Perfect for fans of Bridge to Terabithia and Walk Two Moons, this debut middle grade novel is the story of two girls and the unforgettable summer in which they learn about true friendship and loss.
Annie has been promised a summer of freedom in the country. Freedom from a difficult school year, freedom from her fake "friends" back in the city, and, most of all, freedom from her mom's life-governing spreadsheets and rigid schedules.
When Annie meets California, who is visiting her grandfather's farm, it seems she has found the perfect partner for the summer she's always craved. Especially when California offers Annie a real-life adventure: If she and Annie can find the ponies her mom rode as a girl, surely it will remind her mom how wonderful the farm is - and fix what's broken between her mom and her grandfather.
But Annie's summer of freedom is sprinkled with secrets, and everything she has learned about bravery and love will be put to the test when the truth behind the ultimate secret changes her life forever.

It's. SO. Good!
I've seen several reviews out there that compare this book to Bridge to Terebithia. "Oh it reminds me Bridge to Terabithia," they write. "A quest as good as Bridge to Terabithia," they type. Well, I've never read Bridge to Terabithia, but I can tell you that when I do get around to reading it I will likely be thinking, "Ok, this is Bridge to Terabithia...but it's definitely no Swing Sideways." I'm a 33-year-old mom with guilty pleasures that include watching disney live-action movies targeting teens, and collecting lego minifigures, so you might be tempted to brush off what I'm about to say as a simple bias of mine that enjoys younger-than-me marketing. Oh but you would be mistaken! Swing Sideways breaks the age barrier with a story about parental conflict (let's face it, at any age you still face some type of conflict with your parents, so don't pretend like you won't relate to THAT), growing up, and friendship that is absolute. It's sadly beautiful, yet in the end leaves you happily content. You hear people say all the time, "I couldn't put it down, it was so good" or, "it made me laugh AND cry." You've heard it all before, so I won't say it again, but what I will leave you with is this: Imagine a woman in her thirties slipping into bed after putting the 3-year-old boy back to bed for the fourth and last time that night, kissing her husband goodnight, fluffing her own pillow in such a way as to make it easier to sit up and read...she starts by reading the back cover...
...it's now midnight. She's had to muffle both giggles and nose blowing in attempts to avoid waking sleeping husband, who has already more than once rolled over groggy and squinty eyed asking if everything was ok. After sliding even further into her self-made bed groove and trying so so SO hard to keep reading, she falls asleep with her hand inside the book, keeping her place for tomorrow. Yes, it's just that good.
