    Publisher's Summary:
Recounted with the insight and humor of an expert storyteller and drawing on personal correspondence, private journals, and other primary sources - many of them previously unpublished - Roberts brings to life the extraordinary accomplishments of women who laid the groundwork for a better society. Almost every quotation here is written by a woman, to a woman, or about a woman.
From first ladies to freethinkers, educators to explorers, this exceptional group includes Abigail Adams, Margaret Bayard Smith, Martha Jefferson, Dolley Madison, Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Catherine Adams, Eliza Hamilton, Theodosia Burr, Rebecca Gratz, Louisa Livingston, Rosalie Calvert, Sacajawea, and others.
In a much-needed addition to the shelves of Founding Father literature, Roberts sheds new light on the generation of heroines, reformers, and visionaries who helped shape our nation, giving these ladies of liberty the recognition they so greatly deserve.
    Editorial Reviews:
NPR reporter Cokie Roberts pays homage to the heroic women whose patriotism and sacrifice helped create our nation. Roberts spotlights early influential women - heroines, reformers, and visionaries all. Narrating with vivid insight, bemused wonder, humor, and a soft Southern accent, Roberts sheds a fresh perspective upon the lives of these strong, brave women, who were captivated by America's birth and political intrigue, even amidst personal hardships. Absence of pauses before and after quotations (mostly from letters), causes some confusion as to what is a quote and what is text. Roberts is an insightful and passionate narrator who delights in her subjects' daily lives, triumphs, outrages, and humor.

    Language: English
    Release date: 05-14-07
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 27 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
Though spanning less than two decades, these administrations covered a vitally important turning point in world history - the period in which the United States, having emerged from the cold war with unprecedented power and prestige, managed to squander both in a remarkably short time. This is a tale of decline: from the competent but conventional thinking of the first Bush administration, to the well-intentioned self-indulgence of the Clinton administration, to the mortgaging of America's future by the "suicidal statecraft" of the second Bush administration.
Brzezinski concludes with a chapter on how America can regain its lost prestige. This scholarly yet highly opinionated book is sure to be both controversial and influential.
    Critic Reviews:
"No one understands the interdependence of power and principle better than Zbigniew Brzezinski." (Jimmy Carter)
"Brilliantly provocative....Brzezinski covers a great deal of ground with dispatch and verve....His book is never less than exciting." (The New York Times Book Review)

Second Chance optimistically enjoins the axiomatic (and) the
controvertible principles by which American ethos thrives.
Clearly this book advances the (a) proposition that all
citizens equally protected provide for expendable (I.e. scato-

    Publisher's Summary:
For Oprah, the path back to the past was emotion-filled and profoundly illuminating, connecting the narrative of her family to the larger American narrative and "anchoring" her in a way not previously possible. For the listener, Finding Oprah's Roots offers the possibility of an equally rewarding experience.
    Critic Reviews:
"This book is every bit as engaging as the [PBS] documentaries and offers helpful resources" (Booklist)

    We all have roots.
Upon reflection, it is easy to understand why this book was written about Oprah -- everyone knows her. If someone wrote a book on, say, my roots, I'm sure it wouldn't go very far. But what used to make Oprah interesting now makes her ordinary. She's just another rich person who has traded the God she so loved for the "spiritual," read: money. It's sad really, because what an opportunity she was given.
Dr. Gates, the author, is wonderful, and I can't get enough of him. A smart, compassionate, fair man and I wish him much success with this, and other, titles.
Entertaining and informative - a rare combination
Where does Finding Oprah's Roots rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It is difficult to compare - certainly not fiction - not complete history; in a class by itself.
What other book might you compare Finding Oprah's Roots to and why?
I have not seen a comparable book regarding genealogy
Which character as performed by Dominic Hoffman was your favorite?

