Title: The Whites of Their Eyes
Subtitle: The Tea Party's Revolution and the Battle Over American History
    Author: Jill Lepore
    Narrator: Emily Zeller
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-10-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 18 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Americans have always put the past to political ends. The Union laid claim to the Revolution - so did the Confederacy. Civil rights leaders said they were the true sons of liberty - so did Southern segregationists. This book tells the story of the centuries-long struggle over the meaning of the nation's founding, including the battle waged by the Tea Party, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and evangelical Christians to "take back America".
Jill Lepore, Harvard historian and New Yorker staff writer, offers a wry and bemused look at American history according to the far right, from the "rant heard round the world", which launched the Tea Party, to the Texas School Board's adoption of a social-studies curriculum that teaches that the United States was established as a Christian nation. Along the way, she provides rare insight into the 18th-century struggle for independence - the real one, that is. Lepore traces the roots of the far right's reactionary history to the bicentennial in the 1970s, when no one could agree on what story a divided nation should tell about its unruly beginnings.
Behind the Tea Party's Revolution, she argues, lies a nostalgic and even heartbreaking yearning for an imagined past - a time less troubled by ambiguity, strife, and uncertainty - a yearning for an America that never was. The Whites of Their Eyes reveals that the far right has embraced a narrative about America's founding that is not only a fable, but is also, finally, a variety of fundamentalism - anti-intellectual, antihistorical, and dangerously antipluralist.

    Title: Rez Life
Subtitle: An Indian's Journey Through Reservation Life
    Author: David Treuer
    Narrator: Peter Berkrot
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-29-12
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 42 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Celebrated novelist David Treuer has gained a reputation for writing fiction that expands the horizons of Native American literature. In Rez Life, his first full-length work of nonfiction, Treuer brings a novelist's storytelling skill and an eye for detail to a complex and subtle examination of Native American reservation life, past and present.
With authoritative research and reportage, Treuer illuminates misunderstood contemporary issues of sovereignty, treaty rights, and natural-resource conservation. He traces the waves of public policy that have disenfranchised and exploited Native Americans, exposing the tension that has marked the historical relationship between the United States government and the Native American population. Through the eyes of students, teachers, government administrators, lawyers, and tribal court judges, he shows how casinos, tribal government, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs have transformed the landscape of Native American life.
A member of the Ojibwe of northern Minnesota, Treuer grew up on Leech Lake Reservation, but was educated in mainstream America. Exploring crime and poverty, casinos and wealth, and the preservation of native language and culture, Rez Life is a strikingly original work of history and reportage, a must listen for anyone interested in the Native American story.
    Critic Reviews:
"Treuer's account reads like a novel, brimming with characters, living and dead, who bring his tribe's history to life." (Booklist)

Rez Life needs a Rez voice not a Suyapi narrator..
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
...I'm not talking a Rez'd out voice "ayyye Cuz, init?!" But at least an urban Ndn? I was trapped driving 20 hours with nothing else to listen to so I had to stop at a Starbucks and download a Sedaris book. This may seem petty but there are so few Ndn books on audible (besides the White Indian Expert books) I had high hopes for Rez Life.
-This narrator sounds so white and so grating I had a hard time listening sadly, as the themes are ones white america needs to hear especially after all the hype from shows like Diane Sawyers' expose on reservation poverty and the current trend again, of taking children away from parents because they are poor- POVERTY DOES NOT EQUEL NEGLECT. Init.
Would you be willing to try another one of Peter Berkrots performances?
    No
Did Rez Life inspire you to do anything?
Become an Ndn audio book narrator.
    Any additional comments?
More books by American Indian authors narrated by American Indians. NOT pandering pap poet Sherman Alexie.
Reader does need to check Ojibwe pronunciation
This book was great, very informative and entertaining. The other reviewer is correct in pointing out that the reader doesn't sound Ojibwe, which in some portions of the book is fine - and then you get to the repeated mispronounciation of "Anishinaabe" as drawn-out "Anishi-knob," or any other moment where he has to read Ojibwe language, and it sounds like he's been hit on the head all of a sudden. For readers who are familiar with the sounds of Ojibwe it's jarring and insensitive; for those who have never heard it before It's teaching them incorrectly.

