Title: Waging War on the Autistic Child

Length: 10 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-23-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Andrew Wakefield reveals the inside story of desperate parents trying to help their autistic children, only to be labeled as abusers by social workers, medical professionals, and the courts.
As the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders grows each year, new discoveries and controversies arise. Andrew Wakefield explores many of these in his thorough investigation of the recent trial case of the Arizona 5, which destroyed an Arizona family. Two parents, with five children on the spectrum, were accused of Münchausen syndrome by proxy - a rare form of child abuse - and were ganged up on by physicians, child protective services, and the courts, who alleged that the parents fabricated medical symptoms in all five children. However, Wakefield now presents ample evidence that was disregarded and which would have proven the parents innocence.
Families affected by autism suffer great hardship and prejudice, particularly as they navigate the uncertain waters of diagnosis, treatment, and education. The shocking story of the Arizona 5 family delves into the tremendous challenges some parents have to face, especially if their views on how to treat the syndrome dont align with the medical worlds standards. Wakefield also includes numerous studies and research trials that support the controversial yet significant roles that vaccines and diet play in autism, factors many medical professionals wrongfully dismiss.
    Editorial Reviews:
Andrew J. Wakefield explores unfair accusations flung at families of autistic children. He focuses on a specific case study: the "Arizona Five". While listeners may or may agree with Wakefield's perspectives on autism, they will surely enjoy actor Gildart Jackson's winning voice. With his British accent and excellent diction, Jackson's performance is smart and smooth. He makes listening to Wakefield's science almost an easy feat. The combination of Wakefield's controversial conclusions and Jackson's approachable pacing makes this audiobook an eye-opening one.

A honest and true account of my families worst year
This book was written about my family. As such, I know that I am a "biased reviewer." However I also has a front row seat to the real life events that this book covers. I grew up in the same home as my siblings who were taken away. As a much older sister, I helped to raise them, and can (and did) testify to the truth that this book exposes. It was beyond heartbreaking. It was wrong. It was a farce of a trial. It defied logic.
Dr. Wakefield wasn't just someone who wrote a book about this tragedy. He was an advocate for my family, a friend to my parents, and perhaps most importantly; he is helping the truth be brought to the light. We will be forever grateful to Dr.Wakefield for "fighting" with us.
Nothing can rewind time and undo the trauma that this caused to my family, and to my siblings. However I pray that it, in some small part, this will help to stop this same thing from happening to others. Because it is. This is not an isolated story.

    Publisher's Summary:
    Audie Award Finalist, History, 2014
Daniel Stashower, the two-time Edgar award-winning author of The Beautiful Cigar Girl, uncovers the riveting true story of the "Baltimore Plot", an audacious conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln on the eve of the Civil War.
In February of 1861, just days before he assumed the presidency, Abraham Lincoln faced a "clear and fully-matured" threat of assassination as he traveled by train from Springfield to Washington for his inauguration. Over a period of 13 days the legendary detective Allan Pinkerton worked feverishly to detect and thwart the plot, assisted by a captivating young widow named Kate Warne, Americas first female private eye.
As Lincolns train rolled inexorably toward "the seat of danger", Pinkerton struggled to unravel the ever-changing details of the murder plot, even as he contended with the intractability of Lincoln and his advisors, who refused to believe that the danger was real. With time running out Pinkerton took a desperate gamble, staking Lincolns life - and the future of the nation - on a "perilous feint" that seemed to offer the only chance that Lincoln would survive to become president.
Shrouded in secrecy - and, later, mired in controversy - the story of the "Baltimore Plot" is one of the great untold tales of the Civil War era, and with The Hour of Peril Stashower has crafted a spellbinding historical narrative with the pace and urgency of a race-against-the-clock thriller.
    Critic Reviews:
It's history that reads like a race-against-the-clock thriller. (Harlan Coben)
    Members Reviews:
    Good if unbalanced
I've read a ton of Civil War books so the "secret plot" is by no means new to me but I was interested in getting more details about it since I never studied it in any depth. In fact there is quite a bit of debate about how real the plot was so I looked forward to reading (listening) to this book.
First -- the book is written from almost 100% a northern perspective. For example when talking about John Brown, who murdered 5 innocent people in Kansas, the author states that 5 people were killed during a raid into Kansas. Killed and murder are words that have very different meanings. John Brown was certainly on the right side of the issue, but that doesn't change the fact he was murderous psychopath. There are many many many examples of the author framing peoples backgrounds to make the story flow. Don't get me wrong, this isn't like Al Franken doing a book about Reagan, it's not political and what the author is writing isn't lies, it's just incomplete. If you already have a strong knowledge of the Civil War you'll pick-up on this very quickly and you'll be able to adjust the story accordingly. However if you're new to the subject I highly suggest you do additional reading to get a more balanced view of the subject and characters involved. More information is always better than less information.
Second -- this book is more about Allan Pinkerton than it is about the plot itself. I knew this going in so I wasn't disappointed.

