    Hard to Like
Listened to this as an abridged audio and the narrator did a good job, far better than the story and plot. Hate to give low marks, but though the writing was solid, this book had the nastiest set of characters I have ever read or in this case, listened to. And so many of them, too. Usually it's just one nasty character per book, maybe two. Not all of them. =( The heroine was just plain vindictive and difficult to like. Why wait 20 years for revenge? Plus, the ploys she pulled didn't seem possible. The hero was a plain and simple jackass of Olympic proportions, and his wife was just plain evil with a capital E. She should have had horns and a pitchfork. The only nice people in the story are the heroine's son and a secondary character who develops a hard-to-believe crush at first sight on the heroine. This one was labeled unforgettable in the blurb. It was...minus the un-
Unlikeable characters, bad story, and too many things left hanging.
I have rarely felt motivated to write a bad review for a book, but this book was painful to finish. The only reason I kept reading was that because of the synopsis, I kept hoping the main character would redeem herself. I waited in vain. Additionally, some of the plot lines that I hoped would help the book end on a positive note were instead left completely hanging and unresolved at the end. I cannot recommend this book to anyone.
Nearly every character in this book is self-centered, morally bankrupt, and unlikeable. And most remain unlikeable throughout. The main character, who you are presumably supposed to be rooting for is a character who suddenly abandons years of being a responsible, caring person for petty revenge that doesn't even make sense. Except that her revenge isn't petty at all and involves awful things that in real life would bring hefty prison sentences, though we're assured in the book that even if she gets caught, she'd do a couple years of jail time.
    The story line is ridiculous.

    Publisher's Summary:
A heartbreaking affair, an unsolved murder, an explosive romance: welcome to summer on the Cape in this powerful debut.
Seven summers ago, Marcella Atkinson fell in love with Cecil McClatchey, a married father of two. But on the same night their romance abruptly ended, Cecil's wife was found murderedand their lives changed forever. The case was never solved, and Cecil died soon after, an uncharged suspect.
Now divorced and estranged from her only daughter, Marcella lives alone, mired in grief and guilt. Meanwhile, Cecil's grown son, Jed, returns to the Cape with his sister for the first time in years. One day he finds a woman's bathing suit buried in a closet - a relic, unbeknownst to him, of his father's affair - and, on a hunch, confronts Marcella. When they fall into an affair of their own, their passion temporarily masks the pain of the past, but also leads to crises and revelations they never could have imagined.
In what is sure to be the debut of the season, The Swimming Pool delivers a sensuous narrative of such force and depth that you won't be able to press pause.

Filled With Despair, Living Within A Facade
Holly LeCraw has written her first novel filled with people in despair. It is not always apparent, nor do the characters involved understand the despair and depression surrounding them. This is a novel of people living within a facade.
Jed, a lawyer, has become involved with his father's mistress. He is living with his sister, Callie and her husband, Billy and children in Cape Cod. This was a summer home from happier times, or were they? Something seems not quite right. Toni, the daughter of Jed's new lover is helping out this summer. Marcella, Toni's mom and Jed's new lover and mistress of Jed's father, lives in Connecticut, near the beach. Jed's mother was murdered and his father died in a sudden accident. Those are the essentials, except for Anthony, Toni's father and Marcella's ex-husband. There you have it. Sounds convoluted, does it not?
What Holly LeCraw has going for her, is her writing. She is a gifted writer and the story flows so well. Each character is drawn out so well that we feel like we are just getting to know them. The settings are so well depicted, we feel like we are there. The sun, the sand, the surf, the beach, the swimming pool and the old weathered homes of old Cape Cod. The story moves from one setting to the next, and the characters with some insight move from one place to the next. Told in many flashbacks, the story makes more sense as the novel proceeds. In fact, I liked this novel.
Holly LeCraw has some important things to say. Her novel is an important start. Keep on, keepin' on.
    Recommended. prisrob 04-25-10
    Love and Betrayal
I didn't think of this book as a beach read at all. In fact when I read the back cover for it, I didn't get the impression that it was supposed to be. The book has all of the elements for it though; murder, secrets, betrayals and forgiveness.
Jed and Callie have a summer home on Cape Cod, the home belonging to their parents. Their mom, Betsy, was murdered and it is suspected that their dad,Cecil, committed suicide. They both have had trouble dealing with these deaths and the circumstances.
Anthony and Marcella are a divorced couple. Marcella had an affair with Cecil that eventually brought about an end to her marriage with Anthony.

