    loved it!
Set against the powerful lakeshore landscape of northern Minnesota, Safe from the Sea is a heartfelt novel in which a son returns home to reconnect with his estranged and dying father thirty-five years after the tragic wreck of a Great Lakes ore boat that the father only partially survived and that has divided them emotionally ever since. When his father for the first time finally tells the story of the horrific disaster he has carried with him so long, it leads the two men to reconsider each other.
Meanwhile, Noah's own struggle to make a life with an absent father has found its real reward in his relationship with his sagacious wife, Natalie, whose complications with infertility issues have marked her husband's life in ways he only fully realizes as the reconciliation with his father takes shape.
Peter Geye has delivered an archetypal story of a father and son, of the tug and pull of family bonds, of Norwegian immigrant culture, of dramatic shipwrecks and the business and adventure of Great Lakes shipping in a setting that simply casts a spell over the characters as well as the reader.
This is another fantastic novel published by Unbridled Books. I saw a mention of it on twitter and I am so glad I checked it out. I don't know why I had not heard of this book before, but am grateful it finally crossed my path.
Peter Geye writes beautifully in this story of an estranged father and son.
Noah, though he has such a tumultuous relationship with his dad, does not hesitate when Olaf calls Noah to say that he needs his help. Noah leaves his wife in Boston and heads to Northern Minnesota to stay with his dad in the cabin Noah remembers from his childhood. He discovers his father is ill, dying according to Olaf. The present story is mixed with the past story that Olaf tells Noah, of a disaster on an ore boat on Lake Superior thirtysome years ago, where Olaf was one of a few survivors. Noah knows of the story of course, but not everything that happened. This tragedy changed Noah's childhood but now he learns how it affected his father.
Geye created such amazing, three-dimensional characters that I really cared about. His physical descriptions of the surroundings made the story that much more alive.
I can't possibly do this novel justice with a review, so let me just say how highly I recommend this book.
    my rating 5/5
Universal Father/Son Struggle on Minnesta's North Shore
North Shore Minnesota resident Olaf Torr has summoned his estranged son Noah home from the East Coast. He is dying and needs his son to grant him a final request; he also needs to make amends as best he can. Olaf has spent his life as a sailor on Superior and survived a terrible shipwreck of the Ragnorek (this is the name of an important Norse mythical figure whose story is illustrative of Olaf and Noah's story).

    Publisher's Summary:
Ayn Rands dystopic science-fiction novella takes place at some unspecified future date. Mankind has entered another dark age as a result of what Rand saw as the weaknesses of socialistic thinking and economics. Technological advancement is now carefully planned -- when it is allowed to occur at all -- and the concept of individuality has been eliminated. As is common in her work, Rand draws a clear distinction between the socialist/communal values of equality and brotherhood and the productive/capitalist values of achievement and individuality.

    Amazingly GOOD READ!!!!!
Iam in 8th grade and have to do a report on "Anthem" I was a little afraid at first thinking it was to advanced, but I understood every bit of it. Life in this society is unthinkable. "I" love that Prometheus found his way.
Also the Narration was a perfect tone for me.
Again, ANTHEM IS A MUST READ FOR ALL AGES.
Scares me how real this book sounds
Where does Anthem rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Very enjoyable will listen to again
    Any additional comments?
The book when written most likely sounded absurd, it is scary how we are moving twords the absurd.
    Amazing and relevant
This book is amazingly relevant. It becomes more and more relevant every year. It's like Ayn Rand was an Oracle.
    Everyone should read this.
The beginning has a very eerie similarity to current day North Korea.
    Amazing.
    Rand's classic
The narrator was nothing special but the story was one of Rand's best in my opinion.
    Great story, ok performance
A great intro to Ayn Rand. I thought there wasn't enough emotion in the performance, so maybe find another reading of it.

    Bedtime Story
My children love listening to stories when they go to be and now I have started playing them Audible books at night.
As a Nigerian living in England with English children, I always tell them stories about Nigeria however, since I started playing them this story, they love it and look forward to hearing it every night.
The richness of words and imagery is fantastic and we all love to listen to it.
I plan to get more Chinua books which I grew up reading as a kid and now my children can also enjoy.
    The relevance of African Stories
The stories of the people of Africa people by African people is I think the underestimated currency that we as Africans possess in which to remind the world of our value to and within the human family.

