A Home Run for Horror Fiction
This audiobook is easily ranked in my top three favorites ever, and perhaps the most well done compilation of short stories that I've had the pleasure of being freaked out by. Regina Puckett takes the cake for creepy and unexpected. And the narrator is perfectly matched: really talented reading.
Excellent character development and unique story lines make this audiobook a rare gem. While there isn't one weak tale in the bunch, the stories that lingered most in my brain the next day were the first two. The only problem now is that I crave more...
    sooooo creative
Regina Puckett , you should write more short horror stories. ....PLEASE! !!!!!
I truly love her writing, the way she puts a spin on stories end, ect. 'Will work for food'. I have both her short stories books and I'm left wanting more! .she make you feel your in the tales with vivid writing.
    thanks Regina
    Good not great

    great book of surprises
I love short stories, these short stories all seem to have a surprise. ...an ending you really don't see coming
    too dark and depressing
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
    Nobody that i know.
What was most disappointing about Regina Pucketts story?
I do not like stories that end bad involving children, and the story about the doll was awful.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
There was nothing about this book i liked.
    Any additional comments?
I wish i did not waste a credit.

    Members Reviews:
    Creepy, disturbingly fun
After reading this you'll careful what findings you take home with you! Edgar Allan Poe came to mind as I read this short, but engrossing work. Vlad is going to have a designated shelf in my bookcase!
This was one of my favorite quick reads in the horror genre
Can't say much without spoilers so I'll make this short. This was one of my favorite quick reads in the horror genre. Wonderfully disturbing, fast-paced creeptastic horror story that you won't be able to put down. You won't be disappointed!
    A chilling horror story
Poor old Roberta has hit rock bottom. Her husband died years ago, she hasn't seen her daughter in years, and she's even had to put down her beloved cat. Alone and miserable, she wallows in despair and heads to a nearby riverbank. But before she can throw herself in, she unearths a skull in the mud, a skull that speaks to her, whispering words into her mind. Glad to once again have a companion, Roberta cherishes the skull, whom she names Yorick, and does whatever she must to keep him happy.
Yorick is an unsettling horror novella that chronicles Roberta's descent into utter madness. Written with rich, gruesome descriptions, it's the kind of story you read to for chills and thrills. Vaslyn tells the story mostly from Roberta's point of view but keeps her at arm's length, giving the reader a sense of an omniscient narrator with a voice of his own, a voice that's not afraid to paint vivid images. For instance, here is the passage in which Roberta first notices the skull: "The river drew closer in little fits and starts, and as she neared it, she noticed a funny little dome poking out of the grass near the shore, a pimple in a patch of thinning hair."
Fans of Shakespeare will no doubt notice that Yorick was also the name of the deceased jester Hamlet speaks to in his famed skull speech: "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest... Where are your gibes now?" Like Hamlet, Roberta, too, talks to the dead and pities him for the fact that he can no longer do the things he used to. And because she sees Yorick as her friend, Roberta will do whatever it takes to make the unfortunate skull whole again.
Absurd as Roberta seems, one cannot help feeling bad for her and understanding her motivations, even as she becomes increasingly insane. Watching her spiral deeper and deeper into psychosis is disturbing yet entertaining, somewhat reminiscent of reading the dark tales of Edgar Allen Poe. Creepy in all the right ways, Yorick is a highly enjoyable tale of grief, loneliness, and horrifying madness.
As fun as it is disturbing
I enjoyed this story quite a bit. It succeeds in being both equally fun, and creepy at the same time. Vaslyn introduces us to Roberta, a truly pitiable character at first. But once she uncovers poor Yorick, we uncover more of her. As she begins to change we go from feeling pity, to rooting for her. Like Tony Soprano, sometimes it's fun to root for the bad guy.

Good Collection; Some you will remember a long whil
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The only thing that I would change is that I would add more stories to it! I was sorely disappointed when it was all over.
What other book might you compare Great Horror Stories to and why?
Any other short-story-collection-type of book. Since it's not a single novel or novella, it is a difficult question to answerm
Would you listen to another book narrated by Cathy Dobson?
I would, but only after having gotten used to her way of talking. Some may find the way she pronounces certain things kind of annoying. I found myself getting used to it and enjoying her narrating. (Although she is far from my favorite narrator)
Was Great Horror Stories worth the listening time?
    Yes.
    Any additional comments?
This one is worth the money/token.
the narrator had such an irritating drone !
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator - over emphasised almost every sentence. Made the listening experience ghastlier than the stories.
What didnt you like about Cathy Dobsons performance?
Everything. She was atrocious to listen to. If I had tried this as my first ever audio book experience it would have made me leery of trying another one.
Her over - emphasis was like chalk on a blackboard and really made it hard to enjoy the content. I will have to look for the actual book and read it myself as I could not bear a re-run via the ears.
Was Great Horror Stories worth the listening time?
Not with the assault on the ears. If it was possible to get the same audio book with a decent narrator I would be asking Audible for a swap.
    Any additional comments?
I think I should be able to get a refund on this - I took to letting it run for 10 minutes while I fell asleep and have not heard one whole story of the collection - I have no desire to repeat the experience.
    dreadful narration.
fantastic stories completely ruined by monotonous, soulless, boring, life ending, phone smashing, audible hating narration.
terrible worst story I have ever listened to. th
worst story I have ever listened too. The reader was even worse than the story. utter rubbish I am sorry to say.
Cathy Dobson - Please, please stop narrating!
Would you try another book written by the authors or narrated by Cathy Dobson?
Written by the authors - absolutely. The only reason I gave a 2* was that I couldn't get past the first story because of the abysmal narration.
Narrated by Cathy Dobson? That's hilarious. NEVER, EVER AGAIN. (I always check now to make sure that she is not the narrator before I buy).
What could the authors have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Not the authors fault - they will be spinning in their grave at someone chewing up their beautiful words and vomiting them back out into a microphone.
What didnt you like about Cathy Dobsons performance?
Everything. She has a terrible, whiny voice, which is totally unsuitable for narration.