Length: 8 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
"He won't discuss money, but he now accepts Visa: Settlement, $3 billion, taking on MasterCard, Priceless."(The New York Times)
Lloyd Constantine began his career in legal services, representing impoverished clients in civil rights and constitutional cases. Decades later, he would make headlines for representing retailers and consumers against a cartel that undermined one of the fundamental tenets of commerce in America: competition. A man who thrives on competition himself, Constantine now gives us the insider's story on the biggest antitrust lawsuit in history - a case that pitted his small firm against financial-industry giants Visa and MasterCard, along with Clifford-Chance, the largest law firm in the world.
Combining the real-life legal drama of A Civil Action with the relentless pace of a John Grisham novel, Constantine delivers the definitive account of a case that made history and will be studied for years to come. Beginning in the 1980s, when Visa and MasterCard - whose combined market share topped 95 percent - announced the merger of their debit card networks, Priceless traces the fallout of this catastrophic union, from raised eyebrows among attorney generals to the launch of a major class-action lawsuit. For the five merchants initially represented by Constantine's firm (Wal-Mart, Sears, Circuit City, Safeway, and The Limited), the reality of the situation was clear: Millions of U.S. businesses were being illegally coerced in a scheme that forced excessive fees on merchants every time a customer used a debit card. When a $3.4 billion settlement was reached in 2003, the court estimated that the case would save stores and shoppers up to $87 billion in the first decade alone.
A suspense-filled story with a vibrant cast of characters - and a smoking-gun document known as "The Shark" - Priceless travels from corporate backrooms to the courtroom to capture one of America's biggest triumphs in the high-stakes world of antitrust litigation.
    Editorial Reviews:
Alan Robertson's smooth rumble quickly pulls listeners into the complex world of high-stakes litigation as he performs this true story about the biggest antitrust lawsuit in history. Attorney Lloyd Constantine provides an inside account of his battle against financial giants Visa and Mastercard to prove that millions of U.S. businesses were being illegally coerced into paying excessive fees every time a customer used a debit card. Robertson makes subtle changes to his cadence and timbre to heighten the suspense as Constantine navigates tense backroom meetings and hostile courtrooms, and listeners will be enthralled until Constantine brings his case to a close.

    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Beginning in January 2009,The Payofflays bare Washingtons culture of power and plutocracy. Its the story of the 20-month struggle by Senator Ted Kaufman and Jeff Connaughton, his chief of staff, to hold Wall Street executives accountable for securities fraud, stop stock manipulation by high-frequency traders, and break up too-big-to-fail megabanks. This book takes us inside their dogged crusade against institutional inertia and industry influence as they encounter an outright reluctance by the Obama administration, the Justice Department, and the Securities and Exchange Commission to treat Wall Street crimes with the gravity they deserve. On financial reforms, Connaughton criticizes Democrats for relying on the very Wall Street technocrats who had failed to prevent the crisis and Republicans for staunchly opposing real reforms, primarily to enjoy a golden opportunity to siphon fundraising dollars from the Wall Street executives who had raised millions to elect Barack Obama president.
Connaughton, a former lawyer in the Clinton White House, illuminates the pivotal moments and key decisions in the fight for financial reform that have gone largely unreported. His arch, nonpartisan account chronicles the reasons why Wall Streets worst offenses were left unpunished - and why its likely that the 2008 debacle will happen again.

The great mystery story in American politics these days is why, over the course of two presidential administrations (one from each party), theres been noserious federal criminal investigation of Wall Street during a period of what appears to be epic corruption. Publisher's Summary:
In the mid-1920s, young children began to vanish from neighborhoods around New York City. It took the police a decade to find their abductor, an unassuming 64-year-old handyman named Albert Fish. Fish had committed crimes of unspeakable horror: He had not only abducted and murdered the children, but also tortured and, in some cases, eaten them. During Fish's trial, some of the country's most prominent psychiatrists debated the exact nature of Fish's crimes. Was he evil or insane? Who had the power to determine where one ended and the other began? At stake was not just the prospect of justice for Fish and his victims, but also the future of the new science of criminal behavior - the idea that society's worst monsters needed to be both punished and understood.
Award-winning journalist Deborah Blum tells the story of a notorious cannibal killer, the detective who brought him to justice, and the scientists who tried to make sense of his crimes.