Narrator was great. The Story is a true African epic rooted in truth. Excellent Proverbs.

    Sweet Christmas Story
I was a little disconcerted by the back and forth story telling between a contemporary romance between two "Englishers" and then back to another romance between Amish. That was a little odd but it was really needed for the story line. I think this is first book by Shelley Shepard Gray that I've read but it won't be the last. A fairly "clean" and uncluttered writer's voice with a simple sweetness to the story. Nice family story, too. Great job interweaving the three subplots. Great resolution to the story with terrific HEAs!!!

    Publisher's Summary:
In his new novel, John Ajvide Lindqvist does for zombies what his previous novel, Let the Right One In, did for vampires.
Across Stockholm, the power grid has gone crazy. In the morgue and in cemeteries, the recently deceased are waking up. One grandfather is alight with this, with hope that his grandson will be returned, but one husband is aghast at what his adored wife has become.
Here is a horror novel that transcends its genre by showing what the return of the dead might really mean to those who loved them.
    Members Reviews:
    Brilliant! (and very very different)
First of all, please know that if you are looking for the usual Romero style flesh eating zombie mayhem, you will be waiting a long time for it in this story. This novel is a very different thing. It has been said of Stephen King that his stories arent about the haunted house, but about the people that own that house. That same idea is very true about this book. This is the tale of how the presence of the zombies affects the lives of the people who knew them when they were alive. It is also a tale of people and institutions trying to manage a situation for which there is no precedent in the best way that can think to do so, and how that leads to what is both a simultaneously tragic and heartbreaking yet beautiful and hopeful conclusion. Rest assured that for the patient horror-hound the expected zombie horror (that beyond the gross-out descriptions of the undead) does eventually appear, it does so at its natural place in this story, very near the climax, and only happens because of the course of events in the book. This isnt to say that the majority of the book isnt frightening; it is, very much so, but it is the horror of the cold chill and the creepy variety that comes from ideas and implications, instead of the "fight or flight" scares that comes from violent and unnatural events. So if you are only looking for the sort of zombie apocalypse found on the silver screen, you'll be very disappointed, but if youre looking for something deeper, something that asks what it might really be like, youre in for an engaging treat. 5 stars across the board.
    Great Book But...
This is neither a horror novel, nor really about Zombies. This is a very well written piece of literature about grief. It's a character study and really not much happens. I really enjoyed it, but it is not for everyone.
    A Classic
The author's prose is excellent which is doubly impressive considering this is a translation from the Swedish. The narration is good. I wish I had the money to buy the film rights to this novel. It lends itself to film and I believe it would be a blockbuster. I fear this may be the kind of excellent novel which slips through the cracks. I hope that doesn't happen. All else is said in Raymond's articulate review.
    Great Horror Read
The characters are interesting and well developed. The suspense is gripping with and interesting Stockholm twist.
Wanted more, got it, but not what I hoped for.
I had to try this after I read "Let Me In". This story doesn't glitter the way the other did, but it's satisfying, still. It's unique in its concept, and delivers interesting perspectives. What happens to family relationships if the dead stay around? Naturally, families are different. I think some people with enjoy this a lot more than others.