    Title: Across Atlantic Ice
Subtitle: The Origin of America's Clovis Culture
Author: Bruce A. Bruce A. Bradley, Denis J. Stanford
    Narrator: Christopher Prince
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-15-12
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 67 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
A major, groundbreaking work on early European migration to North America.
Who were the first humans to inhabit North America? According to the now familiar story, mammal hunters entered the continent some 12,000 years ago via a land bridge that spanned the Bering Sea. The presence of these early New World people was established by distinctive stone tools belonging to the Clovis culture. But are the Clovis tools Asian in origin? Drawing from original archaeological analysis, paleoclimatic research, and genetic studies, noted archaeologists Dennis J. Stanford and Bruce A. Bradley challenge the old narrative and, in the process, counter traditional - and often subjective - approaches to archaeological testing for historical relatedness.
The authors apply rigorous scholarship to a hypothesis that places the technological antecedents of Clovis in Europe and posits that the first Americans crossed the Atlantic by boat and arrived earlier than previously thought. Supplying archaeological and oceanographic evidence to support this assertion, the book dismantles the old paradigm while persuasively linking Clovis technology with the culture of the Solutrean people who occupied France and Spain more than 20,000 years ago.
    Critic Reviews:
"Across Atlantic Ice is brilliant and groundbreaking. As fascinating as it is controversial, this book brings together decades of research from diverse areas into a single volume that is well argued, factually rich, elegantly written, and absolutely riveting. I could not put it down." (Douglas Preston, author of Cities of Gold, Thunderhead, and former archaeology correspondent for the New Yorker)
"North America's first peoples were long thought to be Asians who migrated over the Bering land bridge some 12,000 years ago, bringing with them the tools of the Clovis culture. Now archaeologists Dennis Stanford and Bruce Bradley have radically recast the story. Drawing on climatic, genetic and archaeological evidence, they argue that the roots of Clovis culture rest in the Solutrean people of Spain and France, who sent some of their number across the Atlantic in boats 18,000 years ago." (Nature)
"This carefully crafted, well-researched book aims to change our thinking of who the first Americans were and where they came from...will affect the way the larger narrative of the first chapter of human history in the New World is written." (Tom D. Dillehay, author of The Settlement of the Americas)

    Science in progress...
Science is a messy process. That being said, this is not just the story of the populating of the Americas, this is the story of science itself. This is a story of new ideas challenging the old, new evidence, and the search for a better understanding of the facts. Many of the chapters can get bogged down with excessive detail about flintknapping but it definitely adds to the understanding and evidence for much bigger points. The way the Americas were populated is obviously complex with many subtleties.