Title: Buried in the Bitter Waters
Subtitle: The Hidden History of Racial Cleansing in America
    Author: Elliot Jaspin
    Narrator: Don Leslie
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-05-07
Publisher: HighBridge, a division of Recorded Books
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 103 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
From the heart of the Midwest to the Deep South, from the mountains of North Carolina to the Texas frontier, words like these have echoed through more than a century of American history. The call heralded not a tornado or a hurricane, but a very unnatural disaster: a manmade wave of racial cleansing that purged black populations from counties across the nation.
We have long known about horrific episodes of lynching in the South, but the story of widespread racial cleansing above and below the Mason-Dixon Line has remained almost entirely unknown. Time after time, in the period between Reconstruction and the 1920s, whites banded together to drive out the blacks in their midst. They burned and killed indiscriminately and drove thousands from their homes, sweeping entire counties clear of blacks to make them racially "pure". The expulsions were swift; in many cases, it took no more than 24 hours to eliminate an entire African-American population. Shockingly, these areas remain virtually all-white to this day.
Based on nearly a decade of painstaking research in archives and census records, Buried in the Bitter Waters provides irrefutable evidence that racial cleansing occurred again and again on American soil, and fundamentally reshaped the geography of race.
    Critic Reviews:
"In the tradition of muckraking journalism and detective history, Elliot Jaspin employs the modern term 'cleansing' to uncover a hideous and veiled part of America's racial past....This book forces a moral confrontation with the truth that the past matters, however innocently we prefer to live in the present. With engaging prose and dogged research, Jaspin reveals America's home-grown pogroms." (David W. Blight, Professor of American History, Yale University)

  • When The Dancing Stopped Audiobook by Brian Hicks

    Title: When The Dancing Stopped
Subtitle: The Real Story of the Morro Castle Disaster and Its Deadly Wake
    Author: Brian Hicks
    Narrator: Dick Hill
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 38 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-26-06
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 164 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
The captain of the luxurious Ward Line flagship died under mysterious circumstances seven hours before his ship caught. Much of the crew abandoned ship, leaving passengers to burn or jump into the sea as a hurricane approached and literally fanned the flames. The ship was incinerated, and 134 people perished.
Using hundreds of previously classified FBI reports, first-person survivor interviews, and countless documents, Brian Hicks has written and solved a murder mystery that mesmerized the nation more than 70 years ago. Told with authentic period detail and true-crime excitement, Hicks determines that the ominous weather was not the cause for the ship's burning. From Hick's deeply researched epic, we can only conclude that the disaster was the work of a madman among the crew.
Hicks creates a finely drawn portrait of Depression-era America. Perfect for history buffs and adventure enthusiasts, When the Dancing Stopped is nonfiction narrative at its best.
    Critic Reviews:
"A suspenseful, highly satisfying listen." (Kirkus)
"The book is a riveting account of this tragedy and the man who apparently caused it." (Booklist)
"Hicks has done a lot of research, but it never weighs down the narrative, which draws the listener in from the get-go." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Real life murder mystery!
Would you listen to When The Dancing Stopped again? Why?
If I run out of books, which I doubt, I would listen again. There is a lot of information in this book and I'm sure I missed some important things.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the stories of the people whose lives were changed because of this tragedy. The young purser, the high school girl on her first trip and the men in the radio room.
The fire and death of the Captain were extremely interesting and the author goes to great lengths to explain them without much speculation. That is why I like true crime books.
What about Dick Hills performance did you like?
He is a good narrator for true stories that make them sound like potboilers and film noir. I enjoyed his work.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was very angry that the person most likely responsible for the crime was never prosecuted for it but happy that he is dead and gone now. However, had he been caught, several people he hurt later would have been much better off.
    Fascinating story!
What made the experience of listening to When The Dancing Stopped the most enjoyable?
The story of the Morro Castle disaster (of which I heretofore knew nothing) was an amazing true American tale. Why was this not a part of American History class? We all know about the Titanic, but how many of us know about the Morro Castle tragedy? This is an excellent story, told very well by the author.
What three words best describe Dick Hills performance?
The narrator did a very good job with diction and annunciation, but I found that, listening to the book over a car audio system, his vocal intonations of the characters' quotes and spoken passages were not on the same listening level as the reading of the passages.