The locals in the southern Italian town where he lives call him Signor Farfalla - Mr. Butterfly - for he is a discreet gentleman who paints rare butterflies. His life is inconspicuous: mornings are spent brushing at a canvas, afternoons idling in the cafés, and evenings talking with his friend, the town priest, over a glass of brandy.
Yet there are other sides to this gentlemans life: Clara, the young student who moonlights in the town bordello, and another woman, who arrives with $100, 000 and a commission - but not for a painting of butterflies.
With this assignment returns the dark fear that has dogged Signor Farfallas mysterious life. Almost instantly, he senses a deadly circle closing in on him, one which he may or may not elude.
Part thriller, part character study, part drama of deceit and self-betrayal, The American shows Martin Booth at the very height of his powers.
(Previously published as A Very Private Gentleman.)
    Editorial Reviews:
Martin Booth is posthumously back in the spotlight again, thanks to George Clooney and a film adaptation of his novel, originally titled A Very Private Gentleman. Imagine his handsome graying head bent over a half-finished butterfly painting at a cafe table in southern Italy, then aiding in the murder of prominent public figures in Washington, D.C. Indeed, this yarn is actually the very interesting inner monologue of a man who makes guns for covert political assassination plots. It is not a thriller per se, which is perhaps why the film has not been particularly well received. But Booth launched his career first as a successful poet, and the novel is a wonderfully evocative character portrait in a way that simply cannot be captured by film.
It can, however, be captured by voice. Ralph Cosham, who has narrated other such deep portrayals in the likes of Heart of Darkness and Frankenstein, brings the same super classy and sleuth-worthy British accent that he brought to The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. He can spend several minutes discoursing on the proper way to pack a false-bottomed briefcase, then jump to his philosophy on the important differences between the two hookers he's been seeing together twice a week.
Suffice it to say that the plot is intensely understated, and that the real treat is in this man's ability to understand himself and his surroundings. He is a speculative and moral creature who does not shy away from examining his own fleeting pleasures and broad failures. During these 10 hours of Cosham's strangely absorbing monologue, there is still enough time to thread in a sparse and therefore reasonably plausible conflict of a spy on the run from another spy. The things that might make it a failure as a film are precisely those things that make The American worth a listen. Megan Volpert

    Another Good Read by Forsyth
Reading through the other reviews, I do share a number of opinions with other reviewers. Here's my take:
    1. Another great Forsyth story. A little slow to start, but once it gets going, it's a nice ride.
    2. Don't get the criticisms of the reader. Other than a few mispronounced words, he was fine.
    3. While I would agree that it's not Forsyth's best, it is certainly not his worst. It was an enjoyable read, and based on how well Forsyth usually researches his topics, it is likely you'll learn something about the drug smuggling problem in the process of reading. To me, Forsyth's mediocre books are better than other authors' best offerings, so it was worth my time and money.
    4. I liked the fact that he used characters from a previous book. I may be wrong, but I don't remember this in previous Forsyth books, and it was a nice touch.
    5. I do agree that the ending seemed a bit rushed and while probably realistic, I also would have preferred (as another reviewer stated) a "happier, but less realistic ending".
All said - don't shy away from this one. If this is your first venture into Forsyth's novels, I'd recommend you read "The Day of the Jackal" or "Avenger" first.
    Hmmm, not his best
I've read just about everything Frederick Forsyth has done. He has become rather predictable down the years. Nowadays, he spends a little too much time praising the extraordinary skills of the military. I'm sure they are, but they are not gods and the occasional flub would be better for the fiction.
His druggies are very bad, as no doubt they are, but I suspect they would not fall over quite so fast in real life as Freddie makes 'em go down.
As usual, his work requires a close listen, there is the usual attention to detail and that is something I do like. I suspect his sources were rather better in the past than they are nowadays.
The split-strike ending is downright peculiar, and while he does usually wrap a surprise up, I just got the feeling that this ending was rather constructed to fit his usual patterns.
The readers pronunciation of some Scottish terms was off here and there, but it was a perfectly competent read. Just not Freddie's best.

    I was bored
Gotta tell you, this was more like listening to a disertation of the history of the cocaine trade than anything else. No real character development.

And If I Die! John Aubrey Anderson
    Great read!
Unfortunate Turn From Suspense and Intrigue
I've read the first two books in this series and although Mr. Anderson is not a great writer in my opinion, he has been able to offer suspense and intrigue as well as spiritual edification in his novels. Unfortunately, I found this latest one dragging and unclimatic. There were sections that were enjoyable (Mose's childhood for example) but most of the book just offered extremely mundane details about people making acquaintances with each other. The end was horribly predictable and unimpressive. It read more like the telling of a real-life story that was deeply spiritual but lacking the intrigue to make it into a movie. If I'd read an abbreviated version of this book in a Christian magazine under "testimonials" then I'd be thoroughly impressed. I love this author and hope he does well in his future literary endeavors.

I loved all the main characters, they made me want to live my Christian life more as they did, putting God first in all things; trusting completely in His ways and plans, and remembering to go to prayer first more often; very inspiring. That being said the story will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. Don't miss reading all of this series beginning to end it will not disappoint. I hope that Mr Anderson will write a lot more.
I loved reading them and can't wait for #5
I couldn't put any of the four books down. I loved reading them and can't wait for #5!