    Could Have Been Better
What did you like best about Angel Killer? What did you like least?
I got this one because I enjoyed listening to "The Poisoner's Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York (Unabridged)" and expected something similar. While this story is interesting, it just wasn't as good as "The Poisoner's Handbook."
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Please, the music! While it was appropriate (maybe) for the time period this tale played out in New York, the music was distracting and by the end of this short story, I was ready for it to be over and done with.
Did Deborah Blum do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
This is a short tale, so maybe hiring a professional actor/narrator wasn't an option, but it took me three (3!) tries to get through this book. Ms. Blum is great at writing a story, but only okay at reading it out loud. (Sorry, Ms. Blum!)
Was Angel Killer worth the listening time?
You kind of have to want to hear the story bad enough to get by the music and narration.
    Awful
How could the performance have been better?
The performer had the most awful uninteresting monotone voice. The story is an eery story and she read it as if she was reading the ingredients on a box of cereal.
    Any additional comments?
The book added nothing new to what is known about Albert Fish.
    Boring.
Don't waste your time or money.
    barely adequate
Would you try another book from Deborah Blum and/or Deborah Blum?
    No
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
    Provided more matter, less art.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She sounded like the between-scene voice that tries to keep you interested in a low-quality one hour tv special between commercial breaks. The book relied on narrative tricks and adjectives to build suspense rather than the genuinely harrowing and horrible details of the case, and it wasn't very effective.
    You didnt love this book...

Length: 9 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 18 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
The riveting account of the slave ship rebellion told for the first time from the slaves perspective.
The slave ship Amistad set sail from Havana on July 2, 1839, on a routine delivery of human cargo. A few days into its voyage, the 53 African captives aboard would seize control and steer a new course - one that took them to freedom and ultimately into history.
Though the Amistad rebellion has been celebrated in films and books, its story has largely been told through the eyes of white abolitionists, with the Supreme Court victory by the Africans as the ultimate triumph. Now, Marcus Redikers captivating new history turns the lens on the Africans themselves. Using the story of their horrific plight back to the roots of their shared culture a continent away, he reframes the Amistad story as a crucial moment in the great chain of resistance stretching from the earliest slave revolts through the civil rights struggles of the 20th century.

    Historically Informative
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would absolutely recommend this book. When I picked it up it was because I absolutely loved the movie. This book starts out telling the listener it is not a depiction of the movie, but it's better. The reader is drawn through the history of the event. You are shown how this one event was felt throughout the United States and the world. Your eyes are opened to what you knew, but forgot. One example was that the decision in favor of the African's of the Amistad was a landmark decision that would have been completely unexpected by the people of the time. We know it was a struggle, but through this narration we can feel it as well.
What other book might you compare The Amistad Rebellion to and why?
I don't think there is another book out there that I would compare to this book. It is an original work that brings a historical event to life for us.
    Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite is at the very end of the book. When the missionaries take the African's home and learn that the changes they see in the returning African's is not a rejection of what they learned, but that they could never really be expected to reject their own heritage.
Whats the most interesting tidbit youve picked up from this book?
That the writer of the "Star Spangled Banner" was pro-slavery and a prosecuting attorney. Somehow it seems that someone so completely pro-freedom should have understood the need to be free. The fact that he prosecuted individuals seeking that freedom and often sought the death penalty for these individuals was more than a little disappointing.
    Any additional comments?
If history was presented this way to our children there would be less chance of them forgetting the lessons of the past.
Learned a lot but wished it was first person not third person narrator
I liked hearing about the history but wished the story was told from the participants instead. It was very informative but a bit dry. It had little emotional pull as A story like Roots had , funny in parts. I am glad I listened as it was a great telling of how everything unfolded but to me it lacked drama and immediacy. Thanks