    Publisher's Summary:
Milo Burke, a development officer at a third-tier university, has "not been developing": after a run-in with a well--connected undergrad, he finds himself among the burgeoning class of the newly unemployed. Grasping after odd jobs to support his wife and child, Milo is offered one last chance by his former employer: he must reel in a potential donor--a major "ask"--who, mysteriously, has requested Milo's involvement. But it turns out that the ask is Milo's sinister college classmate Purdy Stuart. And the "give" won't come cheap.
Probing many themes--or, perhaps, anxieties--including work, war, sex, class, child rearing, romantic comedies, Benjamin Franklin, cooking shows on death row, and the eroticization of chicken wire, The Ask is a burst of genius by a young American master who has already demonstrated that the truly provocative and important fictions are often the funniest ones.
    Editorial Reviews:
How is it that Sam Lipsyte has not killed himself? This is a writer whose deeply intelligent sense of black comedy is a direct descendant from the bitter wellsprings of David Foster Wallace and John Kennedy Toole, except firmly anchored in realism. Like an extended outtake from Brief Interviews with Hideous Men or A Confederacy of Dunces that substitutes the corporate end of academia for New Orleans, Lipsytes third novel is destined to delight in a way his previous two books did not. In fairness to Lipsyte, probably his initially bright career trajectory was cut short by the fact that his first book was released on 9/11, so reviewers had other things to think about. But it is precisely his experience with this type of tragic coincidence that informs the lives of his characters so well.
Lipsytes double-duty as narrator for his book leaves us doubly blessed. Told from the perspective of Milo Burke, a finder of funding at a mediocre school in New York, Lipsytes uncanny ear for dialogue really shines as Milo tries to remain respectably under the radar of a militaristic dean, sufficiently snooty in the company of an ideas tycoon with whom he went to art school, convincingly authoritative under the scrutiny of his toddler of terror, and attentively supportive to his cheating wife. Once upon a time, Milo was going to be a successful painter. But Milo is now basically an over-educated drone just trying to eke out a mildly respectable and not-too-schmucky sustainable life for himself and his crumbling family. His comparatively big break comes when an old acquaintance is interested in making a hefty donation to Milos school. If Milo can make it happen, hell be a hero. But Milo is not good at making things happen, or at being a hero. He is, at best, a wonderful loser.
The cadences of the assorted conversations going on in this book are so absolutely real that youll wonder if Lipsyte has been spying on you. He perfectly captures the despairing dialogue between a parent about to crack and a child who oscillates between naive violence, ceaseless rhetorical questioning, and practical selfishness. These traits are interestingly mirrored in the witty back and forths between Milo and Don. Don is the secret love child of Milos old acquaintance, and keeping Don happily under wraps is what Milo will have to do in exchange for securing his big donation.

"Moriarty exposes the underbelly of family strife in this coming-of-age college drama set near Lawrence, Kans. One day, Veronica Von Holten is happy, med-school bound, in love with her boyfriend and not far from her supportive family. Then her father finds another man in the bed he shares with his wife of 26 years. As a messy divorce ensues, Veronica struggles to keep her own life in check while her mother's unravels.... Moriarty...delves into this realistic but narrow world with an inviting honesty and creates a cast of vivid and flawed characters that will hold readers rapt with a queasy sense of unease." Not Moriarty's best, buy...
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This is tough. it is not Moriarty's best work, but she has such a gift for describing everyday life in such a way as to make it relatable.
It's a welcome addition to my library only so far as to nearly complete my Moriarty novels, but on its own there's something missing, or maybe too much present; I can't put my finger on it.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Both of these narrators are not my favorites. Dialogue is not their strong suits, and there is so much dialogue in this book that a better narrator may have improved the book.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Actually, it would make a great drama pic!
    Any additional comments?
This is not Moriarty's best work, but she set the bar high with her debut "The Center of Everything". But the book by itself seems to be too much bad stuff happening to the characters, though ultimately it depicts the changing dynamics of adult-child relationships quite well.