    Title: Bunch of Amateurs
Subtitle: A Search for the American Character
    Author: Jack Hitt
    Narrator: Peter Colburn
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-15-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 29 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
What is it that drives the success of America and the identity of its people? Acclaimed writer and contributing editor to This America Life Jack Hitt thinks its because were all a bunch of amateurs.
Americas self-invented tinkerers are back at it in their metaphorical garages - fiddling with everything from solar-powered cars to space elevators. In Bunch of Amateurs, Jack Hitt visits a number of different garages and has written a fascinating book that looks at Americas current batch of amateurs and their pursuits. From a tattooed young woman in the Bay Area trying to splice a fishs glow-in-the-dark gene into common yogurt (all done in her kitchen using salad spinners) to a space fanatic on the brink of developing the next generation of telescopes from his mobile home, Hitt not only tells the stories of people in the grip of a passion but argues that Americas history is bound up in a cycle of amateur surges.
Beginning with Ben Franklins kite and leading all the way to the current TV hit American Idol, Hitt argues that the nations love of self-invented obsessives has always driven the country to rediscover the true heart of the American dream. Amateur pursuits are typically lamented as a world that just passed until a Sergey Brin or Mark Zuckerberg steps out of his garage (or dorm room) with the rare but crucial success story. In Bunch of Amateurs, Hitt argues that America is now poised to pioneer at another frontier that will lead, one more time, to the newest version of the American dream.
    Critic Reviews:
A love letter to American cultureas fascinating as it is inspiring, this hilarious book is a tour de force that celebrates troublemakers, risk takers, and the American spirit. (Publishers Weekly)
I ask myself if there's a better non-fiction writer in America than Jack Hitt... and come up with nobody. I've been following and stealing from his work my whole career. His usual mode is to convince you that you're reading a rollicking yarn, while with his left hand building a serious and unexpectedly persuasive argument. In Bunch of Amateurs he brings that to perfection. The book is about cranks, but it is also about the strange crucible of social tensions and intellectual assumptions inside of which our knowledge gets made. (John Jeremiah Sullivan)
"How embarrassing it is to be asked to craft a blurb for Jack Hitt. I'm not fit to carry his bags. Few writers are. Bunch of Amateurs is completely sublime; beautifully written, hilarious, brushfire protean in the erudite shifts he makes - high culture, low, science, history, music, you name it - and just wonderfully rollicking. Who else can have one simultaneously laughing out loud and waiting with bated breath for Benjamin Franklin to alight from a carriage in Paris in 1778? No one but Jack Hitt, that's who. Like I said, it shames me to endorse him, so unfit to the task am I, but endorse him I must. I have no choice. You must read this book." (David Rakoff)

    Wanders a Bit
The stories of amateurs are great, but there aren't quite enough of them. Jack Hitt is exuberant and a little too much in love with his own voice, so he digresses a lot. A couple of his amateurs are professionals who got there by unusual routes. But that's part of the story as well.
Amazing book. Profound premise, excellent delivery
this book was fun and interesting.

    Thoughtful book, worth a read
I first encountered this book while staying with family in the Southwest. But I was raised in Michigan and delighted to read a scholarly account of its native culture. You'll feel good about the read and supporting the author's efforts.
Excellent research into the recent past of the Ojibwe women

    Language: English

    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 59 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
When we think of Detroit, we think first of the auto industry and its slow, painful decline, then maybe the sounds of Motown, or the long line of professional sports successes. But economies are made up of people, and the effect of the economic downfall of Detroit is one of the most compelling stories in America.
Detroit: A Biography by journalist and author Scott Martelle is about a city that rose because of the most American of traits - innovation, entrepreneurship, and an inspiring perseverance. Its about the object lessons learned from the citys collapse, and, most prosaically, its about what happens when a nation turns its back on its own citizens.
The story of Detroit encompasses compelling human dimensions, from the hope it once posed for blacks fleeing slavery in the early 1800s and then rural Southern poverty in the 1920s, to the American Dream it represented for waves of European immigrants eager to work in factories bearing the names Ford, Chrysler, and Chevrolet. Martelle clearly encapsulates an entire city, past and present, through the lives of generations of individual citizens. The tragic story truly is a biography, for the city is nothing without its people.
Scott Martelle is a former Los Angeles Times staff writer and author of three books of nonfiction. He has covered three presidential campaigns as well as postwar reporting from Kosovo. He is the cofounder of the Journalism Shop, a book critic, and an active blogger. He lives with his wife and children in California.
    Critic Reviews:
FormerDetroit Newsreporter Martelle vividly recounts the rise and downfall of a once-great cityAn informative albeit depressing glimpse of the workings of a once-great city that is now a shell of its former self. (Publishers Weekly)
Blood Passionis the definitive account of a major landmark in the American struggle for social justice. And the way Scott Martelle tells the story is splendid proof that history can both be written as vividly as a novel and also be documented with scrupulous care. (Adam Hochschild,New York Timesbest-selling author onBlood Passion)
Martelles excellent book captures [the Ludlow Massacre] with a journalists flair for narrative and a historians penchant for making the necessary inferences where they belong: on the page for all to see. (San Francisco Chronicle)