    Title: The Money Men
Subtitle: Capitalism, Democracy, and the Hundred Years' War over the American Dollar
    Author: H. W. Brands
    Narrator: Lloyd James
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-19-06
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 129 votes
    Genres: History, American
    Publisher's Summary:
From the first days of the United States, a battle raged over money. On one side were the democrats, who wanted cheap money and feared the concentration of financial interests in the hands of a few. On the other were the capitalists who sought the soundness of a national bank and the profits that came with it.
In telling this exciting story, H. W. Brands focuses on five "Money Men": Alexander Hamilton, who championed a national bank; Nicholas Biddle, whose run-in with Andrew Jackson led to the bank's demise; Jay Cooke, who financed the Union in the Civil War; Jay Gould, who tried to corner the gold market; and J. P. Morgan, whose position was so commanding that he bailed out the U.S. Treasury.
The Money Men is a riveting narrative, a revealing history of the men who fought over the lifeblood of American commerce and power.
    Members Reviews:
Not clear what this book is really about
This book describes a handful of men in the 18th and 19th century who had some influence on American monetary policy. It is neither adequate from a biographical standpoint or from the standpoint of economic history. The scope is vast; a short book like this can't hope to cover two centuries of fiscal policy, but I'm not sure what Alexander Hamilton, Jay Cook, Jay Gould and JP Morgan have in common other than that they all did business in America. I'm not at all certain these were the 5 most significant people in determining 19th century fiscal policy.
Books like this are difficult listens because there is no coherent thread to follow. It reads like several shorter pieces the author strung together.

    Critic Reviews:
"[This] should be required reading for anyone interested in policy questions involving race and ethnicity." (New Republic)

I read it a few years back and answered a few questions...it is one of my favorites of books I have read ,this book is what they should teach children early on instead of growing through it ...then one would have to ask what is the real American attitude.
    WORTHWHILE READ
Informative, interesting details of various ethnic groups that have come to America.
If you are looking to better understand what has shaped our social values on ethnicity
Very in depth and thought provoking dissection of the ethnic history of America. If you are looking to better understand what has shaped our social values on ethnicity, I highly recommend it.
One of my favorite books. So much detail about different ethnic groups
One of my favorite books. So much detail about different ethnic groups, why they came to the U.S. and how different cultures came with different sets of values.
    The big picture.
Once again Thomas Sowell shows us the big picture as each group and each individual try to find a way forward in America.

Charles Alexander Eastman (1858-1939), an educated and well-known Sioux, saw both sides of the great divide between Indians and whites, and he wrote 11 books attempting to reconcile the two cultures. This book is his illumination of Indian spiritual beliefs and practices. A convert to Christianity, Eastman never lost his sense of the wholeness and beauty of the Indian's relation to his existence and to the natural world. Part history and part reminiscence, told in very personal terms, and coupled with seven folk tales, this book treats the listener to a good look at the ethics and morality of a culture that so few people know about.

This should be on any 'must read' list
The first half is very enlightening for adults, it reveals much of ancient indian spirituality. The second half is lots of fun for adults and children, being a set of enjoyable native american fables.
    Absolutely excellent.
    well read and
good information for those who want to know more about native indians their folklore. i think this is for all ages.
    An insider's account
This is a short, matter-of-fact account of "the Indian way of life", as told by a real Native American who eventually assimilated into white culture.
He explains that it is against the Indian's nature to reveal his spiritual ideas to outsiders, and this is what makes this book so valuable.
Particularly interesting is a chapter in which Eastman details the supposed "magic" which some Indians allegedly possess.
    Soulful
Enjoyed hearing the words of Alexander Eastman and capture that what was happening then in society is still happening today