    Publisher's Summary:
Why do you suppose some combat veterans give up the sport of hunting? Is it because they gain empathy with the hunted, or hunting a prey less cunning than they has lost its allure. Richard Connell, in this short story The Most Dangerous Game takes us where the hunter becomes the hunted. This hunter is not being hunted by a beast less cunning or calculating than he is, like a lion or a tiger. No, this hunter is a master at his craft, crueler and only slightly better armed than he is.
This tale raises numerous questions, for example, where did that excellent fillet mignon come from, since General Zaroff lives in seclusion on an uncharted island in the Caribbean? He does, however, have a stock of the most dangerous prey locked up in his dungeon, one of which he releases occasionally and then hunts down, supposedly feeding the carcass to his hounds.
Let your imagination run wild while you enjoy this thrilling, chilling narrative.

Good presentation of a great story ...
I've loved this book since I stumbled upon it a number of years ago. I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but this one is so tightly plotted and suspenseful that it feels like you've finished an entire book by the time you're done. This reading is a good one - the narrator has a fairly deep and slightly rough voice that is a great match for the subject, and he rachets up the tension just enough as the story progresses. It's a great short listen!

    Not Exactly Horror
This audio book was provided to me by Audiobook Jukebox for review.
The books started out with an alright feel to it. The main characters along with several minor characters and The Howler and introduced and there is a bit of background given. Its quickly established that the main character, Don, isnt all that popular and that he has some troubles at home, which is why he has his friends in his bedroom. His friends being pictures and statues of animals.
The story takes a while to get going and it seemed like The Howler was really only there simply to help move things along to the point where the horse makes its appearance. The Howler is in fact a werewolf, though it only ever mentions him having long nails/claws, so Im not sure how accurate of a description that is. His character was a bit weak, he spent most of his time skulking around in the bushes missing opportunities to kill people. When he finally did make a kill it felt like it had taken a bit too long to reach that point.
When the horse is finally summoned, and after far too long of it just creeping in the shadows and forcing the narrator to say Iron striking iron. Hollow. far too many times the horse truly appeared. The murders that followed made sense to the rest of the story but overall seemed a bit lackluster, mostly it just slowly stalked after the individual scaring them with the sound of it approaching but them not being able to see it.
The narration of this book was fairly good. At times I found the narrators voice a bit dull and my attention wandering away from what I was listening to. One issue I did have was at the parts where Don was yelling the narrator seemed to be whispering those sections which seemed odd and a bit disappointing. He should have at least raised his voice, not lowered it.
As far as the overall story is concerned I found there was a lot of repetitiveness throughout, especially with the description Iron striking iron. Hollow.. That sentence alone seemed to have been said probably around 100 times and I wonder if it would have felt less or more repetitive had I read to book instead of listening to it. The horror in the book seemed almost non-existent, even with the various murders, The Howler and the horse stalking people before he killed them. The issues with Don, his parents, the school and everything else seemed to take away from what would be considered the horror plot line of this story. There was a lot of good descriptive moments in the book, however I felt at times that the story was a bit bogged down by all these descriptions and it distracted from what was actually happening.
I think this book might be better classified as Young Adult Horror and even then I think its a stretch on the horror part.

Police officer David Hanlin is asked to investigate the presumed murder of a child in an obscure rural village in Cornwall. During the protagonist's short stay, he is slowly subjected to a spectacle of psychological trickery, sexual seduction, ancient religious practices and nightmarish sacrificial rituals. Shrouded in the same brand of mystery and contradiction that forms its tangled plot, Ritual, the 1967 debut by playwright David Pinner, is commonly recognised to be the basis for the 1973 film, The Wicker Man, which has enthralled and inspired generations of film enthusiasts throughout the world.