    Publisher's Summary:
When Gil Castle loses his wife in the Twin Tower attacks, he retreats to his family's sprawling homestead in a remote corner of the Southwest. Consumed by grief, he has to find a way to live with his loss in this strange, forsaken part of the country, where drug lords have more power than police and violence is a constant presence. But it is also a world of vast open spaces, where Castle begins to rebuild his belief in the potential for happiness - until he starts to uncover the dark truths about his fearsome grandfather, a legacy that has been tightly shrouded in mystery in the years since the old man's death.
When Miguel Espinoza shows up at the ranch, terrified after two friends were murdered in a border-crossing drug deal gone bad, Castle agrees to take him in. Yet his act of generosity sets off a flood of violence and vengeance, a fierce reminder of the fact that, while he may be able to reinvent himself, he may never escape his history.
Searingly dramatic, bold, and timely, Crossers is Caputo's most ambitious and brilliantly realized novel yet.
    Critic Reviews:
"At first glance, this multifarious book skirts country familiar to readers of McCarthy or McMurtry, but Caputo's west supersedes elemental cowboys and lone justice with the malaise of post-9/11 America and the violence of the Mexican desert - as gruesome as in Iraq - frothing with moral ambiguity and fraught with complicity." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Decent book, poor narrator.
Caputo usually has a knack for creating interesting characters. In this attempt, though, he just doesn't have enough for them to do. There's little suspense, and the love interest is just dull.
It's the narrator that really sinks the boat, though, with a lilting rhythm that bears little relation to the substance, kind of like being read to by Captain Kirk...
Excellent story- fitting for 2010 news
The author gives an accurate unbiased look into life past and present along the US/Mexican border through a fictious story. I know people who live in border areas who have had similiar experiances. The narration is very slow, so I recommend to up the "speed button"
A good story with timely topics
Crossers is a story about the border between the US and Mexico that bounces back from a historical context to the present. Interesting to see how we never escape the past, even though it may not be us in the present who makes the transgressions. The characters are vivid, at times a little too vivid.
I recommend the book but not for young ears.

    Good Movie - Better Book
FOXFIRE by Joyce Carol Oates is a haunting tale of the relationships developed among groups of outcasts and "leftovers," marginalized by the established mainstream. The subtitle is "Confessions of a Girl Gang," and that is exactly what is told. The story is set in upstate New York but could be anywhere in American suburbia. The group of girls gang together, at first out of circumstance, then survival, and finally love. Despite the mostly pathetic personality of the characters, they become endearing and fit nicely into the world Oates has created. I hesitate to recommend FOXFIRE to those unfamiliar with Oates' pastiche narrative style and penchant for (mostly mild) violence in her stories, but this did grip me and I considered it a "page turner."
The movie version is only loosely based on the novel, with more differences than similarities. Even with the successful cult following, which is at least partly due to Angelina Jolie's subsequent fame, the book outshines the movie's comparative mediocrity.
    Five Stars
    Very good book.
    i love this book
Just don't go into it expecting it to be just like the movie because its not. Its set during a very different time. The characters are far more raw and at times unlikeable. The movie was a sugar coated fabrication shadowed after this story. Don't get me wrong. I love the movie but I keep them very separate.

These characters are all real they are either you or your daughter or your friend and you understand the times and the hardships and why they feel they need to act the way they do because she makes you one of them. `It burns and burns and never looks back'. Presidential Power, a short course
Would you consider the audio edition of First Family to be better than the print version?
The reason I chose the abridged version of this book is because all of Baldacci's books that I have heard before were good, but I always wanted to flip ahead and cut some of his self-adulation. Yes, he is a good and intelligent writer, but I don't need laborious reminders of that in each book. That being said, the abridged version is probably as good as or better than the book.
What did you like best about this story?
The story moved quickly and had well thought out side stories and subplots.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration was excellent, but the sound effects were not welcome, especially while driving.
Who was the most memorable character of First Family and why?
King is the most memorable character. He may not be the last Boy Scout, but he is a credit to the club.
    Any additional comments?
Baldacci has taught me that less can mean more. He is an excellent author and I look forward to reading all of his works. I will, however, choose only the abridged versions from now on. Most authors are better unabridged; Baldacci is better abridged.
Like most Baldacci, sort of good.
To those of you who haven't listened to or read David Baldacci, this novel, like most his others, has a story line that is just good enough to keep you interested. Not great, but good. I didn't really gain affection for any of the characters and I almost didn't care how it would end. There is some action, a little girl is kidnapped but you never learn that much about her, there's a bad guy but he isn't really all the bad, and on and on. Ron McLarty does a good job on an average story line.

    True Story
I loved this true life story of a boy and his path to enlightenment.
Book two is all screwed up there are parts that are in different order and is annoying.
    Great Read
I typically read crime novels or suspense thrillers. This was a nice change of pace to laugh out loud in the car while listening. And I have to disagree about the narrator. I loved his delivery, especially his French accent.
    Untitled
Ignoring the fact that I did not find the book very funny, this recording is also missing large chunks. At the end of chapters words will cut out mid sentence and then in the next chapter events have transpired that you did not hear.
    The Essence of Male Adolescence
This ably narrated book captures the highs and lows, the fantasies (of perception and imagination), and the mindset of the male adolescent. No matter its temporal or socioeconomic setting, the novel will strike a chord with any man over 21 and any woman with brothers or sons in that difficult age.
Entertaining audio book with a couple faults...
As other listeners noted, parts 2 and 3 do have a couple problems where sections of the text are not included, creating a disjointed story.
However, I thought the reader did an excellent job (he does sound nerdy for a teen, but the main character is nerdy). It's a fun listen, and priced well, making the faults bearable.