    ...And I'm from Lansing!
Good book! Having grown up in Michigan, it was interesting to hear the history behind the city of Detroit. With the turmoil surrounding Detroit, it's debt, the crime, the flocks who've left and the hope from those that choose to stay, it was sad to hear how great the Motor City once was.
Having grown up in Lansing, Michigan history is always something I want to read. Throughout the entire book I found myself trying to picture what it must have been like in the 20's and 30's. Those days are long gone and it may be a long time if ever before Detroit will be as respected as it once was. Sad to see.
I listened to this book twice, each time finding myself captivated. I'll probably try and buy the hard copy for my shelf.

Title: 'They Have Killed Papa Dead!'
Subtitle: The Road to Ford's Theatre, Abraham Lincoln's Murder, and the Rage for Vengeance
    Author: Anthony S. Pitch
    Narrator: Milton Bagby
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 2 mins

    Publisher: steerforth press l.l.c.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 51 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
The assassination of Abraham Lincoln is a central drama of the American experience. Its impact is felt to this day, and the basic story is known to all. Anthony Pitch's thrilling account of the Lincoln conspiracy and its aftermath transcends the mere facts of that awful night during which dashing actor John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in the head and would-be assassin Lewis Payne butchered Secretary of State William Seward in the bed of his own home. "They Have Killed Papa Dead!" transports the listener to one of the most breathtaking moments in history, and reveals much that is new about the stories, passions, and times of those who shaped this great tragedy. Virtually every word of Anthony Pitch's account is based on primary source material: new quotes from previously unpublished diaries, letters and journals - authentic, contemporary voices writing with freshness and clarity as eyewitnesses or intimate participants, providing new images, a new vision, and new understanding of one of America's defining moments.
With an unwavering fidelity to historical accuracy, Pitch provides new confirmation of threats against the president-elect's life as he traveled to Washington by train for his first inauguration, and a vivid personal account of John Wilkes Booth being physically restrained from approaching Lincoln at his second inauguration. Perhaps most chillingly, new details come to light about conditions in the special prison where the civilian conspirators accused of participating in the Lincoln assassination endured tortuous conditions in extreme isolation and deprivation, hooded and shackled, before and even during their military trial.
Pitch masterfully synthesizes the findings of his prodigious research into a tight, gripping narrative that adds important new insights to our national story.
    Critic Reviews:
"No reader will come away unmoved, even at this distance, by anguish about the event. The author elicits our feelings for even the plotters in captivity and on the scaffold. A real page-turner about real history." (Publishers Weekly)
"Pitch has come up with the best title of the year, taken from Tad Lincoln's piteous cries upon learning of his father's assassination by John Wilkes Booth. This is an intense, vivid and moving portrayal of a family (and a country) brutally deprived of its leader." (Chicago Tribune)
"The next best thing to being there is reading Anthony Pitch's They Have Killed Papa Dead!': The Road to Fords Theatre, Abraham Lincolns Murder, and the Rage for Vengeance. He writes about the desperate efforts to protect the president, who was always in danger, plus the devastating grief and cruel injustice that came after Lincolns death." (Christian Science Monitor)

An book that will inspire you to others.
The author presents his current list of twenty-five books that shaped America. While anyone's list would differ, the discussion of the books he did choose, along with his reasons for their inclusion, introduced me to authors and works that were not included in my past reading lists. I have, due in large part to his recommendations, begun to add them to my literary repertoire. Mr. Foster provides a great service in this work.
Highly recommended for any age level - junior-high or above - although the detail of his survey of these works might be used as a "Cliff's Notes"-lite by students who may need to report on these works in school. Remember kids - plagiarism is bad.