So bad I could not finish it
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A total re-write. Story is superficial, full of cliches and writing smug, constantly drawing attention to how clever the writer believed himself. It's all yarn and no substance.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Narrated to slowly which made it even more painful to listen to. Had to play it double speed before giving up after hearing the first third of the tale
    Any additional comments?
The Wicker Man is a great film, supposedly in part based on The Ritual. Thankfully Anthony Shaffer's screenplay didn't take too much notice of this book.
    Vintage 1960s pagan mystery thriller
If you could sum up Ritual in three words, what would they be?
    Classic Folk Horror
What about Ric Jerroms performance did you like?
Ric Jerrom's patient delivery is on the mark - it allows the listener time to digest Pinner's flowery literary flourishes.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Intrigue.
    Any additional comments?
See amazon for reviews of this Wicker Man ancestor novel. I wish to compliment Ric Jerrom's performance. I read the novel a couple of years before hearing this audio book and am impressed with his patient delivery. There is a lot of rural, pagan descriptive imagery that could so easily flood the listener. Listening to this was an enjoyable, thrilling companion during long dog walks around rural England.

    Just another lame vampire story
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
    So predictable. So lame.
Has Fevre Dream turned you off from other books in this genre?
    Just too predictable
What does Ron Donachie bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Great character actor amazing vocal control. Way above this tripe.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Fevre Dream?
I would have rewritten it to be about the gothic of the south and some other layers of mystical perversion. The area is so witchy why not really go into a Fever Dream instead of an Anne Rice rip off.
    Any additional comments?
    No
A fine melding of form and content.
If you like your vampire stories to be multi-layered, subtle and character driven, as well as drenched in blood, then this is for you. George R R Martin exhibits the splendid command of plot and character which he displays in his later works in this stand alone novel from the early eighties. Set on a Mississippi steamboat in the years bracketing the american civil war, this is a book steeped in historical colour and full of magnificently drawn settings. A confident and unadorned narration keeps the story moving forward to its thrilling climax, and the narrator's multiple characterisations - especially Abner Marsh - are clear and well distinguished. A fine work from an acknowledged master of the genre.
    Fevre Dream; Excellent!
Would you listen to Fevre Dream again? Why?
I read quite a lot of books. There are very few books that i read/ listen to, more than once. Fevre Dream is one that I will read and re-read; its that good. There are so many layers to this story. The historical setting, and morality of that time, is perfect for the choices facing the two lead characters throughout the story; it allows us to see the difficult changes both men are striving for within their own cultures, mirroring the abolition issue thats in the background of the mississippi river life, as the fevre dream journeys to New Orleans.
What did you like best about this story?
The main theme i got running through this story was 'Choice'. Abner and Joshua, from different sides of the fence, have to continually search themselves for what's 'right' in each situation they come across and not just what their peers would do. As Joshua's plan is revealed, there are all new trust issues that need to be dealt with. Abner and Joshua each play the part of a representative for each race with their views and ideals, and a great friendship is the result.
The friendship between the two is the best part of this story.

    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
Best known for his masterpiece of horror, Dracula, Bram Stoker wrote a number of other novels and many short stories, all on supernatural themes or filled with a physical terror reminiscent of Poe. "Draculas Guest" was originally part of the great novel, but was excised and published separately. Some of these stories, such as "The Squaw", "The Judges House", and "The Burial of the Rats", rank very high among classic tales of the macabre. These stories deserve to be better known for the light they shed on the enigmatic author of one of the worlds supreme literary adventures into the realm of nightmare.
    Editorial Reviews:
Rupert Degas demonstrates that he was the perfect choice of narrator for Bram Stoker's collection of macabre short stories. Degas's graceful use of pauses adds a deliciously suspenseful edge to each work. With impressive versatility, he fluidly transitions from harshly accented peasant to appropriately haughty nobleman. With a dramatic flair, he expertly delivers both hushed tones and frenzied exclamations. Degas is guaranteed to make listeners' hearts race even when they already know what's coming. His performance of these superb classics will enhance its appeal for any fan of nightmare adventure.
    Members Reviews:
Dracula's Guest as good as I remember, but...
The synopsis was completely misleading as it implied there was other short stories contained within. I was already familiar with Dracula's Guest being the missing first chapter of the novel Dracula as I owned a short story anthology of other "chilling tales" that contained it when I was a teenager. That book has long since disappeared, so I'm happy to have the story again. I'm very disappointed that the only other things contained within were attempts to get me to purchase sets of x number of stories you should read before you die. Um they're free on Amazon individually. I already own most of them. So glad I didn't pay for this one!
    Must-read for Stoker fans
Dracula being one of my favorite books, I was thrilled to find this collection of Bram Stoker's short stories. I enjoy horror writers who can provoke old-fashioned fright without relying too heavily on graphic details; while those details have a place, too many of them dampen a story. I was hoping that this collection would be as skillfully crafted as Dracula; I'm happy to say that this anthology mostly lived up to my expectations. While there's plenty of ghoulish tension throughout the book, these stories also provide moral lessons, cautionary tales, some hair-raising plot twists, and even a few happy anecdotes that keep the collection from feeling monolithic.
Disclaimer: I tried to keep the "spoilers" in this review to a minimum - that is, I did not include any details that you would not read within the first half of the stories. Read on if you want more information about each individual tale; otherwise, suffice it to say that fans of gothic horror writing will probably find this collection very enjoyable and worth a read.