    Publisher's Summary:
A harsh and revealing political exposé of two beloved presidents.
Judge Andrew P. Napolitano reveals how Teddy Roosevelt, a bully, and Woodrow Wilson, a constitutional scholar, each pushed aside the Constitutions restrictions on the federal government and used it as an instrument to redistribute wealth, regulate personal behavior, and enrich the government. These two men and the Progressives who supported them have brought us, among other things:
The Progressive Era witnessed the most dramatic peaceful shift of power from persons and from the states to a new and permanent federal bureaucracy in all of American history. Theodore and Woodrow exposes two of our nations most beloved presidents and how they helped speed the Progressive cause on its merry way.
    Members Reviews:
    Not being a libertarian!
Not being a libertarian, but more an independent conservative, I found Napolitano's book the most enlightening listen in a very long time. Get it; progressive history they didn't teach you through our progressive educational establishment-bureaucracy.
As an old-school Roman Catholic, Napolitano brings up both Roosevelt's and Wilson's Protestantism. However their Preterism is really a bigger and bolder attempt to create America's historic religious narrative and that is, mankind should attempt to create God's eternal "Shining City on a Hill," on this continent. It doesn't seem that is working out too well at the present time.
Perhaps, contrary to our wishful thinking, maybe we really are not God, nor gods!
The Case Against Theodore and Woodrow...
This was a fascinating and insightful look at the social/political philosophy of progressivism, and how it drove America's first progressive presidents - Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson - to fundamentally change the US Constitution. Andrew Napolitano cuts right to what he sees as the heart of the issue: Roosevelt and Wilson worked to destroy the federalism built into the US Constitution by the founders primarily through the means of: 1) progressive taxation (the income tax), 2) the expansion of the regulatory state and the scope of the federal government into state and local jurisdictions, 3) the wielding of US military power to influence political events around the globe, 4) federally directed social engineering to "improve" society, 5) the manipulation of US currency and orchestration of monetary policy through a central bank (Federal Reserve System), 6) the direct election of US Senators by popular vote.
Napolitano, a staunch, energetic, and well-spoken libertarian, makes the case that the pressing of these items from the turn-of-the century progressive's agenda by Roosevelt and Wilson sent the US on a path away from the one envisioned by the founders. Instead of limited government power, state's rights, and frugal monetary policy and budgeting, with Roosevelt and Wilson the US started a journey toward a strong and oppressive federal government, weakened state jurisdictions which have increasingly become little more than sub-jurisdictional units of the federal burocracy, an imperial executive, bloated budgets, and reckless fiscal policy. Napolitano makes no bones that his book is not a history of the two progressive administrations or a biography of the men who lead them.

    Publisher's Summary:
As presidential candidates sling dirt at each other, America desperately needs a few real heroes. Tragically, liberal historians and educators have virtually erased traditional American heroes from history. According to the Left, the Founding Fathers were not noble architects of America but selfish demagogues, and self-made entrepreneurs like Rockefeller were robber barons and corporate polluters. Instead of honoring great men from Americas past, kids today now idolize rock stars, pro athletes, and Hollywood celebrities.
In his new book, author Brion McClanahan rescues the legendary deeds of the greatest Americans and shows why we ought to venerate heroes like Captain John Smith, adventurer Daniel Boone, General Robert E. Lee, and many more. The Politically Incorrect Guide to Real American Heroes not only resuscitates Americas forgotten heroes but sheds light on the Lefts most cherished figures, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the Kennedys.
With biting wit and devastating detail, McClanahan strikes back against the multicultural narrative peddled by liberal historians who make heroes out of pop-culture icons and corrupt politicians. In Americas hour of peril, McClanahans book is a timely and entertaining call to remember the heritage of this great nation and the heroes who built it.
Brion McClanahan is author of The Founding Fathers Guide to the Constitution, The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Founding Fathers, and holds an MA and Ph.D. in American history from the University of South Carolina.
    Critic Reviews:
Brion McClanahan identifies some of the long forgotten American heroes who helped shape the greatest quality of life the world has ever known. (Ted Nugent, rock n roll legend and New York Times best-selling author)
You have to read a book that explains why well known men like Robert E. Lee and little known women like Augusta Jane Evans are American heroes, and why PC favorites like the Kennedys and Margaret Sanger should never have been given the title in the first place." Makes me proud to be an American again. Personally, I'm tired of all our heroes being deconstructed and turn apart at every turn in today's America. This refreshing look at traditional American heroes was a well needed and enjoyable read.
The truth shall set you free. Great work!
This well researched book is an excellent and enjoyable overview of information that is obscured by modern progressive leftists. Reading it and being introduced to historical literature that verify it is a worthwhile endeavor.

A spectacular romp through the Puritan City, here Neil Miller relates the scintillating story of how a powerful band of Brahmin moral crusaders helped make Boston the most straitlaced city in America, forever linked with the infamous catchphrase "banned in Boston."

The Watch and Ward's Influence on U.S. Morality
Neil Miller is one of my favorite history writers a gifted poet on the history of sexual liberation and suppression.
Miller's fascinating history of the New England Watch and Ward Society depicts their efforts to keep Boston free of lasciviousness and vice. Neil is a wizard of juicy anecdotes, period details, and the sort of narrative that puts the story in history.
The pre-curser to today's religious hypcorites were Boston's notorious "Watch and Ward." They excelled at kink while they were trying to "protect" Boston from prostitutes and "fantasies of urination."
Miller looks at the warring dogmas of free speech and puritanism that set precedence for legal and culture wars that we see unfolding today. If you want to know why Americans became famous for their absurd prudery, this is your map and compass.
A little on the tedious side
