and I'm just missing something or not interested, but my rating is a 1 star and that's only because a. it's the lowest I could give, and b. the narrator would probably be good in another book whose writing doesn't put you to sleep.
